"My new role in life, being an alien, is to enlighten the people, make them laugh, help them out," says the legendary basketball player-turned-film producer Shaquille O'Neal — who stands at 7’1”, weighs well over 300 pounds, and wears size 22 shoes and 60Xl suits — as we sit down at WeWork in Century City to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast. A total of 166 films have been submitted for consideration in the documentary feature category for the 91st Academy Awards.
Notable titles up for the gold include “Rbg,” “Three Identical Strangers,” “Free Solo” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” — which have performed strongly at the box office. Fred Rogers documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” has grossed $22.6 million domestically.
Nine of the 10 titles named as finalists for the International Documentary Association’s top feature are on the list, including “Crime + Punishment,” “Dark Money,” “Free Solo,” “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” “Minding the Gap,” “Of Fathers and Sons,” “The Silence of Others,” “United Skates” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences noted that several of the 166 films have not yet had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying runs. A shortlist of 15 movies will be announced on Dec. 17.

Last year, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 166 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others for the first time on a single date this year: December 17.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume until last month, when they received a batch of 77, with more to come. It’s a burden to watch them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list. Give the advantage to early box office hits that were made available in the summer such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” “Rbg,” and “Three Identical Strangers,” as well as September’s list including critically hailed “Dark Money,...

A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

In a year that has seen multiple documentaries find mainstream success, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 166 docs that have been submitted for Oscar consideration this year.
Among the films on the list are Michael Moore’s anti-Trump polemic “Fahrenheit 11/9,” as well as CNN Films’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography “Rbg” and Focus’ Mister Rogers retrospective “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
Other films considered frontrunners include “Three Identical Strangers,” the wild story of triplets who were separated at birth by a bizarre experiment, “Free Solo,” which documents the first ever attempt to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan without any climbing gear, and “Dark Money,” an investigative report into the influence of billionaires on American democracy through the lens of a Montana congressional race.

Sure, bees can be scary under the right circumstances; say, you’re allergic for instance, or you accidentally knock over a hive, or someone fills your mattress with them. But do you know what’s even scarier? Family. This brings us to Killer Bees (1974), an interesting yet generically titled TV movie that has more to do with the ties that bind than the stings that kill.
Originally broadcast on Tuesday, February 26th as an ABC Tuesday Movie of the Week, Killer Bees had killer competition with CBS’ smash lineup of M*A*S*H/Hawaii Five-o and NBC had their World Premiere Movie. Any guesses as to who won that night? No matter, because ABC had a secret weapon in Kate Jackson, my favorite Angel and first boyhood crush; she is more than enough reason for a recommendation from moi.

As New Yorkers flock to the Hamptons this summer, there's another side of Bridgehampton that most vacationers don't see. The new documentary, Killer Bees, hitting theaters later this month amid the tourist season, tells the story of the Bridgehampton High School basketball team, known as the Killer Bees, as they prepare to defend their state championship.
In a clip from the documentary, which The Hollywood Reporter is debuting exclusively, news reports and the film's subjects explain the difference between the Hamptons of upper-class vacations and that of an African-American community dealing with racial discrimination, gentrification and income inequality.

The Wu-Tang Killer Bees are swarming on the Pharma Bro — sort of — in a dope new track posted this week to Soundcloud. On Friday, the Wu-Tang Clan dropped a new single, “Lessons Learn’d,” from the group’s upcoming album “The Saga Continues.” Featuring Wu-Tang heavyweight Inspectah Deck and frequent Wu-Tang guest rapper Redman, the song includes the line “my price hikin’ like the pills Martin Shkreli sell.” The line refers to the now-imprisoned pharmaceutical investor who became derisively referred to as “Pharma Bro” after his company acquired the antiparasitic drug Daraprim, essential in the treatment of AIDS-related opportunistic illnesses,...

Chicago – Matt Walsh has been more visible lately, and it has much to do with his approach to character roles, beginning as Mike McLintock on the HBO series “Veep” and currently in the new film “Into the Storm.” For a Chicago native who began doing comedy improvisation here, he is moving on up.
Matthew Paul Walsh was born in Chicago, and graduated from Hinsdale High School. After college at Northern Illinois University, he became enamored of the improv scene in Chicago in the early 1990s, and studied under the master instructor Del Close. While dividing time between the Annoyance Theater and the ImprovOlympics (iO) in the city, he helped to found the “Uptight Citizens Brigade” (Ucb), which also featured Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts and Matt Besser. The troupe got its own show on Comedy Central, and has opened Ucb theaters in New York and Los Angeles.

A theme can be a wrestler or show’s very identity. It is the very first impression made on fans in most cases and the right theme can create a frenzy thousands strong with a single note or sound effect. WWE in-house musician Jim Johnston has done a beyond admirable job of writing, composing and recording themes for a vast majority of superstars over the years, but sometimes wrestling reaches out to mainstream musicians to make a theme song for a wrestler.

The 70s was, shall we say, an “interesting” time in cinema. Whilst mainstream Hollywood was churning out some of its most revered movies – The Godafather, The Exorcist, Mean Streets, and pretty much the entire oeuvre of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola – low-budget cinema and in particular genre movies were exploring very different cultural avenues.
Whilst we had the likes of Night of the Living Dead, which explored soci-cultural issues, using the genre as a metaphor for much bigger “stories”, we also had the birth of the slasher movie boom in John Carpenter’s Halloween. Yet slipped somewhere in between was a strange sub-genre: the nature-run-amok film. Jaws, Piranha, Killer Bees, The Swarm, Grizzly, Day of the Animals, Kingdom of the Spiders, Phase Four, Bug; the animals ran rampant and so did zoological horror…...

The second generation of Comic Execution has officially begun! I’m actually surprisingly excited to start a whole new block of reviews because the first generation taught me that not only could I be surprised by what develops in a series by issue three but also just how critical I actually can be of comics. That’s not to say I didn’t maybe gush a bit over ‘Ballistic’ but ‘Ghosted’ actually had to earn my respect, which it most certainly did. Of course, not all the first generation comics are done yet. Here’s the status of the first generation of Comic Execution so far:
Executed: ‘Sheltered’, ‘The Strain: The Fall’, ‘Dinosaurs Attack!’, ‘Tomorrowland’, ‘Lazarus’, ‘Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril’, ‘Sidekick’, ‘Extinction Parade’
Survivors: ‘Ghosted’, ‘Red Sonja’, ‘Fbp’, ‘Trillium’
On-going: ‘The Rocketeer & The Spirit’, ’3 Guns’, ‘It Came!’
If, as I suspect, the on-going series are not executed before their run is over,...

I'm not sure why, but this episode didn't annoy me nearly as much as the rest of this season. Maybe because I can finally see the finale light at the end of the tunnel. But luckily, this is the last week of "teams," and starting next week it's every designer for himself.

Filmmaker David DeCoteau has become famous for two things - creating his own genre of film (boxer briefs horror), and for casting hot young actors who may or may not go on to bigger things, but more than likely would rather have all evidence of their involvement (see above) wiped from their resumes.
Under a myriad of alternate names (my favorite being Richard Chasen), David has brought us such memorable trash as The Brotherhood Series, Leeches!, Wolves Of Wall Street, and well, too many to list. If you go further down his filmography, you'll find a soft core classic (Leather Jacket Love Story), and some more ... directly sexual films.
But for whatever reason, David has turned his attention to carving out his own niche, and is now expanding on it with an ambitious new series of films titled 1313. They combine those DeCoteau...

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree,...

1313: Bigfoot Island promises to be the ultimate war between shirtless young men with no body hair and the hairiest movie monster of them all. No clean-shaven lad will be safe when they ditch their tops, enter the forest, and face the hirsute horror of an angry Sasquatch.
Synopsis:
On an island in the Pacific Northwest, a young woman calls to ancient spirits in order to right the wrongs inflicted on her. For this she summons the mythical beast that has long been rumored to roam the verdant forests. Nearby a young man readies a cabin for the arrival of his friends. They’ve been coming to this place every year since they were kids, to relax and shape up before the start of a new college year. Only this time they’re about to meet their worst nightmare.

"Beeware" of social media! It’s what all the Killer Bees are using now.
All lame jokes and flash mobs aside, this episode did provide some much-needed conspiracy that was absent last week, shedding some light on Adalind and Captain Renard. Although, I wish a little more was laid out than what we saw here.
I hate to sound choosy because I’m truly glad the mythology and ground work needed to make the show more than just a procedural are being built up, but “I won’t let anything happen to you” and “it’s close” is not very much to go with. Yes, it looks like some of the creatures are with the Grimms (whatever that is), and the bees are one of them.
However, the only thing these “sides” are telling me is there is a line in the sand, but the stakes and what’s being...

I was terribly excited to see this title. I’m a sucker for nature vs. humanity movies: The Birds, Day of the Triffids, Godzilla, even Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I was even more excited when on the cover was a swarm of bees… Nay, giant bees… Nay-nay, Giant Killer Bees! seem to be headed right for the beautiful cast. Then, my head almost popped right off when I saw that this was a Science Fiction Thriller for Girls! Oh boy!! This is just up my alley!
That’s what I thought, until I pushed play. I wasn’t entirely wrong; this movie was right up my alley for all the wrong reasons.

As a young man, he assisted a cross-dressing alien in evading the feds in Spielberg’s 1982 smash-hit E.T. The Extraterrestrial and was told to “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” in Coppola’s 1983 drama The Outsiders. He made famous the battle-cry ‘Wolverines!’ in John Milius’ 1984 Cold War flick Red Dawn and as ‘Jim Halsey’ nearly ate a french-fried finger in director Robert Harmon’s 1986 horror classic The Hitcher. Years later, and with nearly 150 titles to his credit, C. Thomas Howell sat down with us to discuss with candor his varied career as well as his role in Steven R. Monroe’s upcoming feature MoniKa. 1313 Haunted Frat Legendary schlock master David DeCoteau (Voodoo Academy, The Brotherhood) strikes again with yet another entry in his ultra campy horror series - 1313. Of course, a David DeCoteau film wouldn't be complete without a bunch of tasty hunks running around in their tightie whities, and it appears that "1313: Haunted Frat" certainly delivers on that promise. However, this time around it seems like DeCoteau is capitalizing on the recent trend of nerd chic, by featuring a hot nerd as his leading man.
Starring an assortment of twinks including David Flannery, Luke Allen, Derek North (College Debts, 1313 Giant Killer Bees) and Jake Madden, 1313: Haunted Frat takes place during Spring Break. With most of the frat members out partying, the few remaining pledges are haunted by a sinister visitor. Turns out the fraternity was built atop the burned ruins of an insane asylum.

I was kind of intrigued when I heard a while back that b-movie staple David DeCoteau was remaking H.G. Wells’ Food of the Gods. Somewhere along the way the title got changed to 1313: Giant Killer Bees, and his remake sure does feature a lot more half-naked hunks than that found in both Wells’ novel and the 1976 movie version.
DeCoteau has carved out his own niche market in recent years with a slew of low-budget homoerotic horror flicks, of which I am fairly certain this H.G. Wells’ inspired nature gone amok flick is the latest despite a tagline on the artwork proclaiming the film to be “A science fiction chiller for girls”. Who are the distributors trying to kid? I showed the trailer you’ll find below to a female coworker who is big into horror, and we barely got 15 seconds into it before she declared, “They’re gay!”
Food of the Gods?...

Derek North Up and coming actor Derek North, through his classic looks, comes across as a cross between legendary actor Montgomery Clift (A Place in the Sun) and JFK Jr. The young actor got his start in comedy with College Debts co-starring Celeste Holm, but it's his work in the horror entertainment field, for B-movie master David DeCoteau (The Brotherhood), in such efforts as 1313: Giant Killer Bees! & 1313: Haunted Palace that is sure to get him noticed. Will he be able to prove his uniqueness, talent and distinctiveness in future films? Only time will tell on that, but part of me suspects he might just have the drive to make it in the business after taking on an ambitious effort of having already directed and produced his first short film, a bio on none other then Monty himself, simply entitled Monty. David DeCoteau has had a wide array of...

Glen Basner's FilmNation is to fully finance its first film, a prestige genre title that Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli is set to direct this summer, writes Screen Daily. Basner and his team will commence international pre-sales here on the untitled story, which Peli, riding high after producing the North American hit Insidious, will direct from his own screenplay and is producing with Brian Witten. The horror film will tell the "tale of friends who discover they are not alone after they become stranded in a ghost town overrun by nature." Nature gone wrong is Not an easy subgenre to pull off, which is why it mostly comes off in the vein of Piranha, Killer Bees or might I add M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening (yikes). Hopefully Peli can defy the odds!

Flying bikes! Killer bees! Through the haze of youth, some films shocked and thrilled. As an adult, though, they now look rather less impressive…
Some movies are so perfectly crafted that, despite the passing of time rendering fashions and technologies obsolete, their stories remain as relevant and captivating as they were when they first appeared.
There’s another category of movie, meanwhile, on which time has an entirely different effect. Where Citizen Kane or Alien have aged like fine wine or matured like posh cheese, others no longer look quite as convincing as they did on their initial release.
Which brings me to the topic of this list, which looks back at 10 of the films that, for a youth addicted to TV movies and VHS tapes from the corner shop, once thrilled and terrified at every turn. Some 20 years on, many of them are still hugely entertaining, though not for...

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.

Wisconsin Democrats won President Obama's attention and inspired other states by bolting the capital to protest a crackdown on unions. David Graham on the history of the political walkout.
You can't win a vote when you've got fewer votes than your opponents. But Wisconsin Democrats are discovering a centuries-old corollary truth this week: you can't lose a vote if you don't let it happen. And that's why 14 of them have fled out of Madison and across the border into Illinois, hoping to prevent a vote that would cut benefits for public-sector workers and curtail the right to collective bargaining.

There aren't enough Democrats to block the plan in the state Senate, but without their presence at the capitol, there isn't a quorum in the body, and without a quorum the Republican minority can't vote on the bill. It's a desperate tactic,...

What has Piranha 3D’s success spawned? Well, for one thing, it looks like we’re in for a wave of critter disaster (critaster?) movies getting remade. First up? Irwin Allen’s 1978 movie The Swarm, about killer bees from South America.Killer bees? Right (sits up, cracks knuckles)… The Internet is abuzz today with word flying in that The Ring producer Roy Lee and Paranormal Activity’s Steven Schneider are busy little bees developing a new take on the film, which saw entomologist Michael Caine stung with the job of stopping the Us military from attacking the angry insects, a plan he figures would only enrage them and see Houston overrun, resulting in trouble for a star-studded cast that included Katharine Ross, Richard Widmark, Richard Chamberlain, Olivia de Havilland and more. Okay, that’s enough bee-focused gags.According to The Wrap, the producers have attached ads director Ash Bolland to...

Charles B. Pierce was a popular regional filmmaker who made his feature film debut as director, producer, and cinematographer for the 1972 docu-drama The Legend of Boggy Creek. The low-budget film dramatized the legend of a Sasquatch-like creature known as the Fouke Monster, that was reputed to terrorize the small town in Arkansas near Texarkana. Boggy Creek became a major hit on the drive-in circuit. Pierce also directed and wrote a 1985 pseudo-sequel, The Barbaric Beast of Boggy Creek, Part II, and appeared in the role of Professor Brian C. `Doc’ Lockart.
Pierce was born in Hammond, Indiana, on June 16, 1938, and moved to Hampton, Arkansas, with his family as a child. He operated an advertising agency in Texarkana, and began working in films as a set decorator in the mid-1960s. Wow two horror deaths in less than one week (If you count Corey Haim that is) . The Legend of Boggy Creek director, Charles B. Pierce, died on Friday at a nursing home. No cause was specified. He was 71. Pierce's low budget documentary-type horror flick, about a creature lurking in an Arkansas swam, paved the way for and influenced movies like The Blair Witch. Other horror credits include The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Boggy Creek II and the 1973 made for TV movie Killer Bees.

Hard Ride To Hell is a horror movie about to begin shooting starring the rare Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) and directed by Penelope Buitenhuis. The film also stars Miguel Ferrer (Robocop) and Laura Mennell (Trick 'R Treat, Watchmen.)
“It’s about an old curse and demon bikers,” Isabelle told Fangoria. “I literally have only scanned the script because I just got it last week. I have a pretty large part in it—at least, I don’t die till the very end.”
Buitenhuis directed the made-for-tv horror Killer Bees, as well as thrillers like Wide Awake, Ashes to Ashes, and Dangerous Attraction.
