The New Adventures Of Gilligan's Island-Starring Bob Denver
raysond23 August 2006
This series premiered as part of ABC-TV's Sunshine Saturday Morning Lineup from its premiere on September 7, 1974 and ended in repeated episodes on September 4, 1977. Only 24 episode were produced for this series which was directed by Rudy Larriva and produced by Sherwood Schwartz, and executive producer by Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott for Filmation Productions. This series featured tales of the faithful charter ship "The S.S. Minnow" and five dissimilar passengers who embark on a pleasure cruise and are shipwrecked on a deserted uncharted island(somewhere in the South Pacific)where they must learn not only to get along with each other but must learn survival techniques to keep themselves alive on the island. Based on the hugely popular TV series,"Gilligan's Island"(which ran on CBS-TV for three seasons from 1964 to 1967),also produced by Sherwood Schwartz, who was the original shows' executive producer. This animated version from Filmation productions(the studio behind the animated shows "Fat Albert" "Sabrina:The Teenage Witch","The Archies",and the live-action shows of "Isis","Shazam!",and "Space Academy")begins a new chapter in the further adventures of everyone's favorite little buddy Gilligan and the rest of the castaways.

In this version, five of the original cast members supplied voices for the new series, which features the voices of Willy Gilligan(Bob Denver),Jonas "The Skipper" Grumby(Alan Hale,Jr.),Millionaire Thurston Howell,III(Jim Backus),His Wife Lovey Howell(Natalie Schafer),and The Professor,Roy Hinkley(Russell Johnson). Absent for this new foray were Tina Louise and Dawn Wells from the original series, and were replaced by Jane Webb and Jane Edwards in the roles of Mary Ann and Ginger. In the animated version,Gilligan was named Willy(and this was from the first season)and adopted a pet monkey named Snubby. The adventures with Gilligan and the rest of the castaways remained the same from the original series, but only with a new twist and new characters that would emerged from time to time. Only 24 episodes were made from this series, and was broadcast in repeated episodes for three consecutive seasons until ABC-TV pulled the plug in September of 1977.

But this wasn't the last that audiences have heard from Gilligan. In 1981,CBS resurrected the character again in the short-lived series called "Gilligan's Planet",which lasted one season. In this new version, only actors Dawn Wells,Russell Johnson,Bob Denver, and Jim Backus reprised their perspective roles.

Above average Saturday morning fare. Part of ABC's "Funshine Saturday." Had a simian named Snubby, in addition to the usual cast. They organized a democracy on the island. Snubby got half a vote. Was similar stories to the old Gilligan, but dumber. Still better than most Saturday morning shows of the time.

This should be on DVD

I was 6 years old when I first saw this cartoon. It was my favourite cartoon. I will never forget the excitement I felt watching it! I mean for a 6 year old, it didn't take much. I couldn't wait for this cartoon to come on. I believe the Groovy Ghoulies introduced it. Then there was also "Gilligan's Planet". I loved Gilligan's Island, so it was only natural to enjoy these cartoons. So, this was a dream come true. Now that I have kids, I would love for them to be able to watch these cartoons. I hope they come on DVD, because I would love to watch them over & over again. There was no limit to their imaginations, everything you could possibly think of they made from bamboo, but they couldn't build a ship?! A great escape, especially in times like these, when it's hard to find "safe" programming for your kids.
