Mister Smith Entertainment has clinched first key international sales on Weston Razooli’s “Riddle of Fire.”
Among major territories, Mister Smith has closed Japan (Klockworx), France (ASC Distribution) and Spain (Flamingo Films). Deals build on a co-u.S acquisition by Yellow Veil Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome, which plan a domestic theatrical bow in early 2024, releasing the film on 35mm.
“Riddle of Fire” has also been sold to Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), Greece (Odeon) and Femeway/The Film Group and Front Row Filmed Entertainment for the Middle East, Singapore (the Shaw Organization), ex-Yugoslavia (Blitz Film) and worldwide airlines and ships (Anuvu).
Razooli’s first feature made its debut in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and its North American premiere as the Toronto Festival’s Midnight Madness closing-night film.
A highlight on Mister Smith’s AFM slate, “Riddle of Fire” has additional territories in negotiations, which Mse will attempt to close in Santa Monica.

Weston Razooli is far more than just a writer, producer and director. He’s a world-builder, as evidenced by his feature debut, “Riddle of Fire.” The faux-’70s children’s fantasy adventure, which premieres May 20 in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight program, follows three tweens on a quest for ingredients to bake a blueberry pie, all to coax the boys’ mother into letting them play a stolen video game. Danger arrives when they meet the “Enchanted Blade Gang” led by a witch (Lio Tipton). Its deadpan comedy and surreal feel — somewhere between “Escape to Witch Mountain,” “Scooby-Doo” and “Napoleon Dynamite” — make it equally appealing to kids, Gen Xers, stoners, Adult Swim watchers and fans of cult indie cinema.
“There’s this tone that I call a ‘dark ’70s sci-fi fantasy vibe’ in children’s films that get a bit scary, which I think is important for an adventure film,” Razooli says.

While discussing the current drama surrounding “The Real Housewives of Potomac” star Robyn Dixon, former “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Nene Leakes told “The Breakfast Club” the entire current “Real Housewives” franchise is “star-less.” Leakes, who departed “Rhoa” after Season 12 in 2020, added that she has no idea who Eboni K. Williams (“The Real Housewives of New York”) is.
Leakes went on to say that “there’s a difference between being famous and being known,” and even though she labled Kandi Burruss the “star” title, her words have since sparked a conversation about which housewives truly can be considered famous.
Whether you think of them as being true celebs or just “Bravolebrities,” here’s a list of the ladies who were notable before they given a peach, a diamond, a flute of champagne or an apple.

Actor Lance Kerwin, best known to horror fans for playing Mark Petrie in Tobe Hooper’s Salem’s Lot (1979), has passed away at just 62 years old, Variety reports this afternoon.
“An autopsy to determine the cause of death is being conducted, according to his daughter Savanah,” Variety reports.
Lance Kerwin was born on November 6, 1960 in Newport Beach, California, and he began his career as a prolific child actor in the early-mid 1970s. It was just a few years after his on-screen debut in the TV series “Emergency!” that Kerwin landed the role of young Mark Petrie in Salem’s Lot, the original mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s classic vampire story.
Lance Kerwin’s other credits throughout the 1970s include “Little House on the Prairie,” Reflections of Murder, “Gunsmoke,” Escape to Witch Mountain, and “Wonder Woman.”

David J. Negron Sr., a conceptual painter, illustrator and storyboard artist with credits including Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park, died peacefully in his sleep on October 12, his family tells Deadline. He was 85.
“He was an inspiration to the Motion Picture community and the fine arts world,” the Negron family said in a statement. “We have lost a loving father, grandfather and a beautiful soul.”
Negron embarked on his career as a conceptual painter in the mid-1960s, going on to collaborate with Steven Spielberg on Indiana Jones and the Raiders of The Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, visualizing iconic scenes including the Giant Boulder chase for the former, along with various dinosaur environments for the latter. He also painted iconic images for Ridley Scott’s dystopian sci-fi classic, Blade Runner, based on Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

Before there was Zac Efron and Harry Styles—hell, before the Internet boyfriend was even a part of our accepted lexicon—there was Erik von Detten. He was the epitome of a Disney dreamboat: The baby blue eyes, the smoldering gaze, the somehow always perfectly gelled back blonde hair. Teens everywhere had his poster plastered over the walls of their bedrooms. Erik von Detten was your first crush, a Tiger Beat editor's dream come true and "the sexual awakening for a whole generation of girls, gays and theys," as one Twitter user so aptly put it. From the mid-90s to the early 2000s, he captured hearts in Escape to Witch Mountain, Brink! and The Princess Diaries. (He gave Mia Thermopolis...

If you’ve listened to Daily Dead’s Corpse Club podcast, then you might know that half the time I open my mouth, it’s to talk about Disney Channel Original Movies (no matter what the topic of the episode is). I’ve always found great delight in how movies released on the family-friendly network can still retain nightmare-inducing thrills and chills, whether it be through a theater of frozen bodies in Halloweentown or the sharp-toothed imaginary friend in Don’t Look Under the Bed.
While the DCOMs have had their macabre moments, the truth is that previous generations of viewers got to experience an even more spooky side of Disney on the big screen. In the cinematic world following the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween, Walt Disney Productions wasn’t holding back when...

Dwayne Johnson fans who also have Disney Plus, we’ve got news for you. One of The Rock’s most forgotten movies has just arrived on the Mouse House’s streaming service. Yes, as of Friday, July 3rd, 2009’s Race to Witch Mountain is available to stream on the site. It might’ve passed a lot of users by, though, as it’s a film that’s not much remembered nowadays.
Race to Witch Mountain is a reboot of Disney’s Witch Mountain franchise that originated in the 70s, about a pair of teenage aliens with psychic powers trying to get home. That central premise is retained for this 21st reimagining that features AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig as Sara and Seth, the aforementioned extraterrestrial adolescents.
To give it a bit more appeal, the studio threw Johnson into the mix, too. The Rock plays cab driver Jack Bruno, who protects...

Dwayne Johnson is set to star in Disney blockbuster Jungle Cruise alongside Emily Blunt next July, but this July you can watch his first action-adventure Disney movie that was made over a decade ago. As it was just before The Rock became the franchise gold dust that he is today, you may never have heard of it, but Johnson fans should definitely give it a go when it arrives on Disney Plus next month.
2009’s Race to Witch Mountain is due to become available on the streaming service from Friday, July 3rd. A remake of 1975’s Escape to Witch Mountain, the movie stars AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig as teens Sara and Seth, who are secretly extraterrestrials with psychic powers. As with the original, the plot sees the kids trying to get to Witch Mountain, where their spaceship is hidden, before nefarious forces get hold of them. Race, however, adds in Johnson’s character,...

Starting with the bouncy desk lamp that introduces every Pixar movie, America’s most beloved animation studio excels at refashioning familiar material with fresh emotion. That formula — whether it involves ebullient toys or snarky closet monsters — yields such satisfying results that even a lesser Pixar movie can radiate vision.
“Onward,” the witty and wistful tale of two brothers trying to finish the spell that will resurrect their dead dad, underscores this point: It’s not a star of the Pixar canon, but this big-hearted reworking of fantasy and emotional family bonds .
Context is key. The spectrum of quality for Pixar movies ranges from “decent but underwhelming” to “flat-out masterpiece,” and “Onward” falls somewhere in the middle. A solid new addition, it lacks the psychological sophistication of “Inside Out,” the wondrous slapstick of “Wall-e,” or the narrative foundation of the “Toy Story” franchise. Still, director Dan Scanlon (emerging from the shadow...

Thanks to The Omen (1976) and little Damien’s watchdog, Hollywood figured they could mine some horror from our canine friends, on the assumption that there’s something inherently evil to exploit. Except…they’re not. Are they sometimes vicious? Definitely. But I would hardly call dogs evil, especially ones allegedly in favor with Satan. Which brings us to todays’ Tube, as TV naturally had to take a shot at demonizing our four legged friends, a task at which Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (1978) fails spectacularly. It is however, a blast and more fun than a bowl full of kibble.
Originally airing on Halloween night of 1978 on CBS, Devil Dog was up against Linda Blair and her demonic cousin in Summer of Fear over on NBC, a true dilemma for horror fans as both satisfy in different ways. But since I’ve already covered that Wes Craven helmed Ya adaptation...

Who knew a little stuffed animal could cause so much trouble? Kim Richards, that's who. On April 25, the final installment of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion opened with Kim chasing Lisa Rinna (who had stormed off set) down the hall. Kim had the now-infamous bunny in hand. "Can I talk to you?" Kim asked.
"No!" Rinna snapped. "That was the most humiliating thing that's ever happened to me and I will not accept this. I'm sorry, for you to do that, you are a sick woman." (Icymi, Kim had returned a stuffed creature that Rinna had given as a gift to Kim's new grandchild.) "Do you feel good about getting back at me?" Rinna asked. Kim replied that she was very superstitious and didn't want the bunny in her house. "You're a victim!

For folks who loves both baseball and movies, it's incredibly sad that Hollywood's takes on our national pastime continually whiff with a frequency that makes Adam Dunn look like Joe Dimaggio. But 40 years ago today, a film was released that got everything beautifully, hilariously and even painfully right: The Bad News Bears. A tartly-scripted comic saga about a no-hope Little League team from L.A.'s San Fernando Valley, the film — directed by Michael Ritchie from an original screenplay written by Bill Lancaster — shocked and amused audiences with its unbridled...

Disgusting, or shocking, are words often used to inform the audience what awaits them in a horror film. When a film is about demon rape, lurid immediately comes to mind. However, if you have a restrained (and respected) British horror director at the helm, will the results be different? Incubus (1982) is a fascinating shocker that attempts to walk the line between classy whodunit and lascivious bloodlust.
Released in September by Artists Releasing Corporation, Incubus (or, The Incubus according to the poster) had a large budget for a horror title at the time (5.1 million Cad) and was not a draw at the box office. Reviews were mostly dismal as well, and considering the subject matter, this is not surprising. ‘Demon rape’ does not scream fun night out at the movies. However, Incubus provides many moments of terror designed with the discerning horror fiend in mind. It’s an underappreciated gem.

From the director of The Iron Giant and The Incredibles comes the sci-fi adventure, Tomorrowland. Here's Ryan's review...
Director Brad Bird has an almost immaculate run of form when it comes to bringing larger-than-life entertainments to the screen. The Iron Giant was one of the most acclaimed animated films of the 1990s. The Incredibles and Ratatouille are among Pixar's best films so far. His live-action debut Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, while not perfect, was perhaps the most entertaining movie entry since the first.
Bird brings his blue-sky storytelling to bear on Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, a eyed sci-fi fairytale with elements taken straight from classic pulp magazine stories. It’s The Wizard Of Oz retold by Ray Bradbury or Hugo Gernsback, with bits of The Terminator and Buck Rogers thrown in for good measure. It’s an entertaining yet sometimes befuddling bag of intricately moving parts, not all of which fit together too well.

In the world of reality TV, nothing stays the same for long. The stakes need to be raised, drama heightened, and fresh sources of conflict added to the mix. Nowhere is this spirit of reinvention more alive than in Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise. And when we say reinvention, we of course mean recasting -- because sometimes the only way to fix a flailing show is to infuse it with new, claws-out, drama-queen blood. But then there are the precious few who stay, season after season, either because Bravo has anointed them the chosen ones or fans just can't get enough.
The list of original Housewives still on their respective shows is a short yet complicated one, some stars leaving, some leaving then returning, and some being demoted to "friend of the Housewives" status. And while it seems that Housewives come and go every time the wind blows, we did do...

The sequel to Disney's 1975 smash Escape To Witch Mountain sees alien siblings Tony and Tia (Ike Eisenmann and Kim Richards) return to Earth and straight into another adventure. Their supernatural powers come into play from the moment they land as they uncover a mind control plot led by villainous professor Victor (Christopher Lee) and his nasty benefactor Letha (Bette Davis). Outlandish fun for the kids with performances to match from the veterans.

Because where there’s a will, there’s a segway, Kevin James will be returning to theaters approximately five years too late for the sequel to 2009′s small town security-based comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The first film was a surprise hit, raking in $146 million, and James and his writing partner Nick Bakay are hoping to strike gold again with another installment of the tale that follows mild-mannered mall security guard Blart as he transforms into a hero to save a group of hostages from an in-mall bank heist and win the love of a kiosk clerk played by Jayma Mays. Andy Flickman (Parental Guidance, You Again, the Escape to Witch Mountain remake) is in talks to direct the sequel, which doesn’t have a synopsis yet. But if you care to recall the the ending to the first film, Blart (it rhymes with fart) frees the hostages from the mall, then...

Some movies stay with you. People are constantly amazed that I can remember so much about movies but also what theatre I saw them in and under what circumstances. Movies can be like songs in the memory, where you were physically and mentally and emotionally the first time you heard a song and how it takes on much more meaning than the musicians ever intended. The same with books, I recall at what point in my life I read certain books and where I was at the time. And so, it’s the same with movies, for me anyway.
In 1966 my Father entered John Cochran Veteran’s Hospital in St. Louis, on North Grand, for brain surgery. He never walked out of there. We were visiting Dad before the surgery, at eleven years old I was already a die hard Movie Geek. I used to beg my parents,...

Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed is a feel-good comedy about a group of misfits looking for love and acceptance. The film uses a touch of movie magic to form an interesting new twist on the same old romantic comedies seen time and again. With a fantastic all-star cast to boot, this was one of the festival’s greatest gems.

It looks like Kim Richards and her sister Kyle have always known how to show off their sass for the cameras.
In this photo from the early '80s, the ladies pose in front of their family fire place, showing off their long locks and feisty attitudes. The duo, who both currently star on the hit series "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," dress the part of a typical '80s teenager with their feathered bangs and bright blue jeans. Both girls had their fair share of fame in their younger days -- Kim hit it big as Tia in Disney's "Escape to Witch Mountain" while Kyle had a recurring role on "Little House on the Prairie" -- but they've both shot back into the spotlight with the Bravo reality series.
The photo shows the happy sisters hamming it up for the cameras, but their relationship doesn't always play out as nicely on camera.
