Stars: Keni Bounds, Jeff Buchwald, Meredith Mohler, Lewis Hines, Jo-Ann Robinson | Written and Directed by Christopher Wesley Moore
Children of Sin is the new film from writer/director/actor Christopher Wesley Moore and like his previous films Blessed Are the Children, Stranger Among the Living, and Triggered, (not to be confused with the South African film Triggered) it’s a horror film with a strong dose of religious and social commentary. His previous films have managed to walk the line between delivering scares and delivering their message, can he keep that steak going here?
Tammy (Keni Bounds; Blessed Are the Children) is marrying Robbie. This doesn’t sit well with her children Emma and Jackson (Lewis Hines; Mimi: Blood Thicker Than Water). Maybe because he’s a religious zealot who demands total obedience and finds sin in everyone but himself. And he doesn’t consider making advances on his own stepdaughter as sinful.

Hello, dear readers! We’re back with a brand-new batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases that will be out this Tuesday. One of my favorite films of 2021, Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections is being released on various formats this week, and two other great 2021 releases—Agnes and Silent—are headed to both Blu-ray and DVD as well. Dario Argento’s Phenomena is getting the 4K treatment courtesy of the fine fiends over at Synapse Films, and Full Moon is showing some love to a pair of cult films—Island of the Fishmen and Mansion of the Doomed—that fans will undoubtedly want to check out.
Other genre home media releases for March 8th include Monster From Green Hell: Special Edition, 13 Fanboy, The Legend of La Llorona, Video Psycho, Night of Doom, and the final season of The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

I’ll keep it simple: John Carpenter is my favorite director, and has been since I grasped the concept of what a director did. His run from 1976 to 1988 is unparalleled in my opinion; from the eerie siege of Assault on Precinct 13 to They Live’s way too prescient take on governmental oppression, there’s nary a stinker in the bunch. But within this stellar run he made a couple of turns towards the small screen, where he was able to hone his craft under the duress of tight schedules and restrictive content. And since this is a horror column we won’t be talking about the excellent Elvis (1979) but rather his tip of the hat to Hitchcock, Someone’s Watching Me! (1978), a suspenseful tale of voyeurism that’s a more than solid lead in to Halloween.

Curtis Harrington’s Ruby (1977) is a perfect example of what I like to call a or something film, to wit: Piper Laurie follows up her Academy Award nominated turn in Carrie (’76) to headline as a former gun moll haunted by her dead ex while she runs a drive-in and her 16 year old becomes possessed by said dead ex. Or something. Fractured and scattered but a whole lot of fun, Ruby is positively littered with or something’s and I kind of love it for that.
Released by Dimension Pictures in late June, Ruby was a big hit with audiences, returning $16 million off of a sub million dollar budget. This was clearly the Carrie effect; I remember the trailer playing on TV at the time, and my wee mind was blown by the final image – a woman in a red dress being dragged underwater. For a kid with an early thirst for horror,...

A few years ago, in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the death of influential film critic Pauline Kael, I wrote the following:
“I think (Kael) did a lot to expose the truth… that directors, writers and actors who often work awfully close to the surface may still have subterranean levels of achievement or purpose or commentary that they themselves may be least qualified to articulate. It’s what’s behind her disdain for Antonioni’s pontificating at the Cannes film festival; it’s what behind the high percentage of uselessness of proliferating DVD commentaries in which we get to hear every dull anecdote, redundant explication of plot development and any other inanity that strikes the director of the latest Jennifer Aniston rom-com to blurt out breathlessly; and it is what’s behind a director like Eli Roth, who tailors the subtext of something like Hostel Part II almost as...

Welcome to HumanSide, the podcast that looks at the human side of pop culture. This episode offers an early peek at Chicago's own Music Box Theatre 70mm Film Festival, taking place February 19 to March 10. I also review a couple of surreal classics on Blu-ray from Scream Factory. Trust me, if you love weird movies, Sonny Boy and Blood and Lace deserve your attention. I also look at the Criterion Collection upgrade of one of my favorite noir films, Night and the City, by the great Jules Dassin. Lastly, HumanSide episode 2 offers an interview with director Heath Cozens about his often humorous but ultimately moving documentary Doglegs, which tells the story of disabled Japanese wrestlers grappling with able bodied opponents in a bid for societal and self-respect.You can listen to the...

The origin of the slasher movie has always been of great interest to horror fans, who have long sought to pinpoint the film that launched one of horror’s most popular and enduring subgenres. For years, it was assumed that John Carpenter’s Halloween kicked off the movement, though in recent years that opinion has been widely revised to consider Bob Clark’s Black Christmas as patient zero. Now, Scream Factory has helped dig up 1971’s Blood and Lace, a movie that suggests the origins of the slasher film as we know it began three years before Black Christmas.
Opening with an extended Pov sequence seen through the eyes of a killer as a sleeping couple is murdered with a hammer (seven years before Halloween would open in similar fashion, though still 11 years after Peeping Tom), the movie eventually follows Ellie Masters (Melodie Patterson), daughter of the murdered couple, who...

A Christmas Horror Story (Rlj Entertainment, Blu-ray & DVD)

An orphanage becomes a living nightmare for young Ellie Masters (Melody Patterson) in 1971's Blood and Lace, coming out on a Blu-ray / DVD combo pack November 24th from Scream Factory. Ahead of the film's new home media release, we have high-definition clips as well as the film's trailer.
Blood and Lace Blu-ray / DVD: "After her mother’s brutal murder at the hands of a hammer-wielding maniac, teenaged Ellie Masters (Melody Patterson) is suddenly orphaned. She is sent to a home for children run by the enigmatic Mrs. Deere (Gloria Grahame, a 1952 Best Supporting Actress Academy Award® winner for her role in The Bad and The Beautiful), in spite of the concern that Ellie will be the newest target of her mother’s killer. But as terror strikes again and again, it becomes unclear who might be the bigger threat to Ellie’s life: the mysterious murderer with a hammer…or her sadistic new caretaker.

Shock reviews the ultra-sleazy 1971 horror film Blood And Lace on Blu-ray. In the annals of PG rated horror films, director Philip Gilbert’s sordid Aip-released 1971 psychodrama Blood And Lace kind of stands alone. No, there’s no explicit sex or nudity, nor is the violence particularly graphic and certainly, nary a curse word is uttered.…

Last week's MPAA bulletin had two titles and both were notable releases, this week has nine titles and only one of them really moves the dial... at all. That one being Stonewall, which I'm sure most people drooling over Roland Emmerich's current project, Independence Day: Resurgence, forgot all about. Well, if you're in that camp, let me remind you. Stonewall is a drama centered on the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York, an event widely considered the starting point for the modern gay civil rights movement. The movie stars Jeremy Irvine, Caleb Landry Jones, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman, Joey King and Karl Glusman. Here's the synopsis: Kicked out of his own home, young Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) flees to NY, leaving behind his beloved sister (Joey King). Homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the watering hole of the local drag queens,...

The shocking 1971 thriller Blood And Lace (not to be confused with Mario Bava’s similarly titled Blood And Black Lace from 1964) opens with a bloody hammer murder shot from the point of view of the killer that predates an almost identical opening to John Carpenter’s Halloween by 6 years. The plot of Blood And Lace involves murder, pedophilia, incest, and a freezer full of child corpses. And it was rated PG! (more accurately Gp, the 1971 equivalent). An irresistible mix of bad psychodrama, overacting, and gratuitous gore, Blood And Lace is a disturbing film of genuine misanthropy, bereft of humanity on any level and it’s hard to believe that children in 1971 were allowed into movie theatres showing it. It’s also hard to believe that it is Not available on DVD.
