Brandy Klark (Plaza) is an intellectually successful but socially inept student at an Idaho high school in 1993. This differentiates her starkly from her popular sister Amber (Bilson), who mocks Brandy for still being a virgin. Brandy protests that she almost slept with an older guy named Rusty (Scott Porter) once, but quickly realises that she will have to obtain greater experience soon or face further ridicule. She duly sets out to seduce Rusty by taking a job as a lifeguard at the pool where he works but faces several obstacles along the way. Can her fellow socially awkward friend Cameron (Simmons) help her out?
I have a long-standing love of teen movies. Be they the sweet, life-affirming films of John Hughes...

So let's get right to the point: Nicki Minaj was the Most Gif-able new judge in the American Idol season premiere. But Mariah Carey wins night two, if only for this Gif: Amazing. Maybe the most amazing Gif ever. Probably the most amazing Gif ever, right? And from amazing to bizarre, when Nicki did this: And Mariah countered by doing...this? ????????????????????????????? An early warning that night two would debut the Mariah we've all been waiting for: The Lamb with a Few Loose Screws. Who seemed a little confused on whether Idol is a real job or not. Or maybe just confused on what a "job" is. And thought everything was "cool...

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

Heading to DVD and Blu-ray this week we have a movie that squandered some great comedic potential, a couple of documentaries about fascinating and eccentric people, and a long lost show featuring a computer generated TV personality. Shawn Levy's Date Night didn't take full advantage of a Steve Carell and Tina Fey team-up, but it's still probably worth at least a rental; other comedies out this week include the Death at a Funeral remake, The Joneses starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, and the first two National Lampoon's Vacation movies on Blu-ray. Criterion also re-issues Terry Zwigoff's fantastic documentary Crumb along with his debut feature Louie Bluie, and Shout! Factory continues their streak of repackaging nostalgia with Max Headroom: The Complete Series. Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Date Night [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Death at a Funeral [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) The Joneses [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Letters to God [7] Multiple Sarcasms [8] (+ Blu-ray...
