This series is the only Saturday morning cartoon adaptation of a SCTV (1976) or Saturday Night Live (1975) character.
In an episode where Ed was getting his tonsils removed, Martin Short appears on-screen, a second time, encouraging the viewers that the only way to save Ed is if everyone starts "one hand clapping". His first on-camera appearance was in "Count Floyd's Scary Stories," playing Skip E. High, who was supposed to sing a scary story, when he sang a song about his wife.
The second animated series ever to feature live-action segments, the first was Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling (1985).
Ed Grimley has briefly joined the Marines, worked in a factory, driven a hansom, been a chef to a famous comedian and played a triangle solo while standing in with the local orchestra but it is never stated what Grimley actually does for a living.
At the beginning of the opening sequence, a live-action Ed Grimley (played by Martin Short, in stop-motion) appeared in a cartoon, before a live-action Count Floyd (played by Joe Flaherty, also appeared in stop-motion), until the every ending, he found his animated character suit that he eventually donned himself to.
