Molls On A Mission
bkoganbing30 June 2011
Hugs and Mugs finds Moe, Larry, and Shemp in the second hand furniture business and they happen to come into possession of a second hand couch where a stolen pearl necklace has been hidden. The owner failed to pay storage and the Three Stooges get the couch.

The molls of the crooks who stole the necklace go to claim the couch and find out who has the thing and then go to work on the Stooges.

What really sets this short apart from the ordinary run of Stooge comedy is the fact that the three women, Nannette Bordeaux, Christine McIntyre, Kathleen O'Malley are every bit as adept at slapstick mayhem as Moe, Larry, and Shemp are. Witness the scene with the clerk at the storage place as they get information from him. That's a small sampling of what they do to the boys.

Hugs And Mugs only proves these women would have been perfect screen wives for the Stooges.

wise dame

Fifi, Lily, and Ella are thieves who spent some time in jail. They had stored away a stolen pearl necklace but the storage was sold to pay back charges. The Stooges run a furniture shop and bought the necklace. The girls track them down and intend to charm the necklace out of the boys. Three thugs follow the trail to the shop.

Lily is one wise dame. I love her when she goes toe to toe with the boys. I love adding an additional element to stir the pot. It's fun. She makes this better than just your standard Stooges. Her scenes are the best of this short.

Not As Easy At It Looks
ccthemovieman-114 May 2010
Three female crooks, just "out of the clink," go to claim some stolen pearls they left at a storage bin but find out some other dopes from the Shangri-La Upholstering Co., have taken them.

The girls go over there hoping to put on the charm and steal back the pearl necklace.

They didn't realize, of course that the place is run by three imbeciles - The Stooges - so the charm part will be easy, but getting the pearls back?

Well, Shemp, Larry and Moe will always make this tough since they never know what they're into anyway but somehow always prevail in problem situations.

"We Make Everything from Beds to Bustles"

Warning: Spoilers
"Hugs and Mugs" is not the best Three Stooges short ever made. Yet, it's not a bad Stooge film either. In this one, Moe, Larry, & Shemp operate an upholstery shop, where three pretty female ex-jailbirds show up to pitch some woo while they frisk the boys for a very valuable string of pearls. (Don't read any further until after you have seen this short.)

Highlights: Before the girls arrive at the Stooges' shop, Moe, Larry, & Shemp engage in some brisk & funny slapstick with a needle and a drill. (Right after this, the violence between them becomes quite excessive and the humor is lost, thanks to director Jules White.) The French girl (Nanette Bordeaux) tickles Shemp, who winds up with a sofa spring on the back of his trousers (a la the Stooge films "Hoi Polloi" [1935], "An Ache in Every Stake" [1941], and "Have Rocket--Will Travel" [1959]). During the Stooges' fight with three mobsters inside a rag bin, Shemp sometimes irons the wrong crooks. And the garment-tearing contest between the Stooges and the head villainess (Christine McIntyre) becomes vicious!

Finally, a few more things to watch for in "Hugs and Mugs." As he does in various other Stooge shorts, Shemp does his famous fighter's dance and receives the first punch! One of the girls catches a piece of slapstick by getting whacked in the head with a filing cabinet drawer. And Emil Sitka, perhaps the most beloved character actor ever to appear with the Stooges, pops up at the opening of this short as a cranky old storage clerk.

Solid Stooges short film
Horst_In_Translation24 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Hugs and Mugs" is a 1950 short film from the Stooges and by that time, 65 years ago, Shemp had already replaced Curly. Apart from him, Larry and Moe are on board of course too. I enjoyed this short film that runs for 16 minutes like all the other Stooges short more than most of the rest, because it actually goes beyond Moe pointlessly bashing everybody else and shows us a nice little funny crime story with an ending that has a moral. This is also one of the short films where three girls are included, one per Stooge. Initially, they seem possibly like the antagonists, but in the end they make the right choice. 5 years after World War II, this is still a black-and-white film, even if some films, especially cartoons, already had color at this point. Two of the three girls were fairly prolific in Stooges works at this point, the third one is the only who is still alive today. Director Jules White also worked with the Stooges on many occasions. Same goes for writer Clyde Bruckman who worked with some of the silent film great in the decades before this. Experience pays off. Recommended.

Another excellent Three Stooges short!
Movie Nuttball14 October 2004
The Three Stooges has always been some of the many actors that I have loved. I love just about every one of the shorts that they have made. I love all six of the Stooges (Curly, Shemp, Moe, Larry, Joe, and Curly Joe)! All of the shorts are hilarious and also star many other great actors and actresses which a lot of them was in many of the shorts! In My opinion The Three Stooges is some of the greatest actors ever and is the all time funniest comedy team!

This is a very funny and arguably a classic Three Stooges short with Shemp! Appearing in this short are Christine McIntyre, Kathleen O'Malley, Nanette Bordeaux, Emil Sitka, Pat Moran, Wally Rose, and Joe Palma. McIntyre and Bordeaux are excellent in this on. I recommend this Three Stooges short!
