During Russell T Davies’ first time in charge of BBC behemoth Doctor Who, one of its regular writers often wrote some of its more memorable and popular stories.
Scottish writer, Steven Moffat, had made a sizable name for himself in the U.K. with television shows such as Press Gang and Coupling, and would bring new terrors to young Whovians in the form of Gask Mask Zombies and the Weeping Angels. When Davies came to leave the show, Moffat was the natural choice to replace him.
He cast Matt Smith (The Crown, House of the Dragon) as the youngest ever actor to play the role and made huge strides in the U.S. cementing Doctor Who’s popularity. Moffat would leave the role of showrunner after seven years (and after casting Peter Capaldi to play Smith’s successor).

It’s tradition for a TV star to get to take a memento or two of their time on the show when they leave, even if they have to grab it by illicit means, but it sounds like Jenna Coleman pinched half of the Tardis when she left Doctor Who a few years ago.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show to promote the latest series of her hit period drama Victoria, Coleman revealed a few of the things she took from the set when she quit playing Clara Oswald full time back in 2015. It’s not that the actress is particularly amazing at burglary, though, just that she had some help from the props people.
“I stole quite a lot actually. I stole it, but somebody helped me, in the props department so I feel like that was okay. I stole a piece of tardis. A proper Gallifreyan full-on piece...

Doctor Who returned to our screens on New Year’s Day in an exciting adventure with the Daleks titled “Resolution.” Moving the show’s annual winter special from its traditional Christmas Day slot to January 1st was seen as a risky move, so all eyes have been on the viewing figures for the episode to see if the schedule shift paid off. And looking at BBC America’s numbers, we’re not sure that it did.
Compared with 2017’s winter special, Peter Capaldi’s swansong “Twice Upon a Time,” “Resolution” fell by 29% in the key demographic of 18-49 year olds. In total, it averaged 1.4 million viewers, with 552,000 coming from the 18-49 range and 666,000 from those aged 25 to 54 – according to “Live + Day” data from Nielsen.

It’s been rumored for a while, but today we got confirmation that this year’s Doctor Who winter special won’t fall on Christmas as it has ever since 2005 but will instead air on New Year’s Day. While we’re not getting any less Who than usual, fans are in uproar at the change as it marks the end of a tradition that would’ve reached 13 years in 2018.
The news, which was revealed in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, was found to be “one change too many” by some, following the move to Sundays rather than the traditional Saturday slot during season 11 and obviously, the stylistic alterations in the show itself.

“Doctor Who” premiered its groundbreaking new season on Sunday, October 7, during a simulcast all around the world, but star Jodie Whittaker watched the premiere with fans at Madison Square Garden during New York Comic Con at 1:45pm Eastern. Just two hours before that she discussed the new season and its significance with press at the Javits Center. She’s the first woman ever to play the title time traveler in the show’s 55-year history. Listen to her discuss her historic role in the podcast above.
Whittaker loved the “energy” in the script when she first read it. “[Showrunner Chris Chibnall] says I brought it, but for me it bounced off the page,” she admits. “This is all the things I love about playing. It’s movement. It’s jumping from thought to thought but having a clear purpose. It’s hopeful. It’s enjoying the detail in an epic scale. It’s all those things,...

When this Sunday comes along, we’ll be just one week away from the premiere of Doctor Who season 11 – finally! It’ll have been a whopping 15 months since Jodie Whittaker was first unveiled to the world as the Thirteenth Doctor and at last we’re about to see her in action. And now that we’re nearing the air date, the BBC has given us a new promo photo to tease the opening episode, titled “The Woman Who Lived.”
The still features Whittaker in the loose-fitting clothes of her predecessor, Peter Capaldi, who she regenerated from in Christmas 2017’s “Twice Upon A Time.” So presumably, this scene takes place early on in the premiere before she’s chosen her own wardrobe. It looks like trouble is afoot, too, as something appears to have broken through the metal grating that the Doctor’s staring at. An alien nasty, perhaps?

This Doctor Who Season 11 premiere review contains No spoilers. It was originally published on Den of Geek UK.
The Tardis just about lands. Frazzled, but intact. Inside, for the first time since last Christmas, we see Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, stepping through a massive collection of bras, knocking over make-up containers and a pile of thick, miserable, monthly fashion magazines. She presses stop on the DVD, frustrated that she won’t get through her regular evening viewing of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Guzzling a Mirage and lemonade, she quickly pops into the bathroom for half an hour to freshen up, and she emerges.
All those haters on the internet had it absolutely bang on. Who knew?

“We don’t get aliens in Sheffield.”
For generations, we’ve associated the world-famous Time Lord with Daleks and other cosmic beings found on alien worlds, but for “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” Doctor Who‘s season 11 premiere, Jodie Whittaker’s series newcomer will be heading to…Sheffield, a small English city located in South Yorkshire.
It’s not the most glamorous setting for a Doctor Who premiere, but it seems there’s a good reason why the Thirteenth Doctor has paid a visit to there, as she’s pictured here investigating some sort of abandoned compound. If you’ve been following Doctor Who‘s production cycle since the tail-end of “Twice Upon a Time,” you’ll notice the same barbed wire fencing from those leaked set photos, while it appears the Doctor has all three companions on standby just incase things go awry.

With the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith earning his first-ever Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown,” its a good time to look back on the history of timelords at the Emmys. Is Smith the first Doctor to contend? Or is there there a long line of Emmy-winning Doctor Who players?
Well, that depends on which characters you classify as canon Doctors. We’ll get back to that later but, for now, let’s go through the standard Doctors from first to current.
Predict the Emmy winners now; change them until September 17
So, there you have it! Of the 13 usual Doctors, Smith is the first and only one to be nominated for an Emmy. However, we must point out that 12th Doctor, Capaldi, is an Oscar winner for Best Short Film (“Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life”) – Emmy nomination or Oscar win? Hmmm. Toughie.

A new Time Lord isn’t the only change that is coming to “Doctor Who” this year.
The long-standing sci-fi series is moving to Sunday nights from its usual Saturday slot, and will premiere on Oct. 7, BBC America announced Wednesday.
The show’s new time slot hasn’t been announced, but the network’s U.S. premiere will start at the same time as its U.K. debut. The premiere episode, titled “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” will be followed by a special encore in its new regular primetime evening slot.

Incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall has confirmed that Doctor Who season 11 won’t pay much attention to the Time Lord’s gender swap.
The show’s new 10-part season will make history by introducing Whovians to Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, who replaced Peter Capaldi during last year’s Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time.”
It was an astonishing moment in Doctor Who history, but those wanting a more thorough explanation about the Doctor’s apparent gender swap needn’t get their hopes up; season 11 will touch on the character’s regeneration process, and little else. As a matter of fact, according to Chibnall, there’s no real gender-related story included in the upcoming series, which is more to do with Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord exploring the mysteries of the universe.
The gender issue is pretty by-passed. It’s not really a kind of a gender-related story or anything like that.

“All of this is new to me. New faces, new worlds, new times,” says Jodie Whittaker in the brand new trailer for “Doctor Who” season 11 (watch above). “So if I asked really, really nicely, would you be my new best friends?” The new trailer premiered at San Diego Comic Con on July 19 and then debuted online. The clip is just under a minute long and doesn’t reveal much about the storylines, but it’s the most footage we’ve seen yet of the groundbreaking new season.
“Doctor Who” premiered back in 1963, telling the story of the time-traveling title character, an alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels through time and space, usually with the help of human companions. The show aired continuously for 26 years before its cancellation in 1989. It returned for a film in 1996, but it didn’t come back to the airwaves full-time until 2005.

Thanks to the special Comic-Con edition of Entertainment Weekly, we’ve finally got some fresh news about the long-awaited eleventh season of Doctor Who. Following her brief first scene at the end of 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” the new run will see Jodie Whittaker make her full debut as the Thirteenth Doctor. What’s more, Chris Chibnall is stepping in as showrunner so the sci-fi series will truly be undergoing a complete regeneration.
Fans are eager to find out what season 11 will be like, then, as the new lead and writing team is sure to give it a rejuvenated tone and spirit. While speaking with EW, Whittaker herself was on hand to tease that the watchwords of this new era of Doctor Who will be “wonder” and “hope.” She also joked that she has to speak “a hundred miles an hour” when in character as the Time Lord Lady.

Doctor Who season 11 will see the full debut of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, after her brief appearance at the end of 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time.” Despite knowing of her casting for a whole year now, though, we still have very little idea about what sort of Doctor Whittaker will be. Thankfully, one of her co-stars on the new run has helpfully compared her to a past incarnation of the Time Lord.

Last week’s Doctor Who season 11 leak has been brought before the California federal court as BBC officials attempt to identify the source.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the British Broadcasting Corporation is said to be taking this leak very seriously indeed, as it showed off Jodie Whittaker’s first appearance as the world-famous Time Lord. The fact that said footage emerged four months before the show’s expected return in October left Doctor Who fans furious, and the BBC has now issued a subpoena to Tapatalk, a mobile community platform.

Emmy voters have never taken to the long-running British sci-fi series “Doctor Who,” which at 55-years-old is only 15 years younger than the Emmys themselves. Of course, much of that is because of geography. There hasn’t always been much interest in or access to “Who” on this side of the Atlantic, and Emmy rules require that a program at least be an American co-production to qualify. But this year the television academy can make up for lost time by nominating not one, not two, but three Doctors who are on this year’s ballot.
The Doctor is a time-traveling alien who has lived for thousands of years and periodically changes form. This year the 10th (David Tennant), 11th (Matt Smith) and 12th (Peter Capaldi) iterations could contend, though only one of them is on the ballot for actually playing the Doctor. Capaldi is in the running for Best Movie/Mini...

I’m the patron saint of lost Emmy causes — is it still too late for “Buffy” and “The Wire”? — so while my colleague Marcus James Dixon recently singled out actors and actresses he’s rooting for who are on the bubble based on our racetrack odds, I’m focusing on the deep bench of 100/1 long shots who deserve recognition this year. But sometimes long shots pay off.
Last year nine actors earned Emmy nominations despite distant 100/1 odds in our predictions: Jane Fonda, Zach Galifianakis, Kathryn Hahn, Wanda Sykes, Samira Wiley, Mandy Patinkin, Shannon Purser and Michael Kenneth Williams and Bill Camp.
Emmy voting ended on June 25, and the nominations will be announced on July 12. So here are the top five male actors with 100/1 odds I’m hoping the television academy left room for.

The 2018 Emmy ballots were released to the public on June 11 to coincide with the start of Emmy voting, and there’s one surprise for “Doctor Who” fans. You won’t find the long-running sci-fi show competing as a drama series. Instead, you’ll find it in the race for Best TV Movie. That’s how Steven Moffat‘s other show, “Sherlock,” grabbed Emmys in recent years.
“Doctor Who” aired its 10th season from April 15 to July 1, 2017, so most of those episodes were eligible to compete in last year’s Emmy race. But then the show returned on December 25 for its annual Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon a Time.” And it was especially meaningful as it was the farewell episode for Peter Capaldi in the title role. It ended with the time-travelling Doctor regenerating into his 13th form — and the first ever female form (Jodie Whittaker) in the 55-year history of the show.

Doctor Who episodes boil a lot of timey-wimey plot into bite-size chunks of around 45-50 minutes. So, it’s not uncommon for special installments to be extended by 10-15 minutes or so. It turns out that Peter Capaldi’s final appearance as the Twelfth Doctor, in last Christmas’ “Twice Upon A Time,” was originally quite a bit longer than this, however, as the initial cut came in at a feature-length 90 minutes.
Former showrunner Steven Moffat revealed this interesting fact while taking part in an interview with his predecessor in the big chair, Russell T. Davies. The chat sees the pair speaking on the subject of the recent release of a batch of novelizations of their TV episodes. On the topic of the Twice Upon A Time book, Moffat explained that author Paul Cornell had a lot of additional material to bulk the story up with as there was around 30 minutes removed from the broadcast episode.

Though Doctor Who doesn’t return to TV for another six months, April is still a good time to be a Whovian. BBC are releasing four new novelizations of 21st century episodes of the show, written by a bunch of the series’ top writers. And one that’s definitely a must-read is The Day of the Doctor novel, which will expand on the already jam-packed 50th anniversary special.
The book is written by the original episode’s scribe Steven Moffat, the man who was in charge of Doctor Who from 2010 to 2017. While chatting about the process of translating “The Day of the Doctor” from the screen to the page, Moffat revealed that it was a hard task, as the episode changed so much from the shooting script to the actual broadcast special.
“I had a few ideas about how it might translate, but really, as with any writing, I just dived in.

As with any major announcement, Jodie Whittaker being named the 13th Doctor was a closely guarded secret. So much so, in fact, that higher-ups at BBC braced themselves for spoilers by pretending that the new star of “Doctor Who” was going to be another man — an effort that included using a male body in the visuals presented to their visual-effects house for storyboards of the scene in which the Doctor regenerates.
“The BBC actually had us quote her first scene before we knew it was gonna be Jodie, via storyboards,” Louise Hastings said, according to Radio Times. “And the storyboards had been drawn with a man as the Doctor, so that was a bit of a surprise! I was looking through a list of the favorites to be the Doctor and comparing them to the pictures, but I was wrong, I couldn’t figure it out. They threw us off the scent.

Now that Peter Capaldi has regenerated into Jodie Whittaker, as seen in the Doctor Who Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” we’re officially in the era of the Thirteenth Doctor. That said, we’ve still got to wait a large chunk of the year before season 11 arrives at some point this autumn. When it does finally materialize, however, the new Doctor hopes that her adventures through time and space blow fans’ minds.
But just what will those adventures consist of? Unfortunately, we can’t answer that just yet, as absolutely no details have been revealed about the plot of the upcoming episodes. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few intriguing theories floating around the web, though, and Radio Times has today compiled a fairly compelling report which outlines what they think may be the opening plot line for the season.

As detailed in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine (h/t Radio Times), Coleman was originally earmarked to appear alongside Mackie and Lucas. However, the stars never quite aligned, as Rachel Talalay reveals:

Well, this would certainly explain the conflicting reports about Pearl Mackie’s involvement – or lack thereof – in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time.”
Prior to release, Whovians were left on tenterhooks as Steven Moffat et al. cast doubt over Mackie’s potential role. The outgoing showrunner was naturally trying to keep any and all story details under wraps, particularly as “Twice Upon a Time” signaled the long-awaited changeover involving Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker, who will now lead Doctor Who into 2018.

Doctor Who‘s Christmas specials are often the most watched episode of the year, but this most recent one was even more important than most, since it acted as Peter Capaldi’s swansong as the Twelfth Doctor. It was crucial to get such a significant installment as good as can be, then and by all accounts, “Twice Upon a Time” delivered the goods and then some, giving us an emotional, enjoyable and well executed conclusion to Number 12’s story.
Though full of fantastic and memorable scenes, the most talked about is, without a doubt, the moment when Peter Capaldi regenerates into Jodie Whittaker, which takes place at the end of the episode. It’s what everyone had been waiting to see for months now and the Who team certainly pulled it off, sending Capaldi’s take on the character off on a high note.
But how exactly did it all come together?...

The latest Doctor Who Christmas special had a lot going for it. It was Peter Capaldi’s final hour, it saw him team up with David Bradley’s First Doctor, Pearl Mackie’s Bill returned and there was even a guest role for Mark Gatiss. Despite all that, however, the biggest talking point was, of course, that we finally saw Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in the episode’s last few moments.
Without a doubt, this is what everyone’s been waiting for for months now, given that the actress is the first woman to play the iconic role and her casting was hugely controversial, with many claiming that the Doctor should always be male. Over time, though, the divide seemed to get smaller, with almost everyone eventually agreeing to give Whittaker a chance.

The upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special is a hugely important episode for a whole bunch of reasons. There’s Peter Capaldi’s regeneration, Jodie Whittaker’s arrival, David Bradley as the First Doctor, Mark Gatiss is guest starring and, last but not least, Pearl Mackie is making her final appearance as the Doctor’s latest companion, Bill Potts.
While promoting the upcoming outing, titled “Twice Upon a Time,” on BBC Breakfast, the actress echoed previous comments from the Doctor Who family by saying how “emotional” the special will be. Though Mackie knew that going into the screening, it still caught her off-guard just how tear-jerking it was.
“I spent so long saying to people: ‘Oh just be prepared. It’s quite an emotional episode. It’s Peter’s last episode, my last episode. Bring some tissues,’ and I was watching it at the screening and I didn’t bring any tissues.

Their time on the beloved sci-fi adventure stretches as far back as the 1990s, when the Powers That Be launched an ill-advised movie spinoff. And, well, the less said about that, the better.
Getting back to this year’s Christmas Special, though, “Twice Upon a Time” heralds Moffat’s last hurrah, while Mark Gatiss plays a man out of time known only as ‘The Captain.’ It’s also a remarkably moving episode, according to Gatiss, who previewed the imminent festive special during a lengthy interview with Entertainment Weekly:

We dig deep into the Doctor Who Christmas special, Twice Upon A Time...
One Doctor dying at Christmas is unfortunate, but two? That’s just cruel. They’re certainly going out on a high though, at least judging by the number of references and callbacks in the episode. It’s our longest one ever, so grab a mince pie, raid the spirits cupboard and join us for our traditional festive viewing notes.

We kick off proceedings with footage from William Hartnell’s final serial The Tenth Planet, which aired from 8-29th October 1966 and was also notable for the introduction of the Cybermen – specifically the ‘Mondasian’ variety last seen in Series 10 finale The Doctor Falls.

The Doctor’s latest companion, Bill Potts, had quite the rollercoaster ride of a character arc in Doctor Who season 10. At first, she was an ordinary university student but, thanks to her adventures with the Doctor, her life was turned upside down.
In the emotional finale, Bill was tragically converted into a Cyberman. However, she was saved by her lost crush Heather and the pair went off to travel the universe together as shapeshifting space puddles. Hey, it makes sense in context. Well, no, it doesn’t really, but just roll with it.
Anyhoo, Bill is back for one last outing in the upcoming Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon a Time.” As we just explained, the character eventually got a sort of happy ending, so her return in the episode does make sense. However, actress Pearl Mackie has hinted that there’s more to her comeback than meets the eye.

Doctor Who‘s Christmas specials are often the most watched episode of the year, but this one is even more important than most as it’s Peter Capaldi’s swansong as the Twelfth Doctor. It’s crucial to get such a significant installment as good as can be, then…even if you have to tear up the script and start again late in the day.
In an upcoming BBC Radio 2 interview (set to air on Thursday), Capaldi revealed that he was so “hypersensitive” about making the special pitch-perfect that his “discomfort” about something led showrunner Steven Moffat to rewrite a whole scene overnight.
“I had sort of expressed a little discomfort about one of the scenes leading towards the end – and he rewrote it. He rewrote it completely, and quite brilliantly, overnight. Which is fantastic. The downside is I had to learn it overnight!”
