What do we have here folks? A Euro-crime movie that predates both "The Godfather" and "Dirty Harry"? Yes we do! As any fan of the genre can tell you, its mostly made up of rip offs of those two films, so to see one made in 1968 is pretty cool. Anyway, apart from pre-dating the genre's major influences, "Machine Gun McCain" is still a pretty cool movie with lots of outstanding action scenes. One of the things that stands out most about this film is the great acting from the solid cast that includes John Cassavetes, Britt Ekland and Peter Faulk. All do an excellent job, particularly Faulk in his role as the ruthless gangster Charlie. I also enjoyed Ekland's (one of my all time favorite 60's and 70's Euro-babes) quite a bit. Cassavetes likewise gives a nice performance in the title roll. To top it all off, this movie features an Ennio Morricone score. It's sparser than his better know Spaghetti western scores, but it works very well all the same. The title ballad was especially good. This film also has a good deal of violence for a late 60's movie featuring lots of gunshots and exploitations. This is a really cool film, but it could have used some nudity.
