After Shaheen Bhatt recently opened up about her battle with depression, her mother and veteran actress Soni Razdan says she was always worried about her elder daughter and tried to be her pillar of strength.
In a TV interview, Shaheen talked about her book "Never Been (Un)Happier", in which she has articulated about her tryst with depression and how incidents during her childhood pushed her into that direction.
Talking about how she emotionally balanced the situation, Soni told Ians: "I am a mother. Whether it is Alia or Shaheen, at any point in time, if they are suffering, I am the one who gets affected badly.
"I am the mother, and the emotional chord with my children is naturally strong. So there are times when I might get sleepless nights because I am worried. Particularly in Shaheen's case, I was worried because, at this young age, she went through so much.

Mumbai, Jan 9: Towering box office collections are not the right parameter to declare that a movie is good, says filmmaker Shyam Benegal, known for his masterpieces like "Ankur" and "Mandi".
"Popularity does not indicate that a film is good. It just shows that it is popular. It does not indicate anything else," Bengal said Thursday at a press conference to launch a month long festival dedicated to his films on Zee Classic.
A film's objective is decided by its director, he said.
"The film that one makes is based on the director's perspective. What he wants from the film is very important. If he wants popular success.

Bollywood has always been a male-centric industry and there have been just a few actresses far and between who have managed to portray strong characters time and again. Joining the likes of Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, and Tabu is Vidya Balan after her stupendous run at the box office with The Dirty Picture and Kahaani.
Vidya has managed to win over everyone in the industry with her performance. So much so that Shabana took time off from her shooting to catch up the movie. “I had to watch Kahaani because of Vidya,” said Azmi, “I was bowled over by her performance. As an actor, I could see she was making all the right moves throughout the film. There was not a single artificial note in her performance.”
However, everything comes with a prize and Shabana warns Vidya against getting into an all too familiar circle. “If she continues to dominate her films,...

Mumbai, Dec 27: Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal describes his 49-year-long association with late Satyadev Dubey as a 'stormy friendship'. He says they worked together on six films but after 'Mandi' the theatre veteran refused to work with him, though it didn't affect their personal equation.
'We were very close friends right up to his death on Sunday. In fact, I rushed back from Delhi where I was attending parliament, for his funeral,' said Benegal.
'I came to Mumbai in 1959. We were friends from 1962 till his death. We shared a very informal relationship. We could tell each other anything without fear of offending one another. You could call our friendship stormy. I valued his comments. He, I presume, valued mine..

Well Done AbbaReliance Big Home, Rs 299Rating: *1/2 There was a time Shyam Benegal used to fire up his hero or heroine. It used to spur them to fight the system — whether patriarchy (Bhumika), feudalism (Ankur) or social hypocrisy (Mandi). Now, at 76, Benegal perhaps sees the systemic flaws as a grand farce. His heroes — whether it’s Mahadev of Welcome to Sajjanpur or Armaan Ali of Well Done Abba — try to beat the system with its own flaws, with satire by their side and uncharacteristic music on their lips. Armaan, an unlettered driver working in Mumbai, gets home ...

Three of Bollywood's biggest heroines Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta look set to sparkle on screen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming film Heera Mandi, based on the famous red light district of Lahore.
The script has been adapted from Mayank Austen Soofi's "A Sudden Visit to Pakistan: Heera Mandi The Dream Home of The Whores", which Bhansali bought the rights to back in July 2007. Initally Rekha, Madhuri Dixit and Shabana Azmi were associated with the project, and later Rani Mukherjee and Sonam Kapoor were also linked to it.
Now with the buzz that Ash, Kareena and Preity have been finalised, it looks as though the once rumoured to be shelved Heera Mandi will finally see the light of day. Well Done Abba
Well Done Abba has turned out to be a sort of a tragedy. Yes, it’s a satirical take on our system, more particularly how government schemes actually become cash cows for corrupt officials while the targeted beneficiaries – the common man – remain as poorly off as ever. It even raises occasional laughs, if not guffaws, through its ironic representation of all the loopholes in the system that are exploited to the hilt by those who are part of it. The victim being, the common man, in this case Armaan Ali of Chikkatpally near Hyderabad, who ekes out a living by driving the luxurious car of a well-off businessman in Mumbai and has a perky daughter back home to look after. With a gamut of characters that reflect the rot in the system in the backdrop of the growing lack of access to water across the nation, Well Done Abba,...

None in their senses will ever question a director of the caliber of Shyam Benegal when it comes to making films, but when Shyam Babu (as he is fondly referred to) decided to make a comedy, quite a few .idiots' (in the real sense!) did question his decision. After all this was man who had made such serious films like Mandi, Ankur, Manthan and Junoon etc. to name a few, and so expecting a comedy from him was a bit too much. But creativity knows no bounds and Shyam Benegal proved the...

Mandi and Kristina saw the movie, without their guys, and offered up their opinions.
Mandi writes: We got to the theater early because we didn’t want to risk not getting a seat. (Getting a good seat was a nice reward for being there 2 hours early.) We were 5th in line and everyone was very nice and reading magazines all about New Moon, or had the books themselves that they were reading. We chatted with several people and everyone was excited. Security was very high, which kind of heightened the excitement for everyone.
Once we got into the theater (about 30 minutes before start of the show) you could feel the excitement build. Is Jimmy Fallon a Twi-hard? I think he must be. On Late Night tonight, he got all wide-eyed and fluttery over a still-ailing Kristen Stewart, who was making the last stop on her New Moon publicity tour. (Fallon joked early that there were hundreds of people outside before the show screaming his name—so he would get the hell out of the way because Bella was on the premises.) Jimmy had just seen the movie and was ready to gush about Stewart's performance, the casting, the effects, the graphics, the music, and Taylor Lautner's abs. Like Mandi, I find...

I'll say this much for vampires who don't fight the urge to score their blood straight from the human's neck: They sure as heck seem to have better senses of humor! Or at least that seems to be the case when you compare witty bad-boy Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder, pictured) to dishy-but-broody bro Stefan (Paul Wesley). Indeed, last night's fourth Vampire Diaries installment (your regular recapper, Mandi Bierly, had the night off, Fyi) started out feeling like a particularly mean-spirited standup routine by a guy who's been undead (and not exactly thrilled about it) for a good century or so.

Mumbai, She had shaved her head for Deepa Mehta's "Water" though she wasn't in the final film that released, and had put on a lot of weight to look like a madame in a brothel for Shyam Benegal's "Mandi". Now veteran actress Shabana Azmi has once again put on 25 kg for Gurinder Chaddha's "It's A Wonderful Afterlife". "Yes, you've heard right. I have put on 25 kg and I'm waddling around unrecognisable to all except those who know who I am," Shabana told Ians over phone from London. Hugely overweight, Shabana is said to be having the time of her life playing a hysterical Punjabi woman in the movie.
