Wonderful
murli78622 February 2005
Second Sight: A Love Story is a beautiful love story. It is a nice tale of a blind lady who is so independent and content in life, until she falls in love. The guide dog who becomes her companion and her friend has blended so well with this movie. Its only when u see such movies that you tend to realize how wonderful a rose smells, the sounds of birds, the noise of traffic and so many normal events in life that we ignore.

Its a pity that this movie did not get the recognition that it deserves. I happened to watch it on the Film channel at Kuwait. And i enjoyed every minute. Its a poignant tale and its beautifully presented.

Elizabeth Montgomery Shines in Demanding Role !
Wallyworld117 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Elizabeth Montgomery gives a touching performance as Alexandra McKay, a woman who has been blind for nearly 20 years. Alex is a stubbornly independent woman who allows few people into her very private and sheltered world. Despite her handicap, she tries to live as normally as possible, working at a city art museum where she teaches other blind youngsters about the beauty of sculpture. Arriving home late one evening, Alex's world is shattered when she is assaulted by a burglar and finds it necessary to recuperate with her brother Mitchell and his concerned family. Mitchell urges Alex to have a risky eye operation which she is afraid of, but does agree to attend a special school working with a trained guide dog named Emma. Emma helps restore faith and trust into Alex's life and makes it possible for her to love again when she meets a compassionate art dealer named Richard Chapman (Barry Newman). Elizabeth Montgomery shines in a very demanding role and clearly did her homework, learning all of the nuances and daily struggles of a blind person which add many layers of depth and conviction to her splendid performance ! Emma, the golden Labrador retriever who acts opposite Miss Montgomery is a real scene stealer, and will have you reaching for a box of Kleenex during several key scenes. Supporting cast is also top notch under the skillful direction of John Korty.

Interesting lovely movie, but puzzling if you have read the book first

Warning: Spoilers
Please note this review contains spoilers both about book and the movie. Sheila Hocken's "Emma and I" is an autobiography book on which this movie is based. It has been one of my favourite books for years, so was looking forward to watching the movie. Although I liked the movie characters and the dog was just adorable, it left me a little bit wondering why did they change it so much from the book. The book was amazing and perfect by itself. In real life, Sheila and her husband (yes he became her husband) lived together for many years with Emma and had a child middle-named Emma after her dog. Emma lived with them for many years before the operation took place. Emma was a chocolate Labrador, not a yellow one. But the bit I found the most disappointing was the movie ending. Emma actually stayed with Sheila and the family in real life, as she was coming to the end of her working life anyway, and also guide dogs organisation has never had a case of someone regaining their sight, so they let Emma stay. And in case anyone is interested what happened to real Emma, she lived to 16 yrs old with Sheila & the family. Sheila was so smitten with her that she decided she will breed chocolate labs and they ended up having 6 dogs including a chocolate German Pointer who belonged to her husband. They also had Siamese cats too, and lived happily ever after as a wonderful big family. Sheila wrote 7 books about Emma, I cannot recommend more reading them all, they will touch you way more then the movie. You are likely to find them second hand on Amazon and Ebay, I don't think they are on sale anymore in regular bookshops. So movie gets a reduced 8 for the unnecessary changes, but it is worth watching.

A heartwarming love story of a woman and her dog
SeanSSC16 March 2000
This little gem is perhaps Elizabeth Montgomery's finest performance. She portrays a blind woman who first acquires a guide dog, becomes very attached, then is able to regain her sight and makes a decision that's a real tear-jerker.

Too often we forget what a brilliant talent Ms. Montgomery was, thinking of her only as "Samantha" but this movie is a vivid reminder of her excellence as a dramatic actress.

Unfortunately it's a hard movie to find. Look for it on cable and don't miss it if you have a chance.

Slow but compelling
Wizard-82 September 2013
I am pretty sure that there will be some people who will consider "Second Sight: A Love Story" somewhat drawn out. To a degree that is correct - the movie could have been cut down by a significant portion without hurting the story at all. As it is, it does seem a little too long. Also, I think some people will find the story somewhat predictable. When the blind main character, for example, rides a horse for the first time, can you guess what happens? Yeah, I guessed it as well.

All the same, despite the predictable plot twists and the slow pace, I did find the movie rewarding. For starters, the blind main character has been written to not be one note. Though she is overall sympathetic, there are a few episodes when she acts in an unlikable manner. It's also interesting to see how she deals with many things in her life with her handicap. And there are some scenes of surprising emotion, especially the final sequence. In the end, patient viewers will find enough rewards with this movie

😢 A 5 Handkerchief Tearjerker Masterpiece
floridacalisurferboy7 March 2022
🏆 SECOND SIGHT is an Emotional Powerhouse ... IF YOU CAN WATCH THIS MOVIE til its end and Not Shed A Tear 😢 I DON'T EVER WANT TO MEET YOU OR KNOW YOU IN MY LIFETIME... because it would signify to me that you have a frigid heart and would not have the capacity to love in your lifetime... This Movie is that Litmus Test to Humanity... ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY is brilliant... The Dog deserves an Emmy 🏆 A movie with tenderness, empathy, compassion and humanity... Sociopaths should not attempt to watch it because it would mean nothing to them... Others, with tender hearts ❤ take this as a warning that your heart will break wide open... ❤

Intimate insights into the life and conditions of a blind woman
clanciai10 July 2019
A sensitive film about the conditions of a blind lady, how she manages by herself but finally gets fed up with loneliness and finds a loving companion, who nevertheless loses in comparison with the relationship and intimacy she finds in the company of a dog - it's the dog who makes the film. Elizabeth Montgomery makes an impressing performance, quite convincing all the way, and although most of it is predictable, you will enjoy it to the end. It's a heart-warming story of relationships and affection, and like Elizabeth you will never forget that dog.
