Sex & Nudity

  • A man is seen showering from the waist up. In this same scene, a man and a woman are seen from the shoulders up in stalls getting changed. The man says "me Bob, you Dana" and looks in over the edge of the stall at her. Her bra is seen as she exits the showers, and she says "me outta here". The man playfully whips her with a dry towel.
  • No on-screen sex or nudity. A man tells his wife over the intercom that "they can do all their cooking in bed". She tells him to be quiet because people are listening.
  • A drunk man is seen wearing nothing but a pair of boxers.
  • Pregnancy and periods are mentioned when a woman finds herself immune to the virus.

Violence & Gore

  • Blood is frequently seen but the film isn't overly gory. Much of the gore you'd expect is offscreen and never visible.
  • An ill man is used to wedge open an elevator door. The doors repeatedly hit his body until his friend returns to carry him away.
  • A man's entire arm is shoved through a plate glass window. He is kicked in the crotch and knocked unconscious.
  • A man has his arm nearly broken and his foot stepped on and crushed.
  • Characters are seen with large blisters on their hands and faces and bright glowing turquoise matter on their skin as a result of infection.
  • A scientist shoots himself in the head with a revolver. His collapsed body is seen with the gun beside it.
  • Men are hacked to death by factory workers. Their struggling and gagging and choking is heard and the axes are seen falling.
  • A man is repeatedly shot with a machine gun.
  • A man drives a car into a brick wall.
  • A woman lights several co-workers on fire.
  • A woman sees her fiancee's dead body being taken from the factory and cries as the man's father hugs her.
  • Joanie is electrocuted twice with the wires from a gooseneck lamp, screaming loudly.

Profanity

  • "Jesus Christ" is used once or twice.
  • "stupid cow" is said.
  • "ass" is said. once.
  • "asshole" is said once.
  • "Son of a bitch" is said twice.
  • "bastard" is said once.
  • One character says, "to hell with Conolly!"
  • "shit" is said once.
  • "crap" is said once.
  • "damn it" it said several times.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Dr. Fairchild is an alcoholic who often is seen with a bottle of whiskey. It is mentioned that he drives drunk and was fired from his job for being a drunk at work.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The whole tone of the movie, including the frequent references to real-life bioweapons projects, the Soviet Union and a nuclear holocaust may disturb some viewers.
  • The main characters get trapped in a bioweapons factory with a hoard of psychopaths.
  • A man's eyes glow creepily because his contact lenses are infected.

Violence & Gore

  • Men and women are injected with large needles.
  • Laboratory animals begin violently attacking each other. Two mice are seen biting and clawing, and monkeys are seen screeching and fighting. A man uses a pistol to shoot them in a mercy killing before incinerating the bodies.
  • A group of infected, crazed people use a heavy concrete beam to attempt to ram a steel door open so they can murder the people trapped on the other side.
  • A military official gets punched and beaten by a frustrated local.
  • Schmidt slowly gets sick until succumbing to the virus. He tries to scare Joanie away but she stays, and the other sick workers push him up against a glass window. He bleeds to death when the glass cuts him.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man uses a gun-like device to inject people with Thorazine and antibiotics, after which he jokingly quips, "Clint Eastwood would LOVE one of these!"
  • Many of the townsfolk on the outside of the BioTek facility are shown to be drinking beer and behaving badly, including using a gun to smash in a door. They speak in slurred tones and one man in particular is scolded for being drunk ("Vic, you oughta know better.")

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Several people are killed, including major characters like Dr. Nielsen and Schmidt.
