Lisa Kudrow remembers her Friends TV mom, Teri Garr, following news of her death.
Garr died at the age of 79 due to multiple sclerosis, which was first diagnosed in 1999. Kudrow shared the small screen with Garr in multiple episodes of the NBC sitcom and paid tribute to her late co-star.
“Teri Garr was a comedic acting genius who was and is a huge influence on me and I know I’m not alone in that,” Kudrow said in a statement to People. “I feel so lucky and grateful I got to work with Teri Garr.”
Garr played the role of Phoebe Abbott on Friends, Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay, and Ursula Buffay’s estranged mother. Her first appearance was in the 1997 Season 3 finale episode titled “The One at the Beach.” In the episode, Phoebe meets with a woman she believes is her parents’ friend. Phoebe later discovers that the woman is her biological mother.

We’re sad to report that Teri Garr, the gifted actress who starred in such classic films as Tootsie, Young Frankenstein, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has passed away at 79. According to her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, Garr died of multiple sclerosis after struggling with health issues in recent years. She passed away on Tuesday, leaving a legacy behind that shines like she did on the silver screen.

She appeared in films like Viva Las Vegas and Roustabout and also in Pajama Party, which starred Annette Funicello, Tommy Kirk, and Elsa Lanchester. Garr appears in various classic TV series, such as Star Trek, Batman, That Girl, Mayberry, It Takes a Thief, Room 222, and more. Regardless of her role, Garr stood out, destined to climb the Hollywood ladder with show-stopping performances in major motion pictures around the corner.

Teri Garr, beloved actress and comic of stage and screen, is dead at the age of 79. In the last decades of her life, she became an inspirational figure for those, like her, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, tirelessly working to raise awareness of the disease as a frequent speaker at the annual Race to Erase Ms events.
As much as as she inspired people in her last years, she made people smile and laugh throughout her four-decade career on stage and screen as one of the funniest actresses of her generation, in films such as “Young Frankenstein” and “Tootsie.” She was one of the harder-working people in show business, coming up via true bit parts: She was a background dancer in 1964 teen-focused concert film “The T.A.M.I. Show” and even played the Statue of Liberty in a stage production at Walt Disney World when it opened in 1971.

Teri Garr, the Oscar-nominated actress who capitalized on her adorable flightiness in such films as Tootsie and Young Frankenstein before her career was derailed by multiple sclerosis, died Tuesday. She was 79.
Garr, who started out as a background dancer working alongside Elvis Presley in several 1960s party films, died at her home in Los Angeles “surrounded by family and friends,” publicist Heidi Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter.
Garr revealed that she had Ms, the chronic, degenerative disease of the nervous system, on Larry King’s CNN show in October 2002, and she survived emergency surgery to treat a brain aneurysm four years later. Her final onscreen appearance came in 2011.
Garr’s career breakthrough came as Gene Wilder’s comely Transylvanian lab assistant in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1974). She received her supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing Dustin Hoffman’s insecure actress friend in Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982).
Those films ranked Nos.

There could be more 9-1-1 on the horizon, and the possibilities surrounding that are endless.
When news broke via Variety recently that Ryan Murphy was working on another spinoff of the popular first responder procedural that would potentially come in the wake of 9-1-1: Lone Star officially ending its run over five seasons, many thoughts came to mind.
Fans were delighted to hear that there could be more 9-1-1 to devour, but the scarce details left many wondering what exactly the latest spinoff would entail.
(Disney/Justin Stephens)
Would one of the original characters from the original series or Lone Star find their way over to the new spinoff so audiences already knew a familiar face? Or would this new series feature a brand-new cast?
Would they keep the same setup as the others or switch things up?
And the most important question of all: what...

On October 9, the historic Tropicana Las Vegas hotel, which opened on April 4, 1957, was imploded to make room for a new baseball stadium.
The third-oldest casino on the strip, Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel closed on April 2, just two days before its 67th anniversary to prepare for its demolition. Many Vegas residents have wondered why the implosion could not be held off for two more days to celebrate the building’s last birthday.
General manager and vice president at the Tropicana Arik Knowles said of the decision, “Let’s not think of it as an ending but as the beginning of something even greater.”
window._taboola = window._taboola || []; _taboola.push({ mode: 'thumbnails-mid', container: 'taboola-mid-article-thumbnails', placement: 'Mid Article Thumbnails', target_type: 'mix' });
The demolition of the building, which took under 30 seconds, required 2,000 pounds of explosives and four miles of detonating cord. The hotel received fireworks and a 555-drone salute show to celebrate its conclusion.

In a tribute to Sin City, Orville Peck and Beck perform back-to-back on a roulette wheel and rope in Sharon Stone for a glitzy Casino callback in the music video for their duet “Death Valley High.”
The clip even opens with the words “Peck Beck” in lights, paying tribute to Elvis Presley’s ’68 comeback special. The song, which will appear on Peck’s upcoming Stampede album when it arrives next month, also bears a jaunty resemblance to Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas,” though the King could never rap like Beck.

Elvis Presley acted in his first film in 1956 and continued to work consistently as an actor until 1969. Though Elvis saw himself as a singer first, he appreciated the work he did on film sets. Over time, though, his enjoyment of acting waned. Elvis’ stunt double believed one movie in particular marked a negative turning point in the singer’s film career.
Elvis’ stunt double said one film changed the singer’s career for the worse
In 1964, Elvis starred in Kissin’ Cousins, a comedy musical. The film’s director, Gene Nelson, said Elvis was a hard worker and always brought a positive attitude to set. Still, Elvis was embarrassed about the quality of the story and his appearance. He also did not appreciate the rushed filming schedule.
“Up until that time certain standards had been maintained, but it seems to me from Kissin’ Cousins on, we were always on a short schedule,...

You may be wondering what Taylor Swift said out loud when Travis Kelce sang his now-catch phrase at Patrick Mahomes‘ charity event this past weekend.
If you don’t remember, after the Kansas City Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl, Travis took the microphone and sang a verse of “Viva Las Vegas” while his girlfriend Taylor stood in the crowd. Well, at the charity gala, Travis sang the exact same line again, with Taylor watching on as well.
Lip reader Jackie Gonzalez found a clip and analyzed what Taylor said when he sang this line again.

According to Jackie, Taylor turned her head to the person sitting next to her and allegedly said, “That again. I can’t do it” in a joking manner.

“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind.I started errantly watching live streams at work not long after the Sphere first blinked its enormous electric eye in September 2023. This was a vestige of a pandemic-era habit, lockdown having been a good time to virtually peer into places one could never go. Jellyfish floating in seemingly limitless blue suspension at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, some rural trail in South Dakota, the top of the Eiffel Tower. You could drop in to any of these streams and feel, reassuringly, that nothing consequential was happening. After spending some time letting these feeds unspool in the background, one begins to wonder who set these cameras up; who maintains the connection, checks on the equipment, wipes dirt off the lens; who decided this or that perspective was the best, the most representative,...

Elvis Presley was one of the biggest musicians and actors in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Known as the King of Rock and Roll, the musician was known for his often imitated style and s*xually provocative songs that were revolutionary at the time. He was one of the biggest pop-cultural phenomena in Hollywood and is revered even today. He was portrayed by Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi in two different films in the last two years.
Though he is rumored to have multiple affairs, Presley only married once in his life. The star musician met Priscilla Presley when he was stationed in West Germany during his military service. Presley has been known to have many courtships even after his marriage. His bodyguard during his tours mentioned that he preferred the women he dated not to have one specific quality that would turn him off.

Elvis Presley‘s “Suspicious Minds” is the best song ever written about the concept of suspicion. It wasn’t the first time the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll tackled the subject. Elvis recorded a song that later became a hit by an artist whose singing voice was extremely similar to his own. The song in question was allegedly crafted by one of The Beatles’ producers.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Suspicion’ is ‘Suspicious Minds’ on its head
Covers were a huge part of the “All Shook Up” singer‘s catalog from the very beginning. His debut album is nothing but covers! In the Summer of 2022, Baz Luhrmann's ‘Elvis‘ premiered in theatres across the country. The biopic, starring Austin Butler as the title figure, reminded past generations of the famed singer and taught younger generations of the Elvis hysteria that took over the world before they were even born. Not only did these younger generations learn of the Elvis Presley legacy, but they also reignited a love for this icon. TikToks of teens visiting Graceland with remixes of “Viva Las Vegas” and “Suspicious Minds” swept the For You Page.
Later that year, writer and director, Sofia Coppola, revealed on her Instagram page that she would soon begin production on ‘Priscilla’. Elvis Presley‘s “She’s Not You” was written by three of the best songwriters of the early 1960s. It’s no surprise that artists decided to take inspiration from one of the greatest country songs ever. Considering the pedigree of “She’s Not You,” the song itself is pretty disappointing.
Elvis Presley’s ‘She’s Not You’ was inspired by ‘I Really Don’t Want to Know’
Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were the songwriting duo behind Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” one of the most popular songs ever written. They also teamed up for several Elvis songs, including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Bossa Nova Baby,” and “She’s Not You.”
During a 2006 interview with Elvis Information Network, Leiber revealed what he thought of Elvis’ “She’s Not You.”
“Elvis did a really good job on it,” he opined. “He never did a bad job on any song.

Elvis Presley‘s “Bossa Nova Baby” is one of his more well-remembered 1960s hits, but was the end of Elvis’ peak era. A somewhat similar Frank Sinatra song blew it out of the water. One of the writers of “Bossa Nova Baby” wasn’t a huge Elvis fan at first.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ started a bad 5 year stretch for Elvis
Elvis produced more hits than nearly every other artist who ever lived. However, his career hit a big slump that lasted five-and-a-half years. According to The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits, “Bossa Nova Baby” reached the top 10 near the end of 1963. Between then and 1969, Elvis didn’t have a single top 10 hit, with the exception of a cover of Darrell Glenn’s “Crying in the Chapel.”
That was a dark period for Elvis. While he produced some classics during that time period, such as “Viva Las Vegas” and “How Great Thou Art,...

Bob Dylan wrote a whole essay about the lyrics of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Suede Shoes.” He said that there is a threat of violence in the track’s lyrics. Interestingly, Johnny Cash said he helped inspire the song.
Bob Dylan loves Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Suede Shoes’
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song, the “Lay Lady Lay” singer Dylan wrote essays about several songs he loved. The songs included Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas,” Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally,” The Eagles’ “Witchy Woman,” and “Blue Suede Shoes.” It’s not surprising that Dylan gravitates toward classic rock!
Dylan had plenty to say about the meaning of “Blue Suede Shoes.” “Your shoes are your pride and joy, sacred and dear, your reason for living, and anyone who scrapes or bruises them is putting himself into jeopardy, accidentally or out of ignorance it doesn’t matter,” he wrote. “It...

There are lots of great classic rock songs out there, but most of them don’t inspire lengthy reviews from the one and only Bob Dylan. Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” inspired some great poetry from Dylan. Shockingly, the song itself wasn’t that popular. That might be because it came out during a dark time in Elvis’ career.
Bob Dylan wrote Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ is about ‘the devil’s bones’
For his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song, Dylan wrote an essay about “Viva Las Vegas.” It started out beautifully, which is to be expected. After all, the “Lay Lady Lay” singer won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
“The song of the gambler, the sportsman — luck of the draw — short odds, long odds, a flip of the coin, raffles, lottos and the devil’s bones,” he said. “The roulette wheel, pinball machine, the switched-on city,...

Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” was one one of several songs by the same musical genius that the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll recorded. Bob Dylan had a lot to say about the songwriter in question in his most recent book. Dylan said the songwriter left the world of professional gambling after two of his fellow musicians gave him a wake-up call.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ was written by an artist who grew sick of songwriting
“Viva Las Vegas” was co-written by Mort Shuman and Doc Pomus. Pomus was known for writing Elvis’ “Kiss Me Quick,” “Little Sister,” “Surrender,” “Suspicion,” “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame,” and “She’s Not You.” Dylan dedicated his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song to Pomus.
In the book, the “Lay Lady Lay” singer compared the hustle of the entertainment industry to the world of faith healers. “Doc Pomus, though also wheelchair-bound,...

Taylor Swift celebrated Travis Kelce’s Super Bowl win with several long embraces on the field at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night.
Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night to win Super Bowl Lviii in Las Vegas.
During the presentation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, Swift was seen standing next to Kelce’s mom, Donna, as he spoke with CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz.
She was seen smiling and clapping as the Chiefs’ tight end first busted into a few lines of Elvis Presley’s song “Viva Las Vegas” before then leading the crowd in the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right.”
After that rousing speech, Swift greeted Kelce with a long hug and several kisses on the field, as she did two weeks ago when the Chiefs won the AFC Championship Game.

Frank Sinatra went through phases like he went through wives. The legendary crooner and movie star could exhibit impeccable taste for what people wanted to see and hear, and then, in a few year's time, completely lose his grasp of the zeitgeist.
Sinatra was threatening to enter one of his down periods in the mid-1960s. The popular music scene was in the throes of Beatlemania, while moviegoers were tiring of the Rat Pack's antics. Who wanted to see Sinatra and the gang saunter their way through Western and gangster pastiches like "4 for Texas" and "Robin and the 7 Hoods" when they could watch Elvis Presley set the screen ablaze with Ann-Margret in "Viva Las Vegas"?
To be fair, Sinatra was still Sinatra, but after giving one of his finest performances in John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate," he started playing it way too safe. Bud Yorkin and...

Elvis Presley had many leading ladies in his film career and he reportedly had an affair with nearly all of them. Elvis often had girlfriends or a wife as he shot movies. This did little to hinder him from pursuing his co-stars, though. His final onscreen love interest had no interest in his advances, though.
Elvis reportedly slept with all but 1 of his leading ladies
In 1969, Elvis starred in his final film, Change of Habit. His co-star was Mary Tyler Moore, who quickly became aware that Elvis had a crush on her.
“[Elvis] confessed right from the start that he’d had a crush on me since The Dick Van Dyke Show,” Moore wrote, per Express.
Nothing ever happened between them, though. Moore said she was the only one of Elvis’ leading ladies who didn’t have an affair with him.
“I was his last leading lady,” she told Ability Magazine.

Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” is one of the most infectious rock songs of the 1960s. According to Bob Dylan, it’s also an advertisement. Dylan had a lot to say about the co-writer of the song. “Viva Las Vegas” went on to have a significant impact on the titular city.
Bob Dylan wrote that Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ is a ‘bright and breezy love song’
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Music, Dylan had plenty of positive things to say about “Viva Las Vegas.” “‘Viva Las Vegas’ is also a commercial,” he opined. Notably, “Viva Las Vegas” was co-written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, the same duo behind other Elvis hits such as “Surrender,” “Little Sister,” and “(Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame.”
“Of course, when Elvis first recorded this Doc Pomus–Mort Shuman composition in 1963 and released it in 1964, he didn’t know that five years later,...

Bob Dylan once wrote an essay about Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas.” He saw it as a song about faith — albeit faith in something that isn’t traditionally considered religious. Dylan also had a bit to say about the faith that Elvis’ manager had in the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer. Fascinatingly, “Viva Las Vegas” wasn’t much of a hit.
Bob Dylan said Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ is about a modern Garden of Eden
In his 2022 book The Philosophy of Modern Song, Dylan analyzed “Viva Las Vegas” in depth. “This is a song about faith,” he wrote. “The kind of faith where you step under a shower spigot in the middle of a desert and fully believe water will come out.

On August 16, 1977, the world lost iconic performer Elvis Presley, who died at the young age of 42. Presley excelled in many media, from music to television to films and the concert stage, and he became a beloved cultural king worldwide. In music, he was nicknamed the “King of Rock and Roll,” but that genre was not his sole claim to musical significance. Presley performed and was influenced by a number of genres, including country, rockabilly, pop, blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues. In his career, Presley won three Grammy Awards (all for gospel music and none for rock) plus received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1971.
Although he got his start performing rockabilly, the Tupelo-born, Memphis-raised Presley gradually expanded his sphere of influence to include film, television and the concert stage. His appearances on television in the 1950s, in particular on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” caused a storm of controversy about...

Sometimes, the reputations of certain movies have been built up so much over the decades that, to an extent, newcomers can't help but come away disappointed when they finally experience it for the very first time. Others, however, live up to every inch of their status as bona fide classics. It's safe to say that "Close Encounters of a Third Kind," director Steven Spielberg's first film about extraterrestrial visitors, belongs firmly in the latter category. Although multiple generations of movie lovers only encountered the 1977 film through their parents, film school courses, or entirely on their own, various re-releases over the years and constant praise from both filmmakers and critics alike have kept "Close Encounters" exactly where it deserves to be -- at the forefront of the conversation about the greatest and most influential movies of all time.

Elvis Presley and Meghan Trainor have more in common than meets the eye. Trainor revealed her second major label album was inspired by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and one of his contemporaries. She also wants her music to resonate with people in a very specific way.

Title was Trainor’s first studio album on a major label. It included her breakthrough hit, “All About That Bass,” as well as other memorable singles such as “Lips Are Movin’,” “Dear Future Husband,” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.” She followed that up with the album Thank You. If anyone is good at spotting hidden meanings in movies, it’s Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino wrote a book of film criticism in which he said one of Elvis Presley’s movies had a rich subtext. The film was helmed by one of the most consequential action movie directors of all time.
Quentin Tarantino felt 1 Elvis Presley movie is similar its director’s struggles in Hollywood
In his 2022 book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino talked about the work of film director Don Siegel of Dirty Harry fame. “But the rogue law enforcement officer, at odds with their superiors, who operates independently to get their man and enforce their own self-determined version of justice, is practically the quintessential Siegel protagonist,” he wrote. “Even his criminals go rogue.

In 1977, Priscilla Presley came face to face with Ann-Margret Olsson at Elvis Presley’s funeral. Olsson had long been a problem in Elvis and Priscilla’s relationship. Newspapers had reported on their affair, causing Priscilla to scream about how much she hated the other woman. At the funeral, though, they were able to find common ground. Priscilla shared why she felt a genuine connection with Olsson.

Just like in George A. Romero's 1978 original, the bulk of Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" takes place in a shopping mall. In both films, a group of still-living people take refuge while scads of the undead shamble up against the walls outside. The commentary, of course, is that even after zombification, people still want to worship at consumerism's most powerful megachurch: the modern mall. All their memories and humanity have been erased by zombie-ism, but shopping remains one of their basest instincts. It's hardly a nuanced or complex theme, but it does make both films slightly more interesting.
Snyder's film is more energetic and playful than Romero's, an odd thing to say, given how turgid, humorless, and self-important the bulk of Snyder's films tend to be. One might credit the film's levity to the notoriously jocular screenwriter James Gunn, the director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies.

Sometimes, the best classic rock covers are the most unexpected ones. Dead Kennedys covered Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” and that changed their live shows forever. No matter how learned they are, film critics can be oh, so wrong. Elvis Presley‘s Viva Las Vegas inspired a review in The New York Times that was critical of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s early work. The New York Times also ignored one of Elvis’ best songs in the review.
The New York Times said Elvis Presley’s singing improved in ‘Viva Las Vegas’
In a 1964 article, The New York Times gave a mixed appraisal of Viva Las Vegas. “Coming on a balmy day, with no pretensions of art, Viva Las Vegas, the new Elvia Presley vehicle, is about as pleasant and unimportant as a banana split,” the article said. “And as fetching to look at, it might be added.
“By now, after some rocky beginnings, the Presley movie formula has leveled off to a series of musical romps that are extremely easy to take,” the article continued.

The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.

Even before Priscilla and Elvis Presley were married, she questioned his loyalty to her. Every time he left to film a movie, she felt both jealous and concerned. Though Elvis insisted he wasn’t having flings with his co-stars, she consistently saw evidence to the contrary. When she questioned him about this, his reaction was a cruel method of keeping her quiet.

Elvis Presley‘s “Bossa Nova Baby” was originally by a group that performed one of the most famous tunes of the 1950s. A songwriter explained how the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll rescued the song from obscurity. Despite the song’s eventual success, it wasn’t able to stop a record label from going under.

Zz Top covered Elvis Presley‘s “Viva Las Vegas” in the 1990s. One of the versions was a much bigger hit than the other. Despite this, the less popular version of the song might have had a greater impact on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s image.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ and Zz Top’s cover both appeared on hit albums
Elvis introduced “Viva Las Vegas” to the world in his musical film of the same name. The track was designed to promote the film, but, more than anything, it promotes the idea of Las Vegas. It captures the vivacious and eclectic spirit of the city more than any other song. Despite that, it wasn’t huge upon its release in 1964.
Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas” became a modest hit. It reached No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying on the chart for a total of seven weeks. The...

The Beatles‘ A Hard Day’s Night came out the same year as an iconic Elvis Presley movie. Elvis’ vehicle was the bigger hit. Subsequently, Paul McCartney revealed what he thought about A Hard Day’s Night.
The Beatles’ ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ didn’t end Elvis Presley’s time in the limelight
The 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night has a lot to offer: decent comedy, interesting locations, and some of the best pop songs ever written. Elvis’ Viva Las Vegas has a lot of the same things. Apparently, the latter connected more with audiences at the time.
The 2019 book The Mighty Elvis: A Graphic Biography reports Viva Las Vegas outranked A Hard Day’s Night at the box office. The usual narrative surrounding Elvis’ career is that it went downhill once The Beatles broke through in the United States. Viva Las Vegas proves he was still relevant after the Fab Four made...
