On a cold, wet weekend in Atlanta at the end of January, there gathered 600 colorfully dressed characters that included the Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, Baby Yoda, Stitch, Indiana Jones, the Brady Bunch, Haunted Mansion Ghosts, a Yeti, zombies — and hula performers, Maori haka dancers, and countless bartenders serving up the alcoholic kind of zombie, along with many other cocktails.

By the mid ‘60s, the glory days of Boris Karloff were far behind him. The gentle giant forever known as the screen’s original (and best) Frankenstein monster was relegated to appearing in disappointing quickies that squandered his immense talents. However, there were some twilight standouts: Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath (1963), a couple of animated delights, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) and Mad Monster Party? (1967), and his dignified portrayal of an aging horror star in Peter Bogdanovich’s debut, Targets (1968). Nestled in between (and often shown the door) was Daniel Haller’s Die, Monster, Die! (1965), an early, colorful, and fun foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft.
Released by Aip in the Us in October on a double bill with Planet of the Vampires (Bava again), Die rolled out to theatres and drive-ins across the land, but had to wait until February to be released in England under the ghastly...

So, wise reader, you may have heard of the passing of this giant in the world of cartooning, and are now wondering what he has to do with the world of motion pictures. Well, Mr. Davis did have one screen credit, which we’ll discuss in a bit. No, more importantly John Burton “Jack” Davis, Jr. has added to the fun, or to use an old term “ballyhoo”, of promoting movies for well over fifty years. It’s difficult not to think of his work when recalling so many classic films.
First, a little bio background. He was born on December 2, 1924 in Atlanta Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Jack landed several cartooning gigs including a stint with the newspaper comic strip based ion the classic character “The Saint”. Then in 1950 he joined the staff of the legendary comics publishing company Entertaining Comics (EC). Jack produced amazing art...

The Frankenstein Monster is arguably the greatest monster in all fiction. There have been a few genuinely excellent films made about him, but all too many of them are pretty bad. While the latest attempt in Victor Frankenstein falls flat, Cinelinx looks at the film history of Frankenstein to see which of them worked and which of them didn’t.
The Frankenstein Monster was the invention of 18 year old Mary Shelly (wife of poet Percy Shelly) who was vacationing in Switzerland with her husband, their close friend Lord Byron and John Polidori. Incessant rain left them housebound and reading ghost stories to each other. This led to a challenge from Byron, daring them all to create the scariest story ever told. Mary Shelly seemed outclassed by her literary companions until she heard legends of a crazy scientist named Conrad Dipple who performed illegal experiments using parts of dead bodies and electricity.

Every year as Halloween gets closer, basic cable and the DVD racks at big box stores are flooded with Halloween programming for kids—Disneyfied TV movies and animated specials featuring all their favorite characters in costume. But are these cash-ins any good? If you’re trying to foster a love of horror in your little ones—or just looking for something age-appropriate to show them during October—navigating the seas of “kid-friendly” content can be irritating at best, downright impossible at worst.
Because I both love horror movies and have small children, I have my own picks for what I’ll be showing my kids until they’re of an age for… oh, I don’t know… Cannibal Holocaust. All these choices are subjective and entirely dependent on what different kids can handle.

In just a few days, Flashback Weekend Horror Convention will be celebrating Halloween in August with their Michael Myers-related revelry (and more), and we now have a look at the final schedule for this weekend’s convention, which runs at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare from Friday, August 7th through Sunday, August 9th.
Flashback Weekend has been a longstanding tradition for me, as both a fan and as one of the co-hosts, and this year looks to be yet another incredible time for horror lovers, featuring tons of great panels, movie screenings, events, and legendary composer Alan Howarth will even be performing a special concert for attendees on Friday night.
Take a look at Flashback’s full schedule below and be sure to say hi if you happen to see me during all the festivities over the course of the weekend. For ticket information or any further details,...

The Children deals with the disintegration of the family unit, and the decay of modern society. Just kidding! The Children is about radioactive kids who like to give hugs and burn people up real good. Some horror films do have subtext, with layers peeled back to reveal inner truths about ourselves and the world. And some horror films are content to just show children having their hands cut off with a samurai sword.
Released in June of 1980, The Children was actually quite a success for a low budget film – according to Producer Carlton J. Albright (Luther The Geek) it earned $8 million dollars within its first year, playing to theaters and drive-ins alike. Not too shabby for a truly bizarre, high concept scare fest.
Okay, here we go: Two workers at a nuclear plant get a reading that there’s a malfunction. After a quick glance around the facility, and spent...

Before we get into it, let me answer my own question: Yes. Yes it is.
(Major spoilers follow. For earlier recappage, check out our piece on the first two episodes.)
When word was first announced of Showtime’s period “psychosexual horror” series Penny Dreadful, no one was sure what to expect. The best guess was that it would be a handsomely-shot mashup of a handful of big-name genre icons… with copious close-ups of boobies. But I don’t think anyone expected the full-on monster mash that we have seen in the season’s first four episodes: Dr. Frankenstein is canoodling with Ludwig Van Helsing in an attempt to stop Dracula; Frankenstein’s Monster is playing Phantom of the Opera at the Grand Guignol Theatre, and the Wolf Man just banged Dorian Gray.
Yes, you read that right: at the end of last Sunday’s episode, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) – an...

Exclusive Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Interview - The Scream Factory Comic-Con panel dropped huge news for Clive Barker fans last week when it was announced that they’d be releasing Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray. In an exclusive interview with Daily Dead, Russell Cherrington, Mark Miller, and Michael Plumides discuss their work on The Cabal Cut, teaming up with Scream Factory, bonus features, and where you can catch a screening of the movie later this week:
Congratulations on getting The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray.
Mark Miller: First let me say, this is an incredible time for Seraphim Films. We have worked closely with Morgan Creek on bringing the Cabal Cut to the world, and upon hearing the news that a deal had been struck with Shout Factory, we were overjoyed. The fruits of our labors have finally paid off. We eagerly await the next chapter in this saga.

One of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.
Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.
Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?
Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous Gwar show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film.

Scream Factory had an exciting announcement for Clive Barker fans during their Comic-Con panel tonight. We previously told you that there has been a push to get Clive Barker’s extended cut of Nightbreed on Blu-ray and it’s now official.
While this was just an early announcement, we expect The Cabal Cut blu-ray to receive the Scream Factory collector’s edition treatment, which would include a new HD transfer and an extensive set of bonus features. Here are details on the work that went into originally putting The Cabal Cut together:
“Ever since it was first released, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed has been the subject of much debate. For nearly twenty years now, there have been stories of more Nightbreed, missing scenes, and special edition releases. These stories have always been conjecture and hearsay. Until now…

Dread Central has been airing webisodes of Ghost Trek, a faux reality show lampooning all of the ghost hunting shows on TV today (like a Grave Encounters comedy). They began on 10/8 and now have 3 webisodes up, with a fourth coming next Monday. We recently got our hands on the press release that describes the show and links you to a featurette, trailer and an interview with some cast members from the WWE.
If I’m watching it, it’s because it stars the little zombie girl from The Walking Dead, Addy Miller. I have the trailer below, and the press release is below for your perusal, with links to a sizzle reel, interview with the cast, and a featurette on Ghost Trek: The Kinsey Report. Enjoy!
Trailer:
Do you ever watch those ghost hunting shows and scratch your head, thinking to yourself, “These shows are so ridiculous. Why am I watching this?...

Figure, alias Josh Gard, has carved out a solid niche for himself among the electronic dance music community, picking up major props for his live performance skills in particular. As you can tell by the wicked cover art below, Josh is also a major horror fan (much to our delight of course), and his chartbusting series Monsters of Drumstep brings his love of music, monsters and mayhem together in “a sub-slaughter potion of gruesome proportions.” The third installment in the series drops tomorrow, just in time for the Halloween season, packed with fifteen tracks like “Pounds of Blood” (featuring live drums from Motley Crüe's Tommy Lee), “Michael Myers is Dead” and “The Graveyard,” as well as remixes by J.Rabbit, Oscillator Z, Alex Sin, Dr. Ozi, and Phrenik. We'll be back soon with a full run-down on that record, but in the meantime here's the ground-pounding track “The Corpse Grinders,...

Mad Monster Party is a relatively obscure stop-motion animated musical treat from 1967 that many non-genre fans are unaware of. Aimed at children, it is the creation of Rankin and Bass, the production team responsible for so many holiday television specials including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Unlike these specials, however, Mad Monster Party made the rounds to movie theaters as a feature-length film for Saturday and Sunday matinees. It’s the obvious inspiration for Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), boasting an infectious musical score that sticks in your head long after the movie is over.

Moviefone's Pick of the Week "The Five-Year Engagement" What's It About? Jason Segel and Emily Blunt play a happily devoted couple whose impending nuptials keep getting delayed by her rising career. See It Because: Segel re-teams with his "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" co-writer and director for another romantic comedy that's very R-rated. It's a little too long, but with a supporting cast including players from "The Office," "Parks & Rec," "30 Rock" and "Community," it's pretty much an all-star team of funny people. (Also Available on Amazon Instant Video) New on DVD & Blu-ray "High School" What's It About? An MIT-bound star scholar tries weed for the first time, the night before his psycho principal (Michael Chiklis) imposes a school-wide drug test. In order to get away with his crime, he concocts a ridiculous plan to get the entire school stoned -- with the help of even more psycho dealer (Adrien Brody). In the end,...

Superstar comedienne Phyllis Diller died today in Los Angeles, California. She was 95. Diller was not the first female stand-up comic ( ‘Moms’ Mabely had been performing since the 40′s ), but her outrageous fashions and irreverent sense of humor established her as a media comedy sensation in the 1960′s. Before Rosanne Barr, Diller joked about the drudgery of housework ( and a clueless husband named ” Fang ” ) and her self-depreciating gags no doubt inspired Totie Fields and Joan Rivers. Ms. Diller ( born Phyllis Ada Driver ) was writing radio copy in the San Francisco area in the 50′s when she decided to enter the world of stand-up comedy. After success at clubs, she soon branched into television with an appearance on Groucho Marx’s quiz show ” You Bet Your Life “. After nightclubs she perhaps had her biggest successes in TV as a fixture of talk shows, variety shows and game shows, although she had little...

When it comes to careers in showbiz, few actors can say that they have done and seen as much as the legendary Phyllis Diller, who was actively working in the business until she was ninety-one years old. Sadly, she's passed away, and we'd like to take this time to honor her memory.
While most people will remember Diller for her sense of humor and insane hair, the funny lady didn't mind dipping her toe into the horror genre at all, playing parts in the little seen zombie kid classic The Boneyard as well as Rod Serling's "Night Gallery" and "Tales from the Darkside." We, however, especially this writer, will always love her for lending her voice talents to one of the all time classic children's horror films, Rankin and Bass' timeless 1967 film Mad Monster Party.

For many years most of the movie going public has associated animation with the hand drawn features of Walt Disney, like Fantasia and Dumbo. Younger audiences may think more of the computer-generated features started by Pixar with Toy Story almost 20 years ago. But there’s another type of animation that’s occasionally used in features, stop-motion animation. Instead of drawing, the artists move a figure ( sometimes a puppet, sometimes clay ) one frame at a time to simulate motion. In Hollywood’s Golden age, this technique was used in the special effects department, first by Willis O’Brien with the original 1933 King Kong and later by film wizard Ray Harryhausen with his Sinbad series and Jason And The Argonauts. Several foreign film makers used this method for short films along with George Pal producing the Puppettoons short series here for Paramount. TV entered with the Gumby shorts and later the Rankin...

Two macabre-flavored favorites are making their way to Blu-ray just in time for Halloween 2012: Tim Burton's Ed Wood (quite possibly the best movie ever made about making movies) and the Rankin-Bass stop-motion Mad Monster Party (which influenced another Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas). DVD and Blu-Ray gurus High-Def Digest has announced the imminent arrival of the 1967 stop-motion classic to Blu-Ray. The film, made by Rankin/Bass, the same team who tickled our hearts with Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, is set for a September 4th release.
The film features the voice of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein, who announces his retirement from monster-ing, and has a monster mash, inviting the whole gang, from the Mummy to Dracula and more. Hopefully the Invisible Man spikes the punch.
It will only cost you $14.99 to get the film, which will feature the following special features: “Mad Monster Party: Making of a Cult Classic,” “Groovy Ghouls: The Music of Mad Monster Party”, “It’s Sheer Animagic! Secrets of Stop-Motion Animation”, two bonus sing-along tracks and a trailer.

Over 80 years of Universal Pictures monsters smash, bash, and bite in this upcoming game from the studio behind Battlestar Galactica Online.
The biggest question about something like Universal Monsters Online is why hasn't it existed in some shape or form before now? Seriously, a Mad Monster Party homage to Dracula, Frankenstein (well, his monster, anyway), the Wolfman, the Mummy, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and any other scaly, toothy, shambling monster from the near century of classic creations from the studio in one game?
This should have been a mid-90's fighting game done with clay, easily.
As it stands, Bigpoint is developing this Mobile Battle Arena game, and while it's still early yet, they've sent along screens to whet you appetite for some monster-on-monster combat. Universal Monsters Online will, of course, be free to play, although Bigpoint wouldn't object if you threw some money their way for new characters,...
