Marisol and Antonio along with the American Robert Conrad shine , being professionally directed by a good Hollywood director , George Sherman .
ma-cortes22 February 2018
Antonio , the known internationally dancer is preparing a big performance for television along with an American star named Bob (Robert Conrad) . Here Marisol is a splendid singer and dancer who lives at a boarding house along with his father (Fernando Rey) , a lot of ex circus artists (Fernando Sancho, Francisco Camoiras , Guillermo Marin..) and a chimpanzee called Miguel that is often doing antics and frolics , similar to famous Cheeta . But the popular dancer Antonio is missing a good female dancer . One day , near a billboard Antonio sees a girl dancing (Marisol) while walking the streets , but when he is going to talk to her she escapes . She lost one of her shoes , and this will be the only clue Antonio and Bob Conrad will have to find her .

Likeable and charming musical comedy with ex-child prodigy Marisol as the new Cinderella who runs away and lost her shoe , being the only hint to find her by Antonio and Robert Conrad , she is accompanied by a great plethora of secondaries . Of course , Marisol steals the show as the marvelous singer and dancer teen girl . Here stands out two great artists : Antonio and Marisol . Both of them perform impressive and overwhelming dancing that turn out to be the highlights of the movie . Marisol is well supported by a fine support cast , full of familiar faces as Fernando Rey , Antonio Casal , Guillermo Marín , Emiliano Redondo , Francisco Camoiras , Fernando Sancho , Carlos Casaravilla , Jesús Guzmán , Manuel Tejada , Valentin Tornos , among others . It contains a luminous and glimmer cinematography by Antonio L. Ballesteros .Musical score by Augusto Alguero responds appropriately to the ambient , originating a careful atmosphere .

The filmmaker George Sherman as well as the famous producer Goyanes succeed in this picture , obtaining a great achievement , managing perfectly to the performers and taking advantage of them , giving the best of their acting . It's worthwhile mingle of music , spectacular choreography , comedy , sentimentalism and good feeling . Here Marisol gives a sympathetic acting as a fabulous singer/dancer who cares his father/Fernando Rey and a motley group of circus artists . . Can be said that she is perfectly adequate to his measure .Marisol was an appealing Spanish actress and singer . Spanish film studios were looking for a new child star to follow the steps of Pablito Calvo, and make popular and populist folkloric movies and they found Marisol . She was discovered by her future producer Manuel J. Goyanes in an exhibition of the "Coros y Danzas de Málaga" in TVE in 1959 . Her debut in cinema was in 1960 and she complemented her activity in cinema with records , recitals and TV-shows . ¨Búsqueme Esa Chica¨ produced by Manuel J Goyanes , in fact , she was introduced to the movie business and discovered by this powerful producer in ¨Un Rayo De Luz¨ (1960) by Luis Lucia , who directed her in this first feature , where earned his famous name . He was widely known in Spain when she became a widely successful child star , following ¨Ha LLegado Un Angel¨, ¨Tombola¨, ¨Marisol Rumbo a Rio¨ which were big box-office hits in Spain during Franco's dictatorship , and she became Spain's most famous girl actress , outstanding his highly expressive face and eyes , charming eyes and innocent , angelical face . She was a milestone in Spanish "child prodigies" under Franco along with Joselito , Pili and Mili , Ana Belén and especially Pablito Calvo . And the producers trying to keep them as little kids for as long as possible . Due to false advertising by the studios that made their movies, and which wanted to make them appear younger than they really were , an obsession that haunted them through the whole of their careers . After the national and international hits as ¨La Nueva Cenicienta¨ , ¨La Historia De Bienvenido¨ and ¨Cabriola¨, and following other successful films as ¨4 Bodas Marisol¨, ¨Carola De Dia , Carola De Noche¨ . In her films she often sings Flamenco Cante , Saetas , Soleadas and other Folkloric songs . After several movies and records , and already a big star as a singer and an actress in Europe, the next move was trying to triumph in America, there she also played , sang and danced to grant local box-office . His success even reached around the world . However, life was not too glamorous for Marisol, as she was treated almost as a sideshow act by his managers , not allowing him to become an ordinary teenager . She was forced to keep his childlike image up to the seventies ; however , thanks to Juán Antonio Bardém changed his acting style , playing thrillers as ¨La Corrupción de Chris Miller¨ and ¨Poder Del Deseo¨ , and subsequently directed by prestigious filmmakers as Carlos Saura in ¨Carmen¨ , ¨Bodas de Sangre¨ and Mario Camus¨ in ¨Dias Del Pasado¨. Her last movies were the notorious TV series ¨Proceso a Mariana Pineda¨ and ¨Caso Cerrado¨ and she was not successful anymore . Marisol married two times , to Carlos Goyanes and Antonio Gades . Fidel Castro was the best man at her wedding to Antonio Gades . She has three daughters from her marriage to Antonio Gades , on of them the known actress Maria Esteve . Disappearing from public life in 1985, when she was still high in her career, she left everything , returned to her homeland, Malaga, and has lived as a housewife since then for her own choice . Has received many invitations to return, but has declined all of them, even simple interviews on TV. Retired In Malaga from acting at early age to become a discreet person and was then discovered much later that she had become a housewife and is now a social and humanitarian activist.

The motion picture "La nueva Cenicienta" translated to "The New Cinderella" in English was well directed by George Sherman in enjoyable style , though has some flaws . Sherman made reliable low-budget fare for Columbia between 1945-48, then moved on to do the same at Universal for another eight years , where he directed this ¨Tomahawk¨ . Sherman specialized almost exclusively in "B" westerns there , including the "Three Musketeers" series, which featured a young John Wayne. George directed lots of Westerns as ¨The Last of the Fast Guns¨ , ¨The Lone Hand¨, ¨Santa Fe stampede¨ , ¨Red skin¨ , ¨Chief Crazy Horse¨ ¨Calamity Jane¨, ¨Relentless¨ , ¨Comanche Territory¨ , ¨Dawn at Socorro¨, ¨Border River¨ , ¨war arrow¨, and many others . He also made occasional forays into action and horror themes, often achieving a sense of style over substance . The only "A"-grade films to his credit were two westerns starring John Wayne: ¨Comancheros¨ (1961) (as producer) and ¨The big Jack¨ (1971) . His last films were realized in Spain as "Find That Girl" , ¨The new Cinderella¨ and ¨Joaquin Murrieta¨. Rating : 6.5/10 . Worthwhile seeing for appropriate scenarios and breathtaking choreographies along with the wonderful dances between Antonio and Marisol . Well worth watching

Terrible accent

Warning: Spoilers
Great singing and dancing area feature of this film, as you would expect from Marisol, perhaps in her prime. And this is a nice film to watch if you are a Marisol (Pepa Flores) fan, and understand the Spanish culture of the period when her films were made. Every year a new Marisol film would show to Mothers what they wanted their daughters to be like, to young girls how they wanted to be, and to young boys that girls might not be too bad if they were all like Marisol.

The scene in which Robert Conrad and Marisol sing the song "Me Conformo" that was released as a record, is charming because it shows the couple being chaperoned and the couple not daring to hold hands, which though coy by modern standards was the way things were in Spain at the time. The chaperone then discreetly leaves them so that they can sing to each other in the street at night. But I wonder if it is also possible that the chaperone does not want to hear Conrad sing another song in Spanish with an undisguised American accent? His boyish good looks at the time make him an attractive love interest to Marisol but it is difficult to understand how Conrad convinced anyone in the production team that he could really speak Spanish or persuaded them that he should be allowed to try. And for me this spoils an otherwise enjoyable film.

The main plot of the story, where the Producer wants to find the girl who loses her shoe in the street, is confusing because we understand the dance that she performs is an imaginary daydream after she sees a bill board of the Dancer Antonio and therefore it is not clear what it is the Director is supposed to have seen that makes him want to find her.

But as a modern take on Cinderella, don't let these details spoil it for you; the scenes shared with the chimpanzee are amusing, and her friends, (actors that fans of Marisol films will recognizse instantly) who want to get on TV are endearing enough to make us frustrated and sorry when they decide to ignore the instructions and not turn up at the studio until the program is finished and thereby miss their opportunity.

But it all turns out fine in the end. Of course, for Marisol it always will.

Robert Conrad sings!
bijou-213 July 2003
Classic actor Fernando Rey, Flamenco dancer Antonio (no, not Gades), a chimp, a juggler, and a spanish crooning Robert Conrad (!!) can't stop this being a Marisol vehicle. As usual, she steals every scene she is in even when playing against the chimpanzee who does house chores. The subplot about a lost slipper and Marisol's efforts to get her house mates onto a TV variety show result in a ballet sequence at the end that is for fans only. Both Conrad and Marisol look fantastic in this film.
