While early reactions to Wonder Woman 1984 were generally positive, the film is now facing a lot of controversy and backlash online, with many fans hailing Patty Jenkins’ sequel as the worst pic in the Dceu, which, given its unwieldy track record, is a bold statement to make.
Disregarding the lacklustre action sequences, and its numerous plot holes that haunt the coherency of the narrative, folks are also struggling with a certain element involving the return of Steve Trevor. And we’ll warn you now that spoilers lie ahead.
For those who’ve watched WW84, you’ll know that the circumstances involving the apparent resurrection of Trevor were confusing, to say the least. The character suddenly sprang up 30 minutes into the film, where he explained that his soul took possession of a random guy’s body. What makes this even more unsettling is the fact that Diana and Steve proceed to...

The well-reviewed “Charlie’s Angels” reboot is the latest studio box office bomb of the fall movie season, following in the footsteps of such disasters as “The Goldfinch,” “Gemini Man,” “Motherless Brooklyn,” and “Terminator: Dark Fate.” The Elizabeth Banks-directed action comedy failed to crack $9 million at the box office over its opening weekend. Box office tracking had “Charlie’s Angels” opening at an already-disappointing $10 million, but the final total came in well below that low mark. IndieWire’s box office expert Tom Brueggemann says the film “will be a significant loss” for Sony this season.

The genre series is based on the famous artwork of Simon Stålenhag. A co-production with Fox 21 Television Studios, the eight-episode series will be helmed by executive producer Nathaniel Halpern, with Mark Romanek directing the pilot episode.

We’re yet to see how ‘Wonder Women’ director, Patty Jenkins has followed up the phenomenal success of her 2017 DC outing, but Jenkins has hinted at a more contemporary setting for a possible third offering for the Amazonian superhero.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Jenkins was quick to mention that, as yet, she is not committed to a third film but if she was to return she wasn’t keen to do another period piece. The setting would definitely be set in the present day.
“I’m not set, but I’m not dying to do another period piece. I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.

Smith from the Sundance Annenberg Inclusion initiative, filmmaker Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women), producer Nina Jacobson (Crazy Rich Asians), and Sundance Institute’s Karim Ahmad as they discussed a recent study by the Sundance and the Inclusion Initiative that revealed data about race and gender when it came to film submissions to the festival and how that data is relevant to the industry.

In recent years, the Scad Savannah Film Festival has become a favorite Oscar season stop for stars and filmmakers. Unlike the Toronto Intl. Film Festival or Sundance, it’s not a frenzied hotbed of deals and world premieres, but it has its own quaint charms that reflect the historic 285-year-old city where it unspools.
“It’s one of those deep indie-film-loving communities that are as passionate about watching movies as it is about making them,” says director Jason Reitman, who shot “The Front Runner” in the city, and will be at the fest for a gala screening, along with star Hugh Jackman. It’s a return trip for Reitman, who screened “Tully” at the fest last year.
The festival’s passion for film is driven by the students and the faculty of the Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad), who run the event.
“Scad is the festival,” says president and founder Paula Wallace.

After a record number of entries, Australians in Film announced Charmaine Bingwa as the winner of this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship.
The Australian/Zimbabwean actor is the first woman of color to be honored with the scholarship and the 10th winner of the award which was founded five months after Ledger’s death. The scholarship honors Ledger’s legacy and is awarded to an actor who exhibits distinctive and unique potential. It offers assistance for young and emerging Australian actors to kick-start their careers, break into Hollywood or train internationally.
“I’m completely taken aback and so honored to be 2018’s winner of the Heath Ledger Scholarship,” said Bingwa after receiving the award. “I heard the other day someone say that the most powerful currency you have is the impact you have on other people and I think Heath epitomizes that. Heath personally taught me what the power of a performance can do.

Exclusive: It was a female director who gave the industry and Warner Bros the highest overall summer film last year with $412.5 million at the domestic box office and provided the studio the wind to sail past Disney as the first to win the $2 billion domestic box office race. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman made the industry sit up and take notice when the Superhero origin film opened to $103.2M domestically and $228M internationally. It was one of only three films last year the studio released from female directors. The others were Denise Di Novi’s Unforgettable and Stella Meghie’s Everything, Everything (an MGM co-production). New Line had zero, but these numbers are changing, and for the better.

hen the first “Twilight” movie premiered at Comic-Con in 2009, it spawned protests. Multiple fans wandered the San Diego Convention Center holding signs with captions such as “Twilight has ruined Comic-Con!” One attendee, when asked by L.A. Weekly if his characterization of “Twilight” fans as “screeching girls” was sexist, countered that “girls have been making fun of fanboys for years, calling them nerdy and smelly.”
The inclusion of the “Twilight” films was a “watershed” for the convention, according to science-fiction writer Charlie Jane Anders.
“All of a sudden there were all these female fans who showed up for ‘Twilight’ who would actually get in line for Hall H,” says Anders, co-founder of the website io9. “But the amazing thing was that even after there were no more ‘Twilight’ movies, it felt like the attendees never went back to the way they had been. The 2018 Outfest Film Festival, the largest Lgbtq film festival in Los Angeles, will feature its most inclusive lineup of filmmakers with narrative and documentary features that reflect a growing sense of activism in the Trump era.
Organizers of Outfest, which which kicks off Thursday night, are celebrating a record number of entries this year by filmmakers of color, women and transgender directors. Two-thirds of films screening at the festival are from these underrepresented groups, a new milestone, said Outfest director of programming Lucy Mukerjee. Last year, 50% of the films at the festival were directed by women.
Mukerjee explained that it has become imperative for Outfest to be more inclusive and intersectional, reflecting not just one narrow view of the Lgbtq community.
“Putting the creative visions of women and people of color and transgender directors on the same plane as cisgender, white directors felt like the only logical and ethical thing to do,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited a record number of new members, extending invites to 928 people.
The Academy topped last year’s record of 774 new members. It invited 683 members in 2016 and 322 in 2015, which were also record numbers.
The expansion of Academy membership to more than 9,200 stems from an ongoing effort to diversify its ranks following uproar over the lack of African-American nominees in 2015 and 2016, which culminated in 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Two weeks after the widely criticized nominations were announced, AMPAS announced a goal to double the number of women and diverse members of the Academy by 2020.
If all the 2018 invitees accept, the overall membership would be 9,226.
Monday’s invitations, if accepted, will result in 38% of the Oscars’ governing body’s new class being comprised of people of color, increasing their representation from 13% in 2017 to 16%.
Meanwhile, the new class is 49% female, boosting the total representation of women...

The DC Extended Universe (Dceu) has seen its fair share of critical misfires, from “Batman v. Superman” to “Suicide Squad” and “Justice League,” but all hope isn’t lost. During an appearance on Kevin Smith’s podcast “Fat Man on Batman,” Marvel Cinematic Universe screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus offered their advice on how the Dceu can be saved, and it turns out less is more when it comes to building a gigantic movie universe.

Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot has completed a deal with Universal Pictures to join the action heist thriller Red Notice alongside Dwayne Johnson.
Gadot is said to be playing the character of a brilliant and mysterious figure in the art world. The storyline is being kept a secret for the time being but it is said to follow an Interpol agent (we’re guessing this could be Johnson’s character) who is after the most wanted art thief in the world. Word is there is yet to be a third male lead yet to be cast.
Rawson Marshall Thurber will take the helm on the film on his own original script, reuniting him with Johnson for the third time. The pair have previously worked on Central Intelligence and more recently, Skyscraper.

Pity poor Luke Evans at the premiere of Clash of The Titans (2010). As Apollo, half brother of Perseus, Evans had scored himself a major part in a huge Hollywood blockbuster. Ten years treading the boards in the West End building up a reputation as a charismatic leading man with rich Welsh baritone were about to pay off.
Imagine the crushing disappointment on the night to find out that all his scenes, bar one had been cut – several scenes of Evans dressed like a Quality Street toffee are available to watch on YouTube. To make matters worse, he had to stay and watch the rest of the film, a tortuous prospect for anyone.
For a while that seemed to be the story of Luke Evans’s life: close but no cigar. He scored parts in big movies with high expectations that went nowhere (Immortals) and franchises that foundered on the first attempt (Robin Hood,...

Inclusion rider and Marvel blockbuster’s international performance dominate conversation as Hollywood looks to future.
The $1bn global success of Black Panther has put a cat among the pigeons, silencing the naysayers who argued films with a black cast do not perform internationally, encouraged diversity advocates, and ignited an explosion of interest in Hollywood’s favourite new hashtag.
Inclusion rider
The talk of the town is the inclusion rider. The pro-diversity notion coined by a Us academic and famously uttered by Frances McDormand at the end of her Oscar acceptance speech has already been the subject of several public proclamations.

Throughout the legacy of cinema, there have been phenomena that have just caught fire with the audience and proved to be 24-carat box office gold. Star Wars, James Bond, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Transformers, the list goes on and on. However, among all these hit franchises and brands (often based on a previously existing property), arguably one of the most curious is Fifty Shades, the erotic drama/thriller franchise based on the highly successful if polarising book series by E. L. James. Now, as we arrive at the end of this trilogy, is Fifty Shades Freed a conclusion the feverish fanbase deserves or is it just further punishment? Well, what do you think?
This final instalment sees Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) tie the knot and adapt to a more standard life, outside of their Bdsm kinks, as husband and wife. Though a dark reminder of...

After its successful run in Paris, France, DC Entertainment along with Warner Bros. Consumer Products in collaboration with Art Ludique-Le Musee bring the unique history of DC superheroes to London’s O2 with the DC Exhibition: Dawn of Super Heroes.
We were privileged enough to get a first look around the exhibition which includes more than 200 original comic pages stemming from its very creation in 1938 to 45 original costumes, models and props used in the films up to the present day, including Justice League before it opens to the public on February 23rd.
If you are expecting an exhibition along the lines of the previous Star Wars Identities in some ways, you will not be disappointed. The walk-through tour, which is guided by a hand-held listening device, doesn’t have the same level of interaction or as an extensive array of costumes or artwork on display, making this...

Nearly a year after signing on with Warner Bros. to write and possibly direct DC’s Batgirl for the studio, Joss Whedon has thrown in the towel and walked away from the project.
Despite the many comic books at his disposal where he could have taken his inspiration, Whedon just couldn’t come up with a viable story for the female lead superhero. Maybe the pressure to emulate Patty Jenkins Wonder Women was a bit too much for him to live up to, the tepid reaction to Justice League, which he completed following Zack Snyder’s departure, may also have added to the decision.

Up until fairly recently, the news that Joss Whedon was making a “Batgirl” movie would have been met with almost universal glee from his large fandom. With nerd credentials forged in the fires of his cult favorite series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Firefly,” then wielded with the same confidence of Thor’s mighty Mjölnir to make “The Avengers” a box office smash, Whedon had become enough of a cult figure in pop culture where getting to see his witty spin on another beloved character would be fun.
That said, it’s the year 2018, and after learning on Thursday that Whedon would no longer be making “Batgirl,” it’s hard not to be glad that he’s gone.
It’s a two-part issue, one that reflects both Whedon’s past and the present state of the industry. For one thing, there are elements of Whedon’s series, it’s sad to say,...
