With hindsight being 20/20 and all, it may be a shock to learn that when Jane Fonda and producing partner Bruce Gilbert wanted to make a workplace comedy about three secretaries who decide to enact revenge on their tyrannical, chauvinist boss called "9 to 5," few people (see: men) in positions of power thought the film would be a success. And yet, the film -- which got its name after a grassroots organization of women fighting for workplace equality and fair pay (that is still around today) -- was a box-office smash, launched the mainstream career of Dolly Parton outside of music, and inspired both a TV adaptation and a Broadway musical.
Featuring interviews with Parton, Fonda, Lily Tomlin, countless others who worked on the film, the TV adaptation (Rita Moreno!), the Broadway musical (Allison Janney!), and activists from then and now, the documentary "Still Working 9 to 5" currently boasts a 93% critical score.

Well, I know what song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day. First reported by The Insneider, Jennifer Aniston is producing a reimagining of 9 to 5 for 20th Century Studios. The iconic 1980 movie starred Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda as three women who join forces to take revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Of course, the movie also featured the iconic theme song written and performed by Parton, which became one of the biggest hits of the decade.
Jennifer Aniston will produce the 9 to 5 reimagining through her Echo Films banner, along with her partner Kristin Hahn. Lisa Frankenstein screenwriter Diablo Cody will pen the script for the project, and although plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s assumed it will more or less follow the beats of the original.

The 1980s hit comedy 9 To 5 is getting the remake treatment thanks to 20th Century Studios, with Jennifer Aniston currently set to produce the film.
It’s no way to make a livin’, but the 9 To 5 is something that most of us can relate to, not least because the phrase was immortalised in the 1980 office satire (not to mention Dolly Parton’s iconic title song) that starred Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman and Parton herself.

The film is currently in development, with Diablo Cody working on the latest draft of the “9 to 5” reimagining. Plot details are being kept under wraps.
The original “9 to 5” follows three female office colleagues who decide to exact revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Before I knew her as Archie Bunker's little girl Gloria on "All in the Family," I knew Sally Struthers as Rebecca Cunningham on "TaleSpin." A loving single mom and ambitious businesswoman whose outspoken personality belied her petite build, Rebecca -- aka "Becky," "Beckers," and the many other nicknames her responsibility-skirting, party-loving employee Baloo would use to refer to her -- was but one of many reasons to love the "Jungle Book"-inspired animated pulp period adventure series and Disney Afternoon staple. After years of trying (and failing) to keep the peace between her stubbornly conservative dad and her liberal, holier-than-thou husband Michael as Gloria in "All in the Family," Struthers was an expert in the art of sounding flustered, a talent that served her well on "TalepSpin."

Before "All in the Family" became one of the most groundbreaking sitcoms of all time, it was a non-starter with two failed pilot episodes and counting. The first, titled "Justice For All," was taped 3 years before the original show's run and featured a cast including Carol O'Conner and Jean Stapleton, who would go on to play married couple Archie and Edith Bunker in the final version of the show. The actors playing the Bunker family's daughter Edith and son-in-law Michael were different, though, played by Kelly Jean Peters ("Cagney & Lacey") and Tim McIntire ("Soap"), whose character was initially named Richard.
O'Conner explained in his memoir "I Think I'm Outta Here" that he largely rewrote the original pilot script himself, and the pilot was recorded in New York in October 1968. According to a Time Magazine 50th anniversary retrospective by Daniel S. Levy, network execs weren't pleased with the casting choices for...

The Golden Globes telecast is heading back to CBS for the first time in more than four decades. The ceremony is a TV staple, with viewers having come to expect a show that’s looser than the Academy Awards, thanks in part to plentiful alcohol. But the Globes, which debuted in 1944 and could be seen on NBC in the 1960s, went unaired throughout most of the 1970s due to (yup) scandals surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s voting process.
Its first CBS broadcast took place on Jan. 31, 1981, where the big winner was Ordinary People, the adaptation of Judith Guest’s 1976 novel about an affluent family devastated by loss. Produced by Ronald L. Some folks weren’t as thankful as they should’ve been for Dolly Parton’s halftime show during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game last week. But her younger sister Stella Parton came to her defense in a scathing tweet Sunday (November 26th), calling out those who weren’t pleased with our recent cover star rocking a cheerleader costume.
“I personally thought my big sister Dolly was cute as hell in her Dallas Cowboys cheerleading costume at the half time show on Thanksgiving,” Stella wrote. “To those of you being so critical of a 77 year old kicking up her heels, I say fuck yourself. Shame on you not her.”
In the middle of the Cowboys’ turkey game showdown against the Washington Commanders, Dolly sang classics like “Jolene” and “9 to 5” as well as covers of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You” in support of her new album Rockstar.

Dolly Parton turned heads on Thanksgiving when she performed an NFL halftime show during the Dallas Cowboys game against the Washington Commanders, but not everyone was complimentary. The multi-time Grammy winner took center stage dressed in Cowboys cheerleader gear, including a blue cropped top, white jean shorts, and her midriff on the show. She sang her hits “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” as well as a cover of Queen’s “We Are The Champions,” which features on her latest album, Rockstar. While millions loved the performance, including the crowd who went wild, others took to social media to criticize the country legend’s skimpy outfit. At 77 years young, Dolly Parton has earned the highest-charting album of her legendary career with Rockstar. The star-studded rock ‘n’ roll project debuted this week at No. 3.
Though she’s landed on the chart 49 times in the past — the first time being in 1969 — Rockstar marks Parton’s highest-charting album to date. She previously achieved two top 10 albums, with 2014’s Blue Smoke and 1987’s Trio (her collaborative LP with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris) both peaking at No. 6.
Rockstar was inspired by Parton’s 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and dropped on November 17th. With a tracklist of new originals and classic rock covers, the album features appearances by rock icons like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Ringo Starr, Miley Cyrus, Chris Stapleton, Debbie Harry, Nikki Sixx, Sting, Steve Perry, Steven Tyler, and many, many more. When you got it, you got it. And Dolly Parton still has it.
The country legend and reluctant recent Rock & Roll Hall of Famer performed today at halftime of the NFL game between the Washington Commanders and host Dallas Cowboys and brought the billion-dollar house down with a three-song, six-minute concert.
Riding her just-released rock double album Rockstar, the veteran singer-songwriter began with a pitch for the Salvation Army before playing two of her signature hits and a newly revamped Queen classic. Parton began with “Jolene,” her iconic plea to a man-stealing, auburn-haired vixen that features the signature line “please don’t take him just because you can.” It’s the track’s golden anniversary this month, having first hit the country chart in November 1973 before going to No. 1.

Dolly Parton’s promotional push behind her new album Rockstar has been as well-planned as a military operation. The country music superstar has been everywhere, from an hourlong interview on ABC earlier this month to the field at the University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium last weekend, where she sang the Volunteers’ rally song “Rocky Top.” On Thanksgiving Day, Parton continued her campaign, showing up in Arlington, Texas, to perform at AT&T Stadium during halftime of the Dallas Cowboys – Washington Commanders NFL game.
And, wow, did she make an entrance.

Dolly Parton is arguably the most beloved living American. How many people are alive today because Dolly told them to get the Covid vaccine back in early 2021? Of course, she’s a paragon of country music, but her reach goes far beyond Nashville, from the disco pop of her working-woman masterpiece “9 to 5” to the soft-rock bliss of her classic Kenny Rogers duet “Islands in the Stream.” And the crossover love has been reflected back; one of the most popular cover songs of all time is Whitney Houston’s...

Stop me before I pun again.
It’s a mantra that I dearly wish the creators of the third installment in the hugely successful animated Trolls series had taken to heart. Capitalizing on the fact that one of the film’s main voice stars, Justin Timberlake, was formerly a member of one of the biggest boy bands in pop history, Trolls Band Together is stuffed with so many groan-worthy punning jokes and one-liners referencing such bands from the ‘90s and other eras that you wonder whether the film was made for its target tyke audience or their parents. Many of the latter will at least enjoy the pop culture nostalgia while enduring the perfunctory storyline.
You have to admire Timberlake for being willing to make fun of his showbiz past. The plot involves the revelation that his character, Branch, was once the baby (literally) member of BroZone, a mega-successful boy band featuring his four brothers,...

This past summer, as Hollywood faced its second major strike, the president of actors union SAG-AFTRA took the podium. She was without makeup, she was raspy and she was pissed. Gone was the ozone-shattering hairspray and the wild prints plucked right from the zoo. Nowhere in earshot was the dog whistle voice and the dolphin laugh. This was Fran Drescher: not the street-smart bimbo of somehow successful sitcoms and expectedly by-the-numbers romances, but the woman who will do anything to show her loyalty and not back down from anything. She had done it throughout her career through battles with industry execs and cancer, and now she was doing it against some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
Wtf Happened to…Fran Drescher?

Dolly Parton, sitcom star? It almost happened in the 1990s. Nearly 30 years ago, the iconic singer/actor was set to star in a comedy series for CBS. But even though Parton taped six episodes of her show, titled Heavens to Betsy, they never made it to air.
Dolly Parton was set to star in a CBS sitcom
Parton rose to fame as a country singer. But by the 1980s she was making waves as an actor thanks to roles in movies such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias. Given her comedic chops, it’s not surprising that Parton considered making a move to TV.
In 1993, Touchstone Television announced that Parton would star in a CBS sitcom called Dixie’s Fixins’, about the romantic misadventures and mishaps of a cable cooking show host, the Washington Post reported. That show was scuttled before production began,...

If “Barbie” tells us anything, it’s that a movie doesn’t have to be gay to be, well, gay. So what makes a movie gay if it isn’t explicitly? Cast a few top-shelf gay icons in there — your Bette Middlers, your Joan Crawfords, your Faye Dunaways playing Joan Crawford — and especially have them reparteeing bitchy lines tearing each other to pieces, and have an aesthetic that’s outre and unironically camp, and you’ve got the winning-formula starter-pack for something deliciously fabulous and queer, even if not by intentional design.
Some films have gotten swept up into the queer canon by virtue of their unintentional awfulness or arguable quality while others actually push forward the cinematic medium to create something that stands the tests of time and the weathers of queer folks and their mercurial tastes. This year’s Emmy nominees will highlight a more diverse crop of actors, with Latino performers having a particularly strong showing.
Of course, much of that is thanks to Pedro Pascal, who has become the most-nominated Latino in a single year with three noms. He’s recognized for his work in “The Last of Us” as lead drama actor, “Saturday Night Live” as guest comedy actor and “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World” as the narrator. Pascal’s nomination for HBO’s dystopian video game adaptation makes him only the second Latino ever recognized in the drama category after Jimmy Smits’ four consecutive noms for “NYPD Blue” from 1996-1999. But there were some notable Latino stars who didn’t hear their names read — namely, Diego Luna, who was snubbed for Disney’s “Andor,” despite its best drama series nomination.

Country music stars Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs simultaneously hold the top two spots on the coveted Billboard Hot 100, marking the first time the genre has sat in those positions in a long time.
Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” continues atop the chart, with Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” coming in the number two slot. The chart measures song popularity based on radio airplay, radio airplay audience impressions, digital song sales, and streaming activity.
The last time two county stars were atop the Hot 100 was in 1981. In March of that year, Eddie Rabbitt’s “I Love a Rainy Night” and Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” held the top two spots.
For Wallen, topping the charts is becoming routine. His “Last Night” hitting No. 1 marks his 12th time in a row at No. 1. The song is part of his 2023 album One Thing at a Time.

In remarks to the crowd, captured on video by Deadline, Fonda also expressed support for the strike and essentially said she considered the cause of WGA and the actors’ guild, which is currently negotiating its own contract, to be the same.

The Writers Guild of America strike continued Thursday with a demonstration at Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles that featured appearances by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, as well as a slew of Dolly Parton drag queens on the picket lines.
The event, put on by the WGA’s LGBTQ+ writers committee, was titled “Striking 9-5 Picket — A Dolly Drag Event.” Fonda, Tomlin and the real-life Parton starred in the 1980 comedy that scored an Oscar nomination for Parton’s chart-topping title song. The picket was organized by the film’s screenwriter Patricia Resnick, who also attended and spoke to the crowd that swelled to more than 400.

In 1980, Dolly Parton was ruling the pop and country charts with “9 to 5” while Judas Priest were “Breaking the Law” and the members of Mötley Crüe weren’t even wearing leather. At that point in time, none of those artists likely ever thought they’d cross paths. Now, Parton has teamed with Priest screamer Rob Halford and Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist John 5 on a new song, “Bygones,” one of two new tracks Parton released from her upcoming Rockstar album, out Nov. 17.
