- The Middle Ages. Much to his surprise, Peewit, a mischievous court jester and not-so-talented musician, stumbles upon an unusual flute with only six holes. But, before long, Peewit realises the musical instrument has powers beyond imagination: when played, people dance to exhaustion. Of course, this extraordinary attribute catches villainous McCreep's attention, who plans to use it to rob unsuspecting citizens. When the flute ends up in his hands, Peewit and young knight Johan embark on a long journey to the land of the elusive Smurfs to ask for help. Can Papa Smurf help them retrieve the magic flute and save the day?—Nick Riganas
- Based upon the 9th album ("The Flute with Six Smurfs") of the Belgian comic-strip, "Johan and Peewit," which featured the very first appearance of the Smurfs.
The story takes place in the Middle-Ages. After young squire Sir Johan wins in a jousting tournament in his kingdom, his friend Peewit, the kingdom's court jester dwarf, celebrates by singing a victory song, with only one problem; he is so terrible a singer he drives the whole kingdom into hiding (not to mention attracting a powerful thunderstorm), and only Johan was kind enough to escort Peewit back to the castle in the rain.
The next morning, a musical instrument merchant arrives in front of the castle to sell instruments to Peewit, but only the nameless King and Johann are present to meet him. After being offered some obnoxious instruments, Johan and the King angrily send off the merchant, who accidentally leaves behind one of the instruments offered - a peculiar flute with only 6 holes! When Peewit almost takes notice, Johann and the King sneak the flute off into the castle to destroy it before he can find it. They throw it in the King's fireplace, but the fire emanates green smoke that permeates the King's room! Peewit is among those who try to put the fire out, and much to the dismay of Johan and the King, he finds the flute in the ashes. But once Peewit cleans the flute and goes around the kingdom playing it, he is delighted to make a surprising discovery; once played, the flute causes anyone who hears it to dance uncontrollably and subsequently pass out from exhaustion. Just as Peewit is enjoying tormenting everyone with this newfound gift, the same merchant as before is offering instruments to the owner of a bar in town. When he is worried to notice (and mentions) that the odd 6-holed flute he had was missing, he is overheard by a shady bearded fat man named Matthew Oilycreep (AKA: Matthew McCreep), who makes inquiries about the flute to the merchant, who recalls that he dropped it at the front of the kingdom while offering it to Peewit. Without a word, Oilycreep swiftly rides to the kingdom, where a big royal feast is being held, and a group of minstrels are playing for the kingdom (with Peewit unsuccessfully trying to get involved). Already invited as a guest, Oilycreep meets Peewit, who takes him to his room and shows him, as well as playing, the magic flute (but not before two mysterious tiny blue people, riding on a stork, unsuccessfully try to sneak it away from his room). Oilycreep asks Peewit to let him play it for a while. Peewit advises him beforehand to stop playing when he says so. But just as Oilycreep is about to play the flute, we cut to the minstrel band at the feast, and Oilycreep swiftly rides away into the dark.
The very next morning, a very enraged Peewit is tied up in his room. The King's advisor Lady Prattle, concerned and shocked, goes to untie him, and Peewit then goes berserk, furiously running around and chopping objects with an axe. Upon bumping into Johan and the King, Peewit complains that Oilycreep has stolen his magic flute! The King doesn't take this seriously at first, but Johan intuitively knows how serious the situation is, and Peewit claims that Oilycreep will use the flute to rob people. Johan and Peewit jump into action, searching from kingdom to kingdom, while Oilycreep, of course, begins using the flute to steal the riches from the people, piling them up in his wagon! (During the confusion, the aforementioned tiny blue people again try and fail to retrieve the flute.) But once our two heroes finally confront him, Oilycreep plays the flute and makes short work of Johan and Peewit, leaving them behind. The two realize that as long as Oilycreep has the flute, he is unstoppable, so Johan decides to consult with a magic-savvy friend of his - the wizard Homnibus.
While performing magic spells in his home, Homnibus is surprised to see Johan and Peewit, who are shown in by his young assistant Oliver. Over dinner, Homnibus regrets that he has no solution to breaking the spell of the flute, and says that the only ones who may know are the original makers of the flute, the "Smurfs." Although Homnibus does not know exactly where the Land of the Smurfs is, he decides to perform a spell on them called "hypnokinesis," in which they will be put into a deep sleep, and their bodies will be spiritually copied over to another area (similar in concept to The Matrix (1999)). Once this spell is performed on Johan and Peewit, they awaken in a beautiful forest in the Land of the Smurfs. They meet one of the Smurfs, a tiny blue humanoid creature (just like the ones who tried to retrieve the flute), roughly 5 to 6 inches tall, wearing white pants & working cap. (And most of the time he speaks, a magic chime is heard in his voice.) The Smurf takes our two heroes to the Smurf Village, and find that the Smurfs are all nearly identical in appearance (and are 100 years old), except for their patriarch, Papa Smurf (who is 542), who has a white beard and wears red pants & cap in lieu of white, and the houses they live in are big mushrooms, the tallest ones are nearly as big as Johan. In the Smurfs' own language, nouns and verbs are replaced with the word "smurf." Putting it in song, Papa Smurf states that although all the Smurfs look the same, they can each be identified by their personalities, and introduces nearly a dozen of them: Greedy Smurf, Poet Smurf, Farmer Smurf, Lazy Smurf, Handy Smurf, Clumsy Smurf, Festive Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, the bespectacled Brainy Smurf (the only Smurf to look remotely different from the rest), and Hefty Smurf. Returning to urgent affairs, Johan asks Papa Smurf for a way to break the magic effect of the flute. While he regrets that is impossible, he has a better idea: to build a new magic flute, so Peewit can fight with Oilycreep on equal terms. The Smurfs get to work immediately, and all through the night, they chop down a special tree in the forest (at the center of which is the part needed to make the flute). While the Smurfs get to work on carving the flute from the wood, a song number ensues in which a bored Peewit realizes that he can ask for a glass of water as "a smurf of smurf." Johan is laughing in amusement at this, as the Smurfs cannot understand him, and bring him the wrong things, until they finally give him a glass of water, upon which a stressed-out Peewit angrily changes his mind! A while later, the new flute is finished, but Festive Smurf wants to throw a big party for their hard work, which they do, later that night, in the Smurf Village. After a very cheerful party with music, fireworks, and food, Papa Smurf is just about to give Johan and Peewit the new flute, until they are suddenly awakened from their sleep too soon by Homnibus, who was very worried, as they were asleep for 2 days! When they demand to be sent back, Homnibus tries the spell again, but is exhausted from his efforts and gets a headache, for which he must get rest. While Oliver tends to the wizard, Johan and Peewit are frustrated, worried about what Oilycreep is doing at that moment...
At the same time, Oilycreep rides to the bleak kingdom of his crooked associate Lord Mumford (AKA: Earl Flatbroke), to whom he makes a fascinating proposal: For all the riches he stole from the people, Oilycreep wants to gather an army against the King's castle. He proposes to sail from the Port of Tromanack (AKA: Terminack) to an undisclosed island, where he will recruit men for his army. Unbeknownst to them, the same two Smurfs (who tried to get the flute back from Oilycreep earlier) were listening. Meanwhile, a dejected Johan and Peewit, still in Homnibus' home, are somewhat relieved to hear from Oliver that the wizard is nicely recovering, but is asleep. But miraculously, the Smurfs (riding storks; their means of travel) arrive in front of Homnibus' home. Papa Smurf, aware of what happened, personally presents the flute to Peewit, and much to the dwarf's delight, the flute works (having tested it on Johan)! After the two scout Smurfs intervene with news on the whereabouts and plans of Oilycreep, our heroes race to the Port of Tromanack, only to see that Oilycreep has just disembarked. Later, Papa Smurf (along with three other Smurfs he selected for this mission) comes to a despondent Johan and Peewit at the port, telling them that someone knows where Oilycreep is heading, and backtracks to Lord Mumford. This gives Johan an idea, and a short time later, Lord Mumford gets a letter, supposedly from Oilycreep (actually a forgery from Johan), telling him to meet him at the secret island. He then rides to the Port of Tromanack, and he, along with three sailors (two of which are a disguised Johan and Peewit), and the Smurfs in hiding, set off...
During the voyage, Peewit is obnoxiously seasick, making a spectacle of himself on the boat (with Johan sarcastically teasing him). Eventually, they make it to the island, on which is a big village full of overindulgent people. Lord Mumford goes to a bar to meet Oilycreep, who is surprised to see him, and is puzzled at the letter he got that he didn't write. When they went to look for the sailors of the boat to find out who's responsible, Johan and Peewit look around town for the two villains. The duos finally cross paths, and without a word, both Peewit and Oilycreep immediately begin their duel of the flutes, and the resulting musical noise is so powerful it causes everyone in town (even Johan and Lord Mumford) to dance! At the end of the cataclysmic musical duel, both men are exhausted and out of breath, until Peewit has enough strength to blow out one last note that finishes Oilycreep, and then reclaims the other flute as well, thus emerging the victor.
Having won the battle, Johan, Peewit, and the Smurfs return to the kingdom, bringing Oilycreep and Mumford to face justice, and return all the riches to the people. Peewit wants to keep the magic flutes, but Johan firmly stresses that both flutes must be returned to the Smurfs. Thus, Peewit secretly tries to carve a fake flute, so he can give it to the Smurfs while he keeps one of the real ones. Before the Smurfs go back home, they appear before the King. Johan and Peewit personally return the flutes to Papa Smurf, who thanks them for doing the right thing, as the flutes in their possession would only bring them trouble. One of the Smurfs even suggests that Johan and Peewit may have further adventures with them in the future (which, in the comics and even the Hanna-Barbera animated series, they do). As the Smurfs fly for home on their storks, everyone waves goodbye to them from the top of the castle, but behind everyone, Peewit begins to play what looks like the magic flute, and nothing happens. Peewit kept his fake flute by mistake, and gave the real one to the Smurfs! He throws a tantrum as we pan away from the top of the castle and the credits roll.
