Giancarlo Esposito has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe... but not as the character he's been campaigning to play over the past few months.
The actor has expressed interest in taking over from Sir Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy as the next big-screen incarnation of Professor Charles Xavier on several occasions, although he wasn't too keen on one particular aspect of the character.
"I've given it a cursory glance in my brain, and immediately I go 'Hmm,'" he said during a recent interview with Fade To Black . "'[It would] be great to play Professor X in some other incarnation than just the wheelchair. Right? Because the physical idea of being in a wheelchair every single day does not appeal to me. I just don't feel that old and I don’t like to sit that much. But certainly, we could figure something out maybe. Professor X wasn’t always in the...

Similar to many other Hollywood biggies, Chris Pine too comes from an acting background, whose parents were once associated with the showbiz. But while they did enjoy modest success, especially his dad, Robert Pine, it did little to change their life around financially, and the late ’80s would turn out to be the toughest period for the Pine family.
The Wonder Woman star, who has cemented himself as a major A-lister since rising to prominence in the late 2000s, recounted this dark period of his life, and how his parents combated the situation.

With the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ release, fans hope it will bring X-Men into the MCU. Though Professor X debuted in the MCU, fans await a version to stay and join various stories. Many actors are considered, with Giancarlo Esposito standing out. Esposito, known for villainous roles, expressed interest in the role during a Fade to Black podcast appearance. However, he dislikes a characteristic that defines the character.

With the upcoming release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ fans are hoping that the movie will open the floodgates of X-Men to the MCU. Although Professor X has already debuted in the MCU, fans are waiting for that variant that will stay and take part in several stories. Now there are many potential candidates for the role, and one name stands out Giancarlo Esposito, who we more frequently see in the role of a villain instead of in the role of a benevolent leader with humanity’s best interests at heart.
Esposito recently commented on the potential role during his guest appearance on the Fade To Black podcast and as it turns out he would love to play Charles Xavier but doesn’t like one aspect of the character that at the same time makes him extremely recognizable:

As we wait for Disney and Marvel to usher in a new era of X-Men-related film content, questions about who could play the iconic mutants continue to burn in fans’ minds. For several years, fan casts for the part of Wolverine have run rampant online, with everyone from Jared Kesso to Daniel Radcliffe and Taron Egerton floated as someone to play the adamantium-clawed Canadian hero. But what about Professor Charles Xavier? The mutant mentalist is one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. After Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy’s performances, playing the bald father figure to many mutants will take someone extraordinary. How about Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian, and Kaleidoscope actor Giancarlo Esposito?
Speaking with Amon Warmann from the Fade to Black podcast, Giancarlo Esposito says it’d be great to play Professor X in an X-Men project, though he’d like to change an aspect of the character’s mobility.

In the modern video game industry, almost every developer and publisher has their eyes on starting a franchise from day one of development. Features get cut that would fit better in a sequel. Plot points are set up for a future game. If you can franchise something, you can make a lot more money.
But sometimes, those plans don’t quite work out. A game sells well, a sequel gets greenlit, and for whatever reason, it barely makes a dent in the gaming consciousness, or maybe it never even makes its way to the West. Some of these sequels were stumbling blocks in bigger franchises, or offshoots that got stuck on platforms with small userbases. And a few seemed poised for bigger things but never quite caught on. Regardless of the how or why, these are some of the most notable video game sequels you probably forgot existed.

Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Gibson have announced the 1989 Les Paul Custom signature model.
It’s the latest signature model axe in Hammett’s ongoing partnership with Gibson. This time, they’re going back to the …And Justice for All and “Black Album” era for a faithful recreation of Hammett’s original Les Paul Custom in its appropriate “blacked-out” Ebony finish.
The signature model retains that look and was Murphy Lab-aged by Gibson’s luthiers to replicate the wear and feel of the original. The hardware is also all-black.
Per Kirk’s wishes, the guitar comes equipped with uncovered-Type pickups, along with a Fishman Powerbridge piezo bridge pickup system with a Fishman Powership preamp and volume control that boasts simulated full-bodied acoustic tone — the latter element being one of the original appeals of the instrument when Hammett first acquired it.

Filmmaker Wes Ball’s 2024 summer tentpole Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will try to conquer moviegoers two weeks early.
Disney’s 20th Century Studios announced Friday that the film will now open May 10 instead of May 24. The shift gives it distance from the crowded Memorial Day marquee, which includes George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Warner Bros.) and The Garfield Movie (Sony).
The move was a no-brainer since there is no direct competition on that date in terms of a new tentpole. Plus, it gives Planet of the Apes Imax screens for the first two weeks of its a release, as well as other large-format screens (it’s the first of the multitude of the Apes films to play in Imax.)
In its new date, the event pic will open opposite Focus Features’ Amy Winehouse film Fade to Black. And it bows once week after Universal’s The Fall Guy,...

Tens of thousands of music fans braved the desert heat for three days at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California to witness six of the biggest hard rock and metal bands of all time perform at the inaugural Power Trip festival. As previously reported, Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden kicked off the festival on Friday (October 6th), while AC/DC (playing their first show in seven years) and Judas Priest rocked the middle day on Saturday (October 7th).
Tool took the stage first on Sunday at Empire Polo Club, having previously played the first-ever Coachella festival there in 1999 and Coachella again in 2006.
Kicking things off with “Jambi” from 10,000 Days, Tool performed a career-spanning 12-song set that included songs from their debut full-length album, Undertow, through their latest effort, 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Of all their albums,...

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their 2023-2024 “M72 World Tour” on Friday (August 4th) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band was joined on the bill by fellow metal legends Pantera and rising rockers Mammoth Wvh (led by Wolfgang Van Halen).
The tour (get tickets here) features Metallica performing two completely unique sets (no repeat songs) over two nights in each city, with different support acts each evening. They’ll be right back at MetLife on Sunday (August 6th), with Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills opening.
The setup has the bands performing in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the stadium, with some fans in the “Snakepit” (the center of the circle).
While there was a forecast for thunderstorms on Friday night, that never came to be, making for a comfortable summer evening in New Jersey.

Metallica have unveiled the latest expression in their Blackened American Whiskey line, dubbed “Rye the Lightning.”
The new Kentucky straight rye whiskey is a play on words, inspired by Metallica’s sophomore album, Ride the Lightning. The new expression is finished in Madeira and rum casks, and undergoes the same “Black Noise” sonic-enhancement process (where the barrels are pummeled by low hertz frequencies of Metallica’s music) as...

The energy bouncing around San Francisco’s Chase Center for Metallica’s second 40th anniversary concert felt electric even before the band took the stage Sunday night. The first concert on Friday was all about anticipation — how could the thrash-metal pioneers commemorate their legacy in a fresh, exciting way? Well, that night they played a career-spanning set list in chronological order, blending big hits (“One,” “Nothing Else Matters”) with deep cuts (“Trapped Under Ice,” “Fixxxer”). Now that the group’s fans knew what to expect, Sunday night’s concert was all about catharsis.

On June 6th, 2004, mere hours before Metallica were due onstage to headline the Download Festival — the U.K.’s biggest metal event — medics rushed drummer Lars Ulrich to the hospital to treat a then-undisclosed illness. Rather than let down the estimated 70,000 fans in attendance, the band tapped some of their famous friends who had already played that day to fill in. Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo played the night’s first two songs, “Battery” and “The Four Horsemen,” while Slipknot’s Joey Jordison — dressed in his trademark mask and jumpsuit — played...

When James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich formed Metallica in 1981, they were a couple of pimply faced, adrenaline-starved teenage outcasts obsessed with the speed of Motörhead, weightiness of Black Sabbath, and intricate riffs of New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Diamond Head. They wanted their metal faster, tougher, and more intense than anything they had ever heard,...

Dennis Christopher, the wholesome small town bicyclist of Breaking Away, goes Psycho in this 1980 thriller about a film fan who acts out his murderous fantasies in the guise of classic movie monsters. If director Vernon Zimmerman had cult status in mind for this quirky black comedy, he was helped considerably by the film’s heavy rotation on Cinemax and HBO.

This article contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished up on Disney+ last week, leaving viewers with a few lingering questions – and a few key answers – about what Marvel has planned for some of its more grounded MCU projects in the future.
Now, showrunner Malcolm Spellman is in the spotlight for a round of interviews following confirmation that he’ll be developing a fourth Captain America movie for Marvel Studios, with the film likely to continue Sam Wilson’s story.
Spellman went over a number of interesting aspects of the series on the Fade to Black podcast, where interviewer Amon Warmann broached subjects that have been talked about in fan circles for quite a while, including a persistent rumor that a large chunk of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was rewritten to remove a pandemic-related storyline.

Oscar winner and multiple Emmy winner Cloris Leachman, best remembered as the delightfully neurotic Phyllis Lindstrom on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and her own subsequent sitcom, died of natural causes on Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 94.
“It’s been my privilege to work with Cloris Leachman, one of the most fearless actresses of our time,” her longtime manager Juliet Green said. “There was no one like Cloris. With a single look she had the ability to break your heart or make you laugh ’till the tears ran down your face. You never knew what Cloris was going to say or do and that unpredictable quality was part of her unparalleled magic.”
The daffy, self-absorbed Phyllis, a character she claimed was close to her own persona, brought the actress two Emmys as a featured actress in a series during the mid-’70s and made Leachman a household name.

Happy Monday, dear readers! We have one last group of horror and sci-fi home media releases arriving before we say goodbye to January, and I hope your wallets are prepared for just how many killer releases are heading home this weekend, because there’s a lot of great titles that are arriving this Tuesday.
In terms of new genre projects, Synchronic from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as well as Come Play are both headed to Blu-ray and DVD, and if the release of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer this weekend got you hyped for some kaiju action, Arrow Video is showing some love to Gamera this week with two different limited edition sets: Gamera: The Heisei Era and Gamera: The Showa Era. Happy Holiday Season, dear readers! Somehow, we’ve made it this far into 2020, which means we only have a handful of weeks left to this crummy year, which is something I think most of us are thankful for heading into the Thanksgiving holiday tomorrow. And because we are officially into the holiday season now, that means it’s also time to do some shopping, whether it’s gifts for yourself or for others. In any case, I’m someone who has always appreciated a good bargain and loves to save money wherever I can, and I think for most of us this year, we’re all looking to pinch those pennies wherever we can.
So, as usual, we’re kicking off Daily Dead’s 8th Annual Holiday Gift Guide with an initial batch of Black Friday sales that horror fans are going to want to check out over the next few days.

Fade To Black, released 40 years ago today, is a deliciously demented, and surprisingly tragic, slice of meta-cinema. The tale of a much-maligned matinee maniac gone sour, Fade To Black rides a riveting, tour de force star turn from Dennis Christopher into certifiable legend status. This criminally under-seen thriller received a chilly reception upon its initial release (its Rotten Tomatoes rating of 45% among critics is a tremendous injustice) and did not make much of an impact with domestic audiences, but it has garnered something of a cult appreciation in recent years. To wit, Trailers From Hell Guru Adam Rifkin, a man who knows his movies, cited it as one of his favorite movies about movies in an early episode of our podcast The Movies That Made Me.

Two of my all-time favourite horror films are Michele Soavi’s Stagefright (1987), which sees a group of stage actors locked in the theater for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production with a psychopathic killer; and Mark Herrier’s Popcorn (1991), which sees a murderer kill the attendees of a movie marathon in an old abandoned cinema. Why am I telling you this? Well Keola Racela’s Porno continues the same thematic tradition found in those films and other movies such as Fade to Black, Anguish and Demons, whilst also harkens back to that similar period in film history, setting this particular story in small-town America circa 1992…

Kenny Beats leans back and forth in a swivel chair, his movements matching the rhythm of his words, his face darting in and out of the conference room shadows. He’s describing L.A. rapper 03 Greedo’s last days of freedom before he turned himself in to serve 20 years in prison for drug and gun possession. It’s a subject he feels strongly about. Fifteen years ago, in the midst of a creative rut and middle-aged ambivalence, Jay-z made a great album. It was built on an idea never happened: Jay-z was supposed to retire after The Black Album and, spoiler alert, did not follow through on that. No one with a shred of common sense — his friends, collaborators, fans, Jay — believed him when he said it was his last album. But the hook worked. 15 years later, it still sounds like a farewell tour compressed into a single album. Fade To Black still feels like a victory lap.

"Rule 1: no one talks about swim club." IFC Films has debuted an official trailer for a British comedy titled Swimming With Men, a film directed by veteran English filmmaker Oliver Parker. The film is about a man suffering a crippling mid-life crisis who finds new meaning in his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronized swimming team. This is oddly the same setup as a French film titled Sink or Swim, pretty much the exact same thing but this one is British. The film stars Rob Brydon as Eric, with a full cast including Adeel Akhtar, Thomas Turgoose, Jim Carter, Daniel Mays, Rupert Graves, Charlotte Riley, Jane Horrocks, and Nathaniel Parker. This looks like the kind of comedy that only appeals to certain age groups with awkward humor. This isn't for me, but others might be into ...

Much like Aerosmith, our latest installment of “From Streams to Screams” is living on the edge. Terrible jokes aside, psychologically driven horror movies are a great way to push my buttons as a viewer, and I love immersing myself in all kinds of mind-bending genre stories that feature characters either being driven to the brink of insanity, or those who have embraced their darker impulses and choose to revel in their madness.

Veteran musical director Adam Blackstone is no stranger to awards recognition. The 36-year-old Trenton, New Jersey, native has earned a number of Grammy nominations as a songwriter, musical director or arranger with Pharrell Williams (“Happy [Live]”), Musiq Soulchild (“Teachme”) and Al Green with the Roots (“Lay It Down” album), and was recently the Music Director and bassist for “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack album as well as the Oscar telecast performance of its Best Song nominee “This is Me.”

Like most folk, I’m a sucker for alien invasion films; I’m also down with conspiracy flicks, and I love seeing beautiful photography in foreign lands. If only there was a horror film that combines these somewhat disparate elements into a cohesive, satisfying whole. I honestly can’t think of one; but there is Alien Predators (1985), a pretty damn fun and nonsensical trip through Spain.
Filmed in ’84 and released on video in the U.K. in August of ’85, Alien Predators saw a very brief theatrical U.S. run in February of ’87 before being dumped onto video shelves for curious horror fans…like myself; as that’s when I first saw it, and I remember digging its pleasant nature and sparse but effective effects. A recent revisit however disclosed its greatest asset: a make-it-up-as-we-go willingness on the part of writer/director Deran Sarafian (Terminal Velocity) that results in a freewheeling travelogue with Nasa espionage,...

Once upon a time, fluidly realistic character animation was a new thing in gaming. In 1989, Jordan Mechner’s Prince of Persia gave us a groundbreaking rotoscoped avatar. In 1991, French developer Delphine Software pushed the medium into cinematic territory with the brief but dazzling Another World. The following year, Delphine delivered their masterpiece: Flashback. But it needs to be seen in context – like many gaming greats, returning to it today reveals a flawed experience.
