• The premiere of this film took place two days after Elizabeth Taylor's real-life marriage to "Nicky" Conrad Hilton Jr.. The publicity surrounding the event is credited with helping to make the film so successful.
  
  
• MGM gave Elizabeth Taylor a wedding gift of a one-off wedding dress designed by Edith Head (a move also designed to promote the film).
  
  
• Jack Benny badly wanted the lead role but was deemed unsuitable.
  
  

• In the film, one of the gifts Kay gets as a present is a Venus de Milo statue with a clock in the stomach, which Spencer Tracy refers to as a "stinker". This same gift makes its' way into the 1991 re-make among the presents, and is still not received well.
