Daniel Gélin and Danièle Delorme were then husband and wife ,like in the movie,and they were among the best actors of the era. This is Gélin's only attempt as a director. The results are decent.
The screenplay was probably inspired by Guy de Maupassant's "Bel-Ami" :it tells the story of a go-getter,a journalist ,whose name ,"Commandeur" (sic) is revealing. The first picture shows an eager man,whose train is arriving in Paris and whose impatience and agitation show on his face .The depiction of the press is almost as harsh as in Mackendrick's "sweet smell of success" or Lang's "while the city sleeps" although there's nothing spectacular in "les Dents Longues" ,it's not a thriller or a film noir.
Anyway,the best scenes are to be found outside the (paper) office .The journalist's only child has meningitis. After a night during which they fight to save their boy,the man falls asleep. At dawn,a distraught wife walks across the room and simply says "Bruno is dead" .
