Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of Anderson’s films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) — well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Birdman.” He...

Christopher McQuarrie is said to be directing a remake of the 1977 Clint Eastwood thriller The Gauntlet, with Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise circling.
It’s coming up on a couple of years now since Christopher McQuarrie hinted that he and Tom Cruise would continue working together beyond the next two Mission: Impossible films, both of which were yet to be unveiled to the world at that point.
McQuarrie didn’t give too much away at the time, simply telling the Light The Fuse podcast that “it’s kind of under wraps. It has neither a fuse nor a fuselage. Oh that’s not true. It does have some fuselages. It’s something we’ve talked about for a really long time. It’s way outside of what you’re used to seeing Tom do. It’s the kind of stuff I really love. It’s a little bit more in my wheelhouse.

If you had to pick the leading actress of the last decade, many would probably name Emma Stone. Playing a variety of characters – from Spider-Man's girlfriend to a girl who dreams of Hollywood – the actress has become a symbol of her time. Emma makes each movie more charming than it could be without her.
Perhaps the first movie that showed viewers the range of the actress' talent was Easy A. Comedies aren't usually used as a showcase of their skills for actors, but Easy A is a very different case.
“It's an absolute show stopping performance from Emma Stone in her first leading role. […] No one who saw that film back in 2010 would have been surprised that she got a Best Actress Oscar before she was 30 and another one before she was 35,” Reddit user faithle55 wrote.
And it’s impossible to argue with that statement.
What is Easy A About?...

The Karlovy Vary Festival will pay tribute to one of the Czech Republic’s most famous sons with a retrospective of film adaptations of the work of Franz Kafka from some of the greatest names in cinema. To mark the centenary of Kafka’s death, the festival will screen a series of films directly adapted from, or inspired by, the literary master of angst.
The retrospective will include such classics as Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962), Martin Scorsese’s Kafkaesque New York dramedy After Hours (1985) and Federico Fellini’s Intervista; Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) and its 2021 re-edit Mr. Kneff — both starring Jeremy Irons as a set-upon insurance man and writer — alongside lesser-known adaptations, including Jan Němec’s Metamorphosis, a German TV movie version of Kafka’s famous short story. Other highlights include Ousmane Sembene’s Senegalese feature The Money Order (1968) and Kôji Yamamura’s animated short Franz Kafka’s a Country Doctor (2007).

At first, I was shocked by the news that Participant Media was dying. Such an appealing company. Smart. Mindful. Vibrant. Forward-thinking. The producer of intelligent films like Spotlight and Green Book, with a distinctly progressive message.
How could this be?
Then it finally hit me. Whatever else may have happened—announcing the shutdown, proprietor Jeff Skoll cited “revolutionary” changes in the entertainment business—Participant went under, I believe, because most of high-end Hollywood jumped into the company’s basically sound but modestly sized boat. The purpose-film niche was swamped.
It’s almost hard to remember that 20 years ago, when Participant was founded, the notion of a self-consciously message-oriented, activist film company was actually novel.
But, cinematically speaking, it was a much different world in 2004. The top movie that year was Shrek 2—not much message there. Culturally, the big story was a religious film, The Passion of the Christ. That hasn’t happened since.

When describing a big star’s new release, two clichés are frequently used: it is highly anticipated and long-awaited. Well, the 11th studio album by pop sensation Taylor Swift can’t exactly be called ‘long awaited’—just 18 months have passed since the release of her previous album, Midnights. The Grammy winner made her ‘highly anticipated’ 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, available on Friday, April 19, 2024.
The 16-track album is peaceful and enjoyable to listen to, but if you read the lyrics carefully—as most Swift fans do—you will discover a convoluted and disorganized stream of thought where Swift swings between waves of introspection, rage, longing, and grief.

Also, it is interesting to note that this latest album credits the two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone for her work on the song Florida!!!.

Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

Ripped action stars have been around since the '80s when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone battled it out to see who had the bigger muscles, the most guns, and who could beat up the most bad guys. These days, being in peak physical shape for a role is pretty much the norm. Unfortunately, this has meant many actors feel more pressure than ever to get in the best possible shape, often leading them to follow dodgy and dangerous methods in pursuit of the ideal movie star physique.
For example, it's been reported that Marvel molds actors into superhero shape using a controversial source. Health expert Dr. Todd Schroeder, who was interviewed for the book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," claimed that "fifty to seventy-five percent" of Marvel Cinematic Universe actors take steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), "at least for the short term." In the book, Dr. Schroeder...

Tom Cruise made headlines earlier this year with the announcement that he was returning to Warner Bros. after a decade to collaborate on a new project. A while back ago, fans were given the exciting update that Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu is helming the film. This makes the new project even more exciting for Tom Cruise as the director’s achievements speak volumes about his films.

In 2023, some 30 years after he last donned the cape and cowl, Michael Keaton stepped back into the Batsuit for "The Flash." Keaton defined the character for me and a whole generation of kids who grew up on Tim Burton's infectiously moody takes on the Dark Knight with "Batman" and "Batman Returns." Although "The Flash" was a box office bomb of super-heroic proportions, seeing Keaton back in the suit was a thrill that gave my inner six-year-old a nostalgic jolt unlike any other.
For Keaton himself, it seems wearing the iconic costume for the first time after so long was just as moving an experience. "The Flash" director Andy Muschietti recalled how the "Birdman" star appeared to be having an emotional reaction to being in the suit when he first set foot on set and even wanted pictures to show his grandson that he was Batman.

Jenna Ortega is among the troupe of new-gen Hollywood faces who’ve offered audiences a glimpse into their acting chops, with the potential for much more.
Having dipped her toes in mainstream waters in the past few years, the actress’ filmography already boasts some incredible credits, especially within the bounds of horror films. The list includes Scream, Scream VI, X, Netflix’s Wednesday, and the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 classic.
Netflix’s Wednesday (2022)
Bearing witness to the 21-year-old star’s on-screen proficiency is the cast of the fantasy horror comedy, graced by the likes of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, etc. Previously, O’Hara had gushed about the young talent. And much recently, even Keaton echoed similar sentiments, evidently impressed by Ortega’s on-set panache.

If you look through some of the boldest, most ambitious works of the past few years, chances are you’ll find Andrea Riseborough on the call sheet.

All artists have phases within their careers, and while it's easy to demarcate what those phases are in hindsight, it can also be possible to see them emerging and mutating in real time. Emma Stone, an actress who began her journey as a comedy darling in films like "Superbad," "The House Bunny," and "Zombieland," soon found herself climbing to the A-list, nominated for an Academy Award for "Birdman" and winning Best Actress for "La La Land."
This past weekend, Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress for the second time, for her performance as Bella Baxter in "Poor Things." It's a win that seemingly signals a change in her career from a quirky ingenue to a complex and daring leading lady, especially when coupled with her other recent turn as Whitney Siegel in "The Curse."
Continuing that emerging trend, The Hollywood Reporter just announced that she'll be joining the cast...

Michelle Yeoh took a moment on Monday to clarify why she handed Emma Stone’s best actress Oscar to Jennifer Lawrence just before Stone accepted the trophy onstage.
At the 2024 Oscars on Sunday, five former best actress Oscar winners took a moment to introduce each of this year’s nominees, with last year’s winner Michelle Yeoh set to hand the trophy to the winner. When Stone’s name was called, though, Yeoh took an extra second to hand the trophy to Jennifer Lawrence, so Lawrence could hand it to Stone.
“I confused you, but I wanted to share that glorious moment of handing over [your] Oscar to you together with your best friend Jennifer!!” Yeoh wrote on Instagram on Monday. The Everything Everywhere All At Once star went on to explain that Stone and Lawrence’s friendship reminds her of herself and “my Bae Jamie Lee Curtis.” Curtis won best supporting actress last year,...

Zach Galifianakis has been cast in Season 4 of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Variety has learned.
Like recently announced cast member Kumail Nanjiani, Galifianakis’ role in the mystery-comedy series is currently kept under wraps. However, an individual with knowledge of the situation can confirm his character is “integral to the twist and turns of this season’s investigation.”
The three series leads remain Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as true crime-obsessed neighbors that get caught up in real cases. Additional new faces in Season 4 include Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Molly Shannon. Meryl Streep, who first appeared in Season 3, will also reprise her role. Little is known about the upcoming season aside from the fact that the mystery-solving trio will make a trip to Los Angeles before returning to their native New York.

Known for his versatile performances, Hollywood star Michael Keaton has become one of the best actors in the industry, even earning an Oscar nomination for his 2014 film Birdman. However, his portrayal of the iconic DC superhero Batman remains one of his most celebrated roles. Keaton took on the role in the 1989 film Batman and later returned in its 1992 sequel. And he reprised his role alongside Ezra Miller in the 2023 superhero film, The Flash.

The film, however, did not bode very well either at the box office or among critics and audiences. And former Batman villains Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito recently brought the superhero’s essence back at the 96th Academy Awards, reigniting admiration for the 72-year-old actor among fans.

The awards season created a unique bond among Best Actress nominees Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone, but Stone’s win over Gladstone did not sit well with many fans. Lily Gladstone, who played the Osage woman, Molly Burkhart, in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was expected by many to win the Oscar.

Emma Stone is now a two-time Oscar-winner, after she was honoured with the best actress trophy for ‘Poor Things’. “The other night, I was panicking, as you can kind of see, happens a lot — that maybe something like this could happen and Yorgos (Lanthimos) said to me, please take yourself out of it,” said Emma, who previously won the lead actress Oscar for ‘La La Land’ in 2017, upon accepting the honour.
“And he was right, because it’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts.”
Emma thanked ‘Poor Things’ director Yorgos Lanthimos and said: “Thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.”
The actress had also received Oscar nominations in the supporting actress category for ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Favourite’, her first collaboration with Lanthimos.

Searchlight Pictures picked up four big Oscar wins for “Poor Things” at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10. Most notably, Emma Stone won Best Actress after a nail-biting race with SAG Award winner Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). The other nominees were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”) and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”).
Hilary Swank became the first leading lady to take home the gold for Searchlight (then called Fox Searchlight Pictures) for “Boys Don’t Cry” in 2000. Next was Natalie Portman, who won for “Black Swan” in 2011. But over the last decade, the production company has established its dominance as one of the top film studios for female-driven Oscar powerhouses. Stone is the fifth Best Actress winner in seven years following Frances McDormand in 2018, Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) in 2019, McDormand again for “Nomadland” in 2021 and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) in 2022.

Emma Stone told fellow best actress nominee Lily Gladstone she was “in awe” of her while accepting the award for best actress at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night.
Stone acknowledged all of her fellow nominees but took an extra moment to address Gladstone, whom many pundits had expected to win the award after collecting several previous honors for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. “I share this with you,” she said to Gladstone. “I am in awe of you. And it’s been such an honor to do all this together; I hope we get to do more together.”
Stone won the award for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, a film for which she also served as producer. Her second collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, the movie is screenwriter Tony McNamara’s adaptation of the 1992 Frankenstein-inspired novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray.

For the first time in 12 years, the Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars have gone to the same film. “Oppenheimer” took the top honor at Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, moments after Cillian Murphy prevailed for his lead turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
“The Artist” (2011) was the last film to accomplish this feat as Jean Dujardin nabbed Best Actor. That came a year after “The King’s Speech” and star Colin Firth pulled off the double. Since these back-to-back wins, there have been a few close calls. “Birdman” (2014) won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, but not for its leading man Michael Keaton. The following year, Leonardo DiCaprio won his long-awaited Best Actor trophy for “The Revenant,” which won Best Director but not Best Picture.

“Oppenheimer” is the 28th film to win Best Picture and Best Actor. Of those, thrice has a film also won Best Actress.

Emma Stone is now a two-time Oscar winner.
The “Poor Things” actress took home the top title for her latest collaboration with auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. Stone previously won Best Actress in 2017 for Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Stone was formerly nominated for Oscars for “Birdman” and Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
“Poor Things” marks Stone’s third collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo are set to work together on upcoming films “Kinds of Kindness” and “Save the Green Planet,” a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2005 sci-fi satire.
Stone plays Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” Bella is a reanimated (and renamed) woman who, after committing suicide while pregnant, is brought back to life with the brain of her unborn child. Bella explores her turn-of-the-century world and voyages across 1800s Europe. The film is inspired by Scottish author Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel about a woman who drowns herself to escape her abusive husband. The...

Best Actress has come down to the two-horse race we always thought it would do as we enter Oscars weekend. “Poor Things” star Emma Stone took home the Best Comedy Actress Golden Globe as well as the Critics Choice and BAFTA awards for Best Actress. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” performer Lily Gladstone landed the Best Drama Actress Golden Globe and snagged the SAG award for Best Actress. That has left us Oscarologists split. Gladstone is slightly ahead in our Oscars odds chart for Best Actress but, truthfully, it could go either way.
Or could it go the same way?
Could Stone and Gladstone produce a delightful shock and share the Best Actress Oscar in a tie? Wouldn’t that be fun? Stone and Gladstone both seem like they’d be overjoyed if that were to happen, and so would we be. Best Actress has ended in a tie before.

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Well, we’ve combed through every Best Picture winner of this century and documented which other Oscars they won. We then tallied those figures up in this below handy chart:

Mexican supervising sound editor Martín Hernández, who was Oscar-nominated for Best Sound Editing for Birdman and The Revenant in 2014 and 2015 respectively, says the category is wide open this year due to the variety of movies in the running.
Features nominated in the category span The Zone of Interest, Oppenheimer and Maestro as well as surprise short list entries The Creator and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
“Isn’t that unfair? I mean, they’re so different and the work in every one of them is equally good. That’s gonna be tough,” Hernández told Deadline in a one-on-one at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event in Qatar this week.
Hernández, who has been a voting member of the Academy since 2015, refrained from saying anything else about the films in the running for the Best Sound trophy on Sunday for fear of breaking the org’s rules for voters.

“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).
Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.
Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)

The Oscar for Best Original Score has been awarded to some of the most memorable pieces of film music of all time, from “Star Wars” to “La La Land.” Many awards are considered precursors to the Oscars, so you would think the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media would be pretty accurate, right? After all, there’s surely overlap between the Recording Academy and the music branch of the motion picture academy. And musicians would naturally be more aligned with what other musicians think than with groups of journalists like the Golden Globes Association or Critics Choice Association.
The two awards bodies have overlapped a lot over the years, but they are not afraid to differ. Since 2000 Oscar-winning scores for films like “Babel,” “The Artist,” “Life of Pi” and “The Hateful Eight” have lost the Grammy, sometimes to scores they beat at the Oscars. Other Oscar champs like “Frida,...
