As many of the film's fans know, Sam Raimi's slapstick medieval horror comedy "Army of Darkness" was not a hit upon its release in North American release in February of 1993. The film's budget was a modest 11 million, and it made only 21 million worldwide, little enough to be considered a bomb. After the film's release on VHS, however, a cult audience swiftly began to amass around it. If you were in high school in 1993, one might hear lines of Sam and Ivan Raimi's screenplay shouted randomly in hallways, each one a cult password for horror nuts in the crowd. It wasn't long thereafter that "Army of Darkness" began rounding the midnight movie circuit. It has been a mainstay in pop culture ever since.
Or, to paraphrase lead actor Bruce Campbell in his biography "If Chin Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor," a blockbuster is when a million people see a movie ten times.

American Horror Story: Freak Show, Season 4, Episode 12: “Show Stoppers”
Written by Jessica Sharzer
Directed by Loni Peristere
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
As the messy season of television that has been Freak Show nears its conclusion, the show doesn’t present many signs of coming to a satisfying end. Although certain arcs have worked, Ryan Murphy and co. haven’t followed many of the stories extensively enough to bring them to a satisfying conclusion.
One primary problem is the writers’ inability to pick a character to focus on. While this kaleidoscope-like approach to storytelling can work when approached well (like in The Wire, to cite the best example that comes to mind), in the case of Freak Show, it mostly results in a mess of half-baked characters who fail to hold the viewer’s interests or sympathies. This approach is also what, one imagines, led the writers...

American Horror Story villain Dandy is so wildly entertaining, it's almost a distraction from the rest of the show...
This review contains spoilers.
4.9 Tupperware Party Massacre
As American Horror Story gains traction and propels itself towards a season finale like an out-of-control carnival ride, it feels as though there's a certain loss of poise. Perhaps it's due to the fact that our hero, Jimmy, is an aimless drunk who is distracted by grief and the gigantic bosoms of the side show's new fat lady. Perhaps that's due to the fact that Stanley and Elsa's complicated plot to capture and decapitate the twins continues to run into complications. Perhaps it's due to the fact that the show's biggest villain, Dandy, is so wildly entertaining that it's distracting from the rest of the show.
After opening up with Twisty as the focus, the show has become the Dandy Mott Murder Hour, and...

American Horror Story: Freak Show, Season 4, Episode 9: “Tupperware Party Massacre”
Written by Brad Falchuk
Directed by Loni Peristere
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
Though American Horror Story: Freak Show has been deprived of its most horror-like element for over a month now, the violence has picked up considerably over the past two weeks, and the latest episode, “Tupperware Party Massacre,” showcases its most graphic bloodletting yet. Despite Dandy seeming like a less conventional horror villain than the psychotic clown, he’s made up for his less than terrifying appearance with a seemingly insatiable bloodlust.
As with last week’s “Blood Bath,” the teaser centers around providing greater insight into Dandy’s ruthlessness. This week, however, Esmerelda takes on the role of therapist, and Dandy tells his own story, in part due to his mother’s untimely exit last episode. Dandy shows off a vastly different side of...

American Horror Story plays with the concept of perfection - and perception - again in this week's episode. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
4.8 Blood Bath
American Horror Story seems to be having a lot of fun this season playing with the concept of perception. We perceive Paul as abnormal because of his tattoos and his deformed arms, but he's got a good heart and seems to be a very popular and loving person. Elsa perceives herself as a big star, the main event, the attraction that brings people into the tents to check out her freak show, but in reality, she's not that great at holding an audience, her singing is okay, and she's definitely not going to win any awards come Oscar season (though Jessica Lange probably has another Emmy waiting for her) as her acting is actually pretty bad. Of course, Elsa's abilities as a performer...

American Horror Story: Freak Show, Episode 8: “Blood Bath”
Written by Ryan Murphy
Directed by Bradley Buecker
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
After the somewhat languid pacing of American Horror Story: Freak Show in the season’s first half, this week’s aptly titled episode “Blood Bath” kicks things into another gear. Though Twisty’s death felt unexpected and climactic (despite occurring only five episodes into the season), the clown’s untimely departure now appears relatively inconsequential compared to this week’s events.
The cold open hints at the episode’s overall trajectory. As Gloria sits on a couch recounting Dandy’s troubled childhood, the viewer gets a stronger sense of just how twisted her son is. While the show always made it clear that he was far from a normal child, the images of him preparing to cut a young girl’s hair off and the discussion...

Breathe, people. It’s only been hours since the latest heart-stopping American Horror Story: Freak Show episode, but it’s important to stay calm. (Believe us, we’re still in shock, too.)
Last night’s episode came for all of us and didn’t stop until we (oh, and two pivotal characters) were dead. Dying. Done. The phrase “we can’t” has never applied more to a situation than the latest Freak Show installment, titled “Blood Bath.” Which, geez, is that the understatement of the year or what?
We didn’t want to intervene with Ryan Murphy’s slayage of our souls, but we feel there’s no other option. So much happened last night, and it needs to be addressed. Welcome to your VH1 Ahs: Freak Show therapy session. We’re here for you…spoilers and all. (Consider that a warning.)

Well, there's good news and bad news from tonight's TV. Let's get to the bad news first... Rant: American Horror Story: This episode can't say it didn't warn us of that ending. With a title like "Blood Bath," we're not sure what else we could have possibly expected. After killing his mother due to her not loving him enough to murder Regina – or simply due to the insane whims of a total psychopath – Dandy shot Gloria in the head and promptly took a bath in what we can assume to be her blood. We also learned that Dandy was born of a tryst between Gloria and her second cousin. Frances Conroy deserved better. Rant: American Horror Story: The same could be said for Kathy Bates,...

Tonight's American Horror Story was appropriately titled "Blood Bath," and they weren't kidding. Not only were two main characters killed off, but crazy man-boy Dandy literally took a bath in his victim's blood. As Jimmy struggles to deal with the latest loss at the camp, Elsa goes out to recruit a new member since the show will always go on.

Hey, "American Horror Story: Freak Show" peeps. Yep, it's sadly true. You guys will have to prepare for a night without your favorite show as it's taking a hiatus tonight for reasons unknown to me at the moment. But fret not. The new episode 8 of season 4 labeled, "Blood Bath," is scheduled to air next week, Tuesday night, December 3rd at 9pm central time, so be sure to jot that down on your TV calendars. FX did release the promo/spoiler clip (below) for episode 8, last week, in case you haven't checked it out yet. The official storyline for episode 8, reads like this: "Recent disappearances around camp, are going to end up, raising Ethel’s suspicion of Elsa. Gloria will make a last ditch effort to contain Dandy’s bloodlust."...

Recently, FX served up the new, official synopsis/spoilers for their upcoming "American Horror Story: Freak Show" episode 8 of season 4. The episode is entitled, "Blood Bath," and it sounds like things will get quite intriguing as too many disappearances start making Ethel's suspicions run very high. Gloria tries to contain Dandy's blood hunger, and more. In the new, 8th episode press release: "Recent disappearances around camp, will raise Ethel’s suspicion of Elsa. Gloria is going to make a last ditch effort to contain Dandy’s bloodlust." The episode was written by Ryan Murphy and it was directed by Bradley Buecker. Episode 8 is set to air on Wednesday night, December 3rd at 9pm central time on FX.

My mind almost melted after watching this short, "Attack of the Helping Hand!" Shot in 1979, this six minutes of lunacy is about a woman being tormented by a murderous Hamburger Helper mascot as she tries to cook dinner. Starring Linda Quiroz (Stryker's War), Sam Raimi appears as a milkman who (spoiler alert!) is killed by the five-fingered psycho. The film was written and directed by Scott Spiegel, who wrote Evil Dead II as well as appearing in the Evil Dead trilogy and most of Sam Raimi's subsequent films. (Spiegel has other genre credits to his name, including Hostel III and From Dusk Til Dawn 2.) Raimi helped shoot the short, along with some guy named Bruce Campbell.

Evil Dead was Bruce Campbell's first film, so you may be asking, "what could have come before?"
In 1972, Bruce Campbell appeared in a short film directed by school chum Josh Becker. Becker would go on to work on all the Evil Dead movies with Campbell and Sam Raimi, as well as writing/directing movies like Lunatics: A Love Story and Stryker's War.
But at the age of 14, Bruce Campbell appeared in Becker's first short film, "Oedipus Rex." Based on the Greek tragedy, the short was shot on a lunch break at school (evident by the chalkboard title cards and the auditorium background). It is a silent film, and is pretty much what you would expect a 14-year-old to shoot during his lunch period.

The cracked fever dream of a movie titled Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except is best known for its impressive Evil Dead pedigree, featuring several key players from that classic indie film both in front of and behind the camera.
Spearheaded by Josh Becker (who worked on The Evil Dead ’s second unit) and Scott Spiegel (co-writer of Evil Dead 2), this “Marines vs. the Manson family” saga from 1985 has built a solid cult of its own over the years. Much like The Evil Dead, it began as a short film made to raise funds for a feature-length production. The shot-on-8mm Stryker’s War (also the alternate title for the feature) starred Bruce Campbell as Sergeant Stryker and included much of the same plot and dialogue.

It's another slow week for DVD and Blu-ray junkies as there are barely any new releases that are really worth talking about. The alien invasion flick The Darkest Hour is the only major title in stores and was mostly overshadowed by all the other blockbusters back in December (according to reviews, we didn't miss much). Elsewhere Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in the otherwise mediocre The Iron Lady and Werner Herzog explores serial killers on death row in his latest documentary Into the Abyss. As for Blu-ray releases, we have the 60th Anniversary Edition of A Streetcar Named Desire, a newly restored edition of George Melies' A Trip to the Moon, and Josh Becker's cult classic Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except starring Sam Raimi. What will you be buying or renting this week? Check out the full list of releases after the jump.

Synapse Films' Intruder was one of the finest Blu-ray releases of 2011, and they've followed it up with another of the films from the Michigan Mafia, Josh Becker's Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except. Becker was in charge of the lighting on Sam Raimi's breakout feature, The Evil Dead. That small core crew of people went on to make a huge impression on the low budget feature world. The group includes such exploitation favorites as the Raimi Brothers (Sam, Ted, Ivan), Becker (Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except), Scott Spiegel (dir. Intruder, writer Evil Dead 2), Bruce Campbell (Bruce Fucking Campbell), and producer Rob Tapert. A second retro movie poster is available for horror, thriller Sweatshop. The film took the critics choice award at the Texas Blood Bath Film Festival. Also shown at the New York Horror Film Festival as part of its premiere, Sweatshop has been described as "The Sid Vicious of horror films - nasty, dirty, and unrestrained" (Dreadcentral). It’s Hazard time again!
The original Matt Hazard game, while not the most polished game on the market, had some of the best humor present in a game in recent years. As a giant parody of video games, and starring the likes of Neil Patrick Harris and Will Arnett, it’s sad to see that more care wasn’t taken in the game’s production.
Over at Destructoid, the sequel, Matt Hazard: Blood Bath And Beyond, has been officially announced. Rather than being a disk-based release like the first game in the series, Matt Hazard will be making his way to the world of digital downloads, on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Store.
This time around though, Hazard will be entering the 2nd dimension for a side-scrolling game that seems similar to Shadow Complex and Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Like last time, you can expect the humor to be top...

Actress Julin passed on a couple of exclusive pics (see them below) from Spirit Camp, a cheerleader-slasher flick in which she plays one of the lead roles. The film was written, produced and directed (and shot, edited and scored) by Kerry Beyer, an acclaimed fashion photographer who won the Slamdance Anarchy Film Showcase and was a semi-finalist for a Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting.
Julin appears in the film as Rachel, leader of the popular girls at a cheerleader camp. When Goth chick Nikki (Roxy Vandiver) is sent there as part of her rehabilitation from a juvenile correction facility, the two enter into a bitter rivalry—until other members of the squad begin dying horribly, and Nikki, Rachel and the other survivors must band together against the mysterious maniac who’s stalking them. The cast also includes Brandon Smith, Megan Moser, Amy Morris, Jon Paul Burkhart, Kavon Rafat, Katy Rowe, Phil Leggett and George Brock.

Spirit Camp, directed by Kerry Beyer and starring Brandon Smith, Julin, Marco Perella, Denise Williamson, Amy Morris, Alyssia Dujmovich, and Jon Paul Burkhart, centers upon what happens when streetwise Goth Nikki (Witchcraft 13's Roxy Vandiver) is forced to attend cheerleader camp as part of her rehabilitation from a juvenile correction facility. She clashes with the popular girls and finds herself embroiled in a bitter rivalry with the bitchy ringleader Rachel (Sweatshop's Julin). But when members of the spirit squad start turning up dead, the girls must put aside their differences and struggle to survive the murderous rage of a crazed psycho-killer lurking among them!

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.
There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone...

Still have some burning questions about last night's True Blood season finale? Or anxious to gather some clues about just what creator/executive producer Alan Ball has in store for the residents of Bon Temps when True Blood returns next summer? You've come to the right place. I caught up with True Blood czar Alan Ball this morning to talk about last night's season finale, deconstruct the second season, and find out about what's coming up on Season Three of HBO's addictive vampire drama. In this exclusive one-on-one interview, Ball hints at what's on the horizon for Sookie and Bill, new creatures, Sam Merlotte's quest, Jessica, a possible romance for Lafayette, the Vampire King of Mississippi, Sophie-Anne, and much, much more. Ball also told me that the writing staff had broken the fourth script for Season Three of True Blood already and that shooting is tentatively slated to begin December...

Writer/producer Mel House sent along a new poster and two exclusive photos from his nightmarish new feature Imago; you can see them below. The occasion is the announcement that his Upstart Filmworks will debut the Imago trailer at the Texas Blood Bath Film Festival in November.
“Our 2007 feature Closet Space is screening as part of the festival,” House tells us, “and we’ll be unveiling a new Walking Distance clip as well as the Imago trailer right before that. So for all those Texas folk who keep clamoring to see our multidimensional tentacle extravaganza…this may be your only chance this year, as we have no domestic release lined up yet. And you’ll get a taste of our next couple of features, which hopefully will show our future trajectory.
“As for Imago and Distance,” he continues, “it actually looks like they’ll be completed about the same time,...

Three new stills have come our way -- from another dimension -- for Chris Warren's upcoming indie effort Imago, and we figured we'd share because you, dear readers ... are the wind beneath our wings.
Imago follows the exploits of a young woman who is investigating the disappearance of her brother. Inside his apartment she finds the past, present, and future colliding within an alternate dimension. And with reality slowly transforming into a Lovecraftian nightmare, she only has so much time to solve the mystery and escape with her life.
The film stars Natalie Jones (Walking Distance), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5), Danielle Jones (Sweatshop), Melanie Donihoo (Closet Space), Parrish Randall (The Quick and the Undead), and Debbie Rochon (Nowhere Man). It is directed by newcomer Chris Warren and produced by Mel House's Upstart Filmworks with a screenplay by Warren and House. It is associate produced...
