1979's 'Middle Age Spread' has been shown twice on British television ( as far as I know ). The second time it went out in a daytime slot with a fair amount of the content removed. It really neds to be seen more often as it is a witty and delightful look at adult relationships. The late Grant Tilly plays 'Colin Wilson', deputy principal at a New Zealand school. He is obsessed with physical fitness and goes jogging every day. He is married, but is not happily married. The headmaster is due to retire, and the job is up for grabs. Colin seems to be the obvious replacement. But then, he enters into an affair with a pretty young teacher named 'Judy' ( Donna Akersten ). So he faces a dilemma.

Based on a play, this benefits enormously from a strong cast. Tilly is brilliant as 'Colin' and so is Peter Sumner as his sarcastic best friend 'Reg'. A recognisable cast member is Bridget Armstrong, who appeared in British television and films, including 'The Amorous Prawn' and 'Live Now Pay Later'. The climax occurs at a party. Reg argues with Robert ( Judy's husband ) and blurts out that Colin has been having an affair with Judy. Life is never going to be the same again for anyone.

This is a difficult film to find but well worth tracking down.
