In an interview Seijun answered the question of the uniqueness of this film in relation to other B/Program pictures he made in the time: "The studio wanted to make a skin flick, that's all. We couldn't make a real porno back then, though."
Has a similar plot as the film The Beguiled (1971), which was based on the 1966 novel by Thomas Cullinan and remade in 2017. In both films, a group of women, after banding together in a struggle to survive the ravages of war, have their tenuous co-existence threatened by the arrival of a man, an ex-soldier, who fascinates and frightens them to varying degrees. He grows particularly close to one of the women, with whom he makes plans to escape, and both films end with the two pairs of lovers suffering the same fate.
This film is part of the Criterion Collection, spine #298.
