Roger Vadim's 1968 sci-fi freak-out "Barbarella" is one of the zestiest, sexist, strangest, and most amusing pictures the genre has to offer. Set in the 41st century, "Barbarella" follows the merry caprices of the title heroine (Jane Fonda), a freelance adventurer of the cosmos. Barbarella, frequently undressed, is assigned by the President of Earth (Claude Dauphin) to track down a mysterious, missing scientist named Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shea) who has invented an all-powerful weapon called the positronic ray.
During her quest, Barbarella is attacked by killer dolls, befriends a blind angel (John Philip Law), is forced into a deadly orgasm machine (although she can outlast its mechanical manipulations), and faces off against the Black Queen, the tyrant ruler of Sogo.
The film was based on the erotic comics by Jean-Claude Forest, and possesses all the same sexual energy as the aggressively naughty original, even if it's not quite as sexually explicit.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. Jane Fonda once thought her life was on the line during a harmful period at the beginning of her career.
When the actress was in her twenties, she began to suffer from an eating disorder.
“I led a secret life. I was very, very unhappy. I assumed I wouldn’t live past 30,” Fonda said during her interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast on Wednesday. In true Fonda fashion, the Hollywood icon joked that she doesn’t “understand” how she’s now in her eighties.
The “Grace and Frankie” star then explained that her “secret life” consisted of basically being a home body- she had a nonexistent dating life and never went out, which made her “unhappy.”

Sarah Palin's taking some style tips from her daughter Bristol Palin! The politician attended "Saturday Night Live's" 40th Anniversary Celebration at Rockefeller Plaza on Sunday in New York City. Palin looked youthful as she walked the red carpet in a beaded white shift dress, which had open cutouts in the sleeves. The 51-year-old finished her look with tousled waves, chunky black bracelets and leather peep-toe booties. But, we've definitely seen this dress before ... on Sarah's own daughter! Bristol was spotted wearing the same flirty frock in 2011 while attending the MSNBC's Correspondents After-Party in Washington, DC. The brunette beauty styled her long locks in big curls and finished her look with taupe suede wedges. While Palin and her 24-year-old daughter might be the same size, the Governor of Alaska should have left this dress in Bristol's closet. The beaded ensemble doesn't exactly look age appropriate for Palin -- we'd...

Sydney-born Australian actor Rod Taylor, best known as the star of George Pal's original film adaptation of "The Time Machine" and Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," died Wednesday of a heart attack in Los Angeles. He was 84.
Taylor made his feature debut in 'Time,' the 1960 screen version of H.G. Wells' classic. He followed that up voicing the lead dog in Disney's "101 Dalmatians" and delivered a strong performance in "The Birds".
Yet his career never really soared as high after those early successes, even though he kept working in various films such as "Sunday in New York ," "36 Hours," "Young Cassidy," "The Liquidator," "The Glass Bottom Boat," "Hotel," "Dark of the Sun," "Nobody Runs Forever," "Darker Than Amber," "The Train Robbers," "Bearcats!," "The Oregon Trail," "Masquerade," "Outlaws," "Falcon Crest," and "Welcome to Woop Woop".
His last role was that of Winston Churchill in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds".

Taylor in the 1960 screen version of The Time Machine.
By Lee Pfeiffer
If the year 2014 proved to be an exceptionally cruel one in terms of the number of legendary celebrities who passed away, the new year is off to an equally depressing start with the news that Rod Taylor has passed away at age 84. Taylor, who was two days away from his 85th birthday, died suddenly from a heart attack following a dinner party at his home. He was surrounded by friends and family when the end came. Taylor was a solid leading man who came to prominence in the late 1950s. Although Australian by birth, the ruggedly handsome Taylor could effectively play Brits, Irishmen and Americans with convincing ease. He first gained attention with supporting roles in high profile, big Hollywood studio productions in the late 1950s such as "Raintree County" and "Separate Tables". His breakthrough role came in...

Geoffrey Holder, the only theater man who at 6 feet, 6 inches could look Tommy Tune right in the eye and say “Abosolutely maaaaah-velous,” died Sunday in New York City. He was 84. Charles M. Mirotznik, a spokesman for the family, told the New York Times the cause was complications of pneumonia.
As well known for the honey-smooth bass-baritone that resonated through countless voice-overs as for the white linen suit and Panama hat that set off his gleaming Caribbean features — saucer eyes, broad-as-the-George-Washington-Bridge smile and shaved head — Holder became an advertising icon in the 1970s and ’80s as the pitchman for 7Up, declaring it “the Un-Cola — you know, Sev’mup – wet, wild, all that…” :

Note: Geoffrey Holder, noted dancer, choreographer, actor, composer, designer and painter, died on Sunday in New York. In recognition of his life and work, here's a recent article on 'Carmen & Geoffrey,' the documentary exploring his relationship with wife Carmen De Lavallade, which is now available on Netflix and DVD. I’ve been missing out not knowing much about the work of these two tremendous artists, icons I shall say, of what we regard today as modern dance. Married since 1955 not long after they met after working together in Harold Arlen’s "House of Flowers," Geoffrey Holder and Carmen De Lavallade’s work and personal lives are documented in the...

Fashion industry insiders came in droves for Joan Rivers' memorial service on Sunday in New York City, including designers like Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, and of course her longtime friend of over thirty years, Dennis Basso. Joan was a known fan of Basso's luxurious designs and statement furs, and she would often sit front row at his New York Fashion Week runway shows to support her friend. And so it is fitting that Basso dedicated his spring 2015 collection to the legendary comic and Fashion Police host. Before his runway show at Lincoln Center Monday, Basso's voice came on the speaker asking the audience for a moment of silence in honor of Joan. The lights dimmed for a minute of reflection, and...

The memorial service held Sunday in New York City for the late Joan Rivers was everything the comedienne and television host would have wanted: a star-studded affair complete with celebrities galore, expletive-filled tributes, and yes, even paparazzi.
Rivers, who died on September 4 at age 81, had outlined detailed wishes for her funeral in her 2012 book "I Hate Everyone...Starting With Me."
"I want craft services, I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene!" she wrote. "I want it to be Hollywood all the way. I don't want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents."
While Streep wasn't present Sunday, plenty of other celebrities were, including Kathy Griffin, Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Sawyer, Rosie O'Donnell, Barbara Walters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Michael Kors, Bernadette Peters, Alan Cumming, and Donald Trump.
