The legal purchasing age in France was raised from 16 to 18 in 2009. Traditionally, IDs are rarely asked for as proof of age. France does not have a legally spelled out consumption age, so families, both at home and in public restaurants will all drink together. Kids over a certain age will be served wine at dinner like everyone else at the table, unless a parent objects. At NYE celebrations and other special occasions, kids will drink champagne along with the adults. Selling alcohol to a minor (ie under 18 since 2009) is illegal and the proprietor can be fined. This movie is from 1971 when 16 was the standard.
