- The humorous line spoken at the start of the film, "Come out! Come out! Or we'll pull your eyeballs out!" had the latter phrase removed in the Streamline Pictures English dub. It was deemed to be "Inpolitically correct" by the company.
- Current prints are missing the Toho Company, Ltd. title card that originally started the film. Instead, the Studio Ghibli logo appears with a "Tokuma Shoten Presents" screen afterward, with the date 1988. North American prints had this phrase in English, or in the Streamline dub - it read "TOKUMA RELEASING PRESENTS".
- In the alternate 2005 Disney version of 'My Neighbor Totoro' the Fox studios voice actors and actresses, including Cheryl Chase and Lisa Michelson, have been completely replaced with Disney voice actors and actress including Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning. Also the opening and closing songs are sung by Sonya Isaacs in the Disney version. Also gone are the strangers talking back to Mei and Satsuki (this is to make it truer to the Japanese version), The elderly woman who was called Nanny is now called Granny in the Disney version. Also the Disney version has a wide-screen whereas the Fox studio version had a full screen version.
- The Disney dub has a different set of opening credits. Instead of using the crew members' names as with the original Japanese version and the Streamline dub, it instead shows the voice cast and then some crew names. The Australian/UK DVD prints utilize the localized logo in place of the Japanese logo and feature the same credits as the Streamline dub abit in a different font. Blu-Ray releases from those two regions retain the Japanese opening credits.
