The character Van Johnson plays is supposed to be in his mid-20s, but Johnson was 43 when the film appeared.
This movie was released in the UK under the title "Beyond this Place", the name of the best-selling novel by A.J. Cronin on which it was based. However, in America, it was feebly re-titled "Web Of Evidence" - surprisingly, as the book had also sold well in America, so much so that it had already been adapted under its proper title for American television. This was a prestige live drama presentation directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Farley Granger and Shelley Winters, and it was televised in America about eighteen months before this film was released.
This was the second feature film to be directed by the famous cameraman, Jack Cardiff. In his autobiography, Cardiff does not even refer to the film by name, but dismisses it and his earlier film, "Intent To Kill", as just B-features, implying he was dissatisfied with the results. The film is certainly not a B-movie, and must have been fairly expensive with two Hollywood names in the leading roles and a number of renowned character actors in support, but it may be that it was subjected to post-production interference and that a number of key scenes were cut without Cardiff's approval. Certainly, it is surprising that Emlyn Williams has so little screen-time, given his above-the-title billing.
