Plot: A year in the life of a family of Sasquatch, as they forage for food, hook up, and narrowly avoid civilization.
Review: Sasquatch Sunset is unique; I’ll give it that. David and Nathan Zellner’s film has two big stars in the leads – Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough – but covers them in enough prosthetics to make them completely unrecognizable. The film doesn’t contain a single line of dialogue. Indeed, the whole movie is in grunts and yells because…well… they’re Sasquatch!
While some may find the very idea of this movie tedious, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Sasquatch Sunset. The Zellner Brothers have a unique voice, as depicted in Damsel and Kumiko the Treasure Hunter. It’s weird to say that a movie with no dialogue or humans could actually be considered their most accessible movie to date – but it’s true. This...

Nathan Zellner and David Zellner’s Sasquatch Sunset is stomping into circa 850 theaters this weekend after debuting in 9 with a solid opening for a film many could find weird. A tribe of Sasquatch, possibly the last of their kind, live and love in the woods of northern California, where it was shot.
“We are taking Bigfoot to America. We have high hopes that the broader market will embrace the movie,” says Kyle Davies of distributor Bleecker Street, calling it “a very different” kind of movie and “a bit of an unknown.”
“It’s a wildcard.”
Marketing was mainly through social activations. “I wouldn’t call it traditional marketing. It doesn’t really fit in that box,” Davies adds. The Sasquatch standees in theaters are fun. And Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is displaying a baby Sasquatch sitting in a glass case with umbilical cord and placenta.
This is “a polarizing film.

Nicki Minaj held nothing back for the new “Sleeze Mix” remix of her hit, “Ftcu,” enlisting Travis Scott, Sexyy Red, and Chris Brown for the track.
The remix absolutely lives up to its sleazy billing, with all three guests delivering verses that are boisterous, graphic, and horny as hell. Sexxy Red probably delivers the tamest bars, and she’s still threatening to beat someone’s ass in the club. Meanwhile, Scott rhymed “burst,” “work,” twerk,” and “squirt,” and Brown, well, uh, yeah, his verse is definitely the most explicit, and the less said about that,...

Bigfoots or Sasquatches, these creatures that straddle the line between man and beast are a captivating blend of mystery and fascination. Picture cavemen of colossal stature, untouched by the need to shave their skin. That’s your typical bigfoot. These enigmatic beings have also found their way into the spotlight of cinema, becoming iconic movie stars in their own right.
While they may have fewer film representations than their arctic counterparts, the yeti, Bigfoot has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. Whether these creatures were scene stealers or the main attraction, the Sasquatch has carved a unique place in cinema history. Each character brings a distinct perspective to the mythos, from the terrifying and elusive family of beasts in the newly released Sasquatch Sunset to the misunderstood and gentle Mr. Link. They know how to bust a move, look for their own, and fly! Yes, fly.

In the past, many actors have gone to extreme lengths to play a character or prepare for a role they were offered to make the most of the opportunity. For Jesse Eisenberg, that length was going full monkey mode and playing the role of Sasquatch.
In fact, the initial release and clips from his film Sasquatch Sunset has turned the eyes of almost everyone to the project, who cannot wait to witness this film in theaters soon.
Jesse Eisenberg in a still from Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice
But even when people are impressed with what the star has done in this surreal comedy film, it seems like a different species of audience member didn’t feel the same. In an interview, Eisenberg revealed that he once showed this film to a Bonobo monkey named Kanzi, who is considered the smartest ape, who had a very strong reaction to his character in the film.

“Sasquatch Sunset” is a new ‘Bigfoot’ comedy feature, directed by David and Nathan Zellner, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough as grunting ‘yeti’ creatures, opening April 12, 2024 in theaters:
“…in the misty forests of North America, a family of ‘Sasquatches’—possibly the last of their enigmatic kind— embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year.
“These shaggy and noble giants fight for survival as they find themselves on a collision course with the ever-changing world around them…”

The Austin-based filmmaking duo of David and Nathan Zellner have spent the last decade-plus upending genre conventions within the coming-of-age movie (2012’s Kid-Thing), the road movie, and the western (2018’s Damsel). With their latest feature, Sasquatch Sunset, the brother filmmakers have concocted a work that’s entirely sui generis. A film they billed ahead of its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival as “a year in the life of a singular family” is, in fact, a chronicle of four Bigfoot-like creatures roaming the forest without human interruption or intervention.
Sasquatch Sunset picks up a thread from the Zellner brothers’ 2011 short “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2,” which treats the American mythical figure as an unironic anthropological specimen. The feature takes their exploration even further as it tracks a mother and father (Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough), along with their two children (Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner), as they interact with the animal kingdom and natural world.

The story of a man and a beast. This entrancing short film is titled Alberto and The Beast and it played at last year's Toronto Film Festival. After screening at festivals it's now online to enjoy - all 17 minutes of it. While working for a children's show, a wildlife researcher encounters Bigfoot in the woods. Alberto and The Beast is written and directed by John Paul Lopez-Ali, starring Bruno Kanter as Alberto. (He looks a lot like Burn Gorman.) This is also the perfect companion piece to the other Bigfoot movie arriving in theaters later this month - Sasquatch Sunset from the Zellner Brothers. Both Sunset and Alberto approach sasquatches with the same sensibilities - they're misunderstood creatures and humans shouldn't just see them as a rare phenomenon to capture on camera. I do wish there was a bit more going on with Alberto and his new friend in this short,...

This article contains spoilers for the entire season of "3 Body Problem."
Against all odds, a new adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" is finally here and it truly lives up to its billing as the nerdiest series of the year. Readers know full well just how deep in the weeds the original story can get, as author Liu Cixin oftentimes spends entire passages breaking down the finer points of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and other heady Stem topics that definitely aren't for the faint of heart. It's to the writer's credit that even the driest of subject matter still provides a foundation for one of the most entertaining epics in all of fiction, made up of a full trilogy of books collectively titled "Remembrance of Earth's Past," thanks in no small part to his commitment to getting the science right wherever possible. In short, Cixin envisions an...

What the heck is Sasquatch Sunset?
Sure, we watched the trailer released earlier this year, but that didn’t help much. Outside of brief introductory text and quotes from critics, the wordless trailer introduces us to a group of Bigfoots in their natural wooded habitat. We watch them frolic in the woods, pound sticks on trees, and, yes, screw.
Although Sasquatches have appeared in film before, they usually have a clear and definable purpose. They’re monsters in movies such as Willow Creek or slightly bigger pets in comedies like Harry and the Hendersons. But Sasquatch Sunset doesn’t seem to fit into either of those categories, so what kind of movie is it?
“The movie is so funny because you’re watching these things that feel othered,” actor Jesse Eisenberg tells Den of Geek at SXSW 2024. “And then in 10 minutes, you’re watching these things that feel completely human,...

Bigfoot isn’t the only elusive cryptid in horror. Director Kourtney Roy‘s feature debut, Kryptic, centers around an amnesiac in pursuit of a missing cryptozoologist and the Canadian cryptid she was pursuing. Don’t expect a straightforward approach to this cryptid tale, though. Kryptic earns its title and then some, unfurling an esoteric psycho-thriller that uses its forest dwelling creature as an atypical monster metaphor.
Kay Hall (Chloe Pirrie) can’t remember anything before the bizarre encounter in the woods that wiped her memory and left her traumatized. A return to where it began, Krypto Peak, stirs up scattered but visceral memories of an eerie Sasquatch-like creature, and a tour group notes Kay’s uncanny resemblance to missing cryptozoologist Barb Valentine. It sparks Kay’s quest to seek out and find the real Barb, hoping it’ll bring answers and fill in her missing memories. The closer she gets to uncovering the truth,...

Last month, in the heat of the Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion beef, TMZ reported that the cemetery where Megan’s mother Holly Thomas is buried had to bolster security after the location was doxxed on social media by one of Nicki’s fans, collectively known as “Barbz.” Nicki had nothing to do with the threat, but the brazenness was nonetheless regarded as a low point for stan culture and led many to ponder if that depth of celebrity stan-dom was a mental illness in itself.

The enduring myth of Bigfoot gets an often funny and surprisingly poignant consideration in Sasquatch Sunset, the latest offbeat tale from brothers David and Nathan Zellner. Although you’ll be hard pushed to recognise them beneath the fur and prosthetics, this wordless comedy stars Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough alongside Nathan Zellner and Christophe Zajac-Denek as a troop of sasquatches.
The film premiered at Sundance in January, before having its international bow in Berlin this week.
David Zellner, who wrote as well as co-directed the movie with his sibling, says: “We've always loved Bigfoot since we were kids.”
He says that they became interested in what became known as the Patterson-Gimlin film, from the late Sixties, which purports to show a sasquatch in the wild.

Welcome back to Dead Time. I hope you left a light on for me because this month, we’re on the hunt for the Michigan Dogman and other cryptids that might be lurking in the darkness. I talked to Shetan Noir, a cryptozoologist, Michigan based author, journalist, and paranormal researcher about her career, as well as her personal experience with cryptid sightings.
Shetan is the Lead Investigator for the Michigan chapter of the North American Dogman Project and she runs the paranormal investigation team for the Michigan Center for Unexplained Events and Phenomenon. Her fascination began with lake monsters at an early age when she first learned about the Loch Ness monster, then heard reports of lake monsters in her own state of Michigan. Her research has since grown to include Michigan’s own Dogman and Nain Rouge, Bigfoot and ghost hunting. Her books include The Hounds Tooth Cookbook, Bone Arfp’etit!

What would a syllabus for a seminar on nonhuman perspectives in contemporary cinema look like? There are any number of recent documentary and fiction films about animal lives that one could put on there, including Jerzy Skolimowski’s E.O., Andrea Arnold’s Cow, and Elsa Kremer and Levin Peter’s Space Dogs. Of course, all these share the limitation that, though they transgress human/animal boundaries, they’re still at least tenuously tied to reality. Not a single one of them dares to question what it would look like if a group of Bigfoots pissed and shat all over a forest roadway in raging anger and confusion over its mere existence.

Four mythical hairy creatures, communicating in grunts, inhabit what could be a post-apocalyptic world in the Zellner brothers’ witty and unnerving film
The Zellner brothers, David and Nathan, take their absurdism and futurism to the next level with a brilliant and radical comedy about the secret life of the legendary Sasquatch, Aka Bigfoot, creatures rumoured to be living in the North American wilderness. Sasquatch Sunset is a film to compare with Planet of the Apes, or Watership Down, or even the days of silent cinema. Nonverbal cinema anyway. It’s a plaintive, echoing wail of fear in that big empty forest where no one is around to hear a falling tree; fear of climate catastrophe, fear of the ongoing environmental destruction in which we don’t even fully know what’s getting destroyed; fear of humanity’s own extinction.
And as the movie begins, maybe humanity is already extinguished. We...

Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough are a couple like you’ve never seen (ecause they’re both Sasquatches). The Zellner brothers’ upcoming film “Sasquatch Sunset” follows a “year in the life of a singular family” of Sasquatch, per the official logline. Keough, Eisenberg, co-director Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek make up the family of mythical creatures.
Helmed by directing duo David and Nathan Zellner and written by David Zellner, “Sasquatch Sunset” is an entirely wordless film, other than the grunts and groans of the titular creatures. The feature debuted at Sundance 2024 and will distributed by Bleecker Street this spring.
Actor and producer Eisenberg previously starred opposite David Zellner in Riley Stearns’ “The Art of Self-Defense,” which was produced by Nathan Zellner. Eisenberg said to Variety in August 2022 that the Zellner brothers are “brilliant directors that I’ve wanted to work with for a long time.”

Austin-based indie directors David and Nathan Zellner have spent more time thinking about Sasquatch than most filmmakers do musing about human beings. In 2011, they brought “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2” to the Sundance Film Festival, a four-minute faux nature documentary in which a hirsute creature can be seen giving birth to an equally furry infant. Thirteen years later, the siblings return with “Sasquatch Sunset,” a one-joke feature that leaves the amateur videographer gimmick behind, committing itself to tracking a year in the lives of a Sasquatch family of four — let’s call them Big Foot, Mama Foot, Tender Foot and Buster (the runt of the litter).
In case you were wondering, the joke is that the film exists at all … because who would finance, much less star in, an 88-minute portrait of these apocryphal brutes? The late-arriving punchline comes with the end credits, when the names Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg appear...

The costumes and makeup are going to get you first (they’re fantastic), but don’t discount the sneaky emotional power that lurks under enough hair and skin and dirt and little, skinny pee-pees to make even the most eagle-eyed of audiences not quite realize they’re looking at Jesse Eisenberg or Riley Keough. In David and Nathan Zellner’s long-gestating, oft-teased, and mildly secretive “Sasquatch Sunset,” the four-strong family unit at the story’s heart might not look like you and me, but they sure feel human.
That’s not to say they’re not taking by their more animalistic tendencies, as Eisenberg, Keough, Nathan Zellner, and Christophe Zajac-Denek spend much of the film’s running time — which clocks in at a slim 89 minutes, but it can feel much longer during slower stretches, and covers a full year in their lives — farting, fucking, eating, snorting, sniffing, and even communicating...

Exclusive. When the alternative book of film trivia is written, a page will be dedicated to the influence of Leonard Nimoy’s paranormal-themed late-’70s TV show In Search of… on director siblings. It was here that Albert and Allen Hughes first heard about Britain’s most notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper, beginning an obsession with Victorian London that resulted in their 2001 horror-drama From Hell. And for David and Nathan Zellner, the cultural impact was very similar.
“We loved that show,” recalls David. “As kids, there wasn’t much out there, that we were exposed to, that covered those sorts of things. They’d cover the Loch Ness monster, everything. I remember one about plants, wondering if they were able to think and what kind of music they’d like to listen to. They got really obscure with some of the subjects, but we loved that show. We loved the vibe of it.

It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!
The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

This article contains major Scream VI spoilers.
Screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are somewhat superstitious. This is not to say the pair of scribes believe in things like spirits, jinxes, or Bigfoot. But when it comes to collaborating on the script for a beloved franchise, they refuse to tempt fate by discussing what their plans for the next one might be. Instead they treat each film, be it 2022’s Scream (aka Scream 5) or last month’s Scream VI, like potentially the last word on its series. For that reason, they didn’t even begin swapping ideas on VI until the project was greenlit and the pair were having their first story meeting.
So imagine their surprise, then, that as Busick began explaining his wild idea for the opening Scream VI kill—which involved the immediate unmasking of Ghostface after he finishes butchering a poor associate film studies professor...

This week it’s a special all-Bigfoot editon of the Hero Nation Survey, our Monday column on sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and animation news.
It’s not easy watching imitators walk in your oversized footsteps. That sentiment was expressed by none other than Bigfoot himself while taking to Deadline for a rare interview tied to his new weekly streaming series, the aptly titled Bigfoot, which premiered Sunday on Mondo’s channel on Vrv, which specializes in edgy animated fare. Comedian K. Trevor Wilson provides the voice of Bigfoot, who may look cuddly but is, by turns, megalomaniacal, emotionally needy, recklessly violent, and hygiene-challenged.
The series adapts the relentlessly witty (and occasionally unsettling) illustrated books of Canadian author and artist Graham Roumieu. Roumieu was kind enough to facilitate an interview between Deadline and the infamous man-monster, who talked about the animated show but also took some shots at a pair of furry...

1978/ 1.85:1 / 92 min.

Cinematography by Jamie Anderson
Directed by Joe Dante
In 1968 Joe Dante and Jon Davison teamed up to make The Movie Orgy, a counter-culture take on 1941’s comic blitzkrieg, Hellzapoppin’. Running two hours longer than Ben-Hur, the Dante/Davison opus was an epic mash up of monster movies, kids’ shows, A-Bomb tests and toothpaste commercials – the cinematic equivalent of a Will Elder cartoon.
If it had an agenda, it was pure fun – a seven-hour blow out aimed at altered college kids weened on Mad Magazine and Famous Monsters. These days Bigfoot makes more appearances than The Movie Orgy but when one of those infrequent screenings materializes audiences are galvanized by the onslaught – and surprised by what was hiding in plain sight all the time – the supposedly buttoned-down Eisenhower era was not just deeply subversive but more than a little weird.

The hunt for the legendary Bigfoot continues to inspire filmmakers and storytellers and we’ve got a trailer for a new film for you to check out today called Hoax.
The film follows a team who travels “deep into the wilderness after a group of young campers are viciously murdered and linked to Bigfoot. The highly specialized crew search for evidence and fight to survive the powerful beast. If they work together they may live to prove the existence of bigfoot, but what they discover may be more unexpected and dangerous than anything they could have imagined.”
Bigfoot is out for blood, though, and primed to kill anyone who comes after him. The horror film actually looks like it could be pretty brutal. This could end up being a surprisingly good film!
The cast includes Adrienne Barbeau, Brian Thompson, Ben Browder, Cheryl Texiera, Shoshana Bush, Hutch Dano, Matt Reidy, Anthony Ray Parker,...

"There's something moving, I don't know what it is!" Epic Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for the "this summer's biggest horror film" titled Hoax, another new bigfoot horror movie that looks quite gnarly. The film is about an investigative team that travels deep into the wilderness after a group of young campers are viciously murdered and linked to Bigfoot. If they work together they may live to prove the existence of Bigfoot, but what they discover may be more unexpected & dangerous than anything they could've imagined. Scary. The main ensemble cast includes Adrienne Barbeau, Brian Thompson, Ben Browder, Cheryl Texiera, Shoshana Bush, Hutch Dano, Matt Reidy, Anthony Ray Parker, Christopher Soren Kelly, Ryan Lee, Max Decker, Brian Landis Folkins, Karen Slack, & Shawn Rickel. This actually looks surprisingly quite epic, like they're trying to pull off making Predator for Bigfoot on an indie budget. Here's the first official trailer (+ two posters) for Matt Allen's Hoax,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What is your favorite monster/creature of all time on TV?
April Neale (@aprilmac), Monsters & Critics
A tie for me, between “The Terror” (Season 1 on AMC) the Tuunbaq, which was a larger, toothier, freakishly lankier version of a polar bear crossed with a space alien sporting enormous claws and teeth. We met this monster in last summer’s breakout series, this lightning-fast terror within “The Terror” that was stalking, hunting and brutally killing the crew of the Hms Erebus and Hms Terror. It was a classic “and then there were none” scenario. The spiritual beast sported sci-fi elements and human-like hands and parts of its face adding to the creepy effect. Infamy, the next installment of “The Terror” for AMC this summer, cannot get here soon enough..

Legends of Tomorrow Season 4 Episode 15
Is it possible for an episode of television to be hopelessly overstuffed and yet also supremely enjoyable? Because that's where I'm at with "Terms of Service", the second to last episode of what is unquestionably my favorite show on TV right now. It was brisk and fun with great character work and a ton of humor. But man, this episode was also a ton. At least thematically.
Oddly, though, it wasn't as packed from a plot perspective. We picked up where last week left off, with Gary controlling Tabitha, his fairy godmother; Mona captured by the bureau; Neron wearing Ray's skin; Constantine in hell; and the rest of the team getting ready to raid the Time Bureau for some rescues.

The 1987-set film, which was a collaboration between Krzykowski, John Sayles, Douglas Trumbull and Lucky McKee, follows a legendary American war veteran who, decades after serving in World War II and assassinating Adolf Hitler, is contacted to hunt down the fabled Bigfoot—carrier of a deadly plague hidden deep in the Canadian wilderness.
In addition, Krzykowski created the cult comic Elsie Hooper. His film work includes live-action puppetry, animation, cloud tank photography, and classic effects techniques. He acted as a producer on the films The Woman and Carolina Low with frequent collaborator Sean Bridgers. The...

San Sebastian — Basque Audiovisual, it’s all there in the name.
A comprehensive brand encompassing companies from across the audiovisual sector of the Basque Country, Basque Audiovisual represents the international interests of local productions from the northern Spanish community.
As some of Europe’s growth is driven not by its biggest markets, but far smaller territories still growing their cinema industries, there are strong indicators that their agenda is paying off.
According to the organization’s head of communication Jara Ayucar, Basque films are not only finding homes in cinemas and on platforms abroad, but featuring in prominent positions at Europe’s most prestigious festivals.
“What we see is that more and more Basque films are competing at international festivals such as Cannes, the Berlinale, Karlovy Vary or Locarno,” she told Variety, adding: “We are showing up on the international map; the stories that our filmmakers tell are increasingly universal and exportable.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller may be executive producers on “Smallfoot,” but the movie feels like a pale imitation of their unique comedic energy. The double entendre-laden humor and catchy tunes that made “The Lego Movie” a hit are woefully missing from “Smallfoot,” a musical that tries too hard to educate kids and not hard enough to entertain them.
The premise of “Smallfoot” is inventive enough — what if Bigfoot not only existed, but lived among a whole clan of other bigfeet in a highly advanced society on a mountaintop above the clouds? Such is the adorable village where we meet Migo (Channing Tatum), a simple gong-ringer’s son who wants nothing more than to grow up and continue his father’s (Danny DeVito) legacy. What, you may ask, is a gong-ringer? It’s not good to ask too many questions in this village, but…the gong-ringer rings the gong every...

Bigfoot (aka: Sasquatch), the elusive North American apeman whose alleged sightings sparked a craze that swept the nation in the 1970’s, inspired a string of cheap movies that were rushed into theatres then to cash in on the fad. The Legend Of Boggy Creek (1972), Shriek Of The Mutilated (1974), Curse Of Bigfoot (1976) Sasquatch, The Legend Of Bigfoot (1977) all made a quick buck and who can forget the ‘Bigfoot and Wildboy’ TV series and the Bigfoot episode of ‘The Six Million Dolar Man’ (and c’mon, tell me Chewbacca wasn’t inspired by the big hairy guy as well) but none were as gloriously goofy as the low-rent 1970 campfest Bigfoot. A low-budget quickie loaded with Indians, biker gangs, redneck cops, and a whole family of clumsy bigfeet, Bigfoot is about ten times more entertaining than it has any right to be, but it is Not available on DVD.
