You need to iron the dog....
FlashCallahan29 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Two street peddlers, Jack and Barney, arrive in Florida looking for a better and wealthy lifestyle, when Jack falls for Olivia, a young heiress running a shelter for orphaned children which is threatened with closure.

Jack enrols both of them at a finishing school to learn the manners of the upper classes in order to fit in and hope Oliva's uncle will approve of Jack wanting her and help her obtain an inheritance to save the orphanage....

I'm really surprised that there is so much love for this movie, I was expecting something way ahead of its time, but no, I got a forgettable film from the eighties.

But maybe its my fault. If I had saw it around the time I was fifteen, I might be on of those stating its one of the greatest comedies ever made.

Maybe if is not seen superior movies in this sub genre like, Dumb and Dumber, Wayne's World, Bill and Ted, even Night at the Roxbury, I might state the above too.

But I really much doubt that.

Even though it precedes the above movie by many years, the plot and the narrative is as old as the hills. Its a class war, the rich win because they are rich, but in the end get usurped by the street urchins, because they have all the best jokes and are helped by Denholm Elliott (the best thing in this movie).

Toward the beginning of the final third, the titular characters get into some peril, but predictable as ever, everything comes up whoopee in the end.

Its not funny, the jokes are puerile, and the leads are not very endearing, or in other words, if you don't care for the leads, how can you care about the film.

Another film I missed in my youth, which I probably would have loved when I was a teen

Which isn't really saying much....

Shallow and brainless comedy saved by the classy Denholm Elliott!!
elo-equipamentos7 October 2020
What should be a good movie was spoiled by a spurious targeting on dumb behavior of the both boys, the eloquent Jack (Michael O'Keefe) and the lewd Barney (Paul Rodriguez ) who impose off-color humor, the plot is thriving and prone to be successful, bearing in mind the nice casting as the iconic Denholm Elliott, Carole Shelley and the stereotyped nerd Eddie (Eddie Deezen), an old acquaintance on those teenager comedy, in the institute to learn the manners has good jokes as the girl that supposedly killed their parents, also the officer White was there for a bad behavior, however the picture caught in the pure nonsense and tasteless humor offers by Paul Rodriguez, too much crude, nasty and foolish, the storyline is addressed in a point of no return with a shallow proposition, aside the classy Denholm Elliot in a clever and high class character, all others are dumb and scarce!!

Ridiculous Hilarity
sidewaysman22 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
This Movie is absolutely hilarious. Not only because of the writing and acting, but because it is so...insane. Every Scene exists merely to justify the next, and every five minutes you find yourself thinking "how in the hell did the characters get into this?" Paul Rodriguez uses this movie as nothing more than a platform for his standup routine. *SPOILER* The most insane scene in the movie occurs during the end, in which the creators of the movie invented a game known as "Crosscourts." IT was at this point that I realized I no longer had any idea what was happening. Even so, when it was all over, I discovered taht I had loved the movie and had not wasted my time. My Advice is to be wary if you don't like lunacy and madness, but otherwise, go for it.

As bad as the title suggests
Tito-82 May 1999
I can freely admit that crude and tasteless humor can sometimes be very funny...however, this is not one of those times. I might have laughed a few times during this mess, but for the most part, I was simply in awe of the stupidity. And during those times when it wasn't quite as dumb, there was usually nothing going on, and so the movie got boring as well. It's not like I had high expectations for this film, after all, the word "whoopee" is in the title, but it was actually even a little worse than I thought it would be.

Awful cringy humor
djomac-173491 August 2019
Paul Rodriguez's part is horrible. Not sure if it's the lines he was given or his delivery but suspect it's both. It's pretty much 5-year-old humor, although an actual 5-year-old would be funnier. He absolutely ruins this movie.

If you can ignore his parts, which is pretty hard to do, the rest of the movie isn't too bad. Standard light goofy 80s comedy. There are so many other good 80s flicks to choose from that this one is easily passable. I can see why it only made 1/18th of it's budget back at the box office,

This is Pauli Rodriguez's best role ever ...Eddie Deezen is great .. It is a movie to have fun with .. SO you have to sit down and wonder to your self ? do fish have .....? And what page was Eddie told to go to ? What makes good Frisbee's ? Where did Peabody go to ? what the hell is crosscut's ? And you probably will want to keep this away from the kids and great grand ma !

Beating "High Society" at their own game
rochelle_zimmerman25 August 2005
This was by far one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It is SO 1980's. This movie is SOOO politically incorrect and is chocked full vulgarities, innuendos, and just overall silliness. The fact that this movie is an "Equal Opportunity Offender" is what makes it so great. Don't watch this movie if you cant take a joke.

If you are ready for 88 minutes of laughter at the expense of crude jokes and questionable acts with food (you will never look at a roasted turkey or a roasted pig in the same manner ever again), then go and rent this movie.

Please keep in mind that the production studio has not yet released this to DVD, so if you go looking for it at your local video store, check the VHS section. *Peace in your 'hood* - The Infochick

I think it's great!
modrummer27 October 2004
This was one of the favorite movies of me and my friends!

Yes, the humor is a bit ..... juvenile at times. But that's the magic of it. We always got a kick out of it. They use high society for their own gains. Which in itself is hilarious! Paul Rodriguez gets away with saying things that we all wish we could! Paul Rodriguez' greatest character! I am waiting for it to come out on DVD. As soon as it does we all are going out and getting a copy!

Why doesn't this have cult classic status?
maixiu28 October 2014
Every couple years this movie comes to mind and I visit the IMDb page for it, just to enjoy the fact that there is a small number of people who remember it and enjoy it for what it is -- a brainless, vulgar comedy that hits the bullseye time and again.

I wonder how much film wound up on the cutting room floor, because at 88 minutes the box office version of the film is tight and unrelenting. I suspect there were some scenes filmed that just didn't stack up, so full credit to whoever edited this down. I can guarantee the best bits made it into the final cut. At no point does the movie hit a lull. Also not mentioned often is that the truncated soundtrack is pretty decent for such a low-budget entry.

And by best bits, I mean some of the funniest comedy of the 80s. Michael O'Keefe's character gets embroiled in a love story (which fortunately never detracts from the humor of the film) leaving Paul Rodriguez to provide rapid fire comedy, and boy does he deliver. The movie bounces from classic scene to classic scene, with Rodriguez getting most of the great lines, delivered in an arch manner that prevents the viewer from disliking him or thinking him obnoxious. For me, the comparisons to Dumb and Dumber are off the mark, as neither of the two principal characters in this movie are portrayed as idiots. Because of that it's a bit more challenging to wring laughs from them but the script successfully answers that challenge. There's plenty of broad humor, but it's backed up by snappy dialogue.

I don't suppose this will ever get its due, but if you've just seen this for the first time, welcome to the club. There are some more of us out here that got it too.

One of the funniest movies made
Lars_Ohlsson21 February 2005
When I saw this movie the first time I thought it was soso. Since I'm a listener to Mike Oldfield I thought I'm going to give another chance. I looked at it again this time when I wasn't tired. What a super movie! The jokes gets so lost in the translations so you shouldn't watch it if can't follow the English. Obviously you have to have a certain sense of humor to really appreciate a movie like this. It's not the plumpness in the jokes made by Jake's partner but instead the total charm of these dim-wits who try to make it. I told my friend at the pub about the last joke "as long as I have a face..." and I got a couple of good laughs from some girls that overheard our conversation. A movie I really recommend.

Cheers

Rude, crude, and absolutely hilarious
scottdeastman8 August 2000
This movie is certainly not for everyone. Easily offended? Nope, not you. Only appreciate high-brow humor? No, not you either. However, if you enjoy crude humor, this is perhaps the funniest movie you will ever see. Now, as long as I have a face...

The sleeper comedy of the century
Movie-Timer8 May 2010
Y'know, I find it amazing...So many obscene-budget movies nowadays offer so little and deliver even less. Weak story lines, poor dialogue, and no originality... Then we have The Whoopee Boys. Like great Bugs Bunny episodes, I could watch this thing over and over and over (and I have). On the outside, it doesn't look like much, doesn't cast massive stars, but it delivers in so many intricate comedy-in-your-face ways. O'Keefe and Rodriguez play off each other perfectly. It's not that I roll on the floor laughing (well, maybe in some parts), but that I laugh on the inside, emit the odd guttural snicker, and I feel good after seeing it. There aren't very many movies that do that. For example, I just finished watching a couple of bombs: Crazy on the Outside (Tim Allen) and Fantastic Mr. Fox. TERRIBLE - don't see them. Yet here we have this innocent film made over twenty years ago that takes you by storm and engulfs you before you know what hits you.

Dumb and Dumber before it was fashionable
3rdworld18 December 1998
A great movie if you understand what you are getting into. Check your brain and all shreds of rational thinking at the door. The acting is over the top and the serious dialogue is completely unbelievable as there really is no true point to this movie. That is precisely why I love it.

Long before Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels made idiocy popular on the big screen with "Dumb and Dumber", two enterprising men, Paul Rodriguez and Michael O'Keefe, strove to make completely base humor acceptable to the American masses. They definitely succeeded. These two (and the able supporting cast) make what easily could have been a poor movie into something funny. One has to wonder exactly how much ad-libbing was going on in this one (at least on Rodriguez' part).

Don't miss the charm school scene with the wine tasting. The only other time I had fallen out of my chair laughing was when Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were trying to douse the fire of the peppers in their hamburgers with ketchup and mustard. Those of you who have attentively observed both will understand what I mean.

Great Low Grade Humor in Abundance
spams-324 April 2006
Excellent low grade humor in abundance. Hilarious movie with many memorable quotes... I still remember a few after seeing this over 12 years ago...

Barnie Caught shaving with a car mirror in the hotel pool Manager:"Are you people guests here?" Barnie:"POTENTIAL Guests? YES!" HAHAHA

"Rock Me Amadeus!" not even gonna explain that one... HAHAH!!!

"Is that mean old lady squeezing your genitals?"

"I wanted to thank you for only giving me the clap. These days it's refreshing to meet a girl with curable diseases."

"No! We no see Fluffy! What your dog look like? Your dog have big, juicy hind leg?"

Paul Rodriguez Rocks. That is all.

This movie contains dirty humor....I laughed my butt off!!
rainiac18 October 2000
One of, if not the, funniest movies I've ever seen. The downside is the humor is rude, uncooth, foul-mouthed, nasty, sexual innuendos, stupid and just plain idiotic!! Guaranteed to make anybody laugh if they can stomach it. 8 pts.

Never beaten in 20 years
simonhair20 October 2006
Okay, I see that from the comments that this film was made for the US market and as we both seem to be diverse in opinion when it comes to humour. This gem I first watched as a rental, as I could find nothing more in the shop that interested me. Well for a change it paid off, as I to this day still talk about the funniest film I have ever watched. Yes it's base humour but it's base humour at it finest. I spilt my beer in the scene with the posh woman holding the dog and he asks the dog "is that nasty lady squeezing your genitals"? I have recently returned from Cannes where all the woman carry their dogs and that scene kept flashing back to me. This film is a peach and a rarity, dumber and dumber came nowhere near it in laughs per minute.

I am laughing so hard reading the reviews of the funniest movie ever made
seanasnow821 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
My brother and I in 1987 we sacking out in the living room and this movie came on Showtime. I watched it again in 1994 with a friend. Its got a simple story line, but the characters are OUT OF THIS WORLD FUNNY. Two guys head to Florida, meet a hot woman and need to go to this institute in the everglades to learn manners to save a children's school. I mean how dumb right, the sound track gets you motivated to keep watching. When They arrive at the institute they run into the Butler and the humor blasts off with the name of the butler and Paul Rodriquez's response!!! The first night of "gentlemen school" the funniest scene ever is the dinner scene. I friggin watched this movie about ten times, and every time the dinner scene floors me. Crude stupid simple low brow cracks. This is my favorite comedy of all time. And the weird Lacrosse type game at the end. I really don't understand why more peeps don't go bonkers for this film. funny, funny funny. Another movie like this is "Young Doctors in Love", "80s"

great movie
alan-c00per1 January 2005
Amazed to see a very low rating, this is a movie you have to watch two or three times to see all the one liners and humour this movie possesses, sure its foul and disgusting in places but you would not be watching if it was not like that, This is a film that will bring tears to your eyes, excellent choice of characters all fitted there parts very well, all I can say if you have not seen this movie and like me you have a very warped sense of humour, buy it and watch it you WILL love it.For making me totally laugh my ass off I have to rate this little gem from the past 10/10,and so will you, buy it watch it you will love it.

This is my NO.1 comedy film of all time!
toiyabeshawn20 October 2006
I first saw this back in the day and I was sore for a week from laughing so damn hard! I bought a used copy from a local video store a few years ago and finally wore it out showing it to all my friends so I finally spent a small fortune and bought a brand new VHS copy online. This movie is base line juvenile slapstick humor at it's very best. Crude at times but I'm a sick humor type of person so this just works for me! I highly recommend this to anyone with an open sense of humor, you will love it! The studio needs to release this on DVD, I can't believe some of the junk I find on DVD and this excellent comedy is just stuffed away in some vault somewhere! Come on and get with it and release this on DVD for the masses to enjoy!
