Who's house?
BandSAboutMovies1 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Washington Post said that this movie was vile, vicious, despicable, stupid, sexist, racist and horrendously made."

Maybe they hadn't watched the blaxploitation movies of a decade and a half before, because instead of the guys from Hollis, Queens making a Beatles style fun film, they decided to remake something like Slaughter crossed with an Italian Western and yet filled it with everyone on Def Jam and had the amazing weird brains to make Rick Rubin the racist super villain.

I'm here for all of this.

The film starts with Jam Master Jay and Run picking up D. M. C. From prison. He's done a nine-month bid and it feels like we spent at least a few of those days with the camera as it searches the prison halls for him. Then, Jam Master Jay relates a sexual dream that ends with him getting his penis eaten.

Like I said, this isn't the fun rap movie people probably wanted.

They go to visit their manager Russell Simmons, played by their manager Russell Simmons, who gets them and the Beastie Boys signed to a record label run by Vic Ferrante (Rubin, who directed and co-wrote this with Ric Menello, who directs Doro's "Bad Blood" video, as well as Danzig's "Mother," LL Cool J's "Goin' Back to Cali" and the Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!" and "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn." He was going to make the Beastie Boys into movie stars with the film Scared Stupid, which New Line was going to pay for, but the Beasties left Def Jam and went off to build a house and make Paul's Boutique so things worked out as they should have).

Yet before the guys can celebrate being big stars, one of their friends Runny Ray gets killed and this sends them off on a mission of vengeance. And have sex with gangster molls. And break fingers. And go see Slick Rick. And shoot people. Lots of people.

The album of the same title - Run DMC's fourth - contains some of their best known songs like "Run's House," "Mary, Mary" and "I'm Not Going Out Like That," which had the bravery to sample bands that were currently taking hip hop past what the group had started like Public Enemy and even themselves. The sessions also led to seasonal favorite "Christmas In Hollis," which samples Clarence Carter's "Back Door Santa" and used to infuriate me every time people tried to perform it at karaoke. So yeah, while the album is remembered today as a classic, it had a mixed reception back in 1988. As for the movie, well, no one talks about it today.

I am. And despite some people - Nathan Rabin, for one - claiming it ruins Run DMC for them, I kind of love it. Because these guys got to make the movie they wanted to make, even if it may not have been the right movie for their fans or their fame.

You know what? I live for Run DMC tearing apart some racist dudes at a bar. And by that, I mean that Jam Master Jay and Rev. Run are beating everyone up while Darryl McDaniels just drinks beer, eats peanuts and breaks the bartender's wrist. They then leave the bar with Jam Master Jay launching a full bottle of booze at a gigantic mirror.

"I always wanted to do this," he says.

I get it.

Who's House? Run's House!!!!
Chunk18213 June 1999
What can I say about this breakthrough movie? It's got all the making of a classic...intense special effects, great acting, Run DMC, nail-biting suspense, and the Beastie Boys. You can't help being drawn into the fast-paced story of revenge and greed. But I think its those tender, heart-warming moments that really make "Tougher than Leather" one of Run DMC's best films to date. Take for example the touching scene were Russell Simmons attempts to pick up 2 fly honeys....

RS - "Hey Baby you wanna do the wild thing?" FH1 - "No" RS - "Hey Baby you wanna do the wild thing?" FH2 - "Sure"

I tell you there was not a dry eye in the house. And that clever scene where Jam Master Jay attempts to get some information out of a bartender with the aid of his "rich friends" Benjamin Franklin and his twin brother. Simply brilliant.

But seriously folks: This movie was definitely worth the $2 Australian dollars (1.60 US) that we paid to rent it, but just barely.

Godfather part IV

A film of epic proportions. This film was far ahead of it's time, it wasn't till close to a decade later that we started to see films made by entertainers (rappers) featuring a sound track and an album to accompany it. Tougher Than Leather is similar to movies like Cash Money's Baller Blocking, Choices and Master P's Bout It Bout It. Now almost every rapper has tapped into this market Jay Z, Ruff Ryders, Eight Ball, Three 6 Mafia, Camron (in Empire), all of them. Every camp has their own Scarface tale to tell, and this happens to be RUN D.M.C.'s

Also if you pay close attention there are some amazing cameos, ranging from Slayer to Glen E. Freidman. Slick Rick looks like he's probably 19, Russel's a monster, Runny Ray, Rick... I mean what more could you need? This movie probably won't be recognized until years from now. This is no Beat Street or You Got Served, this is real Hip Hop. D.M.C. is in the pen, Run and J run a train on a white broad, and the head count is absurd. Bodies drop, crack is still relatively new on the scene, I mean this is real hood cinema. Peep it out.

Tougher Than Leather to Watch

I love Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, but this movie was trash. To list what was good is easier and shorter than listing what was bad. And to be clear--since we're talking about a movie starring hip-hop artists--I mean bad as in awful not bad in the complimentary sense. The only thing good about this "movie" was the music. Everything else was terrible: the plot, the acting, the editing, the sound, the video quality, everything. The plot started as something very nebulous and somehow morphed into a revenge plot. One of Run DMC's homies was killed by the antagonist, Vic. Run DMC and Jam Master J then went about trying to find the real killer and exact justice. It was laughably bad, but I won't hold it against these hip-hop pioneers.

Average Hip Hop Movie But Still Worthy
mekeating15 November 2006
Spike Lee turned down this script. That says it all. But I still wish it came out on DVD. I think it's still a Hip Hop classic from that era. Shame it only grossed like 3 million. Problaby cost a million to produce though. They should have promoted this a little bit more. I remember significant delays with this movie being released and problems on the set with Rick Rubin. It should have been a better movie with those caliber of stars. But by 1988 Run-DMC and the Beasties were starting to fade out a little. It was a should have or would have movie. Nowadays, 50 cent gets a 30 million dollar movie budget and top notch promotion.

A long way from even being good.
wmc089228 March 2023
I remember this movie coming to the theatre I worked at in 1988. We had to give multiple refunds to patrons that walked out in the middle of the movie. After seeing it, I understood why. If Runs musical talent paralleled their acting talent, the world would've never heard of them. The story line was weak, the acting was atrocious and just went nowhere. It was something even a 10 year old would be embarrassed to watch. If there was ever a movie on how not to make a movie, this would be it. If fact, it should be renamed How Not To Make A Movie. Maybe then it would get a higher rating. Sad because their musical talent is far above par.

Not an oscar nominee, but for its time...
mackdaddyspliffs17 February 2002
I was a rap fan back from the beginnings with kurtis blow, this was all part of the phenomenom that russell simmons, and rick rubin started with their def jam recordings studio...i remember being like 14 yrs old going to see this movie with my dad, and even at that easily entertained age, i was let down...but...looking back now..they did the best with what they had, the budget had to be a spaghetti string..im sure...so with what they were given....it was the first RAP movie...and ushered us in to the age of tupacs, biggie smalls,redmans,wutangs...opened doors for the movies like friday, house party...they were the FRONT RUNNERS!!! and deserve better ratings then the people rating the show here.... AMEN thank god for run dmc

Gulity Pleasure
DunnDeeDaGreat17 November 2001
This movie is a gulity pleasure. It takes us to a world where if you punch a guy he files in the air, girls ask you out and murder is cool. Run-DMC basically plays themselves on steriods in this hip hop semi classic. If you haven't seen it, see if you can find it.

There's a LOT to be thankful for
samjayne2 September 2018
As a B- Movie , a hip hop movie, or whatever, this movie is a blast. You get Run DMC and their friends on a mission. bad reviews are expecting some 'history of hip hop' go read the book. This is more insightful than the history books.

Not bad, not bad at all!!
matlock-61 May 2000
I bought this film based entirely on the fact that I'm a RUN DMC fan, and I wasn't disappointed. It's surprisingly well directed, considering Rick Rubin is a record producer and as far as I know had no experience, and the acting is much better than you might expect. Jam Master Jay is especially good in a Tarantino-esqe storytelling scene in the beginning when DMC is released from prison and Jay and RUN go to pick him up. Run is also very good. DMC was great in his action scenes, and even though his lines weren't done wonderfully, he's not at all bad either. In fact, everyone does surprisingly well, for being mostly Musicians and their producers and managers. Jenny Lumet is really sexy as well as being a pretty good actress, I'm surprised that I haven't seen her more. Great action sequences, excellent introduction, and totally cool party scenes with Slick Rick and the Beastie Boys rapping, and DMC drinking from a 40 of OE. A very underrated movie!

Really Bad but a must see for old school rap fans
reverendtom4 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* Sure, this movie is horrible, but its also extremely entertaining and fun. If you like old school rap, this is a must see. The Beastie Boys scenes alone are worth the price of admission. The BBoys get drunk onstage and perform "Scenario", a track that was unfortunately left off of the seminal "License to Ill". There is also a scene where the BBoys and Run DMC go to a fancy restaurant and act like jerks. Hilarious. Russell Simmons is awesome as himself. Rick Rubin may be one of the best producers ever, but his performance here is horrible. Hilarious, but horrible. Runny Ray is great as himself, and you genuinely feel bad for him when he gets shot. Great "live" footage of some RUN DMC classics and even a live performance of "Treat Her Like A Prostitute" by the great Slick Rick. All in all, if you like old school rap and/or cheesy 80s movies, see it! Now, where's the DVD, already?

Entertaining rap musical action comedy. A fun time capsule.
Melville-79 July 2000
This is a low budget action move set in the rap music industry, starring one of the most popular groups of the first wave of rap stars, Run-DMC. Though produced on a shoestring and rough around the edges, this fun little epic captures the style and period when rap music was king far better than slicker more hyped films like KRUSH GROOVE. The acting is a bit shaky at times, but Run, DMC, Jam Master Jay and the others project an impressive charisma. The entertaining story moves along at a fast clip, with our heros out to avenge the death of a beloved roadie at the hands of some slimy music industry sharks who have a sideline laundering drug money. Cameos by rap music heavyweights like The Beastie Boys, Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin and LL Cool J add to the amusement. Director/co-writer/co-star Rubin's father Mickey gives a nice performance as a mafia kingpin who is less than thrilled with his son's chosen profession. Co-writer Ric Menello went on to direct several classic music videos for The Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. All in all, not too shabby.
