Ever since becoming one of the biggest pop stars in recent history, Ariana Grande hasn’t spent much time showing off her acting abilities in front of the camera. Before taking over the music industry, Grande found Hollywood success while working on the set of Nickelodeon’s Victorious as Cat Valentine, featuring the iconic Victoria Justice.

While the 31-year-old pop star tried to navigate through her acting career, she also gave some attention to her musical aspirations behind the scenes. In 2013, she released a single called The Way, featuring Mac Miller, who tragically passed away in 2018, and it quickly drew a lot of attention to her work.
Eventually, Grande had to give time to music as it found far more success than her Hollywood career. But she certainly hasn’t forgotten her theatrical roots either. The pop star...

They say there are only three certainties in life: death, taxes, and the release of at least one new Hong Sang-soo film each year. In a career marked by extreme prolificness—”By the Stream” is his ninth film to come out this decade, which, need I remind you, is less than halfway through completion—Hong’s directorial approach has equally been marked by its own set of developments coinciding with his personal journey; minor adjustments for anyone just popping in periodically on one of his many features, but for those accustomed to his propensity for self-reflection and jarring zooms, these changes may as well be signs of a whole new artist.
In particular, this new decade seems to have brought with it a more seasoned shade of that contemplative attitude—one that recognizes the internal faults Hong would begin to examine in the previous decade, but with a newfound understanding...

Although Elvis Presley was Lisa Marie Presley’s father, he was also her favorite performer. She loved watching him on stage and recording the songs that have since become industry classics. However, Lisa Marie had her favorite Elvis songs. She always asked him to perform these two classic tunes from his extensive catalog.
Lisa Marie Presley’s two favorite Elvis Presley songs were soulful classics
Elvis Presley’s music catalog consisted of hundreds of songs. With so many to pick from, Lisa Marie Presley narrowed her choices to two.
Lisa Marie’s daughter, Riley Keough, shared her mom’s choices in her late mother’s soon-to-be-released autobiography, From Here to the Great Unknown. People Magazine published an excerpt.
“I had certain songs that I liked; “Hurt” and “How Great Thou Art.” I would ask him to sing those songs for me, and he would always say yes,” Lisa Marie revealed.

You know what they say: Two is a trend. When most audiences first met Canadian rising star Gabriel Labelle, it was with Steven Spielberg’s 2022 “The Fabelmans,” in which the beloved American auteur told his own semi-autobiographical origin story, with Labelle starring as his cinematic avatar, budding filmmaker Sammy Fabelman. Kind of a crazy introduction to Hollywood, right?
But while Labelle relished the role — and earned plenty of acclaim for it, including winning Best Young Performer at the 28th Critics’ Choice Awards and the award for Breakthrough Performance from the National Board of Review (an accolade he shared with “Till” standout Danielle Deadwyler) — he was also eager to embrace original films. That included Adam Carter Rehmeier’s well-regarded coming-of-age charmer “Snack Shack,” a ’90s-set comedy that helped scratch Labelle’s itch to fully craft a character (and a part he won while still in production on “The Fabelmans”).
But true...

A muse, a mother, a fashionista, an actor, a rock ‘n’ roll icon — it’s hard to describe exactly why Anita Pallenberg remains such a compelling figure more than a half-century after the captivating blonde sang backing vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and starred in movies like “Performance” and “Barbarella.”
The new documentary “Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg” delves into both the beautiful and tragic moments of her eventful life with the help of a treasure trove of home movies and interviews, as well as an unpublished memoir penned by Pallenberg and narrated by Scarlett Johansson. The footage is coupled with interviews of the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, with whom she had a significant relationship, their children Marlon and Angela Richards, director Volker Schlondorff, who cast her in some of his films, and her former friends and associates.

Drake slams Grammy Awards 2024 on social media ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
February 4 marked the day when the Grammy Awards 2024 happened in Los Angeles. A lot happened on the stage that made viewers fall in love with the music award ceremony all over again. However, is it even an award show without any drama? The drama didn’t happen at the ceremony, but on social media. Drake took to his Instagram page to post a story taking a sly dig at the awards show.
On his Instagram page, Drake shared a video from the past in which he gave an inspiring speech for artists about awards. The text on the video reads, “You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs work for work. If you’re the hero in your hometown.” The rapper wrote in his story, “All you incredible artists, remember, this show isn’t the...

Dua Lipa performed an electric mashup of “Dance the Night,” Houdini,” and the unreleased “Training Season” to open the 66th annual Grammys. “Training Season” is the most recent single off of her highly anticipated third album, following “Houdini.”
Lipa started the night off on a brilliantly high note with the single’s debut, asking “Are you someone that I can give my heart to?” while dancing in, around, and on top of an industrial cage surrounded by the romantic contenders she’s swearing off as training season ends. Dressed in...

Written and directed by Issa López, the fourth season of HBO’s crime anthology series True Detective takes place in Ennis, a remote Alaskan town where the sun never fully rises. This is a place that seems to exist outside of time, like a purgatory at the end of the world, and it’s a perfect setting for the show’s dark and broody brand of ontological mystery.
One of those souls is Ennis police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), a once promising detective who’s been banished to this remote spot by the powers that be. And it doesn’t take us long to figure out why: Flitting between colleagues and suspects with a “fuck you” smile and a clipped insult, she seldom exits a room without leaving at least one pissed-off person in her wake.
Of course, Danvers’s hostility is a form of self-defense—a way to...

Lily Gladstone is the crown jewel of awards season so far, on her way to a likely Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Just last week, Gladstone earned the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, among many other honors already happening.
But at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, Lily Gladstone added the Performance Award to those accolades for her searing turn in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama. The Montana-born actress — who is of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage — plays the real-life Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who played a pivotal but tragic role in exposing the systematic murder of wealthy Osage by white opportunists in 1920s Oklahoma.
Yet instead of only touting her acclaimed role in the Apple Original Films feature — her studio debut — she took to the IndieWire Honors stage to champion her indie film “Fancy Dance,...

In one scene early in Todd Haynes’s new film, May December, Joe’s (Charles Melton) face flickers with the grey-blue light of the TV screen playing a commercial for face wash. The commercial stars Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), the TV star who will be playing his wife, Gracie (Julianne Moore), in an upcoming film and who will be visiting their home to do research for the role. The brief shot of Elizabeth’s face, sparkling with water and freshness and something like “realness,” loops on itself over and over again, while Joe’s eyes glaze over.
Later in the film, days into her research into Joe and Gracie’s lives, a lurid scene of an adult woman seducing a 13-year-old pet store employee plays on the television set in Elizabeth’s hotel room, a black bar on the screen boldly stating “Do Not Replicate.” It signals at once a trashiness...

It’s often said of the 1960s that “if you can remember it, you weren’t really there”. Here, Anita Pallenberg, a woman who absolutely personifies the swaggering, love-drenched freedom of a certain facet of sixties art and culture, proves that to be, once and for all, quite astonishing bollocks. Before her death in 2017, Pallenberg – an era-defining model and actress who, as the ex-girlfriend of Keith Richards and Brian Jones (and briefly the lover of Mick Jagger) is often described as the unofficial “sixth Rolling Stone” – wrote her memoirs. They form the basis of this remarkable intimate documentary, navigating the shifting fortunes of her life with admirable authenticity.
Those memoirs are narrated here by “an actress” with some husky-voiced depth that will feel fairly familiar. It should —it’s Scarlet Johansson, though the film makes a point of not distracting us with that fact until the credits roll. She does...

In the first of a new monthly Observer column on his favourite film-makers, Mark Kermode salutes the elliptical vision of the director of Don’t Look Now, Walkabout, Performance and so much more
This month marks 50 years since the release of Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, a personal touchstone movie (adapted from a story by Daphne du Maurier) that is at once an occult chiller, a poignant portrait of married love, a heartfelt meditation on grief and a shaggy dog story with a grisly sting in its tail. The anniversary offers film fans an excuse to dust off this classic, alongside other hallowed 1973 movies such as Enter the Dragon, The Exorcist and The Wicker Man, which was originally the supporting feature for Don’t Look Now (how’s that for a double bill). It also allows me to kick off my new column, focusing each month on a different director, with...

The 2023 edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival opens Friday night with some A-list firepower. Ewan McGregor and Alicia Vikander will be in the Czech spa town to collect special honors, while Russell Crowe is attending for a career retrospective and to receive the Crystal Globe lifetime achievement award. Crowe will also be performing on the opening night along with his band The Gentlemen Barbers.
But there’ll also be another musical act set to play June 30 at the opening concert, one that’s perhaps a little more established than the Gladiator star (no disrespect, Russell).
English band Morcheeba have been fine-tuning their downtempo, electronic vibes since forming in the mid-1990s, moving from trip hop origins into more pop-based, hip-hop-infused soul waters, most notably with the 1998 breakout album Big Calm and 2000’s follow-up, Fragments of Freedom. ESPN announced the nominees for the 2023 Espys, in which athletes like LeBron James and Patrick Mahomes are up for “Best Record-Breaking Performance” and “Best Athlete, Men’s Sports,” respectively. Other headliners include three-time nominee Mikaela Shiffrin facing off against A’ja Wilson, Sophia Smith, and Iga Świątek for “Best Athlete, Women’s Sports.” Alongside James as a newcomer to the category will be F1’s Max Verstappen, Novak Djokovic, and Mikaela Shiffrin for “Best Record-Breaking Performance.” Joining Mahomes is fellow two-time nominee Nikola Jokíć alongside newcomers Aaron Judge and Lionel Messi. Lastly, making her sixth straight appearance in Best WNBA Player, Candace Parker joins back-to-back nominee Skylar Diggins-Smith alongside A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Fun fact: Jokić is the lowest-drafted player (41st overall in the second round in 2014) to win the NBA Finals Mvp, passing Dennis Johnson, who was drafted 29th overall in 1979. Happy Pride, everyone! Paris Hilton and Kim Petras have come together to maximize their joint slay by re-recording Paris’ iconic 2006 song “Stars Are Blind.” Listen to the new version of the track below.
As expected for Paris — her musical career has been based more on vibes than artistic innovation — “Stars Are Blind (Paris’ Version)” doesn’t so much revamp the original than add a verse from Petras to the track (in addition to adding a ton of reverb to Hilton’s vocals). Still, Petras’ contribution is enough to keep the revamp afloat. “I can be your confidant,” the German artist sings, before adding, “Out of everybody in the galaxy, you’re the only one I really want with me.”
On June 7th, Hilton is due to perform at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles (grab tickets here). Soon after, on June 23rd, Petras will release her long-awaited debut full-length Feed the Beast,...

Updated with new title of documentary Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg: Were it not for a chance encounter with the Rolling Stones in 1965, we might remember Anita Pallenberg as an exceptional actress and stunning model. Instead, her life was to be defined largely in relation to her ties with the “greatest rock n’ roll band in the world.”
In the documentary Catching Fire: The Story of Anita Pallenberg, which premiered earlier this week at the Cannes Film Festival (under the abbreviated title Anita), the radiant and compelling Pallenberg finally gets her due as a creative force in her own right, a woman of alluring beauty, intelligence, dysfunction, addiction, and yes, an important figure in the world of the Stones at their apex.

San Francisco, April 21 (Ians) Google is reportedly planning to incorporate generative artificial intelligence into its advertising business in the coming months as big tech companies rush to adopt the technology.
According to the Financial Times, the tech giant is preparing to integrate its generative AI technology, which also powers its Bard chatbot, into the Performance Max programme.
Performance Max is a programme Google has offered since 2020 that uses an algorithm to determine where ads should run and how marketing budgets should be spent, as well as producing simple ad copy.
Google currently used artificial intelligence in its advertising business to produce simple suggestions that urge people to purchase things.
However, by incorporating its most recent generative AI, it will be able to develop considerably more sophisticated ads similar to those created by marketing agencies, according to the report.
Moreover, the report mentioned that, with this technology, advertisers can supply “creative” content such as imagery,...

Tunisian Murder Mystery ‘Ashkal’ Triumphs At Fespaco
Tunisian director Youssef Chebbi’s investigative thriller Ashkal has won the top prize at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco). The festival, which ran from February 25 to March 4, unfolds every two years in Burkina Faso’s capital of Ouagadougou and is regarded as Africa’s equivalent of Cannes. The film world premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and then played a raft of other festivals including Toronto and London. The Fespaco jury head, producer Dora Bouchoucha, praised the film’s pairing of a strong aesthetic with a politically tuned-in storyline. Decades of egregious snubs and exasperating exclusions have chipped away at the Grammy Awards’ reputation — so much so that the honor’s relevancy is relitigated annually. Are the Grammys important? And if so, to whom? These questions haunt every season as the discourse circles the familiar talking points. On one side: The awards symbolize validation from peers and industry leaders. On another: Recording Academy approval doesn’t matter when their choices rarely reflect contemporary tastes or acknowledge real innovation.
Last year’s show, held in Las Vegas, was an awkward and feeble attempt to re-establish relevancy by reflecting real-world issues: Trevor Noah took the stage as host and guided viewers through a disjointed hours-long concert that included brief interludes to honor tour managers, celebrate freedom and highlight the war in Ukraine with a prerecorded message from president Volodymyr Zelensky. The whole production, which unfolded in the aftermath of The Slap,...

Sharon D Clarke’s performance of the showstopping musical number “Lot’s Wife” in the second act of Caroline, Or Change will almost certainly be among the Broadway highlights weighed in the minds of Tony Award voters when they cast their ballots for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. The number, and the performance, are harrowing: Clarke’s character Caroline, the Black maid in an early 1960s Southern White Jewish household, has reached a breaking point of sorts, her years of struggle and loss erupting in one exchange of words with the young Jewish boy she’s all but raised, and the words of hate and cruelty that emerge from deep recesses of characters that had long shared real moments of connection and affection have shaken Caroline to her core.

Annie Clark unzipped out of her St. Vincent musical persona more nakedly than ever with the release of the 2017 album “Masseduction,” a chronicle of fame and excess that deals in drugs, sex, and broken relationships. While Clark argues that “you do know me if you listen to my music,” as the former Polyphonic Spree guitarist turned divine solo act explained to IndieWire, that album offered listeners a more raw St. Vincent than they’d heard before, especially in the aftermath of high-profile romances with stars like Kristen Stewart and Cara Delevingne.

Smize Cream isn’t just an ice cream shop. Tyra Banks hopes her new ice cream company, named after her signature modeling expression of “smiling with your eyes,” is the start of an empire with a reach and scope akin to Disney.
“Walt Disney is one of my inspirations, my role models,” Banks, 47, tells me during a chat outside the flagship Smize shop at Santa Monica Place two days ahead of its July 2 grand opening. “I look at what he did and how it’s still relevant to this day. His legacy lives on — the family entertainment, the happiest place on Earth. That’s what I want, a legacy.”
Smize comprises not only a collection of seven ice cream flavors, including The Best Vanilla I Ever Had, Cookie Caramel Queen and Chocolate Barbeque (think smoky dark chocolate), but also a cast of original animated characters including DJ Splitz and Lil Y.

Vanilla ice cream is a fine treat. It’s unlikely to knock anyone’s socks off, but the familiarity isn’t going to ruffle any feathers, either. Of course, no one would be happy if plain vanilla ice cream is the only option available at their local ice cream parlor. Sometimes, you need a little extra to excite the taste buds. The same can be said about romantic-comedies. With the “rom-com” label, audiences know what to expect. It’s the vanilla of film genres, just begging for someone to come along and add some sprinkles and chocolate sauce.

"I told you that you weren't the kind of guy who could handle this..." Gravitas Ventures has released the official trailer for an indie romantic comedy called Vanilla, which premiered at the Cinequest, RiverRun, and Lone Star Film Festivals last year. "Things seem to be going great, as the vanilla guy is forced out of his comfort zone by the free-spirited woman. That is until he learns more about her occupation and other secrets, which threaten to blow up his fantasy." Surprise, surprise. Kelsea Bauman also stars with Dennis. He explains that the film is based on a real experience he had with a now-ex-girlfriend, and wanted to see if these characters would respond better than he did. Enjoy. Here's...

Let’s be real, most people love the idea of dating a partner that is wild, carefree, and willing to push boundaries. But then, when it happens, that fantasy most often turns into a relationship built on jealousy and awkwardness. That’s the sort of issue that plagues the lead character, Elliot, in the upcoming comedy film, “Vanilla.”
As the title and the new trailer (which we are debuting exclusively) suggests, “Vanilla” tells the story of a fairly boring, if not totally bland, dude that finds himself exploring his budding relationship with an exciting woman while going on a road trip to sell a van.

Manu Dibango, the acclaimed Cameroonian saxophonist whose 1972 hit, “Soul Makossa,” would later be sampled by Michael Jackson, Kanye West, and dozens of other musicians, died Tuesday from the coronavirus. He was 86.
A note on Dibango’s Facebook page confirmed his death, as well as the cause (Dibango was hospitalized with Covid-19 in France last week). The note says the funeral would be a private family event, but suggests a tribute would be scheduled soon. Fans are also encouraged to send condolences to manu@manudibango.net.

It’s time for a huge, freakin’ celebration because “Family Guy” has been on television for 21 years. The animated sitcom centers around Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane), a fat and not-too-bright blue collar worker living in Quahog, Rhode Island. His family consists of Lois (Alex Borstein), his constantly ignored wife, Meg (Mila Kunis), their gloomy daughter, Chris (Seth Green), the dim-witted middle son, Stewie, a baby bent on world domination and matricide, and Brian, the intellectual and alcoholic family dog (the latter two also voiced by MacFarlane). We don’t have a random cutaway to help commemorate this anniversary, but we did put together the 40 greatest episodes of the series ever, ranked worst to best. Click through our photo gallery above and see if your favorite episode made the list.
