Here it is the third week of August, and it's obvious we're solidly in the middle of the dog days of summer. Not that it's especially hot where I am, but from the slow influx of news over the period from August 16-22, 2008, anyone can see that it's a stagnant time in Hollywood and the rest of the horror community. But a few choice pieces of information did manage to rise out of the general malaise, including:
Tristan started things off with a new 7 Deadly Sinns, an homage to creepy cinematic twins. I was very happy to see The Other included as it definitely had an effect on me as a child watching it, and there are several other great films mentioned as well.
From terrible twos to terrific trios, how about a collaboration among Ray Harryhausen, Edgar Allan Poe, and stop-motion animation? It gets no better, I'd say! A

Despite what they say, I just don’t get why the Child’s Play franchise needs a reboot. A new film that picks up where Seed ended could be pretty damn cool if they kept it dark, but at least series creator Don Mancini’s doing it himself.
In a recent lengthy chat with AICN, Manicini and producer David Kirshner discuss the upcoming 20th Anniversary DVD (pre-order it here), as well as the impending remake. The first bit of good news? Brad Dourif will be back as the voice of Chucky. ”If you could recast it,” Mancini said, ”you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think.”
Going back to my comments about a sequel instead of a remake, Mancini also offered up a rationale for starting the franchise over that draws on that idea. ”I

This reminds me of the battle that went on to get the remake of Friday The 13th on the big screen. After AICN posted their incredible interview with Child's Play creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner, we got in touch with Mancini who gave us an update of the actual status of the remake, which will also see the return of Brad Dourif. What will it take for Charles Lee Ray to return as Chucky in theaters? Read on and find out. "We've had several meetings," Don Mancini tells Bloody-Disgusting, "I pitched my new take to the studio and got their notes. They definitely want to make the movie. But they're busy with the deal-making process at the moment, which is complicated by the fact that the remake rights are owned jointly by Universal and MGM (where we made the original film). "

Here are some interesting pieces I stumbled across on the Web today. Click on the links to find out more.
• At Entertainment Weekly: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are joining Guillermo del Toro to write the screenplay for "The Hobbit." Finally!
• At The Hollywood Reporter: Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox are fighting over the rights to Zack Snyder's "Watchmen."
• Ain't It Cool News' Quint talks to writer Don Mancini (and others) about a possible "Child's Play" remake.
• Cinematical picks seven romantic comedies you should watch. I don't agree with all the picks.
• At Yahoo! via AP, Roger Moore chats about his upcoming James Bond memoir. I can't wait to read it.

The Child's Play franchise has always been one that I felt took a huge nose dive after it peaked on Child's Play 2. After part three the series began to inject much more humor into the films and turned the psychopathic killer doll into a punch line instead of a lunatic mass murderer on the run. The psychology of the killer James Earl Ray was completely erased. Now it seems a reboot is on the way. Don Mancini the writer of the franchise will be helming the reboot as well writing script once again. AICN managed to track him down and talk about what the plan is with the new film and what, if any...

By the end of 2020, we'll probably see every horror movie remade, it's inevitable. As we first announced last October, Child's Play is one of the latest horror franchises being rebooted. The same producers who brought us all five of the previous Child's Play movies are doing this reboot, which should be a good sign, considering that doesn't usually happen. Additionally, Don Mancini, who wrote all of the Child's Play movies and directed Seed of Chucky, is both writing and directing this reboot, too. Quint from Ain't It Cool News caught up with Don and producer David Kirschner to talk about the Special Edition DVD and ended up spending some time chatting about the reboot - and it actually doesn't sound that bad. First and foremost, Mancini explains why they decided to restart this franchise with a reboot. "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the

A few months ago it was reported that Child's Play creator Don Mancini would step behind the camera and direct a remake to his own film that he brought to the world back in 1988 with director Tom Holland. This morning a brand new interview was posted to help promote the upcoming 20th Anniversary DVD release, where creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner talk in details about the forthcoming remake. "Its not like we would ever who would you get thats better?," director Don Mancini adds. "I mean with Chucky so much of it and David and I talk about this a lot, that because hes a puppet, theres an aspect of him that feels like hes an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. Its almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something..." More inside

Quint over at Ain't It Cool News did a lengthy interview with Don Mancini (co-writer on Child's Play), David Kirschner (producer on Child’S Play) and Michelle Gold (producer of the new DVD). Several interesting tid-bits came up over the course of the conversation, including the topic of the proposed Child's Play remake.
Don Mancini will be writing and directing the Child's Play remake, aka "reboot" as they're calling it and it will retell the "origin" story established in the first Child's Play movie.
They also reveal that they fully intend on using Brad Dourif as Chucky aka Charles Lee Ray again, as it would be difficult to imagine anyone else in the role.
Mancini tells Quint, "I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They

If it wasn't official before, it just got a lot more officialier (real word): We'll be getting a remake, I'm sorry, a "reboot" of Child's Play. The good news is that it comes from the original creators of the franchise, Don Mancini and David Kirschner, and that Brad Dourif will once again be reprising his role as Charles Le Ray. You may ask, why remake it then? I'm sure the producers would respond with a polite, yet definitive, "Go f*ck yourself." Aint it Cool News'...

At the beginning of August, several of the major horror web publications all received a mysterious video spot hinting at something called 5 Or Die. It turns out that 5 Or Die is actually the new short film from writer/director Tom Holland (Child's Play), which debuts exclusively on-line at the Strike TV website this September. Strike.TV is the new internet platform for Hollywood talent that was created during the Writers Guild Strike. Holland is no stranger to the horror genre, having penned the screenplays for Psycho 2, The Beast Within and later writing and directing horror classics Fright Night, Childs Play and the Stephen King adaptations for Thinner and The Langoliers. 5 Or Die marks Hollands grand return to the genre and introduces genre fans to a brand new killer unlike anyone youve ever seen cinematically thus far.
