Odd

Rarely does such a movie make it to video that is so weird, purposeful, yet artistic. I bought it b/c it was $4.00 in the discount rack. I don't regret it, yet if I had 2 movies such as this, it would be a waste.

A waste!

I rented this video (as Toga Party) expecting some great stuff (it was Rated R, after all) but what I saw was the lamest piece of 85 minutes ever. It has all the filmmaking craft of a bad late 70's blue movie. Filled with unlikable (and ugly) actors especially the lead actor, obviously a John Travolta wannabe. The basic 'plot' of this film has the the lead character moving to New York to star a singing career. There's some 'comedy' sex scenes (by speeding up the film and inserting comedy music) and a 'comedy' robbery scene but it's a waste of time.

"Purvis Hinkledink" (Luther Whaney) is a country boy who wants to go to the big city and play music. So he leaves his girlfriend "Betty-Lou" (Mary Mitchell) and hitchhikes to New York. After getting thrown out of several bars for singing the same perverted song he finally meets up with a talent agent by the name of "Suzie Starmonger" (Cindy Tree) who uses her female wiles to land a contract with a music producer named "Snake" (Bobby Astyr). What follows are some really weird songs which land him fame and notoriety. But he soon finds out that fame has its price. Anyway, rather than detail any more of the story and risk ruining the film for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this has to be one of the most idiotic movies I have ever seen. While I can't deny that there were some funny parts-such as the song "Nazi Lady"-the majority of the movie was just plain stupid and vulgar. There's no other way to describe it. Definitely below average.

Purvis is the Man

Warning: Spoilers
You have to take this movie for what it is. It is one of the most funny movies ever. There is some down time but you have to hang with it.

When I was in junior high i went up town and grabbed it not knowing what it actually was. Had a couple buddies over and i consider it a cult classic movie.

The way the movie progresses into the move to the big city is way to cool. Wacky stuff way off the wall. Then you get the flash back to the smokers party every once in awhile. My favorite is the blind guy who is not really blind and still tries to get a job at the club.

Even tracked this VHS gem down on EBAY for 20 bucks..... Sweet.

Talk About A Weird Idea For A Movie...
MovieMan-11226 August 1999
This is a hard movie to review. What other movie has a group of friends in their early 20's gather together for the weekend, take off all of their clothes, and dance naked all day and night? I don't know of any other but this one. "Pelvis" was fun to watch and yet, at the same time, pointless. The movie never goes anywhere (it takes place inside the beach house the whole time) and never leads to anything exciting. I doubt it's supposed to but I don't care. It was still a good movie. The jokes were funny and the dialogue was plain and simple but the dance numbers were fun to watch because the camera shots of the totally naked dancers were confusing and graphic. Funny but weird.
