Sex & Nudity

  • Lieutenant Takeyama and Reiko kiss passionately.
  • Before they commit harakiri, Takeyama and Reiko have sex in the nude. The scene is long but tastefully done and relatively chaste, with little focus on actual nudity aside from two long shots with Reiko's breasts and close-ups of Reiko's belly button and Takeyama's chest. There is no genital nudity.
  • Takeyama strips down to a fundoshi. His scrotal area is very briefly seen.

Violence & Gore

  • Takeyama commits suicide by harakiri - stabbing himself in the stomach with a sword and then slitting his own throat. Major focus is placed on blood splatter going all over his hands, as well as drops of sweat on his head from the exertion. Takeyama's intestines are shown to be falling out as well. Blood sprays around the wall and on his wife Reiko's kimono.
  • Reiko commits suicide by slitting her throat with a dagger. She steps in her husband's blood on the floor as she does so. Blood sprays all over the wall.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The coupling of sexual tension with graphic violence in this film, as well as the circumstances surrounding its writer and director's own suicide several years after it was made, will almost certainly leave a mark on impressionable viewers.
