When the Roger Corman-produced "Death Race 2000" was released in 1975, the film earned a poor critical reception. Major criticisms included a lack of depth in terms of its themes of anarchy and rebellion, with its campy entertainment factor not being enough to offset its overt sleaziness. However, just like every film that's gone on to attain cult status, "Death Race 2000" underwent critical reappraisal over the years and is now deemed a cult classic -- one whose indulgent and excessive violence has emerged as one of its strengths.
A sequel to "Death Race 2000," titled "Death Race 2050," wasn't made until 2017. However, there's more: Paul W. S. Anderson's 2008 reboot of Corman's original — the confusingly titled "Death Race" — is also meant to be a prequel. The film traces the crash of the U.S. economy and the rapid rise in crime rates, which birth the titular gladiator-style closed-track race...

Everyone loves fun car films. With Fast X spawning a spin-off and sequel and Gran Tusimo (out on VOD Tuesday) doing decent business at the box office, the genre isn’t going anywhere. We thought now would be a good time to check out some less-known (or underrated) entries into the genre.
Taxi
We’re going to cheat right off the start by counting this whole series and one entry on this list. The films here are action-comedy classics for fans of French movies and those who love a good car stunt. The first established the characters, but the second is possibly the best of the bunch. Only die-hard fans will want to bother from the third to the fourth to the fifth. However, those first two are worth seeking out what the French do with a modified Peugeot 406, the vacation town of Nice, and a cast that most will recognize from other movies.

The future is here and it’s out of control in the dazzling sci-fi thriller Override starring Luke Goss – released 6th September on DVD and Digital. To celebrate the new release, we are giving away a DVD!
The legendary Luke Goss (Hellboy 2) stars alongside Superman himself Dean Cain, and Jess Impiazzi in Override, a terrifically entertaining, smartly plotted mix of Ex Machina and I, Robot, about a futuristic reality show using an alluring female android that goes badly wrong.
Stylishly filmed, with sleek effects and a pulsing soundtrack, and a terrific performance from Impiazzi as a seriously sultry ‘perfect wife’ – the ‘Reality Interface Android’ (R.I.A) who goes off the rails, the film wouldn’t look out of place as a slick and sexy feature-length Black Mirror episode.
As well as pop-idol-turned-prolific-action-star Goss, the film also features much-loved 80s pop star Sinitta and Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt; as well Charlie Clapham,...

When it comes to the terms "living legend" and "prolific," perhaps nobody deserves those titles more than Roger Corman, who through hundreds of films has inspired and provided countless filmmakers and actors with opportunities to break into the movie industry. In the late 1970s, Roger Corman was looking to produce a high school-themed movie. Knowing that one of his young directing proteges had a bent for music, the head of New World Pictures had an idea. As Allan Arkush remembers Corman telling him: “I’ve been thinking, since ‘Grease’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’ are hits, why don’t you put music in it and we’ll call it ‘Disco High’?”
Fortunately, as “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” took shape, cooler heads prevailed … and nothing could be cooler than the Ramones, then, in 1979, or now, even after most of the band members have passed on. It was 40 years ago this week that the film had its New York City opening, which was part of a very, very staggered release pattern for a low-budget project that came to stand in the upper ranks of almost everyone’s list of essential music movies.

These days, cinema buffs searching high and low for a lost, early work of a modern filmmaker is almost unheard of , as most everything is readily available on DVD or Blu-ray. However, back in the day, this was far from the case. Way back when, many early efforts from then current directorial masters were extremely hard to find. For example, throughout the 1980s, I can remember looking everywhere for a copy of George A. Romero’s third film Season of the Witch aka Hungry Wives (1972) as well as Martin Scorsese’s debut feature Who’s That Knocking at My Door? (1967) just to name a few. Another movie I always longed to see was a strange, little action film called Fast Company. The reason I use the word strange is because the movie was directed by the enormously talented, Canadian born David Cronenberg. Although he is now known...

What an amazing week for TV fans. As if you didn’t have enough stacking to do with the new, brilliant season of “House of Cards” on Netflix, there are four other full seasons in this week’s What to Watch that you really should watch front to back. And then there’s the still-amazing “Darkman,” a cult classic that perfectly captures Sam Raimi’s skill at controlled chaos. Finally, we have two ’80s horror flicks in one set in “Bad Dreams” and “Visiting Hours.” Check ‘em all out (Ok, you can skip the genre stinkers).

*Updated* Back in 2011, Shout! Factory released 80′s horror cult movies, Bad Dreams and Visiting Hours, in a 2-disc DVD set. Thanks to Scream Factory’s recent success, both titles will be getting a Blu-ray upgrade next year:
via Scream Factory: “Some of you may be aware that Shout Factory released this double feature already on DVD only in 2011 as a “Killer Double Feature”. All the extras from that release will be ported over including new extras that are in the works for Visiting Hours (which had only TV spots and a still gallery at the time.). No firm details to report on them at this time. Artwork is not final but expect it to look close to what’s presented here.”

His scarred countenance was the result of setting himself on fire during a late ’60s acid trip, but that disfigured look led to a ton of villain roles in a career that spanned four decades and over 100 films. I first took notice of Richard Lynch in the 1972 film Scarecrow when he played a scary prisoner who rapes Al Pacino. It was his first film and after that he almost always played bad guys in movies such as The Seven-ups, Open Season, God Told Me To, Deathsport, and The Ninth Configuration. He battled Chuck Norris as the head baddie in Invasion USA and attempted his own Freddy Kruger spin-off in 1988 starring in Bad Dreams. His performance as the evil “King Cromwell” in the hit fantasy film The Sword And The Sorceror won Lynch the Saturn Award for Best Actor from the Academy of Science Fiction and Fantasy in 1982. In 2007 he was...

Around here at Dread Central we love us some Shout! Factory. These cats have continuously been one of the go-to sources for Eighties classics long thought to be lost. Case in point: the double-feature DVD release of Bad Dreams and Visiting Hours. Oh, how we love you.

Bad Dreams
In the mid-1970s the members of the love cult Unity Fields sought “the ultimate joining” by dousing themselves with gasoline and committing mass suicide. A young girl blown clear of the fiery explosion was the only survivor. Thirteen years later, Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin, Screamers) awakens from a coma inside a psychiatric hospital with only buried memories of that horrific day — but now her fellow patients are each being driven to their own violent suicides. Has the sect’s leader (Richard Lynch, Deathsport) returned to claim his final child?...

Last year you may remember hearing about a project called Deathsport (not related to the David Carradine classic), set to star Kellan Lutz as some "modern gladiator" and Samuel L. Jackson as the evil overlord making sure the battles are broadcast "for the entertainment of the online masses." Well it's finally here, thanks to YouTube (via Movieline) we have the first trailer for Arena, the new title for a film that might as well already be called one of the worst of the year. Remember how much you laughed watching Sam Jackson in Frank Miller's The Spirit? This is even worse. I suggest staying away, but you might have fun watching it. Watch the first official trailer for Jonah Loop's Arena, embedded via Apple: "There's no greater battle than the fight for your life." David Lord (Kellan Lutz) is forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena,...

With the words “Action Packed” adorning the upper portion of the latest release from Shout! Factory and their long running series of genre films from the iconic B-movie God himself, Roger Corman, the latest Corman Cult Classics set is quite an interesting one.

Georgia Peaches, The Great Texas Dynamite Chase and Smokey Bites The Dust all get their day in the sun here. And while this release itself may not be the strongest features wise, these are three of the more interesting releases to see the light of day thanks to Shout! Factory.

The Film:
Let’s race.
I doubt if in 1975 that Roger Corman knew he would have a franchise on his hands. While technically Death Race is not really on his hands anymore, it’s a franchise now, thanks to Death Race 2 and all because of Frankenstein. The original Death Race 2000 featured Sly Stallone and David Carradine (as Frankenstein) in what would become a cult hit, and throughout the years would seemingly be ready for remake land with today’s effects and budgets, and that’s exactly what Paul W.S. Anderson did in 2008. Now, much like the corporate greed depicted in the films, a calling for a new film from Universal Studios – a prequel to the remake which was meant to be a homage/prequel in itself (you get this?) – comes with engines roaring.
Luckily for Frankenstein and on-lookers, Death Race 2 doesn’t crash and burn, but instead...

The Films:
Shout! Factory continues their fun line of double-bills with more Roger Corman produced B-movie goodness. If it wasn’t for the successful Death Race 2000 (here) these films wouldn’t exist, mainly because Corman was the type of producer, and in some ways still is, that would take an idea that made money – whether from others or his – and spun it a few different ways to make like-minded films. Hence, Deathsport (1978) and Battle Truck (1982) take a few notes from the previously mentioned Death Race 2000, but add a little Mad Max in for good measure, and the end results are pleasing, even you don’t mind some aimless cheese.
Deathsport is all over the place. Too many ideas, no real focus, but it manages to be a blast in its 90 minutes, because of those reasons. A thousand years into the future – it gets better – a dying bureaucrat seeks out the have nots,...

Wakefield, Nc - Deep in the woods of Raleigh, I felt the ghost of Glenn Gould. He’s been dead since 1982, but there he was at a grand piano playing the first of Bach’s The Goldberg Variations.
His body wasn’t hunched over the keyboard on his collapsible chair. He wasn’t humming away as he played. But it was unmistakably Gould. The keys of the Yamaha Dcfiiiapro were stuck in his iconic way. His music filled the classical music concert hall covered in maple and cherry wood.
How can this be? Who conjured the Canadian classical music genius? Zenph Sound Innovations figured a way to make dead fingers play. This isn’t merely a piano roll, fake stereo treatment or a new noise reduction that goes beyond Dolby.
There is no other way to describe the technological miracle except in spiritual terms. This is the closest we’ll...

This morning I figured it was time to bust out with some cult Pa news and since I just caught up with this newly released Roger Corman double-header disc featuring two old school Pa cheese fests and it turned out to be a blast-and-a-half to watch I figured I'd plug it.
What can we say about Deathsport. The worldwide success of Death Race 2000 fueled Corman’s desire to make Deathsport, which also stars David Carradine. It was not a direct sequel and not nearly as well conceived, but it's enough of a thematic follow-up. There's lots of motorcycle mayham and awesome scifi matte paintings that look totally fake, but I personally love that stuff.
Set 1,000 years in the future, following the Great Neutron Wars, Deathsport shows a world that is divided into desert wastes and isolated city-states. Lord Zirpola (David McLean, Kingdom of the Spiders) captures the notorious “Desert...

When deciding on a movie to watch, you are hard pressed to go wrong when picking a film adorned with the title of “Roger Corman Cult Classics” right at the top of the case.
The genuine geniuses over at Shout! Factory have been slowly but surely knocking it out of the ballpark with each subsequent release of this massively expansive set, detailing cult classics like Death Race 2000, and rarely seen gems like Galaxy Of Terror.
The series has produced DVDs that not only have fantastic transfers, but also rather expansive special features, ranging from hour long documentaries, to interviews with Corman himself.
However, Shout! Factory may have finally hit a little bump in the road.
The newest release in the ongoing series, a special double feature featuring the sci-fi films Deathsport and Battle Truck (a.k.a. the best title in film history), aren’t truly bad releases. That said,...

This weekend the Syfy channel aired the latest Roger Corman creation, Dinocroc vs Supergator. The movie was the inevitable combination of Dinocroc and Supergator, the two past films made by the legendary producer for the network. Corman, often called the King of the B-movies, is best known his low budget sci-fi flicks, but he also has had mainstream success with his Edgar Allen Poe movies, including The Fall of the House of Usher and The Raven, and cult classics like Death Race 2000, Children of the Corn, and Rock and Rock High School.
With an astounding 550 films under his belt it's no wonder the Academy honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2009. But his one work is just part of the story. Throughout the course of his 50-year career, Corman has launched the careers of many of today's Hollywood elite.

Next month, the geek world will converge on San Diego, California, it it’s yearly celebration of the popular arts, in the form of Comic Con International. This will be my 18th year attending the festival, although my first as a member of the “press.” I use that term lightly as I consider us here at the Criterion Cast, more like passionate amateurs (a term recently popularized by Michael Chabon), than actual film journalists. We certainly take everything we do here seriously, as evidenced by our commitment over the past year to producing multiple weekly podcasts, attending film screenings, and over the past six months, we’ve covered various film festivals (Sundance, SXSW, and Tribeca) to bring our unique cineaste perspectives towards the upcoming crop of films and filmmakers.

Another pair of offerings from In2Film’s Roger Corman Collection and this time we venture forward into the 70’s, to two movies that span the spectrum of Corman’s career as a film producer. From the good: Grand Theft Auto, which marked the directorial debut of Happy Days actor Ron Howard; to the not so good: Deathsport.
Grand Theft Auto
Stars: Ron Howard, Nancy Morgan, Elizabeth Rogers, Barry Cahill, Rance Howard, Paul Linke, Marion Ross | Written and Directed by Ron Howard
This amiable screwball comedy is part road movie, part chase movie and part destruction derby, and concerns one young man’s elopement with his heiress girlfriend from La to Vegas while her father, her fiancé and various others are in hot pursuit hoping to prevent the forthcoming nuptials. However, the car crashes are the real stars of a film that marked the directorial debut of one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers.

With Piranha and Humanoids from the Deep getting all the love lately in the news, we'd be remiss if we did not mention two other Corman cult classics that are poised to make their special edition double-feature DVD debut from Shout! Factory.
From the Press Release:
Brace yourself for twice the fun, twice the adrenaline rush, and twice the traction as Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation, is set to release a dynamic duo of Roger Corman classics on one double-feature collector’s edition DVD. August 3, 2010, will see the release of Deathsport/Battle Truck Collector’s Edition, which marks the first time Deathsport is being presented in a widescreen format as well as the first-ever DVD release of Battle Truck (released theatrically as Warlords of the 21st Century). This double-barreled dose of high-octane excitement decisively marks the latest summer installment from fan favorite Roger Corman’s Cult Classics home entertainment series.

'It's a name that's not gonna last,' Jackson says of gladiator flick with Kellan Lutz.

Beverly Hills, California — Hollywood can be a crazy town sometimes, filled with random coincidences. To the outside world, many repeated themes and similarly named projects look like they're the work of copycats. But sometimes it's just bizarre happenstance, as in the case involving Samuel L. Jackson, a "Twilight" star and certain a Marvel comics character.
"I'm actually shooting a thing that's called — well, right now it's called 'Death Sport,' but I think they're going to change the name of it," Sam Jackson recently explained to MTV News, referring to an action film with "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz.
But wait a minute — isn't that movie called "Deathgames"?
" 'Deathgames,' yeah," Jackson laughed. " 'Deathgames,' 'Death Sport,' — it's a name that's not gonna last.

Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

It should come as no surprise to learn that there will be a new DVD of the original Piranha to go along with this summer's 3-D remake; that sort of release is nothing new, especially if you're a horror fan. But what is particularly exciting, provided you're a fan of horror, schlock, and/or Roger Corman in general, is this: In just a few months the fine folks at Shout! Factory will be unleashing all sorts of Cormanized craziness.
In April we'll get a long-awaited re-issue of Joe Dante's Piranha, which is arguably one of Corman's finest productions -- even if it is a thinly-veiled Jaws wannabe. Your choice of standard special edition or blu-ray. Yes, that's right: Piranha on blu-ray. Pinch me. But don't pinch yet. It gets better: In the following weeks Shout! Factory will also dole out Humanoids from the Deep (yes!), the beloved Death Race 2000 and its follow-up Deathsport,...
