Anil Kapoor’s Fighting Spirit: On Four Decades of Film, the ‘Slumdog’ Effect, and One Heck of a Year
Anil Kapoor still gets meetings he can trace back to “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Chatting with IndieWire shortly after the premiere of Viacom18’s “Fighter,” the Indian actor is one of the rare global stars to enjoy “crossover success” — a buzzy term that, these days, seems to mean less crossing over and more crossing back-and-forth. Indian film stars, once compelled to journey West to Hollywood, now enjoy rich storytelling opportunities at home that also exist abroad. Between “Fighter,” “Animal,” a remake of “The Night Manager,” and daughter Rhea’s TIFF premiere, Kapoor’s last 12 months demonstrate the diversity of projects available for Indian actors today — though he still gets the most worldwide acknowledgement for “Slumdog.”
“I get really surprised sometimes at the kind of people who still know me, still remember me, and want to work with me. It’s still continuing,” Kapoor told IndieWire. “As a matter of fact, I insist...

As people from different walks of life mourn the comedian-actor-politician’s death, Ians looks back at the time when the then-unknown artiste took up small roles in films, including a couple of blockbusters, where his presence was almost missed. Tezaab (1988): It’s this Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit-starrer film in which Srivastava played the character of an extra. He, however, went unnoticed in the film, which boasted of a huge star cast. Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela means differently to different people. For some if it is Aamir Khan’s ‘Tapori’ act, others went bonkers over Urmila Matondkar and many who cherish Rangeela’s great music.
Rangeela as a name has an amazing success quotient in the world of Hindi cinema. For the first time when the word Rangeela was used, it was in Dev Anand’s film Prem Pujari as song Rangeela Re which marked the debut of Gopal Das Neeraj as a lyricist. It was the significant highlight of an otherwise mediocre film Prem Pujari. It was perhaps for the first time that Waheeda Rehman enacted a role of drunkard and did it with grace and panache. Before Yash Chopra could weave a tapestry of romance with a white saree, it was Dev Anand who set the tone for it in Prem Pujari.

Oscar is a Sicilian teenager with the tough-guy mohawk of a rebel and the shy, rare, dimpled smile of a child. Stanley is a handsome young Nigerian immigrant, his short hair worn in locs, who insists on saying grace before the home-style meals he prepares: banku, fish stew. Oscar grudgingly helps his father and brother grub a living for the family, scavenging for scrap metal; through his connection to the parish priest, Stanley gets casual jobs harvesting grapes and herding sheep. The two protagonists of Michele Pennetta’s beautiful, quietly scorching documentary have nothing in common except, maybe, everything: they share a kind of looming futurelessness, a melancholy awareness of the inescapability of their hard, poor circumstances and a reliance on the forbiddingly arid landscapes of economically ravaged Sicily to provide a living.
This is the third of Pennetta’s projects to deal with life on the fringes of solvency and legality in contemporary Sicily,...

Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit Nene, a judge on reality TV show "Dance Deewane" -- which will have talent from three different age groups competing for a title -- says age should not come in the way of one's talent.
The show, in its second season, has 'Yahan deewangi nahi kisi ki kam... Dekhenge kis generation mein hai Dum' as its core philosophy.
It's a family show by all means, said Madhuri.
"I believe that age cannot and should not restrict someone to dance. Earlier in other dance shows, usually children would participate and the parents would watch the performance as a part of the audience."
"With this show, we are breaking that norm and the whole family gets to participate... from three generations -- the kids, their parents as well as grandparents. This year, we have got so much active participation from the elder generation because they have...

Saturday’s show opened with hosts Ranvir and Manish reminding the audience that there are just 7 days left for the grand finale of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa! It was then time to determine this weeks face-off. Mouni was one of the face-off contestants but as she has the Shakti Immunity ball, she used it to be safe. This meant that the face-off would be between Shakti and Akshat! Two of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’s strongest contestants.
The judges were very excited that Jhalak had reached the semi final stage. Host Manish reminded the audience that as Shakti did not perform last week due to ill health, she had received zero scores and so her outcome would also depend on the number of votes she received from her fans.
Then there was a special performance from choreographer Ganesh Hedge who was the special guest for the episode and had also choreographed the contestants acts this week.

Actresses today are not far behind from the Actors, and Sonam Kapoor is no different. She is an independent girl and would not essay a character where she is to play second fiddle to the actor. Even though she has not been a fan of the kind of cinemas that were produced in the 80s and 90s, there is one movie that she would love to act in. The film is her father Anil Kapoor’s and Madhuri Dixit’s, “Tezaab.” Even though filmmakers are busy acquiring the rights of the hit films of that period, Sonam Kapoor is in no mood to do hero-centric films. She would love to play the hero herself. So, if a certain Mr. India were to be remade, Sona...
