What the devil?

One of the Ealing comedies that doesn't get written about very often and not one of the best. However, it does offer an insight into the film industry's fear of television in the early 1950s, with some fairly barbed satire at the expense of the "box in the corner" and its uncritical audience. Th plot seems to be a hybrid of the stage play on which the film was based - television wreaks various degrees of havoc on three households - and a surreal narrative link showing that the Devil (aka Mr Lucifer) is behind television's growth. Apparently he likes to invent something new to make each generation miserable. Television in the 1950s and - if a sequel threatens - mobile phones for the 2000s. Incidental pleasures include an appallingly tatty Christmas pantomime, with desperate performers facing a meagre and hostile audience, and a square dance involving television dancers, friends and neighbours gathered round the television, and a bunch of street urchins and ragamuffins, some of whom look uncannily like Margaret O'Brien in the Halloween sequence of "Meet Me in St Louis". It also convincingly depicts the grime and dilapidation of post-war London, with characters forced to live in cramped basements and seedy bedsits.

Great acting, good premise, so-so plot

This anti-television vehicle commences its tirade most promisingly. The characters are introduced in capital style, while the proposition that TV is an instrument of the devil will fall on many a sympathetic clerical ear. Unfortunately, the producer has obviously blown most of his budget on the earlier scenes, and then spent his reserves on the concluding sequence in which a myriad number of workers in an enormous office are employed sending out lonely heart letters.

The rest of the action, alas, wallows in tedious additional dialogue and small-budget clichés which are now and again relieved by the welcome entrance of Stanley Holloway.

All the same, the film does present some worthwhile ideas. True, the conclusion seems like an arbitrary appendage to the main plot, but the real problem is that none of the three stories actually do justice to their fascinating characters.

All the players are excellent. Stanley Holloway, Joseph Tomelty and Peggy Cummins never deliver less than top-notch performances, but the real surprises are a charismatic Jack Watling and normally dull Gordon Jackson (of all people) doing full justice to a character role.

At times, Pelissier's direction seems admirably imaginative, especially in the panto sequences.

Fun look at television in its early days in Britain

When I read the description of "Meet Mr. Lucifer" on our onscreen TV listings guide I knew I wanted to watch it. I saw it on the Talking Pictures Channel, which was appropriate as the channel features British films and documentaries about life in Britain in the past decades. "Meet Mr. Lucifer" is a delightful satire on television in the days when the new medium was beginning to make an impact and helping to dwindle audiences for cinemas and variety theaters. I imagine the screenwriter and the producers enjoyed making barbs at their new rival including showing television as the actual work of the Devil, Lucifer's latest device to make people miserable. The film also explores how people are affected by new technology. One major character, Mr Pedelty, doesn't even own a radio. A spellbound drinker at the pub marvels that the miracle of television makes it possible for him to see a famous person live while his sister in Eastbourne can also see the famous person live at the same time, so surely he can see the spirits of his late father and other relatives, as they are also apparitions. American viewers may wonder why the satire doesn't include spoofs of the constant TV commercials that are sent up in movies of the 1950s such as The Seven Year Itch and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter. "Meet Mr Lucifer" was made before the advent of commercial television in the UK; ITV, the country's first commercial television provider, began in 1955. The film captures a period when the BBC had no rival stations and literally was the only show in town. The Lonely Hearts singer can only hint at a product that is paying her for her endorsement elsewhere, as the BBC prohibits advertising. The reactions of the characters to Mr Pedelty's set show how novel the programmes must have appeared, even genres that were long established on radio, such as horse racing, panel games, and variety musical programmes. Mr Pedelty replies "good night" to the news announcer as he bids the viewers good night, the young married woman from upstairs and her friends sit spellbound through a lecture about physics and gasp in wonder at the shots of hand drawn graphics, when a square dancing programme starts they stand up and begin to dance along, accompanied by children on the street who watch the screen through a window. One of the film's funniest and most touching sequences show a bachelor becoming so infatuated with the "lonely hearts" singer he hangs her portrait on his bedroom wall and at work, then when his enjoyment of the programme is interrupted by noises outside his room, seizes his landlady's offending vacuum cleaner, his neighbour's hammer, and part of the motor of a motorcycle revving in the street outside. The shots of the huge offices full of clerks typing and sending seemingly personal responses from the singer to fans of the show are a nice look at how TV was already hatching schemes to increase ratings. I also smiled when the young husband objected at the idea of having the TV in the bedroom- there were already quips back then that having a set in the bedroom wasn't good for a marriage. I agree with the reviewer who said the film needed to have more scenes with Stanley Holloway. It would have benefited from showing a larger range of characters than the residents of a single London house, and would have been much sharper if its satire was more stinging. The man running the show was Lucifer, after all. Overall it's a gentle satire of the days when people were amazed at pictures in their living room and the new medium was beginning to take form.

A look at the 1950's when the first TV sets arrived.

Another in a long line of great black and white British films of the 1950's. When Mr Pedelty (Joseph Tomelty) leaves his firm, he is given a TV set as a retirement present. At first he enjoys all the attention from his neighbours,but soon the attraction wears off, and he sells it on to the young married couple (Jack Watling and Peggy Cummins) living in the flat above him. They soon encounter the same problems,and again the set is passed on to several different charatures all with the same results. A very enjoyable story with a strong cast including Kay Kendall, Barbara Murray, and as the pantomime devil Stanley Holloway.

Early T.V. Experience for most Brits.

This film resonated with me being born in 1946 whose family first had a Murphy t.v.set in 1954 with its single BBC channel.Previously, my father had to drive us to his sister's house she shared with my paternal grandmother whose family already had bought a TV in 1953 on which we all saw the Queen's coronation that year.In the early part of 1954 we too had a roomful of neighbours & friends who did not possess a t.v. but who wished to view the novelty of watching t.v.

London Live t.v. channel in the London area where I live are currently transmitting a collection of Ealing films mainly from the 40s & 50s and although I watch new ones whenever possible, "Meet Mr. Lucifer" had passed me by previously.This film had a galaxy of well known film stars which you can glean from the full cast list on IMDb.com.My favourite was seeing the late Kay Kendall playing "Miss Lonely Hearts Club" although I suspect it was not her voice that was dubbed onto the soundtrack.Very enjoyable I rated it 7/10.

Good black and white film from 1953 when television came out i was aged three at the time all goes to show how we all love TV. Now it has become part of our life style interesting formula enjoyed watching the film.

Very good film from 1953 when I was three interesting premise i enjoyed the acting and also in black and white very atmospheric. Nice to see old films occasionally.

A morality tale about the scourge of television from an age when cinema felt under threat

Before going on stage, an actor playing Lucifer (Stanley Holloway) comes back to the theatre drunk after having a discussion in a pub about the scourge of television. After he knocks his head he is introduced to Lucifer himself (also played by Holloway) who shows him a story about a TV set and how it causes misery to its various owners.

An interesting minor Ealing comedy about the then very real threat of television on cinema, as cinema itself had done previously with the theatre. It's patchy, but also highly enjoyable. The film is peppered with well known names in this otherwise very topical film. Holloway of course appears in a couple of roles, but his voice as Lucifer was dubbed by Geoffrey Keen. Based off a play by Arnold Ridley, the future Private Godfrey in 'Dad's Army'.

The Devil's Goggle Box.

Meet Mr. Lucifer is directed by Anthony Pelissier and adapted to screenplay by Monja Danischewsky from Arnold Ridley's (later to play private Godfrey in the long running situation comedy) Dad's Army) play (Beggar My Neighbour). It stars Stanley Holloway, Peggy Cummins, Jack Watling, Barbara Murray, Joseph Tomelty, Humphrey Lestocq and Gordon Jackson. Music is by Eric Rogers and cinematography by Desmond Dickinson.

Out of Ealing Studios, Meet Mr. Lucifer is one of that great studio's lesser lights. Homing in on a sort of fear of the new home entertainment of the 50s, that of the TV set, plot features a television set that moves from owner to owner and causes nothing but trouble for said owners. This of course is the work of Old Nick himself, here essayed with a glint in his eye by Holloway. Sadly the attempts at satire miss the mark, leaving us with a somewhat uneven mix of comedy and seriousness. On the plus side it opens the eyes to the iffy quality on the TV in the early 50s, while there's a roll call of fine British actors in the supporting (cameo) slots.

Interestingly the Ealing hierarchy were very wary of the themes at the core of the picture, which explains why Pelissier was fetched in to direct. Knowing they themselves were uncommitted to the production goes some way to explaining the flat feel to it all. 5/10

Ealing Misfire

This film ,made in 1953,is largely forgotten.It is a misfiring satire.At the time this film was released TV was about to make a substantial impact on cinema audiences as a result of the Coronation.By 1960 cinema audiences had dropped by two thirds from their post war high and thousands of cinemas were closing.Also,just 3 years after this film was made Ealing studios themselves were closed and purchased by the BBC.Also those music halls that had managed to struggle on finally closed their doors in the late 50s.So i am afraid that Michael Balcon was just spitting in the wind by trying to tell people that television was a bad influence.The film is quite entertaining ,particularly Gordon Jackson playing very much against type.

The Devil's lantern?

Interesting curio from Ealing Studios. Based on a play by Arnold Ridley ( better known as 'Private Godfrey' from 'Dad's Army' ), 'Meet Mr.Lucifer' is a whimsical fantasy warning of the potential dangers of television. In 1953, few people in Britain had sets, but its popularity was on the rise, and film makers such as Michael Balcon were worried enough to make a movie of this kind. Stanley Holloway is 'Sam Hollingsworth', a drunken actor reduced to playing 'The Devil' in a tatty pantomime version of 'Robinson Crusoe', and even that is doing poor trade as audiences are staying at home and watching the goggle box.

After a few drinks during the interval, Sam goes back on stage, only to be knocked unconscious as he tries to use the trapdoor. He imagines he is in Hell itself, where the Devil - also played by Holloway - claims that the wheel and the telephone were both inventions of his to make everyone's lives miserable, and the television is his latest idea. But it is not doing the job quick enough, so Sam is recruited as Satan's helper.

We then follow the lives of a group of people as a television set changes their lives for the worse. First up is 'Mr.Pedelty' ( Joseph Tomelty ) who gets a set as a retirement gift. He becomes obsessed by the thing, watching anything and everything. When there is a dancing programme on, he invites people in off the street and gives them free drinks ( all obtained on credit from his local pub ). As the debts mount, he decides he has had enough and so bequeathes it to a young couple ( Jack Watling and Peggy Cummins ). He is studying to become a chemist, and her television viewing habits spoil his concentration. To save their relationship, they pass the set on to Hector McPhee ( Gordon Jackson ), who becomes infatuated by a beautiful singer ( Kay Kendall ) known only as 'The Lonely Hearts Girl'...

It is not the programmes that come under attack, but the medium itself. Its power as a force for good is barely mentioned, making this a bit one-sided. My biggest complaint is that there is too little of Stanley Holloway. The film is only really engaging when he is around. Also, the satire - if that's the right word - could have been stronger. I suppose television had not been around long enough for a major assault on the medium to be justifiable. Fun cameos from Ian Carmichael and Joan Sims, plus celebrities of the time such as Gilbert Harding and MacDonald Hobley. Eric Rogers - of 'Carry On' fame - did the music, and some of it was reused in 'Carry On Spying' ( 1964 ). Just before the end credits roll, the film takes a pot-shot at 3-D movies!

Out of the television set

It is easy to be view Ealing comedies as some kind of comedy gold if you just watch the best of their output.

However films like these give a more rounded view of Ealing Films a satirical misfire that misses its target by a mile.

Stanley Holloway plays a departed drunken actor who takes a knock and meets Lucifer (also Stanley Holloway) down below and he gets send back to earth to spread the marvels of the television set which in time only causes misery.

Television ownership took off with the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Rising television viewers also had an impact on cinema audiences and the theatre as well with variety taking a big hit.

We see old Mr Pedelty who is given a television set as a retirement present from his firm. He enjoys watching television and soon invites friends and neighbours round, throwing parties which soon gets out of hand and leaving him in debt for all the drinks and food he bought. Even the friendship he has made are shallow, people only wanted to know him because he had a TV set.

He sells the TV set it to a newly married couple, the Norton's in the upstairs flat and pretty soon they have the same problems especially as he needs to study for his pharmacy exams and gets no peace and quiet. As Lucifer remarks, that TV is 'so much more effective than the old fashioned lodger' in splitting up relationships.

Knowing the television set causes trouble he then gives it to his envious and petty former colleague, Hector at the pharmacy who becomes obsessed with the singer who performs a nightly show on television. The effect is to actually make him happier and better to go along with until her show gets cancelled.

The episodic film starts of wickedly enough but becomes mundane and tedious very quickly. After all it seems to be a film more afraid of new technology which was to become a rival. Ealing Films eventually sold its studio to the BBC.

Surprisingly good

Just seen it again after many years, and what now impresses me is a a surprisingly good and sharp script. The script's critique of the negative effects of TV addiction is excellent and prescient for its day, considering how early this film was made into the march of TV (1953) which would eventually supplant film as the medium for our diet of social media.

Incidentally, my parents had a set for the 1953 British Coronation, amongst the first in their neighbourhood and thus became that day a focal point for all those who did not yet have a TV.

The Miss Lonelyhearts segment would work today in the way it could manipulate all those Mr. Lonelyhearts out there. Kay Kendall was never so alluring.

Having said that, TV is today as important to me as it is to anyone else, at least where news and documentaries are concerned. There are, probably, some good effects in the ubiquity of TV, but I personally wonder what the final balance is. It is interesting that the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke observed how, along with Marshall Mcluhan, the Canadian media commentator, that TV has created a 'global village' and even the poorest of households will own a TV, even in the worst of slums or favelas, as they are known in South American. Indeed, I suspect that the social glue holding Latin American countries together are its soaps. That may hold good for the West, too.

But back to the film; the ensemble acting is excellent, with Stanley Holloway as its focal point, but, goodness me, how gorgeous a young Barbara Murray and Peggy Cummings are, how they brighten the dreariness and blight of a post-war Britain all too slowly recovering from its wounds.

Funny and charming

Just discovered this gem via Talking Pictures. A charming and very funny film. The story is a one off - the effect of the dreaded tv on the lives of those who become entranced with it. A host of wonderful actors popping up. A great script, witty and cogent. I wonder why this film is not better known. Great fun and a joy to watch.

Cannot Help Feeling That This film Was Designed To Encourage People To Stop Buying TV Sets And Come The Cinema Instead

My first impression of his film is that it was designed encourage those thinking about buying a television to reconsider such a purchase and come to the cinema instead.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, most young parents at the time hated the television. It was usually only the grandparents that found it to be a more valued form of entertainment.

Younger married couples with children generally could not afford to rent such an appliance. The cost of a television license in 1953 was £3 per year. The average wage was £200 per year after tax. The average mortgage was £48 per year - and the couple would have had to eat, clothe themselves and their children; and pay gas and electric bills as well.

Parents also thought it to have a detrimental influence on their children. For example: parents felt that their children were not doing their homework properly, not playing outside enough, and spending too much time watching television instead reading books and developing their knowledge of life itself, even though television was giving children an innovative insight into life - surreal as it was.

On the social side, in those day's parents liked to have visitors and liked to spend all night talking - I wish I could remember what they used to talk about. I think it was mostly about what they had read in the national and local newspapers.

Quite often my parents would turn the television off for no reason other than it seemed to be dominating and taking over the whole house.

One man's favourite television show would become another man's load of rubbish. Some members of the family would be enjoying a television programme, whilst other members of the family would find the whole show irritating.

Some people would sit watching the programme with their minds closed and their mouths open. Today that would be considered to be a good form of meditation and a way of relaxing the mind, after a very stressful day at work.

In Great Britain, at the time of this film's release, the only Television Broadcasting Service was the British Broadcasting Corporation - BBC for short. On most days, television was only broadcasted for 6 hours a day - from 5 o' clock in the afternoon till 11 o' clock in the evening, starting with Children's Hour. The rest of the evening was dominated with News, Documentaries and plays that children did not usually understand - or were not allowed to stay up and watch.

So, apart from the fact that in those days televisions were always breaking down, going fuzzy, and Dad having hang from the roof guttering, in order to position the aerial to the right advantage, it is very difficult to imagine what sort of disrupting influence that television had on our lives, as this film seems to suggest. My schoolteacher always used to say that the television has an "off" button and it usually worked.
