A rather sad and pathetic film...I felt a bit dirty watching it...
planktonrules5 September 2009
I watched this film because I am, at times, a film masochist. While I love classic Hollywood films, independent films and foreign cinema, I also have a soft place in my heart for the truly horrible films. I particularly love the worst schlock from the 1950s and 60s. And, considering that Larry Buchanan is one of the absolute worst directors of this era, GOODBYE, NORMA JEAN was a must-see.

The first thing I noticed is that the film maker really intended this as a "skin flick" by inserting needless nudity. Facts and getting the story straight were NOT high priorities. I especially like how they didn't even try to make Misty Rowe look that much like Marilyn. Before being discovered by Hollywood, Marilyn didn't have bleached blonde hair, as anyone vaguely acquainted with Marilyn's life would have known--but I guess wigs or hair dye were just too expensive for this film! The next thing I noticed is that this really wasn't a biography but instead was more like a series of sexually explicit episodes (a lotta rapes in particular) and beatings that were linked together by the theme of Marilyn Monroe--like it was inspired by her life only! In other words, it was pure exploitation. Instead of being titillating, however, it all came off as gross. Sure, Ms. Rowe was a sexy dish, but seeing her supposedly raped again and again is definitely NOT a turn-on for normal folks!! In fact, I sure worry about anyone who LIKES watching these terrible scenes. I really think if they had perhaps kept the nudity but not have it be in the forms of violent rapes it wouldn't offend most viewers.

Another really bad aspect of the film is the dialog. Again and again, Ms. Rowe goes off on the most ridiculous little speeches that don't sound the least bit like the way real people talk. In particular, the casting couch speech was laughable but examples of insipid drivel for dialog abound. Another great bit of dialog is the scene where Marilyn's mother appears in a dream wearing a straight-jacket and talks on and on about how hard life is! Ugghh!

Overall, there isn't really anything good about the film, though the production values are a lot better than Larry Buchanan's other films--which still isn't saying very much! Also, if you are looking for anything on the later life of Marilyn, this film isn't it as it focuses on the early career only. In 1989, Buchanan created GOODNIGHT, SWEET MARILYN that supposedly deals with Marilyn's last days. If it's as close to the facts as this film, expect to possibly see space aliens and a visit from Pope Innocent III in the movie! GOODBYE, NORMA JEAN is a rather sad and pathetic excuse for a film. The only reason it gets a 2 is that at least for Larry Buchanan it's got reasonably decent production values.

Written, directed, produced and edited by the great auteur, it is a soul-less and evil little movie.

Awful

Warning: Spoilers
This cheap and tawdry disaster of a movie appears to be the re-telling of the Marilyn Monroe story in some kind of parallel universe. A universe where documented facts don't matter, and where the fashions, music and sensibilities of the1970s were somehow alive and well 30 years too early, as Marilyn grew from abused teenage orphan to casting-couch victim, to Hollywood star. Along the way she is raped by multiple men (and a woman), gets mixed up in the porn and snuff movie business, slashes her wrists, shacks up with some Hugh Hefner producer type, speaks to people with the filthiest mouth imaginable, and ends the movie with the immortal line "That's the last cock I'll ever have to suck!". Hooray for Hollywood.

Apart from all the misery and abuse, the film seems to suggest that the transformation from Norma Jean into the blonde bombshell Marilyn is very sudden - just the addition of a new hairdo and a figure hugging silver dress seem to do the trick, and the story ends soon afterwards.

Poor Misty Rowe does her best, and I really mean that. Although she gives it a go, she plays the part with the dumb blonde act and constant kittenish whisper right from the start, which I don't think is how Monroe acted off camera, and I think this was pretty ill advised. The script is the reason she comes across so poorly, it's diabolical. The rest of the cast is a lot worse, and the attention to period detail is all but absent. The movie's lighting, sound and general quality are all rock bottom, and there's really nothing here for anyone to enjoy

Horrible trash, One of the worst films ever.
LeroyBrown-227 February 2008
I remember Playboy magazine had a spread with Misty Rowe when this film was made. She recreated Marilyn Monroe's poses for the magazine and I wanted to see the movie because of it. I finally saw it on video. I wish I never did, it ranks as one of the worst films I ever saw. I mean total trash, no wonder it never got theatrical release.

The movie is a retelling of Marilyn Monroe's life, I think it may have been adapted from one of the books that Robert Slatzer's (SLEAZER) published about Miss Monroe. You know him, he's the guy who claimed to have been Marilyn's confidant and husband for about a weekend. All his claims were never proved as a matter of fact his marriage claim was totally disproven when a check dated at the same time of their wedding and signed by Miss Monroe proved that she was in Los Angeles at the time. Even if it weren't based on Slatzer's (SLEAZER) writing it's just plain garbage.

Source material aside it was the whole film was a mess. The editing looked jumpy, the acting terrible, the dialogue lame and it sounds as if everything the actors said reverberated on the wall. The film looked like it was shot with the wost film stock they can find. I think it may have been shot in 8MM, I mean it looked horrible. As for the casting, they casts "Hee Haw" Honey Misty Rowe as Marilyn. I mean I always thought Miss Rowe was a total babe but come on she absolutely look nothing like Marilyn Monroe. Then again Poppy Montgomery, Mira Sorvino, Asley Judd all played Marilyn and they look nothing like her. At least they can act.

Two things that really stuck in my mind is the theme song, a soft rock/folk rock tune that went "Norma Jean wants to be a movie queen" and the other thing is when she finally gets her big break she utters the immortal words "I never have to perform fellatio again", except in a more graphic term.

Tedious trash; painful to watch
pery-127 February 2004
The Intro. reads "not as others told it; not as she told it; but as it really was". WRONG! It doesn't even get her early hair color right.

It depicts Marilyn as a complete naive airhead, who did not enjoy sex, and whose life (other than her eventual success in movies) was one of neverending abuse. She is depicted as really the same as the studio-pushed persona she later often had to use - a dumb blonde with that airhead voice. There is something of the Cinderella story here, as her early life was rough. The real basis of the film is the "revenge" theme. There is quite a man-hating aspect to it. It is not graphic, but the heroine endures repeated abuse, including rapes, forced lesbian sex and oral sex (in this movie it might be called "the casting floor"), but gets her revenge by eventually becoming a success as Marilyn. Some poor films and most soaps are watchable because of an attractive cast; this one lacks even that, other than Preston Hanson and Patch Mackenzie.

Absolutely the worst movie every made. Period.
beyondwords3 August 2007
I remember bullying my then-boyfriend (now husband, in spite of my demonstrably bad taste in movies by wanting to even SEE this) to go see this in '76 when it first came out. He fought it, but being a guy, he finally agreed to humor me. About ten minutes into the movie, people started leaving -- it was THAT bad. I turned to him and said, "OK, you win. It stinks. Let's go." My punishment? We couldn't go -- we had to sit there and watch the WHOLE THING. Omigod, it must have been filmed by a blind man and edited a drunk and on crack. It was just an exploitively poor excuse for soft porn that happened to tack Marilyn Monroe's name on it. If I were her, I'd sue from the grave! When the final credits started to roll, he turned to me and said, "I'm sorry -- it was so bad that NO ONE should have had to sit through that." We still laugh about it, 30 years later, but it's definitely the top of the list as far as bad movies go!

I DISAGREE
tom-8619 February 2001
I disagree strongly with the above review. Sure, this basically a 70's exploitation flick with nudity but I think that GOODBYE NORMA JEAN is an underrated film that holds up quite well and is a better movie than the similar one made for HBO a few years ago with Ashley Judd and Mia Sorvino sharing the title role. Misty Rowe is very good in the title role and the movie is surprising in it's accuracy, not glossing over some of the more sordid details of Ms Monroe's life. Well worth seeking out..

DISGUSTING TRASH
derek-236 May 1999
This exploitive piece of garbage has the look of either a bad T.V movie or a porn flick. Misty Rowe (the name sounds like a stripper) portrays Norma Jean as an idiot bordering on mental retardation. The script is terrible. The acting sucks. Marilyn Monroe would roll over in her grave if she ever saw this movie.

this is the worst movie i have ever seen.
flowerchild50005 August 2002
this is the worst movie i have ever seen. yes, i know that marilyn was raped but they make it so rediculous, like with a woman. i really dont think she would stoop so low.i have read up on her very much and there was no mention of that many rapes, or that close together. it seemed like everyday she got raped at least once. it is just heartbreaking to see a movie like that saying this is how it happened and it is the worst movie ever made

AWFUL TRASHY DON'T WATCH IT.
superstar365420044 November 2004
I made the mistake of watching this and buying it. I have a lot of stuff to say to make this movie seem like junk and it is.

Marilyn was never forced to have sexual relations with any of her casting directors. The studio names were messed up, the modeling agency she was at was not named the same. It's full of nudity and Marilyn didn't do anything like that until Somethings Got To Give and the famous Playboy issue. She wasn't raped by a police man. All the none sense about the "Whamo ammo" girl trash is all false. The names are wrong, except for Norma Jean Baker, that seems to be the only thing Larry Buchanan could spell.

I hated this movie and if anyone wants to disagree with me and say its good then they're wrong and wasting their time.

I'd give it 1/2 out of 4 stars.

Degrading, False, garbage..
emhughley8 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
By all means avoid this film... I see its being sold on Ebay for a staggering $56.00. The back of the DVD states that it is a "absolutely dazzling movie".... Out of complete respect for its subject, don't waste your hard earned money on this garbage. I agree with every bad review for this film, it is at the bottom of the barrel in film making. When released in my home town way back in 1976 it was playing at the local Drive In with the catch phrase "This is how it really was". It angers me that this film is a complete disrespect to a human being who was so far above the bile that this film perpetrates. We all know what a casting couch is. Norma Jean did participate in order to further her career but 75 minutes of rape, abuse and continuous degradation was how it really was?.... Are you kidding me? Its completely negligent to suggest that M. Monroe was only born to suffer or be humiliated because she was beautiful, as this film suggests.

First thing first. I understand what low budget means. But some simple, accurate research into the life of its title character by its makers might have resulted in something that could have been watchable. Look at todays Indie Films like "Precious" They are made on the cheap but they tell a story that enthralls us and have actors who make us care: "Goodbye Norma Jean" presents disgusting false plot lines that are not in the least bit sexy. The movie in all its grainy, jumpy, 70"s feel ups the ante for the ICK factor. The script, production values, sets and costumes are all horrible. There is not one attempt at recreating M. Monroes iconic clothing that anybody would recognize. Misty Rowe's wig alone is completely ridiculous. The rest of the cast are extremely bad actors who are written as inhuman. They collaborate eagerly with each other to abuse and victimize Norma Jean at every turn. The set walls wobble back and forth when doors are opened or closed in scenes. The lighting is either glaring, shadowy or non existent. I don't have one positive reason to view this appalling film.

I will also note that this film can and will never fit into the realm of a camp classic. Most camp classic films starts out with good intentions, keep you interested, and allow you to laugh at it while appreciating the overall badness of it all. This film had NO good intentions from the beginning. It was produced to exploit Monroes reputation, in the hopes of making a quick buck at the expense of its sensitive, and better deserving subject. The telefilms "Marilyn, The Untold Story" with Catherine Hicks or "Blonde" with Poppy Mongomery are far superior at explaining the myth behind the legend. Or do yourself a favor and watch a film from Marilyn's own library of classics. "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" "7 Year Itch", "Bus Stop", or "The Misfits" would be a good place to start.

Play Misty for me
hockeynut1629 June 2017
I have just got to try and help this films bad numbers so I am going to give Goodbye Norma Jean a seven. Misty Rowe is a super cute girl and even though she admittedly looks nothing like Marilyn Monroe she has that fabulous beautiful look that makes Norma Jean Baker a believable future superstar. And I'm a sucker for trashy '70s films

You did know there was a sequel, right?
judex-119 September 2003
Rather surprised not to see "Goodnight, Sweet Marilyn" listed as a Larry Buchanan movie, or mentioned here. "GSM" is the sequel Buchanan mainly edited together in 1989. Two actresses are credited for the title role, Misty Rowe as "Norma Jean Baker", and Paula Lane as "Marilyn Munroe". The big problem is that all Misty's scenes are from the first film, (I vaguely recall some possible redubbing of scenes, but it has been years), and there isn't a whole lot of credible resemblance between the actresses. While "Goodbye, Norma Jean" showed a bit of flair, reminiscent of Buchanan's "Art" film, "Strawberries Need Rain", I'm afraid that this overblown cut-and-paste job, is definitely the work of the man who gave us "Zontar, The Thing From Venus". It kind of started the whole trend of "sequels that use as little new footage as possible", later a hallmark of the dreadful "Silent Night, Deadly Night" series. Over half of "Goodbye, Norma Jean" gets repeated here, and not even the filmstocks match. As often happens with his work, Buchanan was both ahead, and behind, the times simultaneously.

Nothing positive to say
WhackJob21 August 2017
I found a VHS copy for sale at a garage sale, I bought it because it had MIsty Rowe, whom I had a crush on since I was a kid. Anyway it was another film about Marilyn Monroe, and it is horrible. The acting was awful, I know Misty Rowe was not Meryl Streep but her acting was without doubt incredibly awful and everybody was just as bad. The story was predictable and even comical. What's even more comical is the dialogue. It's as if it was the first draft written on bar napkins. The production value of the film is similar to those crappy porn films from the '70s.

Enjoyable !!

I liked this when I saw it in the cinema thinking it accurately portrayed her early career but I was 22 at the time and perhaps the acting, plot and historical accuracy weren't uppermost attributes of my critical reasoning.

wrong on so many levels
ptquilts6 September 2011
This movie is wrong in so many ways - MM did not start out as a blonde, as others have noted.

The only concession the producers made to period authenticity was the cars. No one has authentic 1940's hairdos or makeup. Check out the scene where everyone is leaving the screening room - they all look like they are in the 1970's which is when the movie was made. The main character's wig is a mess and looks like it has never been brushed.

And one character describes a "snuff" film as one where two women kill a guy - not what I usually hear a "snuff" film consists of.

The whole film is painful to watch as the production values are just terrible. Looks like the budget was about $500.

Waste Of Film
myspecialparadise29 February 2012
The only thing this film got right was the fact that Norma Jeane disliked sex, a problem that most people who were molested and/or raped in childhood have in common. Although, such things can be overcome for short periods of time ... the person tends to slip back into their norm.

Misty Rowe ... what can I say about her performance that would not be cruel? Can't! Anyone taking on this role, as written in the script, had to be 100% STOOPID! The script turned Marilyn into a vulgar brainless twit, and no real fan of this Iconic Star would have accepted this role, as written! It amazes me that this trash is out on DVD, while Catherine Hicks' "Marilyn: The Untold Story" has never been released on DVD. The latter being thee best film on Marilyn ever created .... SO FAR! A Marilyn Monroe look-alike
oscar-3520 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoiler/plot- 1976, A young orphan girl lives through the seedier part of being a starlet in Hollywood and accomplishes her goal with being an icon of the times.

*Special Stars- Misty Rowe, James Bacon

*Theme- Marilyn Monroe had it hard becoming a new movie star.

*Trivia/location/goofs- Rated 'R' for female frontal nudity and sexual situations. A Marilyn Monroe look-alike was to star in this film but director relented and got a bad actress. Look for Hollywood columnists, James Bacon to appear in a cameo appearance as a beauty contest judge. "Boom microphone" makes an appearance in some of the indoor shots at the top of the film frame. Nice use of historic places, clothes, and cars in this film.

*Emotion- A rather crazy bio film about a very young starlet seeking her stardom in the competitive and harsh Hollywood era of the 50's. A somewhat forgettable film about a 'sexbomb'.
