Pink Floyd boasts a discography that evokes dynamic emotions and moods, all conveyed within the expansive, experimental mold of progressive rock that feels timeless. Countless franchises, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have used tracks from the band's impressive work in their films. For instance, "Interstellar Overdrive" was featured in "Doctor Strange" to convey the nature of Stephen Strange's life before it turned upside-down, while "Time" was used in "Eternals" to set the tone of its worldbuilding. Since both seasons of "Loki" also feature retro-tinted soundscapes that harken to branched timelines and similar cosmic events, it is not a stretch to assume that the show's music was inspired by Pink Floyd.
There is good reason for this assumption, as the show's "Tva Theme," which plays at the end of every episode, sounds remarkably similar to Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar." There is a haunting effect in how the guitar and bass ramp up the mystery,...

St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn was full of good vibes and a spirit of musical collaboration on Nov. 10, as two pairs of unique talents — Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack, and Jon Batiste and Gucci Mane — took the stage for Rolling Stone’s first-ever Musicians on Musicians live event. There was laughter, honesty, and even a couple surprise performances, including a haunting solo-piano version of a Gucci Mane hit.

Pink Floyd have released a remaster of their magnum opus The Dark Side of the Moon, out now via Pink Floyd/Warner Music.
The polished-up edition of the album was originally released back in March with The Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary Box Set, but this is the first time that the standalone Dark Side remaster is available on its own. Pressed on vinyl, CD, and Blu-ray formats, the physical package comes equipped with postcards, stickers, and a 24-page booklet commemorating the record, which Consequence recently crowned one of the greatest albums of all time.
Notably, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side remaster arrives just a week after embattled ex-member Roger Waters shared The Dark Side of the Moon Redux, a track-by-track re-recording of the album on his own terms. He teased it with some — ahem — interesting versions of “Time” and “Money.”

Controversial artist Roger Waters is back with a controversial new release: a re-recording of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, made without the involvement of any of the other members of Pink Floyd. Listen to The Dark Side of the Moon Redux below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Beyond giving Waters the opportunity to one-up his estranged bandmates, re-recording one of the most famous albums of all time appeared to give the artist a chance to update its message for modern times, with a matured perspective. “The original Dark Side of the Moon feels in some ways like the lament of an elder being on the human condition,” Waters said in a statement. “But Dave [Gilmour], Rick [Wright], Nick [Mason], and I were so young when we made it, and when you look at the world around us, clearly the message hasn’t stuck. Roger Waters has unveiled reworked renditions of “Speak To Me / Breathe” from his upcoming album of re-recordings, The Dark Side of the Moon Redux, which interpolates Pink Floyd lyrics from “Free Four” off 1972’s Obscured by Clouds.
While the two-part opening track from 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon served as a type of overture introducing sounds and motifs used throughout the album, the redux version appears to similarly set the tone for the new collection. In a spoken word introduction, Waters recites the opening verse of “Free Four,” saying: “The memories of a man in his old age/ Are the deeds of a man in his prime,” which nearly echo his statement announcing the album as “the lament of an elder being on the human condition.”
Later lines such as “Eighty years with luck or even less” also pair nicely with his initial comments on the project where...

Fall festival season is around the corner, so now is a great time to catch up on a Cannes title that was one of summer’s defining indie hits. It involves a beloved (but polarizing) director who regularly attracts Oscar attention.
The contender to watch this week: “Asteroid City”
Wes Anderson‘s latest has been available on VOD since mid-July, but now it’s also streaming on Peacock, which shares a parent company with distributor Focus Features. Anderson is a three-time Best Original Screenplay nominee, and this existential alien-invasion dramedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Scarlett Johansson could net the writer-director his fourth nod in that category. (He’d share the recognition with co-writer Roman Coppola.) “Asteroid City” is one of two Anderson films bowing in 2023, the other being a forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.”
Other contenders:

In the ever-evolving landscape of music, where digital platforms dominate and streaming services reign supreme, one might wonder: Do album covers still hold any significance? After all, with the rise of digital music consumption, physical albums seem to be on the decline. However, beneath the surface lies a hidden world of artistic wonders, where album covers continue to play a pivotal role in capturing the essence of an artist’s vision. In this blog post, we will explore the advantages of album covers created with an album cover art maker like Vista Create and how they contribute to the overall music experience.
The Visual Gateway to Musical Exploration

Pink Floyd had one of the great resurrection stories in classic rock. Founder, guitarist, and chief songwriter Syd Barrett’s creative genius put the band on the map. His deteriorating mental health led his bandmates to move on without him. Barrett crashed Pink Floyd’s recording sessions for Wish You Were Here, but that happened years after he unexpectedly showed up at the studio while his former band made another record.

They made a legitimate claim to the classic rock throne in the 1970s, but Pink Floyd’s discography spanned decades. Many listeners misunderstood their biggest hit, and while the songs might be open to interpretation, the order of Pink Floyd’s albums is set and stone.
The five Pink Floyd members created 15 studio albums
Aside from a few early concerts, Pink Floyd only operated as a quartet. Still, the shadow of Syd Barrett loomed over the band for years, even after they moved on without him.
Barrett put Pink Floyd on the map as the singer, primary songwriter, and lead guitarist. He and bandmates Roger Waters (bass), Richard Wright (keyboards), and Nick Mason (drums) established themselves as the flagship band for psychedelic underground London in 1967. By the end of the year, Barrett was already on the path toward his post-Floyd life.

Roger Waters, would rather re-record old Pink Floyd music than reunite with the band’s surviving members for a new tour. As such, on October 6th he’ll release his solo re-recording of the band’s seminal 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon. Today, he’s previewing (Roger’s Version) with the album’s lead single, his version of “Money.”
Waters produced the LP, titled The Dark Side of the Moon Redux along with Gus Seyffert, and recorded the tracks with a studio band comprising Seyffert, Joey Waronker, Jonathan Wilson, Johnny Shepherd, and Jon Carin. Notably, the other members of Pink Floyd who helped to create the original, including David Gilmour and Nick Mason, do not appear on the recordings.

The Beatles are arguably the most influential music act ever. Not only were countless musicians inspired by their music, but their wild popularity changed how the industry distributed and marketed music. The Beatles had several impactful albums during their run, and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason believed this one “changed the face of the record industry.”

The Beatles released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album was their most experimental, embracing the surreal and psychedelic imagery that defined the 1960s. While the album was a risky move for the band, it paid off in dividends as it remains their best-selling album, selling over 32 million copies worldwide.

Pink Floyd and David Bowie were two of the biggest names in classic rock, but they had different approaches. Floyd evolved into studio wizards who became concept album virtuosos. The Thin White Duke reinvented himself several times but built his reputation as a glam rock star. Pink Floyd’s hit songs, as well as their underrated tunes, became staples, but Bowie wasn’t a fan and his negative opinion of the band meant he probably wasn’t paying attention to their success.
David Bowie wasn’t a Pink Floyd fan and had a harsh take on their 2nd iteration
Pink Floyd established themselves as psychedelic rock pioneers at the perfect time. Their inventive light show and creative live jamming emerged in time for swinging London’s wild summer of 1967. The band recorded their first album next door to The Beatles as they made Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Before they became a classic rock staple that churned out memorable tunes and underrated songs, Pink Floyd fought and clawed to attain popularity. Yet an early breakthrough led to a BBC TV appearance that keyboard player Rick Wright called the worst thing he ever did.
Pink Floyd’s Rick Wright said ‘it was horrible’ for the band to appear on ‘Top of the Pops’
Appearing on national television is a break most musicians would relish.
For Pink Floyd, it was both a blessing and a curse.
The blessing was getting on Top of the Pops a few weeks before their debut album hit shelves. The curse was realizing they didn’t have what it took to survive the music industry machine.

Pink Floyd had to wait before they became a classic rock success story. They wrote the song that predicted their breakthrough on The Dark Side of the Moon, and then their world changed. That album catapulted them to fame and the trappings of it. Bassist Roger Waters almost attacked a fan in 1967, which came a decade before his confrontation with a concert-goer inspired Pink Floyd’s last great album.

Some classic rock guitarists are known as much for their instruments as they are for their music. David Gilmour and his Fender Stratocasters fall into that category. The Pink Floyd guitarist amassed a huge collection of instruments he used on the band’s hits and underrated songs. Gilmour owned and played one of the world’s rarest and most coveted guitars, which eventually sold for $1.8 million.

Pink Floyd had one of the most remarkable reinventions of any classic rock band. The psychedelic pioneers lost their creative leader when they parted ways with Syd Barrett in 1968. After searching for a way forward without him, they eventually found their path and became one of the biggest bands of the 1970s with the impactful The Dark Side of the Moon. That album was a cornerstone of their career, but several underrated Pink Floyd songs from the band’s catalog deserve recognition. (All songs presented in chronological order).
1. ‘The Nile Song’ Album: More
Pink Floyd’s first effort without any contribution from Barrett was their soundtrack to the 1969 movie More. Without their mercurial leader and with the freedom to create for someone else’s project instead of their own album, the band showed off a range of styles. “The Nile Song” proved to be the most unprecedented song on the tracklist.

Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die” is an epic anthem and still one of the best James Bond songs ever. It’s a challenging song to perform, as a large orchestration is involved, but Guns N’ Roses accepted the challenge in 1991. The Guns N’ Roses version of “Live and Let Die” was different in several ways, and a few of their creative decisions made it “complex” to record.

Guns N’ Roses was one of the most prominent bands of the 1980s and 1990s. While songs like “November Rain” and “Welcome to the Jungle” propelled their career, the band still performed covers of classic songs, like Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil”.

Pink Floyd might have had one of the most dramatic transformations of any major classic rock band. Though drummer Nick Mason said the band’s groundbreaking early concerts were rubbish, Floyd became a psychedelic sensation. When the group moved on without founder and chief songwriter Syd Barrett, they emerged as a commercially successful prog rock powerhouse. But it didn’t happen overnight. One Pink Floyd song marked the breaking point between its psychedelic origins and legendary future.
The Pink Floyd song ‘Childhood’s End’ pointed toward ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and beyond
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page praised Barrett’s genius approach to music making. The innovation didn’t last. His erratic behavior led his bandmates to move on without him in 1968. Yet transforming into the prog-rock band that churned out commercially successful albums throughout the 1970s wasn’t seamless.
Pink Floyd held on to their psychedelic roots for several years after dismissing Barret.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason believes getting David Gilmour and Roger Waters on the same page for a reunion would require something like a miracle. While speaking about the band’s The Dark Side of the Moon classic “Time” on the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song, Mason said he thinks it would take someone like the late Nelson Mandela to broker a reconciliation between Gilmour and Waters.
“I think it’s highly unlikely, but I would’ve said that before Live 8 — 10 years ago or 12 years ago, whatever it was,” Mason said. “The one thing I could think would be possible would be if there was some… if by getting back together we could influence saving the planet, world peace, or whatever. Hopefully, we’d step up. But I don’t think otherwise. It would take a Nelson Mandela or someone like that to lead on it.”

If The Beatles and Rolling Stones started the fire that set England’s music scene ablaze in the 1960s, then Pink Floyd carried the torch. They evolved into a legendary classic rock band, just as Paul McCartney predicted they would, but not without the help of some benevolent benefactors. Pink Floyd had a little help from McCartney and John Lennon, who partially financed the event where Floyd played its first major concert.

Pink Floyd had one of the most interesting career arcs of any classic rock band. They started life as late 1960s psychedelic masters championed by Paul McCartney before morphing into a prog rock powerhouse in the 1970s. They became world beaters, but drummer Nick Mason said Pink Floyd’s first concerts were a load of rubbish between a few good ideas. Still, the band’s embryonic days gave them the cred to carry on through a key lineup change before they morphed into a classic rock staple.
Nick Mason said Pink Floyd played ‘a hell of a lot of rubbish’ at their earliest concerts
Pink Floyd started out similar to The Beatles. They played live in front of smallish crowds before finding domestic and then international fame. The biggest difference was that Pink Floyd rose to prominence in swinging London long after the Fab Four broke out of Liverpool to become world famous.

Utopia’s Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) grossed an estimated $10k from one engagement at NYC’s Film Forum, where it was the top-ranking pic. Celebrated filmmaker and photographer Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary is the story of Hipgnosis, the iconic album art design studio that was a force in the music industry behind some of the most recognizable covers of all time. It features new interviews with Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Noel Gallagher and others.
Turnout was backed by a multi-generational crowd of music, design and cinema enthusiasts, Utopia said, with multiple sold-out shows and in-person appearances by Corbijn along with Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey “Po” Powell. Head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said the doc drew drom the distributor’s traditional Gen Z fans, along with older demos “that grew up with that music and those albums.”

Going to school in the 1950s was a much different environment than it is now. Corporal punishment was still legal in schools in the U.K., so teachers had some harsh methods of discipline for their students. In an interview on This Cultural Life podcast, McCartney said school was tough back then because teachers were allowed to “whack” you.
“[I was] a bit of a skiver really, but [only] until you had to knuckle down,” he said. “Teachers were pretty brutal in those days, you know. They were allowed to whack you,...

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the most legendary rock albums from the 1970s. It’s achieved an almost mystifying status as its otherworldly music transfixed audiences. The album doesn’t include collaborations with other artists. There was nearly a voice cameo from former Beatle Paul McCartney, but Pink Floyd left it off the record.

Pink Floyd recorded The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios, the recording studio made famous by The Beatles. The previously announced Syd Barrett documentary Have You Got It Yet?, about the Pink Floyd founder-turned-recluse-turned-mythic cult icon, has shared its first trailer ahead of its U.S. release this summer.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has long served as an intermediary between singer-guitarist David Gilmour and singer-bassist Roger Waters, and despite years of drama, he’s still “tempted” to reunite the band properly and get Waters back in the mix.
Gilmour recently called Waters a “misogynistic, antisemitic Putin apologist,” while Waters has taken to re-recording Pink Floyd’s legendary album The Dark Side of the Moon without the rest of the band. Still, in a recent interview, Mason didn’t rule out a reunion. “You never know what will be thrown up,” he said. “I’m tempted to say I’m available for anything.”
Mason wasn’t bothered by Waters’ rewriting of The Dark Side of the Moon, admitting that the recording was “annoyingly brilliant.”
“[Waters] actually sent me a copy of what he was working on and I write to him and said, ‘Annoyingly, it’s absolutely brilliant!,’” Mason recalled.

Album artwork flipped from being an afterthought to a feature when classic rock bands started selling millions of records during their heyday. The large surface area of vinyl LP sleeves gave artists a huge pop culture canvas to work with, and they took advantage. Pink Floyd took full advantage of the album cover-as-artwork movement, and their best sleeves remain some of the most iconic ever created. The Beatles and Rolling Stones saw some of their album artwork banned, but Pink Floyd never ran into that problem.

Pink Floyd’s classic rock bonafides are just as impressive as their English counterparts. Paul McCartney’s prediction for the band proved to be right, and they created a string of culturally impactful albums throughout the 1970s. New York City proved how much Pink Floyd’s 1973 masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon resonates 50 years after its release.

Led Zeppelin threw fans a curveball when they released their fifth album, Houses of the Holy, on March 28, 1973. Or did they? The band never remained in one stylistic place for very long, and they tackled several genres on the well-received Houses of Holy.

The Beatles’ psychedelic pop masterpiece Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band remains an iconic album from the era. Pink Floyd’s debut record, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, is another. Paul McCartney was a guiding force behind Sgt. Pepper’s, including coming up with the title, but he took time to “pass the mantle” to Pink Floyd. McCartney’s prediction about Floyd’s potential (which came with some reassuring words) was 100% right.

Joe Satriani is best known as the guitar virtuoso who plumbs the outer regions of space for music which needs no words. His instrumental progression has only yielded a few songs with lyrics, but they tell stories. Satriani’s most recentrecord, The Elephants of Mars, is basically a travelog, which includes a dip in the waters beneath Jupiter’s moon Ganymede. But many Den of Geek readers might remember him as the talent behind a towering ‘90s instrumental record which featured a surprising visual connection to the Marvel Universe.
Satriani’s 1987 album Surfing with the Alien has nothing to do with surf music, a musical genre which produced quite a few brilliant guitarists, or even the Marvel character Silver Surfer. Released on October 15, 1987, Satriani’s second album featured the famed Marvel hero on the front cover and the hand of Galactus on the back, as illustrated by John Byrne.

With Pink Floyd unlikely to reunite ever again, Gov’t Mule will fill the void this summer by embarking on “The Dark Side of the Mule Tour.”
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon, Gov’t Mule will perform Pink Floyd covers on a newly announced amphitheater tour. Each show will also feature a separate set of Gov’t Mule originals, as well as special guest opener Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening.
According to frontman Warren Haynes, the upcoming tour will mark the final “Dark Side of the Mule” performances. “This all started so organically with what we thought would be a one-time Halloween performance [in 2018]. Since then, ‘Dark Side of the Mule’ has grown into something else. It’s a blast to perform this material but our intent is to do it for one final tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dark Side.

The Beatles and Pink Floyd were two of the world’s biggest bands in the 1960s and 1970s. And they hardly crossed paths while both bands were active, even though Floyd recorded their debut next door to The Beatles. Pink Floyd cut Paul McCartney’s contribution to their legendary 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon, but The Beatles’ music made a surprise and nearly-hidden cameo on the record.

Glastonbury’s Emily Eavis has revealed that the John Peel Stage has been renamed after almost 20 years.
The news arrives at the same time as the remaining headliners for the 2023 festival were announced, with Guns N’ Roses and Arctic Monkeys joining Elton John on the billing.
Eavis discussed the “pipeline” problems related to the all-male headliners, as well as an overarching 53 per cent male lineup so far.
In an interview with The Guardian, Eavis also disclosed that the John Peel Stage, which replaced the previous named New Bands Tent in 2005, will now be called Woodsies.
Eavis said the decision was part of a push to name stages after the fields they stand in, such as West Holts and Silver Hayes.
“We’ve had 20 years of John Peel and it’s been an honour to use his name,” she said.

Director Alfonso Cuarón has spoken out about his dislike of dubbing non-English language films rather than using subtitles.
The Roma director is the producer on Le Pupille, an Italian children’s film that has been nominated for Best Live Action Short at this year’s Academy Awards.
On Disney Plus, the film automatically plays with an English-language dub. In a new interview, Cuarón admitted that he isn’t a fan of the method of translation, having made sure Roma was never officially dubbed.
“If that’s going to help for films to be seen around the world, Ok, but I find very, very far from ideal,” he told IndieWire.
“Look, if you’re an adult, reading subtitles are not going to hurt you, unless you need to move your lips when you’re reading and will end up very tired at the end of the movie.”

The first reviews are in forDaisy Jones & the Six – and it seems like Prime Video’s long-awaited TV series might not have hit all the right notes.

While fans of Jenkins’ book have begged for an adaptation since it was released, early reviews for the series – which arrives on Prime Video on Friday (3 March) – have been less than glowing.

Hoda Kotb’s absence from the Today show has finally been explained by her co-host.
Kotb hasn’t made a live appearance on the series since 17 February. She was last seen on the series on 20 February in a pre-recorded segment.
Her absence has caused confusion, with many viewers asking where the anchor is in concerned social media messages.
Today star Craig Melvin addressed the queries while discussing another of his co-hosts, Savanna Guthrie, who was sent home on Tuesday (28 February) after falling ill on air.
“She is at home after a positive Covid test yesterday,” Melvin told viewers, adding; “We are wishing our friend a speedy recovery.”
Melvin then steered his statement towards Kotb, telling the audience: “As for Hoda – we know a lot of you have been wondering how she is doing. We can tell you that Hoda is Ok. She has got a family health matter that she has been dealing with.

Irish band Fontaines DC lead the releases, sharing their raucous version of “Cello Song” on Steve Lemacq’s 6 Music show today (Wednesday 1 March).

On 1 March 1973, a new moon rose over rock music. Immersive, quadrophonic, celestial and deeply introspective, Pink Floyd’s eighth album arrived in a heady flurry of cash tills, chiming clocks, pained-angel arias and cold, disembodied voices speaking of violence, death and insanity. Where their prog-rock peers were busy crafting grandiose yet chintzy pantomimes of Arthurian legend, sci-fi fantasy and messianic pinball, the Floyd delved into the dark universe of humanity’s inner space; into the stresses and horrors of everyday life that daily push us all to the brink. A record as relatable as it was cosmic, as melodic on the topics of “Time” and “Money” as it was climactic on the themes of war, division and madness, The Dark Side of the Moon set a new standard for high-concept intellectual rock. Forty-five million prism-clad units later, it remains the fourth best-selling record ever made.
