Dena Dietrich, a character actress who appeared in numerous TV shows and on Broadway but was instantly recognizable as the face of Mother Nature from a popular, long-running commercial campaign for Chiffon margarine, died Saturday, Nov. 21 of natural causes in a Los Angeles health care facility. She was 91.
Her death was confirmed by SAG-AFTRA in a statement honoring Dietrich’s service as a former SAG National Board member for nearly a decade.
With an impeccable delivery and a lightning shift in mood from matronly sweet to thunderous anger, Dietrich first uttered what would become a classic commercial catchphrase – “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” – in 1971. The commercials, created by the D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles advertising agency, had Dietrich dressed in a diaphanous white gown and a daisy-chain laurel, test-tasting what she was sure to be her very own natural butter. Told by a narrator that she was actually eating Chiffon margarine,...

Because daytime soap operas can run for decades, shows have more chances to succeed than some of their primetime counterparts. ABC’s “General Hospital,” which premiered in 1963, holds the record for most victories with 13, the first of which came in 1981. CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” is close behind with 11 victories; it joined the winner’s circle the first time in 1975 after hitting the airwaves in 1973.
CBS’s “As the World Turns,” which ran from 1956-2010, comes in third place with four wins, tied with NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,...

The contemplative track, guided by a Guilele arpeggio, sees De Augustine assessing his loneliness and seeking out love as solace: “All this life has been a disguise/Except for the hand in mine.” Stevens contributes his trademark wistful vocals and guitar-playing to the song. The music video, filmed last month, sees him wandering an empty, washed-out beach.

TV writers often draw inspiration from movies.
Sometimes they write characters quoting a film's most iconic lines.
Sometimes they borrow the whole plot.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - DC's Legends of Tomorrow
Anachronisms can tear the timeline apart and create an homage to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
On DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 Episode 4, the Legends travel back to the 80s.
Why?
A young Ray Palmer and his adopted alien need rescuing from government agents.
Amadeus - 30 Rock
Amadeus tells the story of composer Salieri's resentment towards the more talented Mozart.
On 30 Rock Season 2 Episode 13 Jordan discovers he has a Mozart-like talent for creating pornographic videogames.
This leaves Frank as jealous as Salieri.
The homage to Amadeus is further cemented with a montage set to Mozart's Requiem: Lacrimosa.
The Seven Samurai/The Magnificant Seven - The Mandolorian
It's no secret Akira Kurosawa's films and westerns were major influences on Star Wars.

Veteran soap opera actress Marj Dusay has died.
She was 83.
Dusay has a television career that included stints on All My Children, Days of Our Lives, Guiding Light, and Santa Barbara.
Her career on the small screen spanned decades, and the actress well-known for taking over roles left behind by exiting actresses.
The actress made her TV soap debut in 1983, when she replaced Carolyn Jones as Myrna Clegg on the CBS soap, Capitol.
She was a part of the cast right up until the show was canceled.
Dusay followed up that role with one on NBC's Santa Barbara, where she took over the role of Pamela from actress Shirley Ann Field.
Pamela was Mason Capwell's mentally unstable mother, and TV fans lapped up all of the excellent storylines Dusay got to work with.
Dusay went on to work on Days of Our Lives in 1993, temporarily replacing actress Louise Sorel as Vivian Alamain.

Is it possible we could be taking Martin Scorsese for granted? At November’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival tribute, watching Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel in “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver,” De Niro and Joe Pesci in “Goodfellas,” “Casino,” and “The Irishman,” and Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “The Wolf of Wall Street,” it seemed so clear that Scorsese, who is nominated for both a DGA award and the directing Oscar, is the greatest director of our time.
What he accomplished in “The Irishman” would be an extraordinary feat of filmmaking for anyone. It’s not like the Oscar-nominated performances from Al Pacino as driven labor leader Jimmy Hoffa (working with Scorsese for the first time) and Joe Pesci as mafioso Russell Bufalino (pulled out of retirement for one last go with the master), or De Niro came out of nowhere. Scorsese worked hard with...

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home is building out its cast. Allison Miller will join her A Million Little Things co-star James Roday, along with Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Kadeem Hardison (A Different World) and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) in the movie set to air later this year on Peacock, NBCU’s upcoming streaming service.
The film, which is named after Tim Omundson’s Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter, will explore the marriage between Shawn, played by Roday, and Maggie Lawson’s Juliet after the pair’s nupitals at the end of the first movie.
Written, directed and executive produced by Psych creator Steve Franks, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home focuses on Lassiter, who is ambushed on the job and left for dead. Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino saluted Martin Scorsese‘s dedication and risk-taking at his Santa Barbara International Film Festival tribute, while the filmmaker spoke about the importance of “individual artistic expression.”
More than 300 people attended the black-tie gala on Thursday night in Scorsese’s honor at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara, where festival exec director Roger Durling asked, “Can you think of another director who remained so relevant for so many decades?”
That fact was punctuated with generous clips (assembled by Mike McGee) of the filmmaker’s work, including a sizzle reel with dozens of film moments that demonstrated his wide range since his 1973 breakthrough with “Mean Streets.”
In presenting the Kirk Douglas Award to Scorsese, DiCaprio said, “One of the most remarkable things about Marty is the generosity that he exudes to everybody on the set. He treats every one of us as a real collaborator and he...

The Daytime Emmys recently floated the idea of combining Best Younger Actor in a Drama Series and Best Younger Actress in a Drama Series, and an announcement by the television academy on October 31 confirms that change. But those aren’t the only new gender category guidelines that have been announced.
The younger acting awards were established in 1985 for performers aged 25 and under. Over the years the categories have awarded future primetime TV and film stars like Julianne Moore (“As the World Turns”), Anne Heche (“Another World”) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (“All My Children”), along with other noteworthy nominees like Melissa Leo (“AMC”), Jane Krakowski (“Search for Tomorrow”), Robin Wright (“Santa Barbara”), Nathan Fillion (“One Life to Live”) and Shemar Moore (“The Young and the Restless”).

Vincent Irizarry is on his way to “The Bold and the Beautiful” to play Dr. Jordan Armstrong starting on Monday, August 26. The daytime veteran explained to TV Insider, “This was at the request of Brad Bell [executive producer/head writer]. He reached out to my [representatives] and I learned that they had this role they’d like me to do. It’s recurring and I can say that it has to do with the baby reveal [that Phoebe is really Beth]. I’ll be playing opposite all the main characters.”
The actor is no stranger to soaps. Far from it. He got his start on “Guiding Light,” where he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Best Younger Actor in 1986 for playing Lujack Luvonoczek. After that character was killed off he spent a couple of years on “Santa Barbara” before returning to “Gl” as Lujack’s twin brother Nick from 1991 to 1996.

Over his long career in international sales, Armando Nuñez Jr. has handled just about every kind of TV program, from game-changing primetime dramas, to daytime soaps, to trashy talk shows.
Some were big hits right out of the box, some were sleepers, and one show was so bad that a top foreign buyer left the screening room after 10 minutes to yell at the studio executives responsible for the pilot. Here Nuñez recalls some of his most memorable experiences in exporting television — and slices of American culture — around the world.
Moonlighting
Original network: ABC
Airdates: 1985-1989
Nuñez was not long out of Fordham University when he got a job working for ABC Video Enterprises, the network’s distribution arm. He was part of the team that sold the network’s smash romantic dramedy “Moonlighting,” which starred Cybill Shepherd and made a star of Bruce Willis. “It was a unique show,” Nuñez says.
