Dhana is set up by the Communists, who have placed hand grenades in a hollowed-out durian fruit. They then place the durian in her bicycle basket and wait for her to pass through a police road inspection. Once cut, durians emit a very foul odor similar to the smell of feces. It is very unlikely Dhana would not have noticed this.
At 1.46 Candace shoots Ng. Barely 20 seconds later insurgent troops calmly march past. They would have certainly heard the shot and would have been searching for their leader.
