Abu Dhabi Film Festival 2013, to be held from October 24-November 2, will celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema by screening a select programme of five Indian films in a special sidebar.
Referred to by some as “India’s Orson Welles”, Guru Dutt is regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time. Time’s All Time 100 Best Movies (2005) lists two of Guru Dutt’s films. Adff will screen one of them, Eternal Thirst (Pyaasa), the story of a poet struggling to be recognised in post-independence India.
Ritwak Ghatak’s 1965 neorealist film The Golden Thread (Subarnarekha) will also screen as part of the programme. Although Ghatak was not widely recognised at the time of his death, Ghatak’s work has been celebrated posthumously and his impact on other filmmakers, such as Mani Kaul, has been widely recognised. In Two Minds (Duvidha), which was directed by Ghatak’s student Mani Kaul in 1973, will also be screened.

It has been a couple of days since I returned from my pilgrimage-like trip to the 9th Bring Your Own Film Festival at Puri, Odisha. Sea and cinema makes a deadly potion, whose hangover ensures that for the rest of my life, I’ll be in Puri every second last week of February. Add to that a bunch of crazy, carefree people who are singing, laughing and hooting away to glory for no apparent reason, for five days at a stretch, in a world that can’t stop counting fingers. Good food, cheap alcohol, legal grass and a free beach on which musicians, poets, filmmakers, painters, sculptors, dancers let go of all that is tangible and release their medium of expression. Puri turns paradise indeed, as my imageries of the Beat Generation come alive.

Influential Indian film-maker admired in European arthouses
Those who think of Indian cinema as the glitz of Bollywood on the one hand and the eloquent classicism of Satyajit Ray on the other miss a third important strand, manifested best by the radical director Mani Kaul, who has died from cancer aged 66. Kaul was a totally uncompromising film-maker who never sought popularity but pursued his own concerns, influenced by Ritwik Ghatak, his Bengali teacher and a great director in his own right, and by Robert Bresson and Andrei Tarkovsky among the foreign giants of the cinema.
