One of the best of Alan Bennett's works, and Alan Bates and Coral Browne are just as good

"How can he be a spy?" says Guy Burgess in Moscow, as he quotes the attitude of his former fellow British upper-class diplomats, "He goes to my tailor."

He's talking to Coral Browne, an Australian actress who was appearing as Gertrude in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet in Moscow. It's 1958. She has visited Burgess in his drab apartment which he shares with his government-sanctioned male lover, an aging youth who speaks no English. Burgess has barely learned a few words of Russian. "I know what I've done to deserve him," he says, "but I don't know what he's done to deserve me."

Burgess, along with Kim Philby, Donald Maclean and Anthony Blunt comprised the Cambridge Four. They were a group of Cambridge undergraduates who, in the Thirties, were recruited to become Soviet spies. Although they were products of proper English upper-class breeding, they disliked intensely the very aspects of English life that provided their own privileges. The Soviet system seemed so much better. Burgess was a most unlikely spy. He was flamboyantly gay, often flamboyantly drunk and talked too much about what he was doing. After all, he says, "There's no point in having a secret if you make a secret of it." Throughout WWII he and Maclean, working in Britain's Foreign Office, regularly delivered copies of secret Allied plans to their Soviet controller. Even though much evidence pointed their way, no action was taken. They eventually had to flee Britain in 1951 and finally showed up in Moscow in 1956. Kim Philby did far more damage before he was eased out in a gentlemanly way. And Blunt, an art historian, was publicly identified by the British government only in old age after years of cover-ups. After all, he was adviser to the Queen on art matters and had received a knighthood. The old-boy network wanted no embarrassments.

Coral Browne wound up in Burgess' Moscow apartment because he went to one of the Hamlet performances. As usual, he was drunk. He found his way to her dressing room by accident and proceeded to vomit in her basin. She was not amused and hadn't the slightest idea who he was. When she had to leave for the second act, Burgess managed to steal her soap, cigarettes and face powder before leaving. "One should have asked," he tells her later. "One is such a coward." But later he slipped a note under the door asking her to lunch and to bring a tape measure. Burgess wanted gossip from London, but Browne didn't know anyone in his upper-class circles. He wants to be taken seriously, but seems merely charmingly superficial. Burgess is a self-destructive, self-aware drunk, yet also a proud Englishman. More than anything else, he wants Browne to take his measurements and order some suits for him from his Savile Row tailor when she returns to London. She agrees, but only because she sees no reason why anyone, even a traitor, shouldn't have a suit if he wants. At the end of this marvelous one hour program, most of which is spent with Burgess and Browne talking to each other, we see Guy Burgess jauntily walking over a Moscow bridge wearing a perfectly tailored suit, hand-crafted leather shoes on his feet, a well-cut topcoat over his shoulders and holding up a black umbrella to ward of the beginning snow. Passing him are the comrades in their drab clothing and fur hats, some curious about this unusual creature in their midst. Guy Burgess has become a very well-dressed Englishman...well, English traitor...abroad.

This is a fine example of what an excellent, subtle writer Alan Bennett is. The tone is amusing and wry, but Bennett slips a sharp knife in as he shows the complacency of so many of the British upper-class, as well as the self-delusional foolishness of Burgess. And Bennett makes us appreciate the spine of Coral Browne, unwilling to paint people with the colors the British establishment would have her use. "I'm just an actress," she says, "I've never been interested in politics. But if this is communism I don't like it because it's dull...their clothes are terrible and they can't make false teeth. What else is there?" "The system," Burgess replies, and he's serious.

As excellent as Bennett is, Alan Bates as Burgess and Coral Browne playing herself match him. Browne may have no great passion one way or the other toward English traitors, but she's not about to let others tell her who she can and can't see, even in Moscow. More to the point, she has Guy Burgess' number. People in England can call him anything they like; he'll make amusing conversation out of their anger or contempt. But the idea that they might think he now regrets having to live in Moscow makes him vulnerable. Bates is so good an actor he lets us be amused by Burgess, even like him, but also be somewhat disgusted by him...all at the same time.

Bates and Schlesinger together again

John Schlesinger made his first feature "A Kind Of Loving" with the young Alan Bates. It was an extraordinary debut. They also work together in "Far From The Madding Crowd" and in a TV adaptation of Terence Rattigan's "Separate Tables" with Julie Christie. In "An Englishman Abroad" their artistic relationship is at its peak. The idea came from the incomparable Coral Browne, a true story. They told the story to Alan Bennett and Mr Bennett came out with this piercing, funny, sad true story of a gay British spy living, or surviving his exile in Moscow, without an ounce of resentment. No, all the disappointment, every bit of regret is in Alan Bates's eyes. What a spectacular performance. This beautiful film deserves a serious revival.

I love this drama

I watch it every time it comes on TV. Alan Bates is perfect and the fact that Coral Brown plays her younger self is so perceptive - she's an old woman in the play - does she play herself exactly as she was - if so she was old before her time. Russia looks so grey - it makes London look bright and bustling. And the final scene makes the whole thing worth it.

Moscow in Scotland

One of the best films I have seen, which considering its television origins is saying something. The acting is superb, the atmosphere so rich and distinctive you can smell and taste it, even if you were never in drab, old Moscow. Typical of Alan Bennett, the action is all compressed into small spaces and the dialogue is within the context of small surroundings, whether it be the physical confines of the flat, or changing rooms, or in the spiritual confines of gossip and ideology.

The times when the characters are out in the open are the times of liberation, and comparative quiet. It is then that the character of Moscow comes out, and this is all the more striking as the character is so strong, and yet is played by 2 pretenders: the cities of Dundee and Inverness. The theatre is played by the Caird Hall, Dundee, the slightly oddly designed long hall, described by Bob Hope as the first time he ever played a tunnel, and beautifully transformed into the utterly realistic central theatre of Cold War Moscow. There are also Russian performances by the Grammar School, Clydesdale Bank, and, most lovely, the MacManus Gallery, which plays the British Embassy. There are other scenes, which were filmed in Inverness, although I did once read that Helsinki may have been used for some long shots. Not being a real film buff, I wouldn't know.

The film isn't about spies, politics, wars, cold or otherwise, but about humanity, and what drives and excites us. It has humour, great sadness, and the most amazing sense of being both a delightful confection, and a most genuine and unselfconscious tale of reality.

An Englishman Abroad is, like The Third Man, one of those rarest of moments in cinema in which everything just drops into place, with all from the script to the direction and performances falling into the perfect hands. Coral Browne's recognition that her experiences during (and following) a theatrical tour of Russia, meeting Guy Burgess, were worth making a grand statement on life about was as inspired as the script she made of this. In a running time of just over an hour, exceptional performances by Browne herself and the late lamented Alan Bates, directed by none less than John Schlesinger, make a comprehensive statement about loyalty, betrayal, the cynicism and amorality of all governments across the political spectrum, and personal sacrifice in the cause of what one believes correct. And despite the bleakness with which the British government and establishment are duly portrayed, a wonderful contrast is drawn between truly British democratic values, as voiced by an old British bespoke shoemaker (and reminiscent of the civil service mandarin's words in the car at the end of the also brilliant A Very British Coup), and the foreigner-founded gentlemen's outfitter who merely apes Britishness by pandering to British aristocracy ("By Appointment to Her Majesty"). The cold war settings are very atmospheric, and Bate's role as a man who has sacrificed all the privilege he was born into for the sake of something he believed in paradoxically fits that British value too. His performance as a British establishment in-man of refined tastes, trying to stay sane in the utter impoverishment, loneliness and distrust of his new Soviet circumstance, is profoundly moving even without a hint of self pity or indulgence. And the scene where he, a gay and atheist, attends the Orthodox service for the profound aesthetic experience that it provides, represents - in Bates' peerless hands - an unforgettable portrayal of profound human emotion. Had Schlesinger and Browne padded this film out by a half to reach a respectable feature length, it might not be so obscure but known as one of the elite films of all time.

One of the greatest stories ever shown on TV.

The story is well outlined in another review, so I will relay a fascinating and true prelude. Coral Browne was a very dear friend and we would often go to early movies, enjoy a dinner and sometimes chat until the wee hours. On one particular evening we ended up in the garden and she said she had a story to tell and she also had great hopes to see it made into a film. Well, she proceeded to relate ( as only she could) this amazing saga. We were spellbound. She then said she wanted Alan Bennett to write the screenplay, Alan Bates to play Burgess and, of course, John Schlesinger to direct. Naturally, she would play herself. Typically, Coral had done it all in her mind and was ready to go. There developed one hitch, Bates was tied up for another film, so the fine actor, Dirk Bogarde, was considered; but as time passed, Bates was free and eagerly joined the project. Coral had her first choices and this group of brilliant film makers turned out a masterpiece... a must see film.

A quiet, gentle triumph

Very dry wit joins with a rueful sadness in the 1 hour based-on-truth drama of English traitor in exile Guy Burgess (the wonderful Alan Bates) striking up a brief friendship with actress Coral Browne (playing herself).

Burgess meets Browne when goes to see a cultural exchange production of Hamlet, in 1958, wanders backstage, and throws up in her dressing room sink. In the midst the two find a connection, and strike up an acquaintance.

Full of trenchant observations on both Soviet and British life,, what it means to miss one's homeland, Perhaps the comic absurdity of the two dolts who work at the British embassy is a bit overstated, but generally this is full of beautifully observed moments, a quiet, gentle triumph.

Directed by John Schlesinger. This award laden BBC television movie was based on a true incident involving Australian actress Coral Browne and exiled spy Guy Burgess in Moscow.

Adapted by Alan Bennett. In his introduction at the repeat showing in 2023 talked about how the film was an attack on a Britain destroyed by Margaret Thatcher.

Alan Bates plays Burgess as man for whom the Soviet Union is boring, very much like the British Establishment he worked for. The romance of communism was a myth. Wherever you went in 1950s Europe, life was grey for most.

When he turns up at Browne's dressing room during a performance of Hamlet. Burgess throws up and then invites her for lunch in his flat.

Browne eventually manages to find his grubby apartment and sees first hand his gloomy existence.

The very least Browne could do is to comply with his request to send some new clothing over to him upon her return to England.

Filmed in Dundee which doubles for drab Moscow. The film is as charming as Bate's characterisation of Burgess. I'm not sure the real Burgess was as effervescent as that in real life. He might had drunk a lot to pass the time in his Moscow flat.

Bennett peppers his film with some interesting side characters. The two slightly camp men from the British Embassy wanting to know what Burgess wanted from Browne. Sneering and comedic at the same time. The kind of quaint charm that Burgess once engaged with.

In Britain, Browne meets a tailor who still remembers the customer called G Burgess who has gone away. Still happy to rustle up a suit for him that will wear well at his new home with discretion totally assured. On the other hand another shop refused to supply pyjamas to the treacherous traitor.

At the end a dandified Burgess walks around Moscow while Gilbert and Sullivan's For he is an Englishman is played. I wonder if the title An Englishman Abroad inspired the pop singer Sting to write a song about Quentin Crisp.

the spy who p***ed in our soup...

British made drama based on a true story of a chance meeting in Moscow in the early 60's between an english actress and a british double agent and soviet spy. Coral Browne was part of a cultural exchange tour in 1961 between Great Britain and the Soviet Union touring and giving performances as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. One night following a performance in a Moscow theatre she is approached by a familiar looking gentleman. The man turns out to be the traitor and double agent Guy Burgess now residing permanently in the USSR. Oddly they strike up a friendship and he offers her the hospitality of his small apartment as well as an insiders view of being an honoured if not trusted but permanent houseguest living in a totalitarian state. It is the height of the cold war and even he is followed and surveilled upon. Life it seems is not all bread and roses in the utopian state and Burgess confides in her an aching home sickness for his homeland and even the simplest pleasures of english life. He particularly bemoans the unavailability of certain luxury items and being a dapper young man in his Cambridge days is at a loss even to find a really good suit behind the entire iron curtain. Coral touched by his predicament offers to help. Enough said.

The collusion of director John Schlesinger and writer Alan Bennett have produced an exceptional drama which won a few BAFTA awards following its release in 1993. The performances are highlighted by Alan Bates sad self deprecating portrayal as Guy Burgess and some effortless acting by Coral Browne who plays herself with aplomb. A bit like John Malkovich playing John Malkovich but with an interesting edge. The story also gives us some interesting vignettes into soviet life. When they find their hotel bath is minus a plug, Coral and a fellow actor in fun complain loudly to the hidden microphones. Five minutes later to their amazement the concierge knocks on their door with a...you guessed it. In the end the drama offers its own conclusion on betrayal and those who practise it. As Coral a loyal englishwoman herself accurately summed up to Burgess with whom she sympathised to some extent. "You p***ed in our soup....and we drank it". In other words whatever my personal friendship for you some sins are unforgiveable. This is the life you have unwittingly chosen for yourself. Enjoy...

A charming film

I saw this when it fist appeared on tv, and fell in love with it. An absolute delight, but sad at the same time. After many years I stumbled upon in on VHS, so can now watch it whenever I choose. Well worth watching! Browne and Bates are stunning.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley's People - and An Englishman Abroad. They show you what spying is like, thanks to a haunting atmosphere of gloom, chill, nostalgia, displacement and a weird familiarity. What's missing? Only Kafka's The Trial... Scotland stands in for Russia in this brilliant play by Alan Bennett based on a true story told him by his friend Coral Browne. Browne made few films, but she was a great star of the English theatre in the 30s. This film gives us an idea of her impact. She was 45 when these events happened - and 70 when she played the part of herself, giving her Gertrude in Moscow and bumping into spy and traitor Guy Burgess. She is a diva - swanning around in fox furs with matching hat. The staff at the embassy are caricatured, but probably not overmuch. Some wonderful British character actors play the staff of the Jermyn Street gents' outfitters where she goes to buy Guy a new outfit. "And mum's the word?" "Madam - mum is always the word!" Only one silver-haired servitor refuses to make Guy any silk pyjamas, and gets sworn at for his pains. Browne was an Australian, and though she spoke like an English lady, offstage she swore like a trouper and everybody thought it was hilarious. But the core of the play is her strange date with Guy Burgess in his dingy flat. As in the Le Carre, you feel there is little to choose between Russia and the UK when it comes to drab surroundings, inadequate heating, boot-faced jobsworths, joyless relationships and tiny pockets of luxury. Charles Gray is great as her actor colleague (and wouldn't they have made a wonderful Gertrude and Claudius?). While Browne was filming this story, she discovered that her cancer had come back. She finished filming before she went to a doctor. She lived for another seven years.
