Another Swedish trauma
ulf-635-52336726 July 2013
Director Arne Mattsson was an experienced, keen but impatient Swedish director during the 50's and 60's. Mattsson, unjustly compared to the Ingmar Bergman, made films about amorph b/w fear and mankinds incurable loneliness. In his clinched drama "Den onda cirkeln", he brings mankind to the edge. Crippled by the Stockholm critics at the premiere, the film was ditchted. End of story? I believe it is springtime for Arne Mattsson. And the Swedish drama of few words and actions. Nothing beats the depressed and petrified Swedish films. In "Den onda cirkeln", Maria, a suicidal young woman, is trying hard to process her life trauma. By going astray, looking for a new family. The father of the family rejects Maria. The adult children projects their lack of love, sex and understanding on Maria. The youngest child of the family worship the dead mother, by listening to her voice on gramophone. And Maria herself, is getting closer to the truth of her trauma...
