This is the first movie in the Hong Kong action comedy series Pom Pom. Richard Ng and John Sham play detectives Chau and Beethoven, who go through misadventures to protect a young girl from a crime lord, as she possesses a ledger that contains all of the gangster's nefarious activities.
As with many Hong Kong comedies, after the main plot is identified, many subplots are inserted to give the film added intrigue. This is evident in this film, but the direction by Tung Cho 'Joe' Cheung keeps much of the story intact and easy to follow. Ng and Sham has a sometimes frustrated partnership, but their teamwork and chemistry are delightfully depicted and funny to watch - from them chasing a suspected killer around a bathhouse wearing nothing but towels to a thrilling car chase in heavy traffic. Ng and Sham also does some clever comedy, such as playing pranks on their colleagues, Chau trying to entertain policewoman Anna at his home while to hide an unknown prostitute, and several slapstick puns.
The acting is spot-on and not over-the-top. It's a fine Hong Kong comedy and was a favorite in my childhood days. However, I just wished that ***spoiler ahead*** the detectives would have been given more credit in the drug case toward the end. ***spoiler ends***
