The film is based on the famous Hong Kong comic series 'Oriental Heroes' created by comic author Yuk Long Wong since the 1970s. The film marks one of the first on-screen comic book adaptation. It also marks Wong Yuk Long's only film directing role based on his own comic series.
The film was released as 'Hell's Wind Staff' in the United States and United Kingdom DVD and VHS.
Jeong-lee Hwang and Hoi Mang first on-screen collaboration. They later worked together in The Buddha Assassinator (1980). Hoi is also responsible for choreographing several of Hwang's picture off screen such as Ng See Yuen's The Ring of Death (1980) (1980), Corey Yuen's Ninja in the Dragon's Den (1982) (1982) and even Hwang's own directorial film Hitman in the Hand of Buddha (1981).
Wilson Yip later made a modern remake of the film under the name Dragon Tiger Gate (2006) in 2006, starring Nicholas Tse and Donnie Yen.
