Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • 'Execution' and 'What's in the Box' are especially violent.
  • Many characters die throughout the series but the majority are not graphic. Violence is rarely ever the focal point of an episode.
  • There is violence (the degree is subjective). Very little blood, and what there is is in black & white.
  • Some domestic violence.
  • Gun violence is not uncommon, but never portrayed in a positive light. When it is featured, it plays a part of the plot.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Many episodes show Rod Serling, the host of the show, with a lit cigarette during the introduction and/or conclusion. Assorted other characters may smoke as well.
  • Probably at least half of the episodes show someone drinking an alcoholic drink. Some even show characters in a drunken state but these characters usually get a chance for redemption.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The atmosphere of the show is extremely eerie, enhanced by the music and lighting/cinematic techniques.
  • Several episodes are particularly creepy, including "The Masks" "Perchance to Dream" "Eye of the Beholder" and many more.
  • Some intense scenes occur in the episodes.
  • Has a mysterious and unnerving atmosphere, and may leave some people unsettled or disturbed. Designed to spook and confuse.
  • Every episode can be intense, and some can be scary.
  • Horror elements, such as aliens, monsters and gremlins, are featured occasionally.
  • A main theme of the series is making the ordinary into something strange and unfamiliar. This may leave viewers unsettled.
  • Character deaths are incredibly common, as is tremendous suspense.
  • Some episodes depict frighteningly sadistic characters (i.e. "Deathshead Revisited", "The Jeopardy Room").
  • Death often appears as a person, as does the Devil. While Death is usually benign, the Devil is deceitful, manipulative and, in one instance, visually terrifying.
  • Not all of the frightening moments on the show feature the supernatural. Some common elements disturbing to some are isolation, death, destruction, and revenge. (Revenge is never glorified.)
  • There are many creepy elements, and some episodes feature that sense of foreboding and dread.
