X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

The Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett-produced Dcau has had many shows and films that have attained the status of modern classics. Shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Teen Titans have been classics in the animated TV realm for a generation while the films have constantly been well-received.
While Marvel achieved many milestones through their live-action MCU, they seem to be way behind their DC counterparts. Only a few shows with their most profitable IP such as X-Men and Spider-Man have fared well with audiences. Alan Burnett, who served as a co-producer and writer on many Dcau shows and films reportedly has the reason why.

Jason Momoa belongs to a small group of absolutely massive actors who are also genuinely funny as hell, like John Cena and Alan Ritchson. In some of his best roles, Momoa can be charismatic and funny, but also intimidating and a strong physical presence on screen. It's why he works great in "The Bad Batch" and as Aquaman, why he stole every scene he's in as Duncan Idaho in "Dune," and why Dante Reyes is one of the best "Fast & Furious" villains ever.
And yet, this is Hollywood, so of course Momoa was mostly seen as just a big scary dude after his breakthrough role in "Game of Thrones." Sure, audiences love bad guys, but they don't necessarily root for them. So it came as a big surprise when, in 2014, Momoa was cast as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe.

I’m pretty lucky; I have lived through some major pop culture events: the Tim Burton Batman films changed comic book media, the birth of Image comics, seeing how Star Trek The Next Generation birthed a new fandom, etc. But one of the biggest events was seeing how animation wouldin a few short years change forever. The Simpsons is one example of how cartoons started to break new ground. Yet, there was one cartoon that broke the world of American animation. It was gross, it was crass, it was unlike anything we had ever seen. If the Simpsons were an explosion, Ren & Stimpy were the atomic bomb. Today many popular cartoons can all trace their origins back to an insane Chihuahua and a stupid big-nosed cat. It is undeniable Ren & Stimpy changed the face of animation. However, the story behind the show’s genesis is full of rebellion,...

Jimmy Weldon, a 1940s-era disc jockey and later kids TV host and voice actor whose ability to mimic a Donald Duck-like quacking voice led to his signature portrayal of a classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon duckling named Yakky Doodle, died July 6 in Paso Robles, California. He was 99.
Weldon, a Texas native born Ivy Laverne Shinn, was a World War II vet who had participated in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp when, after his military service, he sought work in radio, landing a job at a Chickasha, Oklahoma, station. It was there he began using the Donal Duck impression he’d been honing for years, turning the routine into a character named Webster Webfoot.
The character caught on with listeners and within a few years led to Dallas kids TV show called The Webster Webfoot Show, featuring Weldon operating a baseball-capped duck puppet.

This article contains major spoilers for The Flash.
Holy revolving door, Batman! The Caped Crusader has been portrayed by more actors on the big screen than any other superhero in history. Most of them have lasted for just one film. After The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale became the first man to have played Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego more than twice on the silver screen. He didn’t have much competition – Michael Keaton was the only other actor to reprise the role at the time.
But Ben Affleck has now beat Bale for appearances as Batman on the big screen due to his return in The Flash movie, making that fourth time Affleck has donned the cape and cowl. Sure, these aren’t movies starring the Caped Crusader but they still count! Meanwhile, Keaton ties Bale for three appearances, with a much heftier role in The Flash than Affleck.

"Batman: The Animated Series" is one of the crowning achievements of American animation. To this day, it's remembered for its atmospheric art design (homaging Fleischer Studios' Superman cartoons) and mature storytelling — even if it never forgot its young target audience along the way. The series' star, the late, legendary Kevin Conroy, is the definitive voice of the Dark Knight for a generation, while Harley Quinn, who was created for the series, has become the most successful DC Comics character who didn't originate in the comics.
The series' success meant its creative team shaped Batman in animation for the next decade. In 1993, the series led to the theatrical film, "Mask of the Phantasm," which took everything great about the series and pushed it further. While "Batman: The Animated Series" ended in 1995, it became only the first installment in the DC Animated Universe, which culminated wiith "Justice League Unlimited," which ran from...

Leo D. Sullivan, the groundbreaking Black animator who contributed to the iconic opening for Soul Train and to cartoons featuring Fat Albert, Transformers and My Little Pony during his 50-year-plus career, has died. He was 82.
Sullivan died Saturday of heart failure at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, his wife, Ethelyn, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The Emmy-winning Sullivan also was a writer, producer, director, layout artist and storyboard artist at studios including Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., Filmation, DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, Dic Entertainment and Marvel Productions.
He and onetime Disney animator Floyd Norman were among the co-founders of Vignette Films in the 1960s. Their company produced educational films about such Black heroes as George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington and was behind a 1969 Bill Cosby special, Hey! Hey! Hey! One reason that "Batman: The Animated Series" was and remains so beloved was how it embraced case-of-the-week storytelling. This was perfect for showcasing all the different corners and characters that make up the wild world of Gotham City. Such a large cast of characters meant that the series brought in a lot of actors; voice director Andrea Romano sought actors of all stripes for parts big and small. On the Popcorn & Shield podcast, the late Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) described the casting process as thus:
"They were really looking for actors, rather than just voice people. They cast a really wide net. So there were TV people, film people, stage people. Every week going in it was like going to summer camp, the people I got to work with."
Series co-creator Bruce Timm, also being interviewed, agreed with Conroy's sentiment. "Every week there was always some special, you know,...

30 years after its premiere, "Batman: The Animated Series" still undoubtedly serves as the blueprint for adapting the Caped Crusader. Created by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, the show took the source material seriously to deliver a Batman that wrestled with his unrelenting search for vengeance. A neo-noir aesthetic filled every frame to the brim with dramatic undertones befitting of the Dark Knight. In contrast to other cartoons, "Batman: The Animated Series" drenched Batman and his enemies in high-contrast lighting to emphasize the darker nature of the project. In fact, it was an art style that proved to be initially overwhelming for the voice actor under the cowl.
It's no secret that the late Kevin Conroy, whose legacy at the Dark Knight stretches far past "The Animated Series," has become the definitive voice of Batman across all mediums. Many have tried their hand at voicing the character, but the legendary performer remains the unparalleled favorite.

Growing up in the 1970s, comic book readers didn’t have a lot in the way of extensions of their favorite characters. There was the occasional novel and ABC’s Super Friends, but really, little else. As a result, getting new stories or new versions of stories on an album featuring your favorite heroes seemed like manna from Heaven.
Power Records or Peter Pan Records filled that gap, beginning in the early 1970s and petering out in the early 1980s. They may be best remembered for the wonderful art produced for the album covers by Continuity Studios, the outfit run by Neal Adams and (briefly) Dick Giordano. They featured familiar vocal talent and the stories weren’t half bad. They were successful enough that their thirty or so releases were repackaged time and again, eventually eschewing vinyl for cassette tapes to retain the audience.

HBO Max has scrapped its plans for a live-action Wonder Twins film, based on the DC characters of the same name, Deadline can confirm.
The news comes only about a month after it was announced that Kj Apa and Isabel May had been tapped to play shape-shifters Zan and Jayna. Black Adam scribe Adam Sztykiel had been tasked with directing the film; it would have marked his feature debut. While its plot had been kept under wraps, it would have followed the pair of alien siblings from planet Exxor, first introduced in the 1977 animated series The All-New Super Friends Hour from Hanna-Barbera, who were later seen in The World’s Greatest Super Friends, Super Friends and Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey were set to produce for Temple Hill, with production scheduled to begin in Atlanta this summer.

Warner Bros. is making a Wonder Twins movie for HBO Max. Yes, you read that right, the Wonder Twins. As in, the two purple-clad alien teenagers who can shapeshift when they touch hands and shout “Wonder Twin powers, activate!” Of course, their shapeshifting is somewhat limited as Jayna can only transform into animals and Zan can become water…as in liquid, solid, or vapor. Basically, they’re just useful enough to be the equivalent of interns with the Justice League without overshadowing any of their more traditionally superheroic teammates.
They seem like an unlikely pair of candidates for a superhero movie, don’t they? Adam Sztykiel is writing and directing a film that will go directly to HBO Max, and the studio has tapped Kj Apa (Riverdale) and Isabel May (1883) to play Zan and Jayna. For ’80s kids, the Wonder Twins are almost synonymous with their early experiences with the DC Universe.

Love was in the air for this week’s Supergirl, which was aptly titled “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.”
Lex Luthor, who is far from a romantic hero, made his best efforts to woo Nxyly after falling in love with her in the future. He returned to inform her that she dies, and he can help her avoid that fate if they work together. However, the fifth-dimensional imp was not fond of men who send women to the Phantom Zone, and she promptly shut him down.

DC's "League of Super Pets", a new animated feature based on DC Comics' family of crime-fighting animals, is now targeting a May 20, 2022 release, directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, that originated as a children's series from Capstone Publishers and a series of shorts as part of Cartoon Network's' DC Nation':

We always knew Supergirl‘s Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) was a force to be reckoned with, but an actual witch? Ok, we’re listening! In the past few weeks, our favorite Luthor has been investigating her late biological mother’s past and come up with some interesting information about Mama Walsh. Mostly that she was part of a coven up in Newfoundland that had some serious magical chops. Unfortunately for the abusive dude they accidentally offed, those powers were stronger than the ladies realized. But for the Super Friends, the abilities Lena can access by accepting her legacy could be the thing that helps them finally stop evil imp Nyxly (Peta Sergeant). After all, only magic can beat magic. The CW In this exclusive clip from the September 28 episode, “The Gauntlet,” Lena is seen communicating with Vita, a blast from the show’s past— one of the dark priestesses who...

Mr. Mxyzptlk returns on “Supergirl” this week and yes, he will break out into song. It’s not another musical episode for the series, though. Thomas Lennon is showing off his pipes in a “Mxy in the Middle” solo — although he sure would have loved to sing with Supergirl herself.
First, let’s refresh on why he’s here to begin with. After unwittingly giving Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) her powers back, Kara (Melissa Benoist) is lured back to the Ormfell only to watch the imp destroy it while Kara is trapped in ice. As Nyxly so devilishly puts it, “You’re bound by magic now. And only magic can beat magic.” Luckily, Kara knows just the person to help her in this case.
Re-enter: Mr. Mxyzptlk. He has a rather…tumultuous history with Nyxly, but the good news is he can give the Super Friends the 4-1-1. And because he’s Mxy,...

One should never trust an imp, right?
Nyxly returned on Supergirl Season 6 Episode 9, and this time she used her powers of deception to take advantage of Nia's vulnerable state. Meanwhile, Kelly decided to take on a bigger role in the group of Super Friends.
"Dream Weaver" was an episode that we have been begging Supergirl for, one that highlighted two characters who have been pushed to the background for far too long. This hour gave us hope for the remainder of Supergirl Season 6.
Nia has been struggling with the loss of her mother and how to control and understand her powers for quite some time now.
To be honest, we have been just as confused as Nia has been regarding the extent of her abilities as Dreamer.
Obviously, she is very powerful, but we have an inkling that there are still powers that she hasn't even begun to tap into.

If the first seven episodes of the final season of “Supergirl” showed us anything, it’s that Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) was always meant to be part of the Super Friends. The good news is she’s here now, and thanks to a classic older sister pep talk from Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Lena isn’t going anywhere. And now that Kara’s been rescued, Lena will have her best friend back — with no drama attached, according to the showrunners.
“We’re looking at better days,” showrunner Robert Rovner told TheWrap in April. “Lena apologized to Kara in the season opener, and she goes about the first part of the season making amends for that, and is vital to the team in terms of helping them get Supergirl back. And so once Supergirl’s back, it’s their friendship, and [Lena’s] part of the team.

For a brand as beloved as Masters of the Universe, the franchise sure seems to have fallen on tough times lately. He-Man himself hasn’t had an animated series of his own since an excellent 2002 reboot stalled after two seasons. There have been endless attempts to get a new live-action movie out of the gate over the last decade or more. And ol’ Prince Adam has been upstaged by his twin sister Adora, recently the subject of Netflix’s excellent She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, arguably the best adaptation of elements of the MoTU world to ever hit the screen.
She-Ra prided itself on subverting expectations, from the character designs and animation style to its studied unwillingness to ride on He-Man’s coattails and its wonderful commitment to representation and diversity. Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation, on the other hand, has the stated purpose of being a...

With 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie having grossed over $311 million worldwide, building on the block toy franchise’s cinematic success, a sequel seemed like a no-brainer for studio Warner Bros. However, external constraints intervened when Universal Pictures landed an exclusive deal for the rights; a twist of fate that essentially canceled the sequel in the midst of its development. Consequently, director Chris McKay’s most recent—unfortunately inauspicious—update on that front also came with intriguingly bittersweet plot details.
How’s this for a pitch for The Lego Batman Movie 2? A dramatic ordeal resembling themes from The Godfather Part II and Boogie Nights teaches Batman the value of friendship. Of course, those rather random sources of inspiration—from a dour early 1970s-era epic and 70s-nostalgic 1990s cinematic caricature—may seem like a puzzling plot structure for the kid-friendly animated film franchise, but there was a method to the apparent madness,...

Another episode, another missed opportunity to save Kara in both worlds.
The Super Friends' Phantom problem grew so far out of control on Supergirl Season 6 Episode 4 that they needed to focus all of their efforts on stopping it. And a betrayal in the Phantom Zone lead to Kara destroying her only way home.
The hour was mostly filler, which is a bit disappointing for a final season. However, it was still more intriguing than past episodes as it had great action and well-crafted character moments.
Plus, it was the first time Lex Luthor wasn't featured, which is always a win in my book.
The Phantom Zone really hasn't been paid its dues on Supergirl Season 6, until "Lost Souls."
The season's story, so far, has mostly taken place in National City with the Super Friends trying to save Kara from their end.

After the season premiere of “Supergirl” sent Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) to the Phantom Zone, things have been a bit hectic for the Super Friends back in National City. While they desperately try to bring her back, Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), Sentinel (Chyler Leigh), Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Dreamer (Nicole Maines) have taken over hero duties, with Dreamer pulling double time, also covering for Kara at CatCo as just regular Nia Nal.
It’s a stressful time, and things may not be getting better any time soon — particularly for Nia. In ranking the Super Friends based on how badly they need therapy, Azie Tesfai, who plays Kelly Olsen on “Supergirl,” put Nia in the top three, only behind Kara and Lena (Katie McGrath), citing her reasoning as Nia having a lot going on in the final season of “Supergirl.” At that, Nicole Maines isn’t all that surprised.

Supergirl is coming to an end after six seasons, and we’ll soon be saying goodbye to Kara Danvers and the rest of the Super Friends for good. As we head into the final season, showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller say they’re working on bringing a few familiar characters back to National City before the CW series wraps.

Here she comes to save the day: The final season of “Supergirl” is soaring to The CW sooner than expected.
Well, at least the first half of it is.
Due to Covid-19 production shutdowns earlier this season on freshman series “Superman & Lois,” Season 6-a of “Supergirl” will begin airing on March 30, The CW said on Friday. “Supergirl” will wrap up in late summer.
It was previously announced that “Supergirl” would conclude at some point later in 2021. And when The CW released its spring premiere dates earlier this year, the Melissa Benoist-led series was nowhere to be found.
This call for “Supergirl” to help out her fellow Kryptonian is a new one, a person with knowledge of the scheduling decision told TheWrap.

On Sept. 28, 1985 the world got a glimpse of what could have been a very different Batman animated series. The fourth episode of that year’s incarnation of Hanna-Barbera’s long running Super Friends animated series (Super Powers: Galactic Guardians) is “The Fear.” Unlike previous episodes, it wasn’t focused on the Justice League and their ongoing battle against cosmic forces of evil, but instead was firmly grounded in Gotham City and a battle between Batman and the Scarecrow.
Galactic Guardians was the eighth and final season of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved Super Friends franchise, and it was a notable departure from what came before. Galactic Guardians stories were more in keeping with DC Comics of the day, the animation style drew heavily on the work of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, the artist behind the DC Comics Style Guide of the era, and for the second season in a row, the show leaned...

Kevin Smith is taking another crack at “The Green Hornet.”
Smith, who already has a “Green Hornet” comic book series based on the un-produced feature screenplay he was hired to write by Miramax under his belt, is developing an animated version of “Green Hornet” with kids content producer WildBrain.
The new series will be targeted at a family audience, while retaining many elements from the comics, including the titular character’s high-tech car, the “Black Beauty.”
Set in contemporary times, the new series will follow the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato – as they partner to battle crime in Century City.
“It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters!

Supergirl Season 5 showed potential with the promise of Leviathan and the intriguing, yet predictable, fight between Kara and Lena. But as the episodes aired, it was clear that the show was struggling to figure what story it was trying to tell.
Was it Lena's falling out with Kara? The rise of Leviathan? Malefic's revenge? The dangers of technology?
A lot was going on all at once, and it was difficult for the viewers to keep up. And then Crisis happened, making the story even more jumbled with the reintroduction of Lex.
It was not all bad, though, as we saw Kara grow as a character, the incredible complexity of newcomer Andrea, and so much more.
Best Episode
Hands down, the best episode of the season has to go to Supergirl Season 5 Episode 19. The makeshift finale showed more progress for the characters in just that one episode than it had all season.

Darkseid is coming to HBO Max’s Justice League Snyder Cut, as revealed by Zack Snyder himself.
While the idea that Darkseid was originally slated to appear in Snyder’s Justice League has been known since the era of the film’s production, the director has provided definitive confirmation of the character’s Snyder Cut restoration with a teaser image of his heretofore missing version of the despot himself in all his destructive glory.

Supergirl had just one episode left to get the show back on track to its roots, and it somehow did just that.
Supergirl Season 5 Episode 19 was a jam-packed hour of action, heart-to-hearts, revelations, hope, and everything that makes Supergirl, Supergirl.
There were conclusions to a lot of the storylines that filled Supergirl Season 5, but unfortunately, there is one last loose end to tie up. And if the past has shown us anything, it is that he doesn't go down easy.
Lex has been a nuisance since he returned during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, and he has always been five steps ahead of Supergirl.
After all the wins Kara and the Super Friends procured during the season's final hour, one might have thought that they would have caught up to Lex. They would be wrong, though.
You know I pride myself on seeing things. Connections where others only see coincidence.

Big, amazing fights at the Deo, unearthing new information about new villains, powerful women working together, Kara awkwardly trying to hide her secret, forgiveness, and so on.
All of this was featured on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 18, a dynamic episode that showed what the superhero show could do when it is at its best.
Plus, we finally got the one thing we have been waiting for since Supergirl Season 5 Episode 1.
Lena has come to her senses and recognized her wrongdoings since she discovered that Kara was Supergirl.
While Kara did make mistakes of her own when it came to telling Lena her secret, because a television show would not be interesting if the main character were perfect, it was high time for Lena to forgive and move on.
I have made a terrible mistake. I was hurt. I was so hurt. And I...

For an episode chock full of exposition, Supergirl somehow pulled it off.
The truth behind Lex's motives after Crisis and how he came to be involved with Leviathan came to light on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 17.
And while Lex's reasons behind all of his actions post-Crisis were predictable, it was amazing watching Lex work and manipulate so many people. He is one of the best villains Supergirl has ever had.
However, it feels like Leviathan never got the chance to be great.
Lex Luthor has only ever wanted two things in his life -- world domination and eradicating all the Kryptonians.
Before Crisis, these two wants drove his every move, and his obsession with them got in the way of his success. For a brilliant man, Lex was reckless, hot-headed, and ultimately a hubristic Luthor.
I didn't just save the world, I made a new world.

If I told you to name the Big Bad of Supergirl Season 5 off the top of your head, who would you say?
Multiple people come to mind, ranging from Leviathan to Lena. But wasn't the main villain supposed to be Andrea, better known as Acrata?
It was made pretty clear on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 6 that that was not the case, which was a nice surprise, but also led to a whole lot of confusion as to what the heck this season was trying to be.
Let's start at the beginning. Does anyone else remember that Malefic was a pretty prominent evil that the Super Friends had to take on during this season's first few episodes?
He wanted to take them down, but then he forgave J'onn, his brother, and jetted off to Mars to help M'gann in the civil war.
Of course, this was all revealed to be some kind...

"DC Super Pets", a new animated feature based on DC Comics' family of crime-fighting animals, is targeting a May 21, 2021 release, directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, that originated as a children's series from Capstone Publishers and a series of shorts as part of Cartoon Network's' DC Nation':
The 'Super Pets', debuted with 'Krypto' the superdog in DC's "Adventure" #210 (1955).
'The Legion of Super-Pets' debuted in "Adventure Comics" #293 (1962).
The original Legion roster included Krypto, 'Comet' the superhorse, 'Streaky' the supercat, 'Beppo' the supermonkey and 'shape-shifter' 'Proty II'.
Significant appearances include "Adventure" #322 (July 1964) when 'Proty II' is initiated into the team and "Adventure" #343 (April 1966), when the pets help the 'Legion of Super-Heroes' battle the 'Luck Lords'.
"Adventure" #364 (January 1968) was titled, "The Revolt of the Super-Pets!"
The team rarely appeared after the 'Silver Age' except for Krypto who became a supporting character in several "Superman" titles.

It looks as if Lena will not be taking advantage of Kara's offer of peace.
After many episodes working on Non Nocere, Lena has finally shown progress with her experiment on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 14, and Kara is unlikely to be very happy about that.
But after seeing the results of Lena's project, is what she is trying to accomplish all that bad? Or is it the Lex of it all making everyone cringe?
It is shocking that after a seemingly world-changing confrontation on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 13, Lena did not dwell on her options.
Kara gave her an ultimatum, and Lena quite obviously does not care one bit.
But there was not even a mention about it from Kara, who spent the entirety of the 100th episode stressing over her friendship with Lena.
Fear is the only emotion I've known for most of my life, but then you came along and I finally felt hope.
